Browns are having a fire sale, Barkevious Mingo also on the block

Oh, my God, the Browns are having a fire sale.

We already noted that the Browns’ two best offensive linemen, left tackle Joe Thomas and center Alex Mack, are both on the trade block, as is linebacker Paul Kruger. Now Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Barkevious Mingo is on the block as well, and the Browns have told teams that Mingo is available.

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Mingo is a talented pass rusher who hasn’t always looked like a great fit for what the Browns want to do on defense. Cleveland took him with the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft, and he has just seven career sacks — none this year.

The Browns surely won’t be able to get anything close to the Top 10 pick they spent on Mingo, but if they could get anything of value in a trade, they’d probably be willing to let Mingo go. This is a team building for the future, not trying to win in 2015.

  1. Ozzie should pounce on Thomas, Haden, or Mingo. All would be upgrades. Monroe isnt playing up to his contract, Smith and Webb have been inconsistent to say the least, and Mingo would help immediately in the pass rush department.

  2. Mingo no go. Mingo stay with Sheriff Bart. Sheriff Bart first man never whip Mingo. Mingo impressed. Have deep feelings for Sheriff Bart.

  3. Sure hope any future picks they acquire won’t be made by Farmer/Haslam, Browns fans deserve better

  4. So the Browns are having a fire . They’re building for the future. Still starting their 36 year old career backup QB though. Okay

  5. It looks like Cleveland is trying to recoup future picks that they have blown recently. Farmer is a goner after the season for sure. I agree that Haden should be on the trade block. He is a pretty good, if not slightly over-rated player who should get Cleveland a day one pick.

  6. “Joe Thomas deserves better.”

    Funny thing, the Pats are really thin on the Oline right now due to injury, especially at tackle.

  7. The best way to rebuild is to get two picks in the first round. The worst way to rebuild is to use those picks on Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert (who is such a bust that I had to Google his first name just now).

  8. I hope they trade our entitled no class to small little weasel of a backup QB .

    If they send the little fella packing and the circus that follows him it would be a good start .

    No, I don’t. I respect your loyalty, but I wouldn’t trade places with you for anything.

  10. Wish they’d get rid of all of them and blow the whole thing up. That includes Joe Thomas, who’s genius agent has recently reminded the fanbase that his client isn’t hurt, just not really interested in playing all that well.

    Trade EVERYONE for draft picks and throw in the towel on 2015. Get a GM in here that actually knows what he’s doing and rebuild beginning with the 2016 draft. Enough is enough.

    The Vikings could really use Mack about right now with Sullivan out the season
    ——
    Then what? Sullivan will be back next year. Can one of them play guard? No sense in just renting a guy for 8 games.

  12. “The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Mingo is a talented pass rusher who hasn’t always looked like a great fit for what the Browns want to do on defense.”

    Oh… OK!

    Say, is there anyone out there who knows exactly what the hell it is the Browns are trying to do on defense?

  13. After hearing this news, I bet the team will really play hard the rest of the year – yeah right !!!

  14. Joe Thomas screams Giants/Pats/Steelers type guy. seems to keep his nose clean, plays hard, and does his job. all conveniently all 3 teams could use a stalwart LT (and when it comes to one of Thomas’ caliber, who couldn’t?). wouldn’t be surprised to see him in one of those uniforms come Tuesday.

  15. Trading Joe Thomas to the Patriots would actually lead to me to cheer for the Pats… Ok maybe not cheer for them but at least feel less bad if they were to win another SuperBowl.

  16. When rebuilding for the future, don’t you want good O-linemen to protect your QB? Are you just going to draft more O-linemen in the draft to replace them?

    And this is why the Browns will never be good under Haslem.

    Let’s draft a way a pro bowl LT so that we can get our new QB of the future killed. Smart strategy.

  17. Mike Pettine talking about Tom Brady back in May: “I’ve always had a lot of respect for him . . . But I lose a lot of respect for guys who cheat.”

    Karma is a bitch.

    Another buffoon indoctrinated under the Jets organization. We are seeing first hand that Mike Pettine not only is not a very good coach, he’s not a very good judge of character.

  18. The Vikings need offensive linemen and you can just throw Mingo into the deal and we can try and see what Zimmer can salvage from him

     ——————

    Good idea. The vikings have a great history of trading away draft picks and things turning out in their favor. See Herschel Walker

  19. And they wonder why they never win !!! The fans deserve better, and the league needs to screen new owners better. They had over 50 mil in cap money and haven’t improved one bit !!

    Joe Thomas, Bill Belichick on line 1…
    ______________

    NE can’t really absorb Thomas’ cap hit.
    Everyone keeps thinking contender for the Brown’s o-lineman and other trades but from a need/cap space standpoint J’ville should be looking hard at some of the options that may be out there particularly at center…hello Alex Mack

  21. Browns tanking? They are a terrible team. They are losing naturally.

    The media writes about the backup QB to the point of it being a sickness. They didn’t care about the GM texting, the GM’s PHd friend, telling coaches who to play, etc. OR the most important aspect, the players lousy performance on the field. I’m sure Kyle is happy he’s out of there.

    Get rid of the overrated players making alot of money. Haden gets beat so much, he doesn’t want to play anymore. Thomas stands around disinterested. Maybe playing for Cleveland, losing so much, and being around so much dysfunction has broken their spirit.

  22. How can the Browns possibly build for the future when they’ve blown literally every draft pick they’ve made in the last decade? What’s the point of trading players to get even MORE draft picks which they’ll waste on more failures?

  23. The Curse of Bill Belichick is as bad as the Curse of the Bambino. Look at what has happened to both the Browns and Jets since he left those organizations and one fired him and the other trashed him, saying he was mentally unstable. Can you imagine calling Belichick mentally unstable? It’s like calling Stephen Hawking dumb. At least the Red Sox won after trading the Babe, just not the big game. Belichick left the Giants and Patriots (before returning to them) and both organizations only had good things to say about him.

    He has a no trade to a cheater clause so the leaves the Pat’s in the cold.

  25. “if farmer trades thomas to a our heated division rival im done. Trade him sure. But that is palin stupid.”

    Couldn’t agree with you more but I have one question. Did you just spell “plain” wrong as “palin”, or were you referencing the latter as Sarah Palin stupid. If you were, that’s pretty funny stuff.

  27. being a browns fan is tough, but we’re just meandering around being a bad team year after year but not quite bad enough to get the 1st overall pick and a shot at a franchise QB

    seems like a play to get the #1 pick

    i dont trust farmer to make the right selection though, this time i’m actually hoping haslam blows it up again

    Funny Haha. A cheater joke. Something original. Joe Thomas would run to New England foregoing a plane ride. Joe Thomas to NE is the 31 conspiring teams worst nightmare. And you know what? I bet it happens.

  29. If this is true, then why get rid of your best players? I wonder if the owner is cashing out and selling the team next year.

  30. This is a team building for the future, not trying to win in 2015.

    —–

    Hasn’t that been the case forever now? Maybe if they stop making bad picks like this, they’ll stop “building for the future.” Time to start all over again and blow the coaching staff and GM up, again. I’m sure it’ll work this time. I promise, Brown fans. Finally, it’ll work after they get rid of Joe Thomas and Alex Mack, lol.

  31. I could see Baltimore jumping on this, although they really need a receiver or two.

    New England might do a one year deal with someone but they are very tight with the cash, so it won’t be longer than that. Our owner has a reputation for being tight, but the Patriots are even tighter.

  32. Funny Haha. A cheater joke. Something original. Joe Thomas would run to New England foregoing a plane ride. Joe Thomas to NE is the 31 conspiring teams worst nightmare. And you know what? I bet it happens.

    I think you underestimate the integrity of Mr Thomas…. Money drives him…cheating doesn’t …big difference. As a Pat’s fan doesn’t it get old hearing cheating jokes? …then just stop cheating simple enough.

  33. This is a scary concept for Browns fans, lose some decent players (or less decent players) in order to get more draft picks to rebuild the team. We’ve been there and done that, over and over and over again (add more overs as appropriate). But the scary part is the total lack of any hint that someone on the Browns has a clue of who to draft. Until they figure that part out I have to believe that they would just be giving Joe Thomas away for free. That said, Joe has been a lonely bright spot over the past nearly ten years and he deserves the chance to play for an organization that isn’t inept. Maybe send him home to Wisconsin to play for the Packers.

  34. I’m a Pats fan, have been to Cleveland for a game and you folks are actually ok. Had a great time in the stands with my Brady jersey on, good natured joking all around. I hope at some point you get your team turned around. It sucked rooting for the Pats when they were losing every season, although I never stopped. Your time will come Cleveland.

  35. By the way, I have been to games in Denver and had beer dumped on me and nacho’s thrown at my wife. Different fan base all together. Kind of sucked listening to threats for 3 hours.

  36. From NFL fans around the world to Cleveland Browns fans: We send our condolences!!!!!!

    Cleveland’s management needs to be put in front of a firing squad………….stat!

    While I will grant that the colts as an organization are experts on tanking (having despicably done it twice) I just can’t credit that colts fans themselves know much and neither does their ownership. If they did there wouldn’t be any participation banners hanging up there, what knowledgeable fan base would accept that?

  38. This is a team building for the future, not trying to win in 2015.

    “Somewhere an old lady just got ran over by Jerry Reece rushing to get to a phone…”
    ~~~~
    Unfortunately Brown was mowed over a second later by a screaming George Costanza, who only heard the ‘fire’ and not the sale part.
  40. Fans of the Denver Broncos have already started a GoFundMe page and have collected $2.2 million dollars to help lure Joe Thomas.
    The Browns front office has agreed to accept a 4th round draft pick, 6 used kicking tees and case of brand new jock straps in exchange.
  41. The Browns are building ??? Really!!! Thats all they have been doing so when is this building suppose to be finished and Cleveland gets the winning team that we deserve!!!! I love my Brownies and will continue to love and support them because I am no fair weather fan and I know the day when we finally do win is gonna be the best day ever so I hold on but come on now give us a bone here !!
  42. So I don’t get this. Mingo had 7 career sacks and he his a bad fit but Maybin had like 6 and he sucked? Don’t get me wrong, he did suck but how does one justify but another doesn’t
  43. We need an experienced coach is what we need! One that has been there and knows what he is doing? But no we keep making head coaches ourselves instead of getting ones who have proved they can do it! Have him fill in the coaching staff and there ya go!! What I wouldnt give for Cowher to come coach for us!! I would even take Marty Shottenheimer if I could!!
  44. Oh man! If only the Pats had the cap space for Thomas. What a fit that would be. Especially right now.
  45. For all those knuckle heads clamoring for a Thomas trade, did you ever stop to think what the Browns are asking for in return? You better believe it will a high draft pick and players so its not like your team doesn’t have to subtract to add Thomas on. And the Vikings are famous for quick fixes which in some aspects makes sense, you might as well trade away your high draft picks if all you are going to do is squander them on Flush Patterson, Ponder or Troy Willamson.
  46. The only player listed that is worth anything is Mack. The rest of those listed are all garbage. Id have no problem if they got rid of the other 3 but Mack will be gone anyway becuz he isnt re-signing here.
    I agree w someone above put Haden on the trading block too.
  47. If the situation inside the locker room is as bad as it appears to everyone else, why WOULD Mack want to resign in Cleveland, when he can sign as a free agent with a contender that has a great shot at getting him a ring. like, as much as it pains me to say it, the Pats and the Packers, perhaps. Denver? Get real. Peyton is barely out of a wheelchair now. He needs to retire at year’s end or sooner, even. He’s becoming more painful to watch than Favre at the end.
    ____________
    The lack of knowledge here is stunning. Baltimore has very little cap room, the same with NE. No team can just “do a one year deal with someone” when a player is traded he comes with an intact contract that has to fit under the cap.
    You are only half right about teams being tight with cash. Your owner is notoriously tight, heck he makes Mara (my team’s penurious owner) look like a free spender. NE, however, routinely spends to the cap. The Patriots just do it in a different way, they pay the middle of their roster substantially more than most. While they may not have a handful of guys at the top of the cap charts they are not sitting on a pile of cash either.
  49. Lions need OL help and everyone needs solid LBs.
    Too bad they have nothing to offer other than picks they need to rebuild and other crummy veterans.
  50. There is only one constant in the Browns’ years of misery. The football-knowledge-deficient fans. Owner has changed, unis have changed, players, GMs, coaches, stadium… all changed. Heck even the team itself moved and of course immediately won a Super Bowl(after getting away from the fans and their low standards). Browns fans are clueless about football talent. They all clamored for Phil Dawson, Billy Winn, Brian Hoyer, TJ Ward, Dion Lewis, Dqwell Jackson to be sent packing and they wildly celebrated drafting Golbert, Mingo, Manziel, Erving. At this very moment on AM radio here the fans are still claiming that Farmer and Pettine are on the brink of taking them to the playoffs… literally on 92.3 as I am listening in Cleveland. Haslam is a genius to buy the frqanchise. Like Lerner he doesn;t have to pay attention bc he will have a sellout everytime despite putting a terrible product out there. A Browns fan would buy Chipotle every week, even if they knew an employee was $hitting in the burrito bowl every time, hahahaha.
  51. As a Lions fan, I feel you pain!!! Good luck in the chase for the #1 draft choice!! Which if the Lions win, they will screw it up anyway, and draft another TE! So go ahead you might as well take the pick!!!
  52. Building for the future my ass. That’s the same crap we have been hearing for the past 16 years and nothing ever seems to change. Every 2 years they clean everything out in the name of rebuilding. Well, in order to rebuild that means that at one time you had something built. Nothing has been built here since they came back. Now they are going to rebuild? What they are going to do is try to unload the big contracts and start over with small contracts which also means much lower talent. They already have low talent. This makes me sick, I can’t even type anymore, what a dumpster fire!
  53. Remember the stability everyone wanted? I thought everyone was crying about not having a coach in Cleveland for more than two years in a row. Now some want to run them out of town and blow up this team. ”
    Better stop Farmer from screwng up the team with trades.
    Being a propetual looser is a problem that management with God’s help has to stop. Get some hellraising nasty coaches in here to put the fear of God into these talented underperformng players like Coach Bill has in New England.
    His boys perform and play the whole game at a high level. No drop off like we just witnessed in the second half. Tough teams ahead on the schedule.
    With the first draft pick in the 2016 draft the Cleveland Browns pick…..You know, the next dud….or a real player. How is our #1 performing this year? Dud or player?
  54. I bet they would unload Johnny Football if they could. Likely a huge cap hit plus who wants his drama? The kid should have stayed in school another year or two and honed his skills, plus grown up a bit more.
    The way he is going, in another year or two tops, he will be out of the league entirely.
  55. I don’t think the Browns will trade all those players that were mentioned in the article but maybe some. However the Browns may not just give them away either.
