The Jets plan to sign veteran punter Steve Weatherford Saturday ahead of their Sunday game vs. the Patriots, per multiple reports. ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the news first.

The Giants cut Weatherford at the end of the preseason. He was due to make more than $2 million.

Weatherford, 32, was previously with the Jets in 2009-10.

Jets punter Ryan Quigley is uestionable for Sunday’s game with a shin injury, and this signing indicates Quigley won’t play. Quigley was not listed on the injury report until Saturday.

Weatherford averaged 46.3 yards per punt in his four seasons with the Giants and averages 44.5-yards per punt for his career. He finished the preseason with an average net of 45.0 yards on 16 punts.
