Sheldon Richardson: If we execute, this is another win for us

Getty Images

Things had been pretty quiet on the Patriots-Jets front for the first few days of this week, but things picked up steam on Thursday.

The Patriots went full troll on their Twitter account Thursday by posting a picture of Mark Sanchez’s Buttfumble from the 2012 season, which someone in the organization must have realized wasn’t quite keeping with Bill Belichick’s preferred way to approach games because it was taken down a short time later.

Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson added some meat to the stew later on Thursday when asked if a win would validate the Jets’ rebuilding process.

“This is going to be another win for us. We’ll let you all write the columns about validating wins and stuff like that. This is going to be another win in the win column if we go out there and execute and do what we’re supposed to do,” Richardson said, via Kristian Dyer of Metro New York. “We’re going to be up in the division, that’s how we’re going to look at it.  We’re going to be the front-runners, that’s how we look at it.”

Anything that dances into the area of a guaranteed win draws a strong reaction and Richardson’s will likely do the same even if the context of “validating wins” makes the answer read a bit differently than it would if Richardson was simply saying the Jets are going to win.

At any rate, Richardson’s feeling that the Patriots’ offensive line injuries don’t shift the needle in the Jets’ direction because the Patriots “always find a way when they’re not stacked up well to find a way to win anyway” suggests that Richardson knows the Jets probably won’t win just by showing up for Sunday’s only matchup between teams with winning records.

  1. Guaranteeing a win in Gillette isn’t the smartest thing to do.It usually doesn’t turn out well.

  2. The Circus may have moved to Buffalo, but apparently some of the clowns remained in NY.

  3. To be fair he qualified it with the “if we……” statement. Not that Belichick will let that stop him from using it as bulletin board material.

All my fellow Pats fans acting like the Jets are just another tomato can better take a closer look. #1 scoring defense and #8 scoring offense. A far, far better coach than Rex ever was there as well. Plus Revis who has always given Tom more fits than any other corner who now knows quite a bit about the Pats offensive playbook after last year.

And yeah they’ve played some lousy opponents but so have the Pats. The Jets and the Donks are the two toughest teams the Pats will face all regular season. If they don’t go 16-0 it will be because one or both of those 2 teams pulls one out against us.

  4. Sounds like circular reasoning. ANY team that successfully “executes” its gameplan will win.

  5. Eh, good luck. Anything is possible and the Patriots are sure to lose at least one game this year. Trouble is, it’s not as easy as Mr. Richardson is making it appear.

  6. Explain to me again how the integrity of the game is not diminished by Sheldon being able to play and not being suspended?

Hello? Integrity of the game! fleeing from a cop with a loaded gun, drugs and a child in the car are not an ok thing to do for civilians.

Keep repeating integrity a whole bunch and some yahoo’s will start to agree with you

  7. If the jets put revis on gronk and take away their pick plays, then I agree with Sheldon they’ll win. Easier said then done, but the jets have a great defense that could do that

  8. Guaranteeing a win in Gillette isn’t the smartest thing to do.It usually doesn’t turn out well.

    —————————————

Yeah it only happened in the 2011 divisional game in the biggest choke of the year

  9. Another team running their mouth. Especially this guy. Pure scumbag. Built in excuse now.

Hey Sheldon, why did you lose, “didn’t execute”. Seems like a lot of teams”don’t execute” when they play us.

    #15yearsofexcellenceandcounting

  10. This defense has some real studs. Leonard Williams and Richardson are both good enough to be #1 overall picks. Williams will soon be the best defensive player in the NFL. Revis is Revis, and Calvin Pryor could end up being the best safety in the NFL. Lots of other good players too. The Jets bandwagon might start getting pretty full, so I’d advise jumping on quickly before all the seats are taken. This team is built for the long haul. I also think Bryce Petty will become a pretty decent QB in a couple years. I’m not even a Jets fan.

  11. This is a home game for the Pats. Serving warm Gatorade should pretty much guarantee a win.

(Just meant as humor. harrisonhits2 stated the situation very well in comment above).

  12. As a Jets fan, I am sick of this selfish, irresponsible loudmouth. Sign Wilkerson, trade Richardson. There’s no debating the issue. Talented, me-first player. He either does not have the awareness or simply does not have the awareness that his coach hates this kind of garbage. Sheldon, KINDLY SHUT UP.

  13. He’s right as Belichick answers the reporters when ask, why the Pats won or lost the game, he says “whoever makes the most plays and has fewer turnovers usually wins the games”. But not always, the Lions know what I’m talking about. The Jets spend the money and have a nasty good team. The Patriots are always good. What have you got? A great game. This is the way we should all want it. To be the best you’ve got to beat the best. Jets and Patriots top 7 in the NFL.

  14. Even Rex didn’t think this guy was worth poaching, and he picked up IK after he punched his own starting QB in the face. Think about that.

  15. “If the jets put revis on gronk and take away their pick plays, then I agree with Sheldon they’ll win. ”

Lolz Gronk would crush Revis. Revis will likely be on Edelman anyway.

And the whole pick play parrot thing is hilarious. If its an illegal pick the refs always call it. There are however numerous “rub” plays that are not illegal. You need to educate yourself because you clearly don’t understand the difference.

  16. Should be a good game – the Jets look good this year, match up (at least on paper) with NE and have a smart coach in Bowles.

Let’s see how the Jets D can hold up against one of the leagues better offenses.

Personally, I think NE scores about 35 points and wins in a rout, but we’ll see on Sunday.

  17. As a Patsfan I’ll agree with Richardson

They have the tools they need to beat the Patriots

Of course the Patriots have the tools they need to beat the Jets too

But NY has a good run game and NE has a mediocre run defense – and the key to the game for the Jets will be to keep the ball out of Brady’s hands, and they can match up Revis on Gronk somewhat effectively.

Edelman may be more tricky to cover. Obviously the Jets D is good – sure that’s part Revis but part of that is that they play smart football under Bowles that they never would under Rex Ryan.

It’s a good test for each team and the one that executes the best will win.

Uh you lost to the sorry Eagles. Keep dreaming Jets player.

They may have lost to the Eagles but the wins were against quality opponents like the Browns, Colts, Fins and Redskins. Juggernauts no doubt………

If the jets put revis on gronk
    ——–
Oh please, PLEASE think you only need 1 revis to take out a gronk, PLEASE!!!!

  20. Richardson chirping again…why not let your play speak for itself, instead of your criminal record.

One thing that the Pats have, and the jets don’t…the G.O.A.T.

  21. Patriots are the scum of the league

I’m sensing that you’re not quite in the spirit of this sure to be great game.

  22. Who have the Jets played that is any good? Colts? They were playing horrible when they played them.
    Dolphins? LOL! Redskins? Another LOL!
Eagles? They were also playing horrible when they played them. Browns? Another bad team that had Johnny “Beerball” Manziel for their QB in that game.
Granted the Pats haven’t played the cream of the crop of the NFL but they are SB Champions and are 8-3 vs Jets since 2010.

  23. Imagine that. A guy who was suspended four games this year for substance abuse opening his big mouth.
He must think he still plays for big mouth Rex Ryan. But like Ryan, he won’t be able to back it up.

Here’s the deal. If the Jets were as good as the Patriots across the board (they’re not) and if the Jets had a QB (they don’t), they might have a chance to keep the game close.

But alas, the Patriots still own them and the division.

  24. Patriots will win a close, hard-fought contest and then relax and enjoy the glorified bye weeks against the Fins and Skins.

It never ceases to amaze me how often the word “great” is thrown around these days.
You say the Jets have a “great” defense.
No they don’t. They have a good defense, but it’s far from great.
The Broncos have the best defense in the NFL right now, but it’s not a great defense, either.

Please — let’s let the Jets defense earn that term before we flippantly hand it to them.

  26. It’s never smart to predict a road win at Gillette Stadium. It’s more rare than a Bigfoot sighting. They’ll be lucky if it’s close.

The NFL waits until legal course of action before league sanctions are processed. And this “guarantee” is totally taken out of context and is one of hundreds of reasons people hate the media. If Buster Skrine and/or Marcus Williams don’t play, it’s going to be really tough to stop the Patriots.

  28. The Jets have played no one and they only beat Indy because of a non contact goal line fumble. Reality will set in this week.

Go ahead thumbs me down. You know deep down you’re right.

  29. So now we can’t say “great”, Neal? Nobody said “all-time”. And Denver’s defense is absolutely GREAT this season. Pay attention and stop being so bitter.

  30. Sheldon apparently forgot about Gillette’s bugged visitor’s locker room, the rigged clock controllers, and Kraft’s fubar wallet-fluffed refs.

  31. They might be able to hold the Patriots to 30. I just think the Jets will have a tough time putting up 24 on the Pats. I’m not seeing a Jets win.

  32. Is it me, or do Pats fans come across as smug? Don’t overlook this Jet team. Rex is in Buffalo.

  33. Nothing wrong with being confident in the game plan and hoping to execute it well enough to win. There doesn’t seem like there is honestly much there. In terms of media contrived disrespect this really doesn’t even move the needle. Really looking forward to this game, it has the potential to be a great strength on strength matchup in a season that has seen way to few quality games.

The folks that think Revis will be on Gronk really need to think a little more about how both players are used, what their strengths are and where they line up. The only time that matchup will happen is if the Pats line Gronk up at WR, which does occasionally happen but is not likely to be a big part of this particular game plan after all BB is not going to make it easy for for the Jets to isolate on him. Conversely Bowles isn’t going to put Revis in a position where he has to muscle his way through traffic, it’s not his game.

Yes, and we’re usually right too. The Pats beat the Jets. Book it.

  35. Pats fans might be smug, but the actual team playing the game NEVER overlooks anyone because BB doesn’t allow it. Who cares if the fans over look the Jets, they are playing the game

Revis spent a lot of time working out with Brady and Gronk when he was with the Patriots – it made both of them better when Revis was covering Gronk in practice

So Revis actually has a fair amount of experience covering Gronk and going up against Brady in practices

  37. From 2014:

“I’m not treating him like Superman,” Richardson told Rich Cimini of ESPN.com Wednesday. “He’s Tom Brady, I’m Sheldon Richardson. He’s a name. He’s a figure, a franchise player. I’m trying to get after him, simple as that. No one really treats him like [Superman] around here. I think he’s the complete opposite of that”

This was followed by a Brady victory in NY to seal the first seed.

Gilchrist also says they have to prep for Brady the same as they do for Kirk Cousins.

So Brady suddenly is the same as Kirk Cousins in terms of preparation???

What are these guys talking about??? They are completely clueless.

If you are able to win, just go win. Why talk. It just can’t help you.

I don’t think Revis can cover a TE all game or they’ll just let Gronk stay in to block and take Revis out of the game. Revis will likely pick up Edelman unless it’s obvious that Gronk will run a passing route.

    ———-++++———-
Not necessarily, no. They could execute everything correctly in a bad gameplan and lose. Or do everything right and yet lose on a few bad refereeing calls. So try not to be so picky with a player’s simp!e turn of phrase to reporters.

  41. So Revis actually has a fair amount of experience covering Gronk and going up against Brady in practices

So….Gronk and Brady have a fair amount of experience beating Revis in practices

  42. “Explain to me again how the integrity of the game is not diminished by Sheldon being able to play and not being suspended?”

Sheldon Richardson’s behaviors, loathsome though they might be, have nothing whatsoever to do with the “integrity of the game.” His personal behaviors are orthogonal to the fairness of the game on the field.

And I say this as a Patriots fan, and long-time despiser of the Jets…

  43. Brady says read the rule book and the league launches the Spanish Inquisition

This borderline menace to society gets nada and then flaps his gums? A person with any sense would keep his mouth shut. But apparently he feels he has nothing to fear. It seems there’s a protective layer around certain players.

I think I see what’s going on here.

    ——————————-
Denver’s defense are looking very good, but they’ve so far faced teams with a combined record of 10-24 (0.294) – even if you strip out their losses to Denver it’s 10-18 (0.357). They really have to beat a whole bunch of top teams before you can say “great”.

  45. This is the same lummox that went 143 mph with a 12 year old kid and a gun in the backseat. Sounds like a bright dude….don’t piss off the patriots more than they are already pissed off

  46. he just couldn’t help himself. coach bowles must be pissed. coach bowles is a pro so he looks at Richardson as an immature player. us fans think he is nothing but trouble…..BUT he is one tough son of a gun so he will get away with anything

  47. NFL fans, you never stop amazing me. HAHAHAHA

Pats twitter account posts the butt fumble pic, and the fans collectively spin themselves into an uproar. Pats have no class. That pic isn’t relevant anymore, blah blah blah.

Richardson talking about how all they have to do to get a win is execute, as if its just that easy to go into Foxboro and win (like he hasn’t played a Jets/Pats game in Foxboro before), and the response is, “well, he’s right”, or “the kid is just speaking with confidence”. You people are hysterical.

Guess what Sheldon, this year, you wont have the refs inflating Brady’s footballs to 16 psi to help keep you in the game…

  48. I’m tired of the trolls, and ogres running their mouths with their uninformed emotional opinions. How can you say NE hasn’t played anyone? NE doesn’t make their schedule, and it isn’t their fault players are suspended/injured when they play them. When Brady or Gronk were hurt nobody said these things when NE lost those games because of it, just cuz haters are happy to see NE lose at any cost smh. DEN lost to CLE twice in one game last week but is it DEN fault CLE couldn’t take advantage? NE haters pray every night before bed that some team beats NE so they can feel better emotionally it’s pathetic. Underneath all the whining and crying all I hear is, I hate NE because they win all the time. #Cowards #RespectTommyTitle #OnToRing5

Yes jbwhale, SOME of them do but hopefully not all of us. That 10% or so, a disproportionate number of whom post here, could learn a little from the way our team handles itself. It is a curiosity even to us that they do not.

@imodan, an arrogant winner is almost as insufferable as a sore loser. Think about the contempt we hold the 12’s in. It’s okay for us as Pats fans to have the confidence of someone that has been there before, after all we have. It’s not okay to act like we are entitled to it or to disrespect a quality opponent. Note the use of the word quality there, it excludes the colts from the conversation
