49ers coach says he’s “evaluating everyone,” including Colin Kaepernick

AP

Jim Tomsula has insisted in the past that Colin Kaepernick was his quarterback.

Today, he stopped well short of that.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the 49ers coach was asked about Kaepernick’s status today, and responded by saying: “We’re evaluating everyone.”

Considering the backup plan is Blaine Gabbert, that should be all the indication anyone needs that Kaepernick’s season has hit the rocks.

Kaepernick averaged 4.0 yards per attempt yesterday against the Rams, and looks like a guy who needs a week off, if only to get out of the rain so he can be fixed for some later point.

  1. I can’t believe its come to this where i’m actually saying this, but… maybe we do need to see what Gabbert can do. It’s not like he’d dash our playoff hopes or anything

  2. And yet Baalke is still behaving like a deer in the headlights obsessing over making the change that should have been made weeks ago. PLEASE football gods, make this Baalke’s last season of player acquisition failures.

  3. What a shame…Someone needs to evaluate Balke and the entire coaching staff…The owner should evaluate his own abilities…Dork needs to be careful or mommy will take his shiny toy away…..

  4. Tomsula, you are supposed to evaluate your entire team BEFORE the regular season begins.
It is quite obvious that you didn’t, or…….had no idea what you were looking for.
I’m not sure that I’ve seen a team absolutely collapse like this in just one season. Amazing, and amusing.

San Fran….I think that you had better have your Tomsula removed. I think it’s infected.

  5. Too bad they can’t evaluate the owner and replace him with something more qualified to run the team like a laboratory rat.

  6. Why bother? York and Balke couldn’t find anyone to coach the team, these guys were set up to fail. Until Al Davis 2.0 gets rid of the team, there is really no need to evaluate anybody. The team is going to continue to lose.

  7. It’s time for those heralded words to be spoken from the heavens over the Bay Area that the rest of us have all been waiting for…

“The Gabbert Era has begun in San Francisco.”

  8. Hey 49ers fans….straight up trade by a Bills fan here ……………I’ll trade you Wrecks Ryan for Ron Jeremy?

  9. Again, the 49ers continue to promote the narrative that Kaepernick is the big problem rather than Jed York and Trent Baalke.

  10. I guess harbaugh wasn’t the problem after all with the niners.

Welcome to mediocrity for the next decade. That’s what you get when you don’t appreciate what you have.

  11. Tomsula is clearly a downgrade from Harbaugh but I get the feeling that some 49rs fans actually that Kaep wouldn’t be as bad as he is if Harbaugh was still there.

He would (be as bad). The 49rs have so many holes in their roster it will take years to build them into a contender even if it was being done the right way and Kaep isn’t the only problem…..but he certainly is the biggest one. His season hasn’t hit rock bottom, his career has and its not coming back.

You gotta take Jed Dork and Trent Baalke with ya, and you gotta give us back Boobie Dixon since we literally have no one else to hand the ball off too and he looks like an ewok from Star Wars, and it’s a deal!!

  13. They broke him in this offense and there’s no game-plan every week. its stunning, really.

I think he starts somewhere else in 2016 with a real coach and a non-abysmal OL.

  14. Jed York scammed all the Fans for “Affordable” PSL’S for Levi Stadium then let the whole team go with his ego.

You the real MVP *Slow Claps*

  15. My Eagles better be on line 1. I’ll take him over Sammy B any day. Kapernick in Chip Kelly’s system? Yes, please.

Oh, and Tomsula is a clown. He might even get fired before the end of the year.

  16. talking about a quick turnaround. for the niners, it’s the downfall turnaround unfortunately.

  17. It’s not 7’s fault at all. He should be kept for next season and many seasons after that.

  18. The only question that’s answer is “Blaine Gabbert” is “Name one of the biggest QB draft busts ever”

I’ve seen firsthand what Gabbert can do, trust me – you don’t want to see it.

  20. No one should be blaming Tomsula. He had to take his shot once Baalke offered it to him. The blame lies squarely and firmly with York and Baalke. Top notch organisations adapt and accommodate creative, progressive or game changers no matter how “difficult” their character. Don’t tell me Apple, Virgin, Microsoft, Google etc don’t have “hard to deal with” people.

It’s dead simple. York and Baalke thought they could manage with a puppet coach and did everything possible to undermine Harbaugh. They are now doing the same to Kaepernick to try to disguise their actions and blatant mismanagement for as long as possible. Regardless of what ANYONE says there are 25 plus teams in the league who would sign Kaepernick in a heartbeat if he became available. Fact. If York and Baakle continue, one of those 25 will get the opportunity.

Tomsula is the least qualified coach in the NFL. Anything he says has been pre-approved by Trent Baalke.

    #YorkFamilyisGarbage

I’d put Caldwell at that spot. Tomsula doesn’t even have a full year under him as head coach and we’ve seen Caldwell fail on multiple occasions.

  22. Colin Kaepernick is the main reason for their failures this year. As bad as the defense is, and the coaching is, in your ESPN blame pie he gets 51-60%.

But I still think he can be effective with San Francisco as their starting quarterback. Boldin and Davis come off the books this offseason so you can replenish with pieces that fit his style.

There are a lot of talented defensive players in this upcoming draft int he first few picks and diamonds in the rough who might go in the third or fourth.

This season is lost and they need to just admit that. If you want to go to Blaine Gabbert in the next few weeks I don’t have a problem.

I do think Kaepernick should get a shot with a fresh team and coach though. Jim Tomsula wasn’t ready for this opportunity, lost a lot of good pieces and some of the aging ones got even older. If the GM doesn’t screw up in the offseason there’s a chance San Francisco can do a quick rebuild and be back to an 8-10 win team next year.

Saying there are 25 teams that would pick up kaepernick doesn’t mean anything when only maybe 3-5 of those teams would actually give him a chance.

  24. If you’re Tomsula and you’re “evaluating everyone” and Kaepernick’s backup is Blaine Gabbert, then Kaepernick is still your starting Quarterback. Ride Kaep out and get your high draft pick.

  25. Definetely not going to defend Kaep as he is not good but have you seen what he has to work with? 3 Rb’s injured, one of the worst olines in football and his wr’s are Quinton Patton and Jerome Simpson? This problem goes FAR beyond #7.

  26. Yeah, run harbaugh out of town because your “feelings” were hurt…lol.

Harbaugh turned around the disaster that was Alex Smiths career, and then turned this clown into a starting QB in a superbowl…but its cool, rather be a losing, sorry excuse for a profootball team who is happy then a winning team with an annoying coach.

Reconsider your soft as charmin owner and front office, then maybe you’ll get somewhere.

  27. I don’t think there are 25 teams that would interested in Kaepernick. The Browns, Bills, Jets, Eagles, and Texans are the only obvious suitors. The Rams and Chiefs might consider him an upgrade. Other than that, it’s possible a team with an aging starter might look to rehabilitate Kaepernick for the future.

  28. How do you turn a winning franchise into a steaming pile? Get an owner with an ego. Get a GM who doesn’t know what he’s doing but wants to take credit for the success born out of a head coach’s talent. And oh yeah, fire that head coach and out your puppet in there. And abracadabra we have Jim Bob Tomsula leading the 49ers. Good luck 49er fans, it may be a lifetime till you start winning again.

  29. Funny how that team was working just fine last year now the ‘new’ coach is ‘evaluating’ everyone. We really know where the problem is and it’s in the Front Office.

  30. “No one should be blaming Tomsula. He had to take his shot once Baalke offered it to him”

Didn’t Ron Jeremy rat out Harbaugh to upper management?

    That’s the word.

  31. No way Tomsula is qualified to evaluate anybody.

“We’re going to win with class.” LOL!

  32. I save my critical comments for the loud mouth Rex Ryan and the delusional Steeler coaches, players and fans, but when it comes to Tomsula and the 49ers I simply feel sad.

  33. I was at the game. SF defense just needs a few additions, db and olb. Kap threw almost every ball like a 100mph fastball. No touch. WR are pretty bad, especially Patton. He seems unsure of patterns and won’t extend his route while your qb scrambles.
One good draft and SF could be competitive, if they fix the qb.

  34. What the 49ers need to do is to let go of Jim Tomsula by bringing in Chip Kelly from the Philadelphia Eagles (also on the hot seat there). He does not fit in well in Philly as going back to the West Coast as the new head coach in San Fran will benefit by acquiring Marcus Mariota for Kaepernick if he’s not a free agent in addition of swapping draft pick or so. Niners will be an interesting team should Kelly come back to the West Coast w/ Mariota.
