Ravens don’t mind airing out the officials for bad calls

AP

Early this season, the NFL sent out a memo to its member clubs to not publicly complain about officiating.

The league might need to send another one, or make sure the Ravens got theirs.

After last night’s loss to the Cardinals, the Ravens put an entire story on their team website, complete with embedded video, complaining about calls they believe went against them last night.

“Everybody has that app Yelp, and you have reviews. Two stars,” wide receiver Steve Smith said.

With some of the calls, the Ravens have a legitimate beef, hence the story under the headline: “Ravens React to Questionable Referee Calls.”

The illegal formation penalty on reserve offensive lineman John Urschel was fairly egregious, as Urschel ran straight in the direction of referee Ron Torbert while motioning toward his jersey, a clear signal he was reporting as eligible. Quarterback Joe Flacco even pointed to Urschel to try to emphasize the point.

“I can’t hear what they’re saying out there, but it looked like he saw what we were saying and said something and then blew his whistle,” Flacco said. “So I just assumed it was all good.”

But the officials called an illegal formation anyway, negating a reception by Urshcel, and the Ravens ended up settling for a a field goal.

“John did everything he’s supposed to do in this situation, just as he’s coached,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Joe looked at it, he saw it, I saw it. Then there was an announcement; you couldn’t hear what the announcement was because you never can.”

Again, the officials on the field clearly screwed up. If Torbert didn’t see Urschel report, he should have. That should be addressed at a league level. But the Ravens should probably also expect a scolding for calling the league on its latest embarrassing officiating mistake in such a public forum.

  1. How are these clowns any different from the replacements? The only difference is we saw them on TV once a week for years.

They, like the high school refs, have no clue how to call the game they’re getting paid six figures to officiate. Everyone was all over the replacement refs but they did a HELL of a job considering the circumstances. The “full-time” refs are abysmal.

  2. Not to mention the play where Chris Johnson had clearly stopped his momentum and no whistle blew.

  3. That’s because NOBODY complains more than the Ravens coach, players and fans.

And can we PLEASE get this IDIOT Ray Lewis off TV?!
Has there ever been a bigger moron on TV? You can’t even understand half the words that come out of his mouth.

  4. The tough, hard nosed AFC North Ravens whining and complaining? Must be the day after a game. Hey, If the Ravens didn’t try to use a cheating deceptive formation that they begged the NFL to “take a closer look at this offseason” maybe we could have some sympathy for them.

  5. Make everything review-able, make the league review every call, don’t put it on a coach challenge system.

  6. Bad calls or not, you are what your record says you are, and right now it says you are one of the worst teams in the league.

  7. So was it the poor officiating or was it the headsets going out that’s to blame for the Ravens’ loss?

If there’s a microphone nearby you can bet John Harbaugh will be crying about something.

  8. Sounds like we now have ourselves “airing Out Dirty Laundry Gate”. When the Patriots violated the wishes of the NFL, sent out via memo, they lost a first round draft pick, and received $750 thousand dollars in fines (coach/team). I’m just going to go ahead and assume that, contrary to the belief that the Pats are favored, the Ravens wont receive that kind of treatment. I’m sure the NFL will send the Ravens a sort of angry letter, and call it a day

  9. I haven’t seen the play, but the description is not how one is to report to the referee. Running at the ref pointing to your jersey is not how you report eligible. Going to the ref and telling him you are reporting eligible is how it is done. Maybe the description left out that he actually talked to the ref, but if he didn’t then he didn’t report in.

  10. Come on Harbaugh. You are not 1-6 because of poor officiating. You are 1-6 because of poor coaching. You may not want the advice, but suggest you look at Belichick as an example. He coaches for every eventuality, every situation, including crowd noise and poor officiating. You might want to try some of that.

  11. More CRYBAUGHING….
This should be the new terminology for what comes out of any ravens fan or coach or player anytime they feel slighted… I mean that’s all we are guaranteed to get whenever they open their mouths… Lol!!

  12. Maybe if Harbaugh hadn’t bitched and moaned so loudly after the Pats used it in the playoffs, and didnt get the rule change, then maybe the refs wouldnt be so confused by it.

I just think its funny that he keeps resorting to these plays after bitching out the Pats for using them.

  13. Coach whaaaabaugh at it again. Clearly the ref didn’t see him because when they make that announcement they make the ‘obvious’ signal themselves, which the ref did not do. Learn the rule book you babies!

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha

  14. I am happy when the Ravens lose, but they got no justice: the illegal formation, and the the stopped Chris Johnson – who was all wrapped up by someone needing only to be as strong as my grandma.

  15. That was a bad call no question. Butt bad calls happen all the time no matter how good the officials are. But coaches of good teams don’t blame officiating for outcomes of games.

Harbaugh gets some satisfaction from whining all the time. Now that the Ravens season is over maybe that will give him some comfort.

  16. They complain about everything…..calls, teams, balls, you name it, they moan about it. Start winning, and shaddup Baltimore.

  17. Blows my mind that fans respect teams like the Ravens more than the Pats. Every time this team loses they complain about officiating and now their communication system was down for the final drive (which according to Tomlin only happens in NE). Belichick and the Patriots never make excuses all they ever say is we have to continue working to get better. THATS why they are by far the most well coached team in the league. Belichick is head and shoulders above everyone else. Coaches like Harbaugh and Tomlin are embarrassing whiners. I’d be ashamed to root for them.

  18. They should change the Headline to “Ravens don’t mind looking like Crybabies when they lose”

  19. Refs seem to be an integral part of the outcome of too many games. Time for them to start getting fined, suspended, and fired for bad performance.

  20. I think the ref was just spacing out right then. Isn’t the guy a new referee? Maybe put him on Houston Texans games where nobody will see his mistakes.

  21. The officiating has been especially horrible this season. I know of at least 5 games this season where bad officiating has played a major role in deciding the outcome of a game.

    It’s becoming the norm.

  22. That’s even harder to miss than the clock screw-up and the batted ball incident a few weeks ago. And all three happen in prime time games. You’d have to imagine that this official will be getting the same treatment from the league.

  23. I’m usually very quick to point out whining by Harbaugh, but in this case (actually these cases) he is right.

  24. But the officials called an illegal formation anyway, negating a reception by Urshcel, and the Ravens ended up settling for a a field goal.

See, it has nothing to do with the Patriots. Or perhaps payback for initiating the biggest hoax of the millenium? Or maybe for the SB you were handed?

Face it, in Lewis’s last season, you got every call every time. I wonder why they even bothered playing out the season since it was more important to deify a person of highly questionable character than have a season of integrity.

  25. Another week, another chronic case of “Harbaugh Face.” Somebody call a whambulance! We was wronged!”

  26. If it went against the all-knowing John Harbaugh, it must be wrong. Egregiously wrong.

  27. I laughed when I was watching this. Harbaugh tried the ole BB formation gadget play!!! The ref must have been hungover cause he rubbed his chest more then a stripper in a club on a Friday night!!!…Another gaff by the refs!!! Nice job….

  28. Wah wah wah. Typical comment from a Harbaugh. Ravens are bad and everyone knows it but the coach

  29. Fans are quick to claim a coach is a whiner when it’s pretty clear that NFL officiating is broken and getting worse. I applaud the Ravens (not a Ravens fan) and would hope my Dolphins and the other 30 teams get on board. If the NFL doesn’t like it to bad. Fix the problem!

  30. Seems like the refs are getting worst every year. There some crews you see at your team’s game and know it’s going to be a long day. Triplett and Boger comes to mind.

  31. I have absolutely no love at all for the Ratbirds. But they are right here.
The officiating has been steadily getting worse for a decade now, and all the NFL does about it is make the rule book more complicated.
You would think a multi-billion dollar industry could afford to have full time officials who spend their time training and learning so they can make accurate, consistent calls on game day. Too many outcomes are being affected by terrible officiating.

  32. Of course they Ravens do not mind, in partnership with the Colts, Jets, Steelers and Jeff Fisher the Ravens own the NFL executive team and can whine and cheat to their hearts content without any threat of punishment from the league office.

  33. And why do all pro leagues have this nonsensical rule? Are the officials in pro sports so perpetually butt-hurt and thin-skinned that they can’t take any criticism, no matter how warranted?

The league office is completely oblivious to the fact that officiating is so bad, and the rules so convoluted (no one knows what a catch is), that a growing percentage of the population thinks these games are fixed. When you have calls like this, the batted ball, and that farce of an “interception” early in Sunday night’s game, and it’s logical to conclude that, at a minimum, the league office has expressed a desired game winner to the officials.

Make these officials full-time, so they can spend all year memorizing the whole rule book, watching tape and working with teams so everyone knows what they’re doing.

And make them man up, act like they’ve got a pair and take constructive criticism like an adult.

  34. Yeah don’t assume Ravens.
Make 100% sure before you execute the play.

This is the best Ravens season ever

  35. scolding? What about the integrity of the game? Sportsmanship dictates you don’t argue with the refs. League sends a memo not to argue with refs. Ravens repeatedly break that memo. Nothing is done. Welcome to the world of the NFL where rules are disciplined at random.

  36. Nice to see the Ravens initially were pissed when the Patriots successfully pulled off the Eligible/Ineligible play three times in the same game and they can’t do it two times in 7 games. KARMA’S A BITC…

  37. I think there’s a line where you can and should be able to talk about ref’s failures. It a grey one, for sure, but they can’t be infallible because they are human and make mistakes. As long as it’s done respectfully, I see no problem with this.

I know in soccer leagues, they have like a ref arbitration court or whatever, where if you badmouth the refs, they look at it and determine if it was legitimate issues or just being a dink and you may or may not get fined accordingly.

I see this one as a legit concern where the ref seemed to make the call then penalized them for it. That needs to be taken care of by the NFL, not swept under the rug of fining the Ravens for “Just another Harbaugh whine fest”.

The only thing I would add is that Flacco and Urschel should have completely confirmed that they were indeed seen. Just assuming it happened, regardless of how obvious it might have felt like, doesn’t mean it did.

  38. Different Rules…

When the Patriots run the play illegally, the refs do nothing, they just let them get away with it. The Ravens get a penalty for complaining.

When the Ravens run the play legally, the refs convene, then make the wrong call, then the Ravens get penalized.

  39. You know, EVEN if the Ravens are correct and the refs blew the call, the hypocrisy here is just too obvious with Harbaugh.

HE is the one who just a few months ago was complaining about being fooled by a LEGAL trick formation. HE was the guy, who got his buddies on the rules committee to change the rules. And now HE has become the king of the trick formations this year, trying to benefit from the rule change he got implemented. How ripe is THAT!

CRY BABY John. Your team has earned that 1-6 record. Suck it up and get them to play better like a good HC would., Now it looks like you are just resting on your laurels.

  40. Where shall I begin? At the failed ineligible/eligible copycat play from the Pats? The same ones they complained about. Or should I start with their HC whining and complaining on every play? Maybe I should move to the QB who seems to be totally indifferent to everything happening around him.

The dumpster fires in Baltimore and Indy are warming the souls of Pats fans everywhere.

  41. It is getting to the point of ridiculous the calls and non calls being made/not made in every NFL game. If the referees are so incompetent, then it is time to adopt a procedure where any call is reviewable whether it be an infraction, a turnover, or a referee’s interpretation of a rule. Keep the same number of challenges a team has but get it right!

  42. I’m no Ravens fan, but I tend to side with them on this. Teams can’t keep biting their tongues when the crazy calls just keep coming.

The mandated silence removes a layer transparency, and will continues to raise concerns over the legitimacy of the product on the field.

  43. There is a very clear precedent for the consequences of violating a league-issued memo. I expect John Harbaugh to be fined $250,000, the Ravens to be fined $500,000 and for them to be docked their first round draft pick.

  44. Harbaugh should quit whining, the NFL didn’t want the Ravens to win the Super Bowl three years ago and they did. Last year winning the Super Bowl would have been too much so they have to give the Patriots some favors on the field.

  45. #karma. LOL

Complained supremely for the Patriots activity and then again when the tide turns against them, mind you, based on their own complaining. #loosers in #looserville. hahaha

    And their team is a royal cheater. Remember: PEDSgate (4x since 2005) • Impedegate (2013) • Challengegate (2009 & 2011) • Bountygate (2008) • Deflategate (2002) • Antlergate (2013) • Injurygate (2012)?

  46. As a football fan, the illegal formation and Chris Johnson tackle were both egregious. I would expect the referees to be punished for how bad that was. The Ravens are absolutely in the right to publicly question those calls.

As a Raven fan, they still likely would not have won the game had the correct calls been made. This is just not a good team. They try hard but definite lack talent at several positions. Secondary, WRs, and now O-Line are decimated.

It’s amazing though, when the Ravens won their two Super Bowls, it seemed like they got all the breaks. This year nothing is going their way. The team with the most fluke plays will win the Super Bowl.

  47. Yet another example why Belichick’s proposal to make EVERYTHING reviewable is a good one. Mistakes happen and there should be recourse to fix it.

  48. The officiating has been terrible this year at the majority of the games. Until the league starts fining them like they do the players, it will continue.

  49. So the NFL sent out a memo telling teams they can’t do something. A team reads it and ignores it. They then proceed to do exactly the thing the league told them not to.

The last time a team did this (The Patriots), they were fined and docked a 1st round pick.

Anyone think something similar will happen?

  50. I’m not even a Ravens fan and I have to agree that those refs did a terrible job, making some calls that shouldnt have been called and not making calls that should had been called. Fine them and get in their ears. They need to go through tests before the real games. They cost teams games.

  51. Odd how many time Hairbaugh can get an official to come to him yet watching other games the officials ignore the coach. Nothing is quite as fun to watch as Hairbaugh whining on the sidelines.

  52. Guess that’s what losing does to a team. If you don’t wanna deal with the refs having control over you winning or losing…SCORE MORE POINTS THAN THE OTHER TEAM!

  53. sonhoodoo:

    =========================================

I just watched a GIF of the play in question, and Urschel clearly rubbed his chest to properly inform the ref he would be an eligible receiver down field. He did his job, and Flacco even pointed him out to back him up. The ref done screwed the pooch there.

  54. This guy is such a LOSER. Who anywhere can stand the Harbaughs?

They’re such nozzles, all entitled and whiny. Horrible example to set for the people they coach. It’s a problem in our society, actually.

Not sure where you were going with this but my back scratcher is very useful.

  57. If I am asked who do I believe did something correctly, the officials or John Harbaugh, I am going with Harbaugh.

The Ravens SHOULD be angry, the refs made the mistake and called it on the Ravens.

    NOT ACCEPTABLE.

  58. I am no fan of the Ravens nor the Cardinals for that matter. However, the officiating (in last night’s game and in many games) in the NFL this year is atrocious, obstructive, incredibly complicated and ruining this avid fan’s enjoyment of the game. The rules have simply become incomprehensible. When each broadcast affiliate needs an ex official on their broadcast team to parse what the on field rulings are, you know something has gone off the rails. I want to watch the game, not the zebras as they decipher whether a player’s butt cheek hit the turf before the ball did. The League is becoming an unfunny joke. Even though John Harbaugh is a whiner, in this case I agree with him. I hope other coaches follow his example and loudly complain about the raw deal the teams and fans are getting. Maybe I might stop watching if the product continues to be so execrable. Between the games themselves and the onslaught of DFS advertising, I am pretty close to finding another way of enjoying a few hours on a Sunday afternoon or Monday evening.

No one respects the Ravens more than the Pats. People create fake anger directed at the Pats because they are prepared, they dont disrespect opponents and they win. These days, its easier to band together and call someone a cheater, rather than work hard yourself. Its the new American culture.

  64. ““John did everything he’s supposed to do in this situation, just as he’s coached,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Joe looked at it, he saw it, I saw it. Then there was an announcement; you couldn’t hear what the announcement was because you never can.””

Those announcements are always clear. I did not hear the announcement on that substitution. I did hear it on other substitutions that night.

I agree with Harbaugh on the Johnson run. he gave himself up. If a Raven came in and buried him he would have gotten a PF..

  65. Interesting, that Mike Tirico made a point of calling out Harbaugh for his vocal complaints about the Patriots using legal formations in last year’s divisional game. That type of frank statement by a play by play announcer, especially an ESPN employee, was refreshing.

  66. And of course you have that killer, er,,,,pillar of virtue Ray Lewis on the pre- and post-game shows. Shameful.

  67. The CJ “non stoppage call” is a product of multiple levels of poor officiating. First, the officials had been blowing the whistle fast all night on forward progress, yet don’t on this play when it was obvious he was stopped and then releases after a couple seconds.

Next, I guarantee that if a LB for the ravens would have laid out CJ when he was stopped and being held, they refs would have thrown a flag for unnecessary roughness. Ravens screwed either way.

The refs make some games unwatchable by their inconsistency and boneless calls.

  68. I hate the ravens, that being said, I don’t know what’s worse nfl officiating or the rule book itself.

  69. “When you ain’t got nothing,
You ain’t got nothing to lose.”

    ——- The Famous Zimmerman

  70. So ironic how the Ravens cried and complained about the Patriots using that play in the Divisional game and then turn around and use it more than anyone else now, except they can’t run it correctly and the Patriots actually can.

And do the Ravens ever lose and just give credit to the other team? Every time something doesn’t go their way and they lose they spend time whining about the refs and any borderline call that they didn’t get. Shut up and play the game

  71. Harbaugh is known league wide as a whiner. It’s hurting the integrity of the game. I say they set up a sting operation. Have the refs purposely blow a call. Have TWells and his crew bug the locker room and confront Harbaugh with the evidence. Get him Roger. Before he tries to change more rules.

    _____________

I don’t even know what this means.

  78. I am not a fan of the Ravens or Cardinals, but this game had way too many officiating blunders. The NFL needs to be reviewing every play. The officials have shown they cannot implement the rules consistently game to game. The catch rule is one that seems to change weekly. How about, if you have possession of the ball and two feet down, it is a catch. No more you have to hold it if you are falling to the ground or you have to make a football move. They missed one this weekend when the player reached the ball to the goal line on the way to the ground. When the ball hit the ground he lost possession and it was ruled incomplete. I would think reaching for the goal line is a football move. Two feet with possession and you made the catch. It really is that simple.

  79. i agree that the call last night seemed pretty one sided against the ravens.

however, on the CJ play, you play until the whistle blows. that does not mean incurring a penalty for unsportmanlike conduct, it means you don’t let go.

I find it interesting that the refs are all over the ravens, according to the baltimore posters, it was the pats who were going to get the bad calls this year.

I totally blame Godell for the refs, he put Blandino in charge, a TV remote control expert with zero football, never mind, refereeing experience.

The refs are looking to get Blandino fired it appears.

Harbaugh and the colts for complaining after an explicit memo was issued against it, should lose a draft pick, if they don’t then there is obvious Godell favoritism to Biscotti.

  80. They’re 1-6, what do they have to lose? Can’t say as I can really blame them in the current situation.

Also, agree with others about the steady run of horrible officiating and daily fantasy advertising putting a real drain on the viewing experience.

  81. Failing to whistle the Chris Johnson play dead when it was obvious that his forward progress had stopped and the play was over was one of the worst calls (non-calls, actually) I’ve ever seen.

  82. I’m a Ravens fan and am actually glad this season is going the way it is. We’re not out of these games, but we don’t have the horses and I want a top draft pick.
But the officials have got to be better. They can’t play the injury card. they can’t have any excuses. The NFL needs to make these guys full time employees so they can work on their skill set year round, plain and simple.

Hold on a second. How did the Ravens fumble signaling the refs that Urschel would be an eligible receiver? Did you watch the play? Urschel absolutely identified himself properly, and Flacco pointed him out as well. Urschel was directly in the ref’s field of vision, so it’s not like he was being sneaky about anything. The refs screwed the pooch here, so the Ravens have a legitimate gripe.

  86. Harbaugh is changing.

As a Steeler fan, the culture of the two or three annual “Black & Blue Bowl” games was to marginalize officiating. It just did not matter. It is violent tough competitive football. Every game.

I think the emerging rivalry between the Ravens and the Patriots is getting Harbaugh into this more head game/cerebral type approach where nit picking every official and call has become the Harbaugh signature. Sometimes I feel like he is auditioning for Dean Blandino’s job.

Maybe this mixed culture approach is what is making the team’s performance so shockingly bad this year.

    DITTO!

  88. Not a fan of either team but objectively bad officiating, and worse than bad, it was one sided bad.

Chris Johnson made a smart play, he clearly knew what he was doing; he sat on the tackler, completely stopped, and with no whistle he slowly got up and then once out of reach started to run.

You know whats gonna happen next. A guy will have his momentum stopped, be in the grasp, and someone’s gonna come in and put a helmet in his chest, and it will happen before a whistle, and then they’ll throw the flag for unnecessary roughness.

The NFL cant have it both ways when it comes to safety.

  89. I have no love for the Ravens. Call him a whiner all you want. They tell me how it feels when your team gets hosed by bad calls. NFL wake up and do something. This is getting old.

    Signed a Bengals Fan

  90. Not a Ravens fan at all, but as a fan I think they should absolutely call out bad officiating. There is zero accountability from the league and the officials, who often make game-changing decisions. I also don’t understand how a league who is obviously dollar-obsessed can ignore the fact that the fans, media and everyone associated with the sport HATES all of the ticky-tack penalties that disrupt the game and have no positive impact (minor holding, illegal shift or formation, lined up behind the line, pick block, inducing a false start, and all the rest). Stop ignoring the entire world on this, NFL. Stop with the bull$hit penalties and let the guys play.

  91. Lions fan here – no dog in this fight.

Harbaugh is right. The league is wrong to say these guys can’t criticize the poor officiating that plagues this league.

If the NFL doesn’t want to hear about the poor officiating they should hire and train some capable officials. Most of these refs look like they’re pushing 70. WTH?!?

The tough, hard nosed AFC North Ravens whining and complaining? Must be the day after a game. Hey, If the Ravens didn’t try to use a cheating deceptive formation that they begged the NFL to “take a closer look at this offseason” maybe we could have some sympathy for them.
    **********

The Ravens formation last night was text book vanilla Eligible Reciever. The Referee was looking right at the huddle as (soon to be Dr.) Urschel ran on the field motioning eligible (practically the whole way from stripe to huddle).

The deception in what the Pats pulled was that the guy reporting as Ineligible motioned as Eligible. Everyone thinks the Pats are geniuses because they figured out a trick to gain infinite lives in Super Mario Bros.

  93. They need to keep quiet. The refs gave them the 49ers/ravens
superbowl with multiple non-calls against them

  94. Man… Anyone else notice all the New Money up in this piece?

The Johnson play was ridiculous. By all intents and purposes, the dude was down. You had 2 safeties standing above him that could have easily piled on, but held back. Yeah, yeah, play to the whistle, but the league has emphasized watching ‘cleaning up the pile’ this year, so why risk a 15 Yard penalty and drill a guy with a late hit?

The Ref was also apparently looking for the eligible receiver he missed earlier on the ‘Gritty’ Larry Fitzgerald ‘Block’. And by ‘block’ I mean pretty egregious facemask grab and twist take down move. He had a hold of it so long, in surprised it didn’t pop off.

So gritty! Just like when Arians had Hines Ward!

  95. Oh… And Tirico didn’t ‘call Harbaugh out’ over the Pats Playoff game, he said that if anyone knows the rules on these formations, it’s the Ravens.

I guess in Patriots Land, that is criticism?

And can the Web Deisgner do something about putting ‘Report Comment’ directly below the Thumbs Up/Down?

Thumbs up to the ‘Bengals Fan’ that I fat-finger reported. UHG.

  96. Pats fans have no understanding about the Ravens’ complaints because NFL officials always favor their team. If Brady is even breathed on there’s a personal foul flag. Pats DBs and OL get away with a lot more holding/grabbing than other teams. They can run illegal plays and get away with it. Must be nice.

  97. It’s been said that Harbaugh then complained about Jefferson’s interception. He yelled at the ref saying that Jefferson wasn’t supposed to catch the ball, Gilmore was.

  98. Every week no matter what coaches and players have to face the music and media for boneheaded things they do. Right Chuck Pagano…But ref and umpires (in other sports) are shielded from this scrutiny and teams players are punished for speaking about them. These officials are not volunteers they get paid for their “work” why can’t they take 5-7 minutes after a game to answer some tough questions?

  99. This seems to be a continual problem in the NFL this year, bad calls costing teams wins. I know every game there are bad calls and that’s to be expected but bad calls at crucial times costing teams games is unacceptable. You should be able to use your challenge on penalties. What’s the difference. Either way challenges are because the refs made a wrong call. I’m not a Ravens fan but just a football fan sick of the ridiculous amount and kind of calls they make that ruin games.

  100. Between the illegal formation call and when the refs let Johnson get up and run for 61 yards despite the fact that his forward progress was clearly stopped (and if the Ravens had tackled him they would’ve gotten penalized), the officiating last night was absolutely pitiful. But yet, because the NFL has a gag rule on coaches and players from talking about obvious blunders made by the refs, more games will continue to be influenced by incompetent officials. Instead of penalizing coaches for criticizing horrible and blatantly incorrect calls, why doesn’t the NFL deal with the real problem, hold their officials accountable, and penalize them for flagrant errors and inept officiating?

  101. Cards fan who was at the game last night. Lost in all the noise about Harbaugh being a whiner, is the simple fact that he’s right. The officiating is awful and has gotten progressively worse the past few years, while Goodell sits by and worries more about stuff like appealing dumb cases he’s already spent 8 figures on and lost. There were a ton of bad calls last night, including those mentioned. There was also an egregious 12 men in the huddle violation that wasn’t called against Baltimore very late in the game. It’s an outrage and needs to be fixed, but Goodell doesn’t seem to care one bit. He needs to be gone.

  102. Ravens fan here and these are my opinions:

-The Ravens are VERY bad this year. Yes, they have been in every game, no more than one score. However, too much of the team is just not performing. The secondary is laughable. They routinely play too far off then miss the first tackle. The line is over rated and Flacco is constantly running for his life within one second. Next to zero production out of the 75 young WRs we have is killing the team.

-The refs are just as bad. They are not the reason that the team is bad, but man, it piles on. They seem to have gotten lax on when to blow a whistle, what is a tackle, and just general procedural stuff. It has made many games unwatchable for me.

-The rules change way to much. What is a catch, what can be challenged, substitution rules, celebrations, shoe color. This makes it hard for the fans, the guys calling the games and the refs to follow.

-Harbaugh/Flacco has spoiled us. 1-6 sucks, but it is their ONLY bad year in 8. Relax and see what they can learn for next year.

-The salary cap for next year scares me. Flacco’s mega-contract is about to hit hard, currently about $30 million against the cap next year. It was always intended to be re-worked, but after a bad year what do you do? Extend him for more money? Can’t trade/release him, he holds all the cards again. Jimmy Smith counts a ton as well. Since he got his deal he has been horrible. This may be a multi-year purge. Once we recover we will have to start thinking about drafting/teaching the replacement for Flacco unless we plan to draft a rookie and throw in out there in 5-10 years.

-Still hate the Colts and have learned to hate the Steelers. This part is OK this year. 🙂

  103. Ohh hell no, us Bills fans got lit up for complaining about a bad call but now that if affected the Ravens you want to cry about it !? ..

Stop complaining babies !! remember ? score touchdowns and win the game, don’t worry about a bad call, it happens everywhere ..

This is why bad calls should be reviewable, period.

  104. There is always going to be missed calls…kind of like Superbowl XLVII where Crabtree was absolutely mugged on the final play. Keep crying Ravens

  105. Why did the Balt D lineman (who made that great tackle of CJ) let him go before a whistle?
Playing to the whistle is an overused phrase, mainly because it’s true.
That was a great “awareness” play by CJ, even though the refs bungled the whole thing.

Pats fans do understand Balt’s gripe. Harbaugh is correct, but whining and crying only serves to perpetuate the “poor me” persona he values so much.

Calls tend to even out over a game and if they don’t sometimes, then they don’t.
Play better and win the game. Remove the Ref’s ability to impact the game with a few bad calls.

  106. Different Rules…

When the Patriots run the play illegally, the refs do nothing, they just let them get away with it. The Ravens get a penalty for complaining.

When the Ravens run the play legally, the refs convene, then make the wrong call, then the Ravens get penalized.
    ——————————————-
Very witty, except totally incorrect. Pats play was legal. Nice try, though.

    _________________________

Wrong…The league corrected the Patriots call. It should have been a penalty. You wouldn’t know because you don’t care. I do.

    Typical sequence
Patriots commit foul that goes without even review by the refs
Ravens complain and get penalized for complaining
Later, the Refs are proven wrong and should have penalized the Patriots

Ravens commit foul. Refs stop play to review, then make the wrong call.
Ravens get penalized for a play that they ran better than the Patriots.
Later, the Refs are proven wrong and the Ravens should not have been penalized.

  107. The issue is NOT bad calls! The issue is bad call calls always against the same teams: Ravens, Detroit Lions, Buffalo. The issue is bad calls that favor different teams: Patriots

  108. When was the last bad call that affected the outcome of a Patriots game???

    Crickets

When was the last bad call that affected the outcome of a Ravens or Lions game??

    Lets wheel in the evidence.

  109. Oh wow…Crabtree was roughed up in the end zone? That is your evidence?

Wrong..that is judgment call. We got 25 angles and slo mo with the television broadcast.

    Rather..

How about the Lee Evans drop in the end zone? Did we get one replay or booth review? Did they stop play, or did the Patriots win because the Ravens kicker had to rush onto the field in the last few seconds of the game?

  110. How ironic that the whining crying Harbaugh who cried all the way to the nfl and got a rule change because the Pats ran an eligible/non-eligible play last year are now having difficulty doing it themselves. What complete and utter hypocrites. Where are all the haters decrying the trick play? More hypocrites. Not to mention that against the Raiders this year the Ravens ran the exact play the Patriots ran last season over which they cried and whined and got the rule change. They used slightly different personnel to get around the rule change they had the nfl make. Unbelievable.

  111. The Ravens play this weekend illustrates perfectly the double standard different rules for the Patriots.

It is NOT about how to run the play. It is NOT about the rules.

Who cares about the rules when the Refs officiate differently for the Patriots versus the Ravens. When the Patriots do the trick play, the refs just continue as if nothing happened. When the Ravens do the trick play, they stop play, they convene, then they ultimately make the wrong play. However, when Lee Evans catches a ball momentarily in the end zone against the Patriots…no review…hurry up get your kicker out there.

This is not about RULES, this is about FAIR PLAY.
This is why the Brady suspension for cheating is so ridiculous – again different rules.

  112. In other words….For all those Patriot fans who seem to think that cheating is fine….It is worse that the Refs HELP the Patriots to cheat, and they absolutely stymie the Ravens from cheating.
