Mike Mitchell fined for hit on Antonio Gates

AP

In Monday night’s game between the Steelers and Chargers, the officials didn’t only miss 18 seconds coming off the clock. The officials also missed Pittsburgh safety Mike Mitchell taking a shot at San Diego tight end Antonio Gates away from the play, as a Philip Rivers pass sailed toward another area of the field.

The league office didn’t miss it. Mitchell has been fined $8,681 for unnecessarily striking Gates.

The oddly-specific amount comes from negotiations between the NFL and NFL Players Association regarding the maximum amounts under the annual fine schedule.

The extra contact didn’t keep Gates from scoring a pair of touchdowns in his return from a four-game PED suspension.

  1. Roger Goodell’s NFL is horrible. The last 3 stories are all about fines for this and that. And if it’s not fines it’s suspensions. The season started with about 40 player suspended for all kind of crap. The only person who is happy about this is the kind of person who likes to try to control all the intangibles . And that’s just what Goodell is.

  2. yeah but you can climb and doofusly flail and claw at Big Ben’s knees and get nothing. Ignorant…

Filthy player who has sucked everywhere he has played. Fits nicely in the “burgh” since they promote this kind of garbage. Can’t wait for Arizona to bend them over on Sunday.

Facts that prove Pittsburg promotes this cesspool behavior you are obsessed with. It’s easy to slander but harder to prove what you are saying Skippy.

Quit blaming him for everything, it’s so tired and stupid at this point. Like Mitchell and Michael Bennett didn’t deserve fines, Bennett should be suspended. It’s the idiot players who get themselves in trouble.

  5. I’m sure that fine will pale in comparison to the fine he receives from his own team after giving up six TDs to Cardinals receivers on Sunday.

  6. I am so sick and tired about hearing about this type of stuff. Especailly when they are not thorough or even handed in their application of it. This type of stuff is like corporate doings and I have no idea why they make it public. It essentially is none of our business and all it does is ruin the rep of the league and make the people involved look bad. We dont need to know this stuff and it is none of our business. The league has powers that be for the players and for the officials and for the people running it. Do what you gotta do and keep it private and leave us out of it. Its none of our business anyway.

  7. On the play they are referring, he hit gates as the ball flew over his head. It was a standard ‘hit the receiver so they can’t make a play on the ball’ scenario.

I swear the league has a predetermined amount of cash they have allotted for their designated charities, which is 100% collected from any random defensive player. The NFL is a complete joke now. All offense & this is why. Defenses can’t play defense.

  8. Good job Roger !
Keep punishing people that arent playing by the rules .
You arent there to make the public happy .
You are the commisioner some people dont understand the word or the job from their couch .

  9. Roger Goodell’s NFL is horrible.

But not horrible enough for you to stop watching…and typing about it…

While I don’t disagree with the Mike Mitchell assessment, lets not pretend Arizona hasnt been built around Pittburghs scraps over the last few years. And yes you will win Sunday, but without Big Ben in the line up is it really that impressive? Mike Vick gets you riled up? If you say so, pal.
