Bengals come back, beat Steelers, stay undefeated

AP

For much of the day, the Bengals quarterback looked like playoff Andy Dalton.

But at the end, it was the Pittsburgh quarterback who looked like coming-off-an-injury Ben Roethlisberger.

The Bengals rallied for a 16-10 win at Pittsburgh, moving them to 7-0 and helping to salve a rough day for an offense that had known no problems this year.

Midway through the fourth quarter, it appeared the Steelers had this one in their control.

Steelers cornerback Antwon Blake intercepted Dalton in the end zone, and it was just the third interception of the season for the Bengals quarterback. But it killed a potential scoring drive, as close as the Bengals had come to the end zone to that point.

When Steelers safety Mike Mitchell gave Dalton his fourth pick of the year moments later, it seemed to put a bow on this one for Pittsburgh.

The Bengals hadn’t been held under 24 points all season, but the Steelers kept the clamps on them all day.

Cincinnati didn’t convert a third-down until the third quarter, but the Bengals also made enough mistakes to undo their best efforts. Emblematic was a penalty that backed a field goal attempt back 5 yards in the third quarter, and was promptly blocked.

But that’s when Roethlisberger came back in, throwing a bizarre interception which he should have chunked into the stands, allowing the Bengals life they had not had prior to that point. It was one of three picks on the day for Roethlisberger, who was 28-of-45 passing for 262 yards and a touchdown.

That last one set up Dalton’s touchdown to A.J. Green, a flash of life for a team which has rolled up yards and points all year.

The Steelers had a late chance, but Roethlisberger’s final-second pass was disastrously out of bounds, after he had moved them into position.

In addition to being 4-4, the Steelers are also going to have to make do after another apparently serious injury.

Running back Le’Veon Bell was taken from the stadium to be evaluated after a first-half knee injury, which will put more pressure on Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense. The quarterback found his old connection with Antonio Brown and Heath Miller (10 catches for 105 yards) again, but things will get more complicated if Bell is out for an extended amount of time.

  1. Just came back from a local restaurant, with lots of steeler fans there, and only 2-3 Bengal fans. We heard lots of crap mist of the game, but they all left in angry silence. Funny, they couldn’t even slow their mass exit to congratulate us on our 7-0 record.

  2. I thought when Dalton threw that INT in the red zone late in the game that it was the same old choking Andy Dalton but Big Ben out-choked him. To Dalton’s credit, he led the offense to the go-ahead score. That should do a lot for his confidence. I think some still want to see him play well in a playoff game before he gets that monkey off his back, deservedly so.

  3. Bell injury was huge in this game and could really hurt Pitt down the road, hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks

  4. Ooooh. That’s gotta hurt, Steeler fan!

I think Pittsburgh still makes the post season, but this year appears to belong to Cincy.

  5. Gutless call on the waived off PI call. Officials reversal basically changed the outcome of the game right there.

    Continues season of horrible officiating.

  6. Those crickets you hear are Pittsburgh fans still processing what they just seen. I’ll do the math real quick for you.

    Bengals 7-0
    Steelers 4-4 3.5 GB

    ——————

So I assume you’re talking about the waived off call on aj green when they called it off because green was out of bounds even though it was the pi that pushed him out of bounds

  8. When you sell your moral soul by signing Vick, this is the stuff you get.

Steelers getting every ounce of what they deserve. I’m a fan and am rooting every week for their total destruction.

Hope the wheels come off completely now that Bell is out. Once they get rid of Vick, you’ll be surprised how things will start to magically turn around.

  9. How many SuperBowl trophies are kept in the Bengals home office?

The Ginger Ninja will keep the streak alive just like Boomer, except Dalton will never sniff a SB.

  10. Well the refs once again tried their best to give pittsburgh the game. That PI flag in the endzone doesn’t get picked up against any other team in the league. The rooneys must have some good dirt on blandino.

  11. Judging by the comments, Bengal fans just won their Super Bowl.

    **********************************************

I’m serious. This game went to the team that wanted to lose it less. I think we’ll be seeing the Bengal collapse pretty soon. Nothing to play for, they’ll lose their focus and turn back into the Bungles.

  12. Bengals had no business winning that game, considering how badly the o line played. Also, sucks that Bell went out. Looked painful, but wasn’t a dirty hit. Still pinching myself that they remain undefeated. WHO DEY

Whine much? Yeah, and the non-call in the end zone against Green because he was out of bounds evened it out. He was only out of bounds because he was PUSHED there. A Bengals TD (after what would have been a 1st and goal on the 1) would have eliminated the end zone INT. That was as much of a game changer. Too much for Stoolers’ fans to admit the better team won – easier to focus on a bad call to lay the blame.

  14. The Bengals finally beat a not very good Steeler team. Good win and the refs were as bad as the Steelers.

  15. Fortunately the Pittsburgh fans didn’t see the loss. Most of the seats were empty long before the final drive. I guess no one can look at those ugly uniforms without up-chucking. LOL.

  16. Hey Bengals fans, I trash-talked you all week, but you pulled it out. If the Steelers can’t win the big one this year, I hope you guys do. Congrats on a tough win. We’ll see you next time.

No it wasn’t the same old Dalton today.

He only made one mistake today; in years gone by he makes 4…….

  18. Hey Pittsburgh fans – you gonna keep up the “but the Bengals haven’t beaten anyone yet”? One could say they still haven’t…

  19. Who dey? The Bungles will choke the first playoff game. That’s who dey. Chokers. How many Lombardis do you have? None. Cause ur teh Bungles. That will NEVER CHANGE.

  21. Same old Andy Dalton in big games, Bengals defense looked stout.

    =========

Except he threw the game-winning TD

  22. 10 points in a home game. Can we all just admit that Big Bum sucks? Seriously? Can we all just admit that Landry Jones would have done better?

In any given season Small Ben in Big games will have 4 great games scoring over 30 points, 4 average games, scoring around 20, and 8 games where he absolutely poops the bed and gets 15 points or less.

Last season he cratered with 15 points in a home playoff game. No playoff wins on the horizon as long as Small Ben in Big Games and Honest Mike “Twelfth Man” Tomlin are with the team.

This year will be their 5th season in a row with ZERO playoffs wins. And the Rooneys just rewarded them this past off season for 4 years in a row without a playoff win with contract extensions. What am I missing?

Am I taking crazy pills here? Why can nobody see that Big Ben just absolutely sucks? How many poop the bed 10 point performances does it take?

A turnover machine? 4 INTs in 7 games ain’t too shabby.

  25. @ 4- 4, Steelers need to go 6-2 to get to 10-6 to have a chance at a wildcard. Long road.

If Steelers go 8-0 for a 12-4 record, Bengals only need to go 5-4 in last 9 games.

  26. All those speedy receivers and the big bad Steelers put up 10 points?

I assumed this would shut the rabid Steeler apologists up, but then I see some guy complaining about a PI call as if that was the difference in the game.

I do feel bad about Bell though. Good college back, but made of glass and just not durable enough for the pro game.

If you don’t celebrate the fact your team just won a close game while gaining even more ground on their division and staying undefeated then you’re a poor fan.

  28. For every Steelers fan that keeps bashing Andy Dalton you better watch the game again. Yes he had a rough game but he came up big when it mattered the most. The td to AJ with under 3 minutes to go was big. The old Andy would have given up after throwing the two interceptions but not this Andy. He has improved so much and you can tell his confidence and maturity has grown tremendously. You guys need to look at your own qb who looked horrible. He cost you the game with his three interceptions but I am waiting to hear the excuses such as Big Ben was not 100 percent and you lost Bell. Injuries happen and it is how you respond that matters. We lost our best run stopping lb and never gave up and fought hard and won the game which a real team does. Also before we hear it again, the hit on Bell was clean and there is no excuse that you can come up with saying different. I am also hearing how bad the refs were. If I’m not mistaken it was the refs that cost several first downs for the Bengals so yes the refs were not great but they did not cost the Steelers. Face it you were outplayed by a better team in the Bengals and they have the potential to sweep the division and will be fighting for a first round bye. For the Bengals fans did you guys notice after Ben threw his interception to Shawn Williams in the fourth, he started limping and acting like he was hurt again. He is easily the biggest drama queen in the NFL. It is great to be dominating the division like the we are this year. This team as long as they play like they have all season and stay healthy will continue to win and fight for one of the first round byes in the playoffs. As the Steelers are concerned they will be lucky to recover and make the playoffs. Who Dey

  29. Bengals have been a joke my whole life and will continue to be so. Sad thing is this is the biggest win they’ve had in the last 20 years and it was more about the steelers giving it to them and the refs having money on the bengals obviously.

  31. 1. Pitt’s throwback uni’s are slick. 2. Bengals are showing something. 3. Pitt’s season is in serious trouble because of injuries and young defensive secondary. 4. Bengals will not top Patriots because of many things, most of all the coaching match up. 5. Still expecting a Bengal collapse before playoffs.

  32. What’s the over under on Dalton interceptions if the Bengals ever play the Patriots 6?

    Really, nobody cares.

  33. When Steeler fans start talking about their rings this early in the season, you know they are worried.

  36. Guess the Stillers are going to need to wait another year to get one for the other middle finger. Favorite day of the year. When the yinzers realize that football is over and there is nothing to look forward to except another harsh, bitter winter.

  37. Looked like the old Bungles to me. Dalton is such a choker and will never get that team to the ‘big game’. When things go south the whole team plays like a bunch of high school brats. Too many personal fouls and foolish stuff. A lot of talent on the team for sure but have a long way to go in the maturity department. The Steeler’s certainly have Dalton’s number. Had Ben been on top of his game it wouldn’t have even been a game as good as the ‘D’ was playing. Oh well, such is life. What the hell do you know about being made of glass….your idea of an injury is a ingrown toe nail? It’s ok to talk about fans that are unhappy about a loss but calling a player soft when you shy away from bumper cars at the amusement park is just plain dumb.

  39. Everyone hating on Dalton needs to redirect their smack talk to the o line and Hue Jackson for some terrible playcalling. J. Hill was averaging 8 yards a carry before they abandoned him in the first half. THREE runs in the first half? Really?

I could have gotten pressure against our O line today. They better get that crap cleaned up fast.

Also, for $70 million, AJ better make that catch on the deep ball. Yeah, he was interfered with, but you know the refs aren’t going to take a pick away from the Stillers. Make the play.

Hey Bill, why talk about a game with trolls who say the Bungals destroyed the Steelers, or karma this or karma that. When I see people posting dumb crap I call them on it. If your feelings are hurt don’t post high school comments or make unsupported statements you feel are facts.
The Bungals have a very talented team and won by making more plays today….but they hardly destroyed anyone. They won a game they would usually lose to the Steelers, but most definetly lose to anyone in Jan. Enjoy the win…..just think about how tough it will be to eat crow when you lose AGAIN in Jan….cheers.

  45. OK bungals fans, your team is on the upswing, allegedly. And no, Pats fans are far from worried. Get real.

  46. You know i rarely criticise the steelers but they deserved to lose this game. The bungles did nothing to win it but Big Ben did everything to give the game to them.although. Big ben is better then that and I can definitely beat the bungles if they match up in the playoffs.

  47. Did Eifert even play? All I heard all week was how “unstoppable” he was. I can’t recall even one play he made that mattered.

Dalton is still the same big-game choker’s he’s always been, only this time he had the benefit of playing Roethlisberger who is well documented for stinking it up for the first game he comes back from injury.

I have to laugh at all the kitty fans who bragged up all the “weapons” they have. Where were they? The biggest play you made was once again cheap-shotting Bell’s leg and getting him out of the game. That changed the outcome from certain loss to uncertain win. Congrats.

You’re a fraud Bungals. Same old fraud. You’ll lose your first playoff game as usual. The Steelers will outdo you even if they have to do it from the wildcard position. Bank it.

  48. As much as I’d like to rub it in this was an awful game to watch and I take little satisfaction from it. While the win was nice, we had a chance to send a message to our hated rivals to tell them not to think about playing with us and what do the bengals do? Lay down and play down to the bully that has beaten them pretty much the entire exists de of the franchise. It took a one legged Ben, knocking out Leveon bell and some serious luck and several mishaps to finally do it.while the win is nice, it showed me that superior coached teams will beat us when the chips are down. Pitt has a few nice offensive players and some grit, that is it. We have superior talent at almost every position except qb, rb and a push at wr. This game should have been won by 17 points today. It’s almost as if the offense did everything they could do to lose the game for each team.

  49. Let’s all act like we’ve been there before. Pitt played decent – their D was rock solid all day. Andy made mistakes at horribly crucial moments, but he also attuned for those mistakes (which has never happened in the past). Big Ben isn’t 100% and Bell going out was a huge blow. Hats off Pitt, ’twas an awesome game to watch.

In years past, this is a game Cincy would’ve folded in the 3rd, rolled over, and gotten smashed. They didn’t, played great defense, and stole it. A.J. wasn’t going to be stopped. Andy didn’t wilt under pressure. He wasn’t perfect, but he didn’t need to be.

Hell yes Who Deys, that’s how you close out a game!!! This ain’t the same ol Bengals, boys and girls. We bout to bring the noise.

The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game in 5 years, and I don’t see that changing this year. Of course to win one, you actually have to make the playoffs, and right now even that NoFoolNoDrool guy knows that is a tremendous longshot.

  53. A couple points…

    1) Bengals are never good after a bye. They always start flat. I am surprised they won.

    2) What happened to the running game? It wasn’t tried enough to give up because the Steelers stopped it.

    3) Andy or Hue seemed intent on getting the ball to AJ Green no matter what with loss of receptions to the other receivers. I am surprised Andy didn’t throw more picks.

Most unbalanced game plan of the year. Too much time between games, I guess.

Actually, the AFC has a bunch of good teams (division leaders) and a bunch of really bad teams. Right now, the wild card is still wide open for the Steelers to make the playoff if they start playing better than 500 the rest of the season.

The Steeler’s competition for Wild card are the Jets (seemingly dropping at the moment), Raiders (better than expected) , and the rapidly improving Chiefs.

I am a Bengals fan… just being realistic. This loss does not put Pittsburgh out of the Wild Card chase.

  57. Someone should really teach Rusty the definition of destroyed. Well I can while I am at it.

    Destroyed: defeat (someone) utterly

Dalton 231 yards 1 TD, 2 INT is not destroying someone utterly. Bengals won mostly because of Ben’s back to back interceptions, something Dalton had nothing to do with, and party due to drops and penalties.

  59. Superstar Andy Dalton and his arsenal of explosive offensive weapons put up all of two field goals going into the 4th quarter today.

  63. You act like they should perform exactly the same, every week, regardless of opponent. Good teams have bad games. We played bad today…and won, on the road, to a full strength Steelers team.

Just say good game and move on. Bengals win. Let that sink in.

  64. While I don’t think the Steelers are dead yet, they are about as close as they can get to it. In my opinion the season comes down next week. The Raiders are a very good team this year, and it’s going to be another though game. If the Steelers lose next week, then they will be two games behind the Raiders with the Raiders having the head to head advantage. The Steelers really need to take 2 of their next 3 if they want to get to the playoffs. They also need to take care of business against the Colts, Browns, and and Ravens. They also need to take at least 2 game where they’re not supposed to win. Like games against Cincinnati, Denver, or Seattle. The only reason why the Steelers might make the playoffs is because the AFC is very bad, so they might get in by default. The Jets might have lost their two starting quaterbacks, and the only other decent team right now is the Raiders. This has been the most frustrating year ever. The defense has played surprisingly well except for the games against the Patriots and Chiefs, but the offense just can’t stay healthy. It would’ve been cool to see how scary the Steelers were going to be with a healthy offense, and a resurgent defense. Losing Bell for the year is definitely going to hurt. And for the Steelers to only have 1 win in the AFC and 0 wins in the division in mind boggling. Ben needs to be a lot better then he was today.

  65. At the end there was also no one left in the stands. Tons of empty seats with the game far from decided.

When a RB injures the same knee two years in a row he’s injury prone. Sorry, but that’s a fact. Nothing to do with toughness – some guys are just not built for the NFL. Maybe he’ll be able to come back next year – we’ll just have to see how he responds to the surgery and rehab.

Bengals won because they were the better, tougher team and the Steelers couldn’t do squat against their D after the first quarter.

Accept it, ice up, move on and focus on the Raiders – if you also lose to them at home next week as I expect you can kiss off this season and make it 6 years in a row without a playoff win.
