Sammy Watkins posts-deletes criticism of “loser” critics

AP

Unlike two weeks ago when he complained about getting enough touches, Sammy Watkins was able to delete a regrettable message.

Of course, this one was on in the internet, which means it will never go away.

Via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News, Watkins mocked fans who were criticizing him for being injured by calling them “losers” with “little jobs” in a since-deleted Instagram post because they dared question him.

Aside from being a terrible idea, and being executed poorly (punctuation is underrated), Watkins’ frustration is understandable.

He can’t control being injured any more than he can control the number of times his quarterbacks throw to him, and fans browbeating him for that is in poor taste too.

But what he can do is handle each situation with a modicum of human decency, and that’s something that the Bills’ training staff won’t be able to help him with.

  1. Still not as bad as getting caught in the 2 biggest cheating scandals that the NFL has ever faced.

  2. Did you really just have the nerve to call him out on his punctuation while using the phrase “criticizing at him?” Especially when one of you gets paid to write and the other is paid to play football.

  3. If he had a coach who could mentor him on dealing with the public instead of acting like an ass clown this probably would have never happened.

  4. If I were a coach, I would have social media training for the players. They would think we were going to tell them what to say and what not to, but we’d actually just hire English teachers to belittle them and teach them the language for the first time in their lives.

  5. Bills Fans: This is what’s to be expected from a blowhard leader like Rex. Tactless players devoid of a good leader and character model. You don’t deserve this, but you do because this is the bed you made, and the one you were so obnoxiously proud of going into this season. #sorrynotsorry

  6. The NFL just isn’t as fun without a good diva receiver. Now Watkins just needs to match his mouth with stellar play and we have a new TO to go with our new Rice in Cooper.

  7. You better have a good financial adviser because with the education you have, you won’t get to far in life after football. Probably cannot even get a little job.

Oh yes, believe everything you read in the Buffalo News and their reporters………..I also guess the great reporting of Jay Skurski failed to mention that his comment was in response to trolls commenting to him in a picture with him and his daughter. It just didn’t come of the blue like implied above.

  9. What a disappointing year this is been for the Bills… Loaded with arguably a top 5 defense in football and a decent O .. Rex Ryan has destroyed the team chemistry and shouldn’t make it past black Monday

  10. Maybe if he didn’t whine about getting targets when he wasn’t even playing nobody would have said a word…. But he’s a ignorant wanna be diva who won’t end up doing squat in this league… Poor poor poor man’s T O …..

    LOL!! Good one right there….

  12. Wow. He’s lucky he’s good at football as he would probably be a bit challenged in the real world with grammer skills like that. Stay classy, Sammy…

  13. Not a Bills fan but anybody making fun of them for drafting Watkins is an idiot. He was the CONSENSUS #1 WR in that draft and it was lauded as a great trade/pick at the time by virtually every draft pundit.

  14. Little jobs? What a diva. We get it, we aren’t in the NFL. At the same time Watkins probably can’t do my math homework. I have my doubts Watkins could perform some of the “little jobs” the fans have.

  15. I wouldn’t worry too much about this guy’s opinion of common folk. I’d put my hard earned money on him losing all of his NFL wages within 5 years of retirement and becoming poorer than the people he’s currently criticizing.

  16. A few things going on here:

    1) Sammy has played through injuries in the past. He’s had bad quarterbacks. He could and probably will still be very good.

    2) A lot of fans were giving him unnecessary crap on social media about going to Disneyland with his daughter during a bye week, which the players were given off.

    3) Sammy needs to just suck it up. The post was completely uncalled for. You’re going to antagonize people, telling them to stop caring about his job, when their caring about his job is the reason he’s able to make millions playing a game.

  17. Well he may have the talent but he’s for the attitude of a freaking bust, first he throws his QB under the bus and now the fans. Backing yourself in a corner there 14.

  18. He has always pretty clearly possessed less than average intelligence, and he is a kid, and I suspect he has the skin thickness of someone who rarely receives criticism. That said, this is a zero move. Also a little bit predictable. Maybe not the specific nastiness towards people who want to praise him, but predicting the lack of wisdom and judgment required to do this is not a reach. I blame Whaley.

  19. Gee so nice of the BN to mention how these comments came about… oh wait they didn’t. So it’s perfectly okay for “fans” to be verbally abusive towards the players that they “cheer” for, but it’s not okay for said player to address that problem? got it. I suppose all Bills players should avoid any media except what the NFL sanctions, that is probably the best course of action to take. I love how Sammy is the one who has to grow up but the people berating him and acting like he has no right to take a vacation during the bye week can be immature for as long as they want.

  20. When was the last time something truly worthwhile happened as a result of an athlete engaging in social media?

  21. As a pats fan. I love wrecks he ruined another AFC East rival. Send wrecks to Miami next for the tripple crown.

  22. I absolutely LOVE how fast and hoe hard the Bills fans have crashed back to earth. Not because I dislike the Bills fans. they are a great fan base. But the trash talking prior to week 2 really got to me. I love reading the trash talk back and forth on this site. I am not one to partake, I like to let the play speak, but I like to read it. But heading into week 2, the tone of the Bills fans was different. It wasn’t just fun banter back and forth. The tone was incredibly negative, hateful. And now that the team is exactly what everyone expected (everyone but Bills fans), the fans are turning on the team. Rex went from “exactly what this team needs” to “Rex is a clown who has to go”. Watkins has gone from “He is gonna be one of the best receivers in the league this season” to “He is a bust and they need to get rid of him”. Its really fascinating stuff. And it is exactly what the Bills fans deserve for their week 2 behavior, and subsequently disappearing for 3 weeks after

  23. When the coach thinks there’s nothing wrong with constantly running your mouth neither will the players.

The saddest thing about this is Watkins is just another person who doesn’t get that the internet is not anonymous, its not private, that with one click of a button when you’re upset you can ruin your future. Its that easy.

  24. What are diva wide receivers without a QB? (Robert De Niro as Al Capone in “The Untouchables” to Elliot Ness): “You’re nothing. Nothing!”

  25. “Of course, this one was on in the Internet.” At first I thought that was a direct quote from Mr. Watkins himself. Let’s be honest guys at this rate this guy will be out of the league by 2018 and trying to get one of our “little jobs.” Just be patient and watch the show.

  26. He just once some respect. He also, apparently, missed every English and/or grammar class at every level of school.

  27. tbh, hes right tho…i play semipro and put in a ton of work just to be “another guy” on the field with average production, average speed, average strength. the guys who dominate in semipro are talented af and put in MORE work than i, and these are guys who have literally no chance at the pros. so to imagine the combo of natural talent and hard work it takes to not only get into the nfl but to be a top pick, a starter, a playmaker its staggering. so average joes, like me and you….guys who do just enough to get by or even lowlifes living in mommas basement still hating on a pro athlete? get real, get a life, soend your time on making money or getting better at your craft than bashing someone on twitter. thats your claim to fame, thats what you want, for sammy watkins to talk back to you. sad.

  28. My one opinion on Rex is…

He has NEVER had the best QB on the field for any game he head coached..

Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick, Geno Smith, Ej Manuel, Tyrod Taylor…

The fact he has a 500 record is remarkable..

Give him a average qb and he would do well..

And I’m not a Rex fan..

  29. Still not as bad as getting caught in the 2 biggest cheating scandals that the NFL has ever faced.
    —–

The NFL isn’t facing anything. It is the NFL that is doing the accusing. They brought this damage on themselves.

  30. Considering dabo is running a football vocational school at Clemson this isn’t surprising

  31. One must be careful speaking against higher education in general based on the inability of many sports heroes to speak or write legibly. They are a separate class at their institutions, as are the programs in which the great majority matriculate. Many years ago, I was a teaching assistant at a certain big name university where the un-named head football coach was an expert on military history. Three of the starting players were in my A&P lab section, and were observed using a crib sheet during the lab midterm exam. I turned in the crib sheet along with their exams to the professor teaching the class. They were transferred to another lab section. End of story.

  32. I do feel bad for Watkins. He practiced his Touchdown and 1st Down all off-season and he’s hardly had a chance to showcase them! Lot of wasted time in front of a mirror.

    ……………………
No, not all of us were. Most of us were cautiously optimistic at best. Unfortunately, the few of us who weren’t, happened to take the blowhard approach. Don’t groups us in. We don’t deserve this collectively, and I for one never want this guy leading the charge for my favorite team, after watching him destroy a good core of a divisional rival. Sure, I tried justifying it to myself and rationalizing it over the off season- but what fan wouldn’t? It’s a tactic to keep oneself sane and optimistic. Reality has now set in though, and I and most of my fellow fans do not deserve it.
