NFL meeting with Manziel about incident with girlfriend

AP

A few hours after Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters that Johnny Manziel’s meeting with the NFL was “imminent,” Manziel is meeting with NFL investigators.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported Wednesday evening that NFL officials are in Cleveland to discuss with Manziel the October 12 incident with his girlfriend that included a visit from a suburban police department. No charges were filed, but both Manziel and Collen Crowley admitted to drinking and Crowley said in the original police report that Manziel had pushed her head against a window.

The NFL is investigating whether Manziel violated the league’s personal conduct policy. Manziel spent almost three months last winter in a rehab facility for an undisclosed issue. It’s not known if he’s in the league’s substance abuse program.

The league can discipline players even if criminal charges are not brought.

Manziel got the No. 1 reps in the Browns’ practice Wednesday because Josh McCown is dealing with a sore shoulder. No announcement on a starter for Sunday’s game is expected until later in the week. Before filling in for McCown in the fourth quarter last week, Manziel had not played since Week 2.

It’s uncertain when the NFL will announce any findings from its investigation.

  1. Browns fans deserve better than the nonsense they’ve had to put up with for so long.

    -Patriots fan

  2. Well, if there’s one guy in the NFL who couldn’t be more sensitive to the plight of women who are victims of abuse, it’s Roger Goodell

Hah! No I’m just joking. Roger is an idiot who has never had a job outside of the NFL offices – all of this is a sham and if Roger’s job approval post Manziel is anything similar to his 28% support of NFL fans post Ray Rice VideoGate, then I expect Goodell to fabricate ANOTHER false scandal to take everyone’s mind off of what a screw up he is

  3. emulating Chris Brown with your GF is something you probably don’t wanna associate yourself with,

I bet the NFL doesn’t want to have fans get the impression they think it’s OK

    something is going to happen

  4. man, manziel is officially in the same class with ray rice and greg hardy. way to go young man.
    #smh

  5. He destroyed his cell phone in the parking lot before the meeting. Because, you know, he does that every six months.

  6. “The league can discipline players even if criminal charges are not brought. ”

Does anybody else get the feeling that an NFL player could rush into a burning house to save a little girl and Goodell would suspend him for breaking and entering?

  7. Admit this guy is a alcoholic with big problems and get in on. Put him in the program and do it soon.

” Hi, my name is Johnny Football and I am a quarterback”

“Ok who just booed me stand up”.

  8. You browns fan take a back seat to the Deeeeeeeeeeeetroit Lions. No way your teams incompetence over the years can match the incompetence of Detroit. Your not in the same league.

  9. While he’s in town interrogating Johnny, Ted Wells needs suggestions for places to unwind after hours. Maybe something in The Flats?

  10. I’m not saying he did or did not do anything wrong but Johnny doesn’t get it. either he checked into rehab for character defense or he really is an alcoholic. But if he were, those who truly wish to get better take years before they feel ok enough to have a drink, if ever. Did he do his time, win public perception and think he’s in the clear? Or does he really have an issue that was on the road to recovery and relapse?

Either way, this issue goes deeper than did he do something wrong or not.

Again, I am not bashing him but I’ve known true addicts and alcoholics and 6 months or however long it’s been is not enough time for someone to have recovered and be comfortable drinking again. So I suspect that he isn’t really an alcoholic but rather unable to make mature choices for himself and this blows his cover that he really wasn’t an alcoholic but used the rehab as a form of character damage control..

  11. To those who must constantly bash Goodell, I can only wish that you were in his position dealing out discipline while limited by the CBA and the federal courts. Oh, and it was your daughters/sisters involved with Rice, Hardy, and Manziel. Maybe you would have a different view?

  12. Here’s how this is going to go. He’s going to get screwed pretty good and since he’s not a star player his NFL career is doomed, even if some thought it was doomed to begin with. If we could have only been in the backseat of that car to know what really happened.

  13. @billsfan1

We should prolly just assume Manzielf himself prolly assumed the ‘rehab’ stint was merely for his ‘public image’ …?

  14. Perhaps a brain transplant would help him. Rehab was obviously a waste of time and or money.

  15. I think it’s funny how people know for what Manziel was in rehab. There are just as many pictures of him holding a $_ dollar bill rolled up as there are with him on a swan doll holding a champagne bottle. Just sayin.

  16. Gawd I’m tired of hearing about Manziel.
He needs to just go away. He look like a little kid out there on the field, and his off the field antics are just as bad. A simple case of a kid getting a huge head over his college career and going bust when he reaches the NFL.
    He’s the Kardashian of football…

So you have known true addicts and alcoholics and none of them ever Relaspe.

  18. I’ll bet they’ll conclude that she’s the source of his issues. She’s an enabler, she crashed his rehab, is around when he’s being dumb. She won’t be happy until he burns. Sad that the guy is too weak to admit it.

  19. A true alcoholic could never drink again…..but I suspect his addiction was not alcohol., remember the rolled up dollar on the bathroom……..!

  20. Everybody’s been there when they were young, or at least heard about it from their friends. You get in an argument with some drunken babe and the crazy chick opens the door while you are rambkin’ down the highway.

The cop had been there. He knew. He showed good judgement.

The bonehead that talked to the press wasn’t a Browns fan. Now it’s the worst possible scenario with Goodell sticking his rosacea-ridden nose in. Is this what we want in a commissioner?

  21. No harsh comments?
“He’s an idiot! Scumbag! What a filthy excuse for a human being! Gone from the league in 3 years, broke in 4!”

Oh wait, this guy doesn’t fit those stereotypes.,

  22. Boy, if Jerruh wanted to draft Manziel before, just think what he would offer now that Manziel has put himself in the same company as Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and Dez Bryant! Maybe 2, #1’s???

  23. Don’t worry Browns fans Roger will get to the bottom of this! He’ll surely be honest, wise, and fair in his dealings with you in this case, as he always is. Don’t you worry, Roger is man of great honor, wisdom and integrity!
