NFL told Pats “a team” requested sweep for bugs

AP

The battle lines were drawn clearly on Friday. After Boomer Esiason said during Thursday night’s Westwood One broadcast of the Dolphins-Patriots game (and repeated on WFAN the next morning) that the Jets had asked the league to sweep its locker room at Gillette Stadium last Sunday for bugs, the league said that the Jets made no such request.

Asked Friday by reporters about the “alleged locker room sweep” on Sunday, Jets coach Todd Bowles said, “I know nothing about it.”

The sweep, which the league has not confirmed on the record, was attributed to a random process. As one source with knowledge of the league’s procedures tells PFT, the league conducts five or six such random electronic audits per year.

But a source with knowledge of the communications occurring during the sweep for bugs tells PFT that the league told Patriots personnel that the sweep was happening not as part of a random process but at the request of “a team.”

The NFL didn’t say which team; in theory, it could have been the Colts. But the Patriots interpreted the message to mean that it was the Jets.

Both Esiason and the Boston Herald report that the Jets did indeed request the sweep. While the Jets still have not commented on the matter, the fact that Jets security chief Robert Mastroddi instigated a misplaced interrogation of Kraft Sports employees who were present on the Patriots sideline while wearing Patriots gear and headsets speaks to a level of paranoia that would easily prompt the Jets to ask for a sweep of the locker room for bugs — especially in light of the Sports Illustrated report from last month that multiple teams have suspected bugging of their locker rooms in New England.

  1. Former Pats linebacker Ted Johnson told USA that an hour before game time, a list of the opposing team’s audibles — the signals a QB would use at the line of scrimmage just before a snap to change the play — would sometimes appear in his locker. He had no idea where the lists came from. Three years later, he said he was as surprised as anyone to hear about the cheating allegations.

  2. I flippin’ love this. For a while, I was pretty disgusted with all of this and the insecure fans who simply cannot acknowledge the fact that The Patriots are simply honest and superior to every other NFL team. I am now thoroughly enjoying every single post that infuriates the fans of the other 31 teams. The New England Patriots will be your Super Bowl Champions.

  3. It was definitely the Colts that asked to have the locker room swept…no doubt. In addition to having their locker room swept for “bugs”, they should’ve asked for a detective to check their owner’s box for pills…

  4. A “pathetic” team that would be better served focusing on football instead of conspiracy theories. It’s getting embarrassing for these whiner teams. If I was a fan of IND, BAL, NYJ, etc, I’d be ashamed and angry that my crappy team and coaching staff can’t beat a NE team that is starting cornerbacks and offensive linemen off the street. Get a life and stop whining you paranoid losers! Not even a Pats fan here, just speaking truth.

  5. Pats backup quarterback Doug Flutie once said he accidentally picked up Brady’s helmet during the 2005 season.
He was amazed that the coaches kept right on speaking to Brady past the 15-second cutoff, right up until the snap.

  6. Enough Mike. I’m a Pats fan, love that we are in the heads of the opponent. But, let’s talk football. Our defensive line and linebackers have been playing great, putting pressure on the QB,s and stopping the run. Enough of the BS. Thanks

  7. Its time for Kraft and company to start calling out every team, owner, and head coach that violates league policy. Time to call out the Colts for having needles on the sidelines. Time to call out Tomlin and the Steelers brass for eschewing proper channels with a complaint. Time to formally object to the Jets getting a a soft peddle punishment for personnel tampering. The fact is that a little bit of crap goes on everywhere but nobody has been able to build a substantive case that it happens any more in Foxborough than anywhere else. Kraft has played the role of company man and paid the fines and all that has done for him is add ammunition to the cowards who want to undermine his team. How much worse could it get if he decides to make a stink like the Irsay’s, Rooneys, Mara’s, Jones’, and Johnson’s of the world?

    —–

The Colts s—t the bed last week in front of their own fans. Why would they need the NFL to check Gillette?

  9. If a sweep was conducted and nothing was found wouldn’t someone have informed Bowles that it was ok to communicate freely in the locker room? This whole thing sounds very fishy.

  10. Really is getting pathetic. Just play the game. I think more fans are starting to dislike the Jets, Colts and Ravens for their non-stop crying and whining. Lose with some class and dignity.

  11. The NFL acts as if it is the East German police pre-unification. The act in secret. They lie directly or speak in half-truths. They have a political agenda. They try to intimidate. One of its main tasks is spying on its members and their employees, mainly through a vast network of its own NFL officials or team executives turned informants.

The Patriots are the resistance and are seen as a threat to a vanguard party of plutocrats and party bureaucrats because they have exploded the notion of parity. They call themselves democratic but they are totalitarian. Alas, they have coerced and usurped a private media to do their bidding and provide them cover.

    Well said.

I am going back to enjoying the game, and weekly matchups.

  15. Why am I not surprised that the whiny whinersons from the Jets are not manning up to their actions.

I guess it should come as no surprise since the NFL is run by spineless cowards.

I thought football was a game for men not little b-bottomed kids.

  16. So it doesn’t bother you Pat’s fans that a former Patriot says they cheated,Big Ben stated something always happens when they play in NE,Manning was suspicious of bugs,Spygate,Deflategate – Good to know all that matters to you is that they win, doesn’t matter how they do it !!! Pat’s and their fans deserve one another – Very sad !

What planet do you people live on?

Coaches and players analyze game film at every single level.

    Let me ask you something:

If a coach has analyzed game film and tells a cornerback on his team that if he sees the QB tap the side of his helmet it means the WR he is covering is running a slant, what should that cornerback do when he sees the QB make that signal? Lay down and let the WR catch the ball because otherwise it would be unfair?

Have any of you actually played football?

  18. It’s amazing how the league is simply dishonest or disorganized about absolutely everything. First, they said it was a random check. Then, we find out it wasn’t random and there was a bunch of other checks going on. Then, we find out that another “team” requested the bug check. So, which one is it? Is there anyone in the universe that would have believed that, out of all the games played this year, one of the six randomly chosen ones is a Pats-Jets game? Seriously? Perhaps they can leak out a press release in the coming days that will explain all of it…at least until something else contradictory gets leaked a little while later.

This whole year has been like a public seminar on bad leadership from the NFL offices.

Repeating urban myths as ‘fact’ now? Besides it’s so stupid. Ever wonder how Flutie could be listening to ‘Brady’s helmet’ if Brady was wearing it in the huddle?

  20. “Jets had asked the league to sweep its locker room” at Gillette Stadium.

So, the Jets asked their fellow employees at 345 Park Avenue to sweep their locker room at Gillette Stadium.

Get rid of the Jets employees in the league office, problem solved.

The facts are clear… 31 teams can do whatever they please with impunity, one team cannot.

  21. 7 weeks into the season. 2 investigations against the Super Bowl winners that turned up nothing; head coaches airing dirty laundry in press conferences (against the Super Bowl winners no less); head coaches and team websites calling out refs with impunity; the NFL hiring more and more lawyers to fight a ridiculous court case, filing briefs in which they say it’s strictly about the CBA – but spend the entire thing calling one of the faces of the NFL a liar and a cheat; Goodell saying he hasn’t decided whether to release the data they’re collecting about ball inflation; weekly confusion over rules; confidence in every single aspect of the NFL is being eroded.

And where’s Rodger while all of this is going on? Anyone know? That’s leadership, folks.

I have never know Flutie to be dishonest. He went on record saying it so I’m inclined to believe him.”

So what is the cheating accusation that comes from this? Flutie picked up Brady’s helmet, they still spoke as though Brady was wearing it, and? What’s the alleged cheating violation?

  24. Roger Goodell wanted parity, and managed to engineer a league with 4-5 elite teams and the rest mediocre to bad.

He hog-tied defenses to generate offense, and made it so that only teams with elite QBs have a shot at the Super Bowl.

He says he wants INTEGRITY, and engineered a league climate filled with rabid paranoia, unfounded accusations and messy court cases.

    Goodell’s gotta go.

  25. Patriot fans are annoyed by this but guess what?……you cheer for a team that cheats. And once you get caught again…….you probably will continue so don’t gripe about the punishment or how no other team or fan of another team respects you. Yes you win but Belichick is no Shula. Shula never had to cheat to win or hire film guys to wear NFL Films apparel.

  26. I’m surprised the NFL did not put out a statement saying they found some suspicious looking wires in the locker room walls.

Then realizing they were standard electrical wires to and from the outlets.

  27. I heard somewhere once that Tom Brady drinks a magic potion before games that gives him special power to make teams look stupid. The more potion he drinks, the more stupid the other team looks.

Butt fumble game, he drank a whole half liter. That Colts fiasco this year, he must have drank like a super big gulp cup.

Something that crazy has gotta be true!

  28. “Patriot fans are annoyed by this but guess what?……you cheer for a team that cheats. And once you get caught again…….you probably will continue so don’t gripe about the punishment or how no other team or fan of another team respects you. Yes you win but Belichick is no Shula. This guy has dedicated hours upon hours of his life to melting down like Chernobyl over the patriots

  29. I have never know Flutie to be dishonest. He went on record saying it

Funny, I ran a search and can’t find anything where Flutie said this.

Found a lot about people SAYING Flutie said it, but nothing from Flutie himself.

    How about that.

    Translation: WAHHHHHHHHHHH

  33. People who continue to accuse the Patriots of cheating should stop drinking the Kool-Aid and buying the hype. The Patriots are winning because they deserve to. Because they’re better than the teams they’re playing. Not because they’re cheating. Every team out there bends the rules, whether it’s taking illegal drugs, circumventing the salary cap, pumping in crowd noise, tripping, etc. And as Aaron Rodgers admitted, every QB out there screwed with ball inflation because it was always a gamesmanship issue. But apparently 31 teams can do whatever they want and cheat and practice gamesmanship but when the Patriots are involved, the NFL must take them down hard.

  34. Requested. Done. Nothing found. Not a big deal. Not sure why this is front page news unless they found something.

Duh? Nothing has been released at this point. If the NFL has something ….a big if…they will want to handle it better than the Shady Brady fiasco. Pat’s fans need to face the facts…..you are perceived as being cheaters….you will be checked…..because you have been caught ….deal with it …Cheaties.

  35. @chippy:

Or better yet…The snowplow game…When the parolee swept the snow for John Smith…Shula could have tied the game and was offered the same courtesy of the snow being brushed off of the field…He declined…Look it up!

  45. chippy, the next time you’re right it will be the first time. Your team won free agency again and we all know what that means–a disappointing season where expectations are not only not met, they lead to blowing up the team and starting over.

Do you think that maybe, just maybe, Shula’s living in the past is one of the reasons the Dolphins fan base doesn’t fully support its team? The Celtics legends, including Red Auerbach, when he was alive, and Tommy Heinsohn now, always talked up the current team. They didn’t and don’t live in the past.

Kraft, Belichick, and Brady will have legacies that outshine Shula’s because none of them are self centered bores.

  46. Cheaters gonna cheat. But since they just got caught, it’s smart of them to lay off the cheating. ****

  47. When I read the comments on stories like this one, all I can imagine is a bunch of you cats sitting in your mom’s basement with your tinfoil hats on squealing aloud ” IT’S A CONSPIRACY. THE PATRIOTS ARE CHEATERS!!” and snarling aloud “FIRE GOODELL!!”.

Maybe the NFL had an exterminator come through to sweep for crabs and other bugs?

The paranoia created by the Patriots being a good football team and well coached is driving a bunch of people insane. And I don’t even like the Patriots. But i would never rent space in my head for all the conspiracy theory or anything to do with who the owners employ to run the league HQ. Some of you need to find a new hobby. Deflategate has proven nothing, other than how inept the NFL handled the whole situation. Did any of you read and follow the whole story? I think not.. Last time we checked scouting one’s opponents is not cheating.

Big Ben is correct. Something usually does happen to the Steelers in the BB/Brady era when they play at New England – the Steelers get their butts kicked. That more often that not also happens when the Pats play the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

  55. My gut feeling would be that nobody requested it and that the NFL is on a witch hunt due to Brady and the Pats making monkeys of them in federal court.

I spent many years earning my living in a trade where pressure/temperature differential are constant parts to many equations and anybody in any one of several similar trades would tell you the entire thing was trumped up nonsense from the start.

  56. “Shula never had to cheat to win or hire film guys to wear NFL Films apparel.”

You do know the Fins tampered to get Shula and were docked a first round pick which was given to Baltimore for compensation don’t you?

By the Pats haters logic that tabts everything he did in Miami.

And I’ll go so far as to say since Shula was complicit in the tampering he knowingly cheated the team he was with so he could coach a different roster of players.

Shulacheat that’s what he should be called, right Pats haters?

How you line that little hustory lesdon?

  58. The only surprising thing is that we haven’t heard of more teams requesting these checkups.

It certainly was no coincidence that the Jets were so competitive in this game.

  59. I think it’s funny how fans of other teams spend so much time following the patriots. Thanks! Gotta warn you though, it’s expensive being a pats fan. I mean, buying all this super bowl championship gear year in and year out is crazy.

  60. Guessing not the Jets…they appear to actually spend their time preparing to compete – they are a pretty decent football team – not just preparing for blaming something/someone else when they fail. Has Chuck Strong written all over it. He’s going to be pretty good in the broadcast booth.

  61. New England Patriots, pure as the wind driven snow. Squeaky clean, like bleached whites.

Winners gonna win. Losers gonna whine, and lose their minds.

Professional trolls like jchipmunk and realitycheckcrybaby spend their waking hours trolling Pats stories rather than reading about and commenting on their own teams.

Subconsciously they want to be fans of the Patriots, the winners that destroy their pathetic little teams.

Pats fans embrace and grow strong from your hate. Please do keep it coming.

  62. @factman66 you might want to consider changing your name to gullibleman66. Are you seriously believing a rumour that would have Flutie, on the sideline, listening to the coaches trying to talk to Brady right up until the ball is snapped??? This would mean that Brady snapped the ball without his helmet on.

To believe a ridiculous rumour like that shows just how desperate and gullible you are.

    Thanks for making me laugh!

  63. Belichick also requested time to speak. As he told reporters earlier in the day, he accepted the punishment and thought that action showed no gray area in regard to the rules involving spying.

Apparently Belicheat didn’t get the “we’ve never cheated” memo.

  64. I had just spent all week saying how great a game that was last week against the Jets and that they are for real and that Todd Bowles has finally added some class to the team and the rivalry.

I guess I spoke to soon. I don’t blame Bowles for this because I really don’t think he knew about it and I think he really does want to take this team in a direction where you let your play do your talking. Unfortunately, the front office has made him look like a fool, and Jets are acting like a bunch of whiny babies AGAIN.

Nor is it Kansas City where the opponents’ malfunctioning headsets suddenly start working again whenever league officials approach the sideline to tell the other guys they have to stop using their sets, too.

Sorry, your own legacy and cheating reputation is the cause of things like this. Take some responsibility for your actions for a change instead of crying about witch hunts. In other words, man up, stop girl-ing down.

Every game for 60 minutes he continually berated and intimidated the officials…The one time it didn’t work for him was the infamous snow plow game..I like to think of it as the Famous snow plow game…Bring that up even today to shula and his head will explode..the thought of that makes me very happy!!

  74. Pats fans still looking for acceptance from their peers

Cue Price is Right Loser Horn 🙂

  75. The best part about these articles is reading the denials and delusions of Pats fans. Walsh, Flutie, Mangini, and Ted Johnson all former Patriots employees have blown the whistle. Then we have the Sports Illustrated and ESPN investigative reports on the Patriots cheating. Then there are the lost draft picks and fines. And, lastly, the fact that their team has been called out by current and former NFL coaches, GMs, and players. Pats nation has officially run out of excuses for their team’s habitual cheating.

This is what the Pats have turned the nfl into these days. Plus, if they ever find any bugs, they’ll just say nfl planted them and there’s a conspiracy by nfl (thee old hilarious rationale) to take down the pats.
Just let them cheat. There have multiple methods to cheat and if nfl catches them again, the other method is in place, and on and on. So quit wasting time catching everything illegal that they do and do what i do, just consider this team a fraud and at least watch the honest teams play. (Pat fans, your Que for the “all teams cheat” rationale)

    ——————————————–

More disinformation spread by Cheater Nation. Care to point us to a source where Flutie makes the denial? Meanwhile I can point you to published newspaper articles that mention Flutie saying he DID pick up the helmet.

And all that was said was that Flutie picked up the helmet by accident, not that he ever wore it. So it doesn’t matter whether it was numbered or not, that’s besides the point.

And I guess next you’ll claim the Ted Johnson article mentioning how he got that mysterious list of opposing teams’ audible before games never existed, either?

  84. Pats reaped what they sow, so now they’re all hubris’ in persecution crying

    Waaaaaaaa

  85. Chuckhotspads…..shall we bring up tuck rule? Shall we bring up browns game last year? Shall we bring up how the pats have played the least amount of teams coming off a bye week since Goodell became commish? Shall we bring up how Kraft is 1 of 3 people in charge of Goodells salary? Didn’t think so……peep down..

  86. Rams1999

Your point is one that could probably have the team banned for unfair acts clauses in Operations Manual.

That would be bigger than 1919 white sox

Bring that on, the league might be able to get in to some real on level football and not this alternate reality world Kraft BB and Ernie Adams have concocted since 2000.

If suddenly Fantasy Football was outlawed and gambling on NFL as well, the whole fricken thing is DONE

  87. Is it me, or are some people being a little crazed about this?

Try to make an inference here. “Picking up” refers to the signal to the quarterback’s helmet. Brady is a quarterback. Flutie was a quarterback. They both wear helmets that pick up the signal. The alleged story is that Flutie says he heard the signal up to the snap. I imagine all back ups wearing their helmets can.

Now how this is true when the NFL cuts the signal is another matter. The story perpetuated here doesn’t deal with that fact. It’s another allegation without proof, which is the fabric from which most Internet posts are woven.

  88. @patstipoftheiceberg you want to believe that Flutie was listening to an alternate green dot helmet. This is more desperation. A quarterback’s alternate communication helmet is not sitting on the sideline. Read the rules and enlighten yourself. This whole rumour was debunked years ago. No wonder Flutie does not respond.

  89. Could the team that made the request been the patriots? They asked the league to certify the room. It would be something if the league couldn’t just be forthright about this though.

Shula never had to cheat to win or hire film guys to wear NFL Films apparel.

lol chippy. Dude practically invented cheating in the SB era. Shula never cheated???

The same Don Shula that negotiated and signed a contract to become head coach of the Dolphins while he was still the active coach of the Colts, forcing the Fins to surrender their 1st round pick as punishment? That Don Shula never cheated?

Or maybe you mean the Don Shula named in a law suit by former players this past year that specifically names Shula as one of a number of coaches who warned that players “would be cut from their teams unless they took un-prescribed painkillers and returned to the field.” That Don Shula?

Or the Don Shula who before the 1983 AFC Championship game between Miami and the Jets, ordered the cover off the field during a monsoon in order to create a muddy field to slow down the Jets’ high powered offense and ensure the Dolphins with a slower team but superior running game a 14-0 win in the infamous “Mud Bowl”? That Don Shula never cheated.

  93. Just go to yourteamcheats.com to get the lowdown on the past records of how each team has cheated. You’ll see the Patriots are no where near the top of the list….the Jets,…hmm, now isn’t that interesting?

Yes, I hope we’ve all noticed by now that this NFL office is not really honesty-driven. We’ve seen in many cases that they are willing to lie if they think it’s in their personal best interest. And they’ve got the sports media in a position where they are unwilling to criticize. (This is, of course, symptomatic of how are media are in general, but I digress.)

If the NFL thinks it will make them look bad that they swept for bugs at the behest of the Jets, they will immediately deny that they did so. If some enterprising reporter eventually digs up the truth, the NFL doesn’t care, because they know that story won’t ever get 1/10th as much coverage as their initial denial.

  101. The fascinating aspect of this story is that the Patriots have asked the NFL to sweep the visitors locker room before every home game, and the NFL has refused to do so. The NFL is practically begging for a visiting team to plant evidence.

It was just a rumour with no substance. There was no interview, no one is on record as saying that Flutie said this to them. It’s been repeated over and over until people like you think it true. You can’t find any written or audio evidence that directly points to Flutie saying this. You can’t find anybody that says that Flutie directly told him that. It’s just a rumour that somebody started. He doesn’t say Shula ordered they tamper. No reasonable person would come away with that thought based on what he wrote. He said Shula negotiated with and signed a contract with the Dolphins while he was under a contract with the Colts. Which he did do.

He also wrote how changing the field conditions was beneficial for the Dolphins based on their running game and the Jets passing game. The muddy field slowed down the Jets and aided the run oriented Dolphins. It was also illegal to keep the field uncovered. League rules stated it had to be covered. So, that goes beyond gamesmanship as you imply to cheating.

Not for nothing but anyone who watches the game or listens to the radio and scrutinizes the audio from a quarterback at the line could figure that out.

Things weren’t going as planned so they stopped. He had no clue at that point his greed would cost him the draft pick, he had no intention of getting caught. Maybe he should have realized there was a date on that contract.

It has to be true. I heard a rumour that Doug Flutie told John Saunders that they are all the same person (living in his mom’s basement). Fact! We are just waiting for Flutie to confirm. Come on Doug! Step up!

  130. I love the comments section of these articles. The time and dedication some of you people put into trying to explain away New England’s success is truly hilarious.

If you seriously think either Spygate or the farce formerly known as Deflategate tarnishes any of their Super Bowl wins, you need to get some therapy, work out your daddy issues, and maybe your sense of self-worth won’t derive from the outcome of a football game.

  131. How much more money does kraft need. If I owned a team that was getting slandered, I’d be looking at a defamation lawsuit. He needs to stop being a company guy and go AL Davis on the nfl. All of these Goodell miscues are going to make the next collective bargaining agreement very contentious.

  132. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

What would you do if someone in your family were accused and deemed guilty based on “ASSUMPTIONS AND DATA THAT IS UNCERTAIN” (Wells Report)? Could you accept that???

    FACTS:
    1. Colts had deflated footballs – page 8 Wells report.

    2. Brady requested that all persons be placed under oath and the NFL tried to seal this fact (transcripts). Thus under oath, the NFL admitted that they DID NOT know anything about the Ideal Gas Law (IGL).

    3. Patriot’s record last 24 games: Won 22 .. Lost 2.

    4. Since the end of the first half of FrameGate: Brady 26 Touchdowns, 3 Interceptions.

    5. Fumbles since FrameGate: research it, non-Patriots’ fans will be disappointed.

Would you accept a guilty designation based on “ASSUMPTIONS AND DATA THAT IS UNCERTAIN.” We can understand your frustrations. However, this is AMERICA and King Roger IS NOT bigger than our great Country! The Missouri Supreme Court, in a separate case, stated in May, 2015: ….“the terms of the contract designating the NFL commissioner, an employee of the team owners, as the sole arbitrator with unfettered discretion to establish the rules for arbitration are unconscionable and, therefore, unenforceable”.

In the future, a best-selling movie will FOREVER PRESERVE the disgraceful actions of the current NFL office.

  133. I commend the Jets for requesting a sweep…too much goes on with the Pats that their low-integrity fans just overlook…heck, they even delight in the cheating…
IMHO, If you have any business with this team, it’s players, coaches or owner, make sure you wear a clothespin so you can not smell the stench that their lack of ethics and integrity creates…
