Jim Caldwell claims “It certainly is possible” Lions will make the playoffs

Lions coach Jim Caldwell claims that his team, at 1-6, isn’t out of the playoff race.

Asked today in London if the Lions are really thinking about making it back to the playoffs, Caldwell insisted that they are.

“It certainly is possible,” Caldwell said. “It’s been done before.”

Technically, Caldwell is right. It is still possible in the sense that the Lions aren’t mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. And it has been done before -- once. In 1970, the Bengals started 1-6, then won their final seven games to finish 8-6 to win the AFC Central.

Realistically, Caldwell is kidding himself if he seriously thinks he’s coaching a playoff team. The Lions are more likely to finish with the first overall pick in the draft than to finish in the playoffs.
