Vontaze Burfict shrugs off criticism from Steelers

After Sunday’s loss to the Bengals, some Steelers players took issue with the way Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict responded after Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell’s knee injury.

Burfict made the hit on the play that ended Bell’s season and drew criticism from guard Ramon Foster for the way he reacted to the play.

“He’s that type of guy,” Foster said, via ESPN.com. “That type of guy will get his sooner or later. … If you’ve played against him, you know what I mean by it. He’ll play it off, act dumb about it, but you don’t run across the field acting hyped, celebrating, running up and down when a guy goes down like that.”

Steelers linebacker Vince Williams also tweeted (and eventually deleted) that he’d get some revenge on Burfict if they were to run into each other during the offseason. Burfict responded on Twitter that Williams knew where to find him and then responded more generally to the Steelers.

“We won,” Burfict said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “He’s mad they lost. I have nothing to say about it. It was a clean hit. Le’Veon is a friend of mine. I didn’t intentionally mean to hurt him. It’s football. He’s going to come back strong.”

Should Foster, Williams or any other Steelers want to take up the issue with Burfict, the two teams are scheduled to meet again on December 13 in Cincinnati.

  1. Dear Steelers,
Please quit complaining about hits and players reactions after said hits.

    Sincerely,
    Carson Palmer and Keith Rivers

  2. Jesus!!!! talk about complete BS!

How anyone who has watched the play ever say that (a) the hit was intentional to cause injury and/or (b) he celebrated the injury is completely beyond me.

The tackle was text book (wrap up and swing body around to use weight to take player down quickly) and if you watch the video he pops straight up from the tackle and runs to the team sideline celebrating a good play (like all players do) not once having looked at Bell for a second. He didn’t even know he was injured.

Its a lot of crying from Steelers fans because they lost Bell which is understandable, and because the lost.

Its not even close to a dirty play or celebrating an injury in any shape or form.

  3. The Steelers can complain about this all they want but they’re just upset because they’re on the receiving end of this. They certainly weren’t complaining when Terence Garvin broke the jaw of Bengals punter Kevin Huber. And they definitely weren’t complaining when Hines Ward was delivering dirty hits year after year.

  4. Anyone who watches Burfict’s reaction after making the stop, vs the Steelers reaction when they tried to injure Marvin Jones will tell you the Steelers players are wrong and lame for claiming Burfict celebrated.

He ran off the field. The replay is shown over and over every time the injury is replayed (do the Steelers not know this), and you can see for yourself.

There was only one celebration if you watch both plays. That came from the Steelers after they thought they knocked Jones out the game. Hypocrites.

  5. It’s so ironic that they stealers who;

Intentionally took out Carson Palmer in the 2005 playoff game AND took out Chris Henry on a similar tackle ON THE SAME PLAY!

Took out Keith Rivers with a dirty block by Whines Hard.

Broke our punters jaw on a dirty hit.

Now they want to whine and cry because a completely legal tackle took out their best player, and also accuse him of celebrating the hit. He didn’t celebrate the hit… not like Joey Porter did when Palmer was taken out in 2005… I was there and watched as he taunted the crowd about it.

I abhor the stealers, and have since 1968, but I hate seeing a player of Bell’s caliber being seriously injured. You lost and it was a clean hit, there was no celebration… get over it and try to make the playoffs as a wild card

Screw the hypocritical whining stealer fans… take your six Lombardi’s and urine rags and shove them where the sun doesn’t shine.

  6. I was @ the game near the field. Burfict & Bell slapped 5 before the first offensive snap. It was a clean tackle. There was no intent @ all. It’s too bad it happened to such a vital player for the Steelers. But lets not forget Mike Mitchell telling Green during the game he was gonna “split him in 2” if he tried to come across the middle. Next man up!

  7. Not impressed with Bengals. Very weak record and barely won against a Steeler unit beat down with injuries. Red Rifle will come through as usual and the Bungals will be one and done again this year.

Keep that head on a swivel Vontaze. What goes around comes around in the NFL.

  8. No mention of Mike Mitchell telling AJ Green “you’re next” after injuring Marvin Jones?

Boy, the Steelers players and their fan base are seriously the sorest losers in sports. Get over it.

  9. Blame the garbage turf at Heinz field. And I didn’t hear all this complaining when Heinz Ward would consistently blow guys up with now illegal and cheap blind side shots that supposedly “personified” Steeler football.

Get well soon to Leveon bell and wishes for a full recovery. But maybe Foster should focus a little more on pass protection an a little less on a perfect form tackle that resulted in an unfortunate injury.

  10. It was a relatively clean tackle and Bell just twisted down awkwardly. However, Burfict was celebrating as he crossed the field and not just the stop. When the media asked him why he was celebrating, he said that he wasn’t celebrating but was horrified because he heard Bell’s knee pop. If he was horrified, wouldn’t he have hung around to make sure Bell was okay instead of acting like a 5 year old on Christmas morning? Bengals fans like to call it karma in order to use the Carson Palmer injury as an excuse as to why they have not won a playoff game in 25 years but in that case Kimo was Carson’s friend and I believe they were roommates when they were teammates so there was no intent there either. And Kimo did not celebrate afterwards.

  11. While Sunday’s hot wasn’t dirty, this guy should be banned from the league for all of the things he does do to intentionally hurt players.

He’s got no right to play the game.

  12. Never saw any of the Bengals refer to kimo Von ollhoffen as dirty after the cp9 hit, or to Hines ward after the block on Keith rivers, or Kevin’s huber after he got his jaw broke on a punt.

Losing bat home to the bengals is just new for the steelers

  13. Everyone knows that Vontaze has a track record of doing dumb and childish things but there was nothing wrong with the tackle at all. If this was a different player then nothing would’ve been said about it other than leveon got hurt during a routine play.

  14. I really am confused why the Steelers are interpreting that tackle as dirty or a deliberate attempt to hurt Bell; it didn’t appear remotely that way, live or on replay, and Burfict wasn’t flagged; even if it was the ‘celebration’ that bothered them, no one knew Bell was badly hurt at that point. In the same game, Marvin Jones was obliterated by a hard but clean tackle (I thought he was badly hurt) and no one on either side said a thing; and it’s a little disingenous coming from the Steelers, who seriously injured Kevin Huber and Keith Rivers on blind-side blocks in past seasons, but just chalked it up to hard, physical play. If it had been anyone but Burfict making the play, no one would have said a thing.

  15. Yet no Bengal is taking issue with Mike Mitchell celebrating his hit put on Marvin Jones that left him down for a few minutes. East coast Whiners.

  16. Funny how the biggest cheap shot artists in the world are complaining about a clean hit. Hines Ward on Keith Rivers, Kimo on Palmer, some other loser on Kevin Huber. All cheap shots, none flagged. Two of those plays above resulted in broken jaws, clearly head to head cheap shots. You lost Steelers – get over it.

  17. And Mike Mitchell told AJ Green “You’re next” after he hit Marvin Jones, while Jones was still laying on the turf injured. So the hypocritical bumble bees better get their own house in order before they start talking. Sore losers, thats all i’m seeing.

  18. It’s cute how the bungles think they are gonna win something this year! You’ll win the afc north and that’s it. Teams like Denver and patriots will give you your annual January beat down! Another crushing end to their season. Then we Will all show up and tweet, post and get a huge chuckle at their expense. And let’s face it we all love a good January bungles car wreck!

  19. This was as clean a tackle as you’ll ever see from Vontaze. He’s coming back from missing OVER A YEAR of football and he made a tackle. He immediately hopped up excited and didn’t stick around to see what happened to Bell. You expect him to check on everyone he tackles to make sure they’re ok before he celebrates the tackle? Of course he’s excited about being back on the football field.

  20. somehow I don’t think you’d hear Mean Joe Greene talking like this after a game.

Steelers and Steeler fans really need to start respecting the history they brag about so much.

  21. Dear Vontaze,
Please understand that Steelers’ fans are the biggest crybabies in the NFL and always blame others for their team’s repeated failures. When Bell isn’t missing significant time being injured, he’s getting suspended for dope. None of this is your fault.
    Best,
An unbiased observer who is LOL at all the whining.

  22. Sure Vontaze. Tell everyone why you were celebrating after tackling Bell after he gained 8 yards on a first down play? Is that something players normally celebrate? You didn’t stop him for a loss, stop him on third down, or get a turnover. You celebrated because he was hurt. You are a punk.

  23. The headline should read “Vince Williams threatens Vontaze Burfict.” He tweeted “I catch Burfict on South Beach I’m painting that bio on sight.” Then he deleted it. But it has been captured and is being shared online. If anyone wants a link to it I can tell you where to find it.

  24. LOL, Anyone that mentions the Palmer hit is a comedian. That was 10 years ago. Oh and who is Keith Rivers? By the way, since that Palmer hit the Steelers have been to three Superbowls and won 2. Why don’t the Bengals win 1 playoff game per 25 years first. Make that your goal,as unobtainable as it is….

  25. This is the sort of whining that I expect from the Ravens. The hit was clean. Burfict was excited to have made the tackle and had no idea he was injured. His leg isn’t even in is line of sight at the time.

The dirtiest play in that game was the facemask on Reggie Nelson after one of the few INTs. You can’t deny it’s intention either. Overall, this was a cleanly played game.

  26. The real whiners on this post are the fans of the losers like the Bungles who, let me think, don’t have any rings. Steelers still have 6 rings…your team has zero. And if your Ravens’ fans, or the fans of virtually any team but the 49ers, Packers, Giants, and New England, send Steeler nation a text when you get to two.

  27. “Excited to make a tackle”, after giving up 8 yards on a first down play. Yeah, right. Delusional people.

  28. I don’t think the hit was dirty. But I do believe he celebrated because he knew Bell was badly hurt. Burfict is a punk.

  29. Stop it Bungals fans, stop pretending this isn’t the same Burfict who was busted and fined for twisting the ankles of Newton and Olsen when they played Carolina. Burfict is documented dirty.

This is two years in a row now. Obviously the Bengals can’t stop Bell so the strategy is to hurt Bell. The deluded fans on the Cincy message boards and your deluded newspapers need to realize this. Shamefully the Cincy paper pointed to Bell’s getting hurt as the big play the Bungals made Sunday. Disgusting.

And stop pretending like the hit wasn’t clean. And stop pretending like your players weren’t the ones celebrating an injury. They celebrated after they hit Jones and Mitchell got flagged for telling AJ Green he was next. They taunted and gloated after Kevin Huber’s jaw was broken a couple years ago. Hines Ward was high fiving his teammates after breaking Keith Rivers jaw. There’s a reason he retired after they changed the concept of a legal hit. Your team does this all the time, so when an injury happens on a clean hit, why are they crying?

  31. If the roles had been reversed (aka Kimo), my PIT friends would have dismissed this as just “a crybaby upset about smash mouth Steelers football”. My how times have changed.

  32. While Sunday’s hot wasn’t dirty, this guy should be banned from the league for all of the things he does do to intentionally hurt players.
    ————-
If we’re banning guys from the game for cheap hits, I doubt the Steelers could even field a team.

  33. Steeler fans like to bring up 6 rings, but who cares about that when you are whining like you are. If you are going to throw your rings up, then act like Champion. Whining over a clean tackle is not how Champions act.

  34. Awwwww……..how ADORABLE….the wittle Steeler fans had their feewins hurt! LMAO

Absolutely a Clean hit…..regardless of anything in Burficts past…..the video shows a CLEAN hit. He won’t even be fined. Get over it

Don’t like players celebrating injuries?? Well then…..better start contacting Tomlin and the Rooney’s. Change STARTS at home….oh wait…..they probably didn’t realize Marvin Jones was hurt……right??? It’s different when YOUR team does it…..I forgot!

    7-0 Baby! 🙂

  35. Stop hating on the Bengals because their not a big market team. They could win the Super Bowl and folks are still going to hate. Get over it and enjoy their success .

  36. Thanks for all the memories of Hines Ward. God I miss him…

Anyway, the hit was clean, and the Bengals won.

However, I seriously am surprised at how unimpressive the Bengals were. Standings aside, they seemed like the same old unit we see every year. Bengals fans should be concerned that as bad as the Steelers played, they also gave the game away.

    ————————————–

Say WHAT? Ward played 13 years and finally got the ring he coveted. I think that had a bit more to do with his calling it a career than the rather silly suggestion you’re making.

You realize Ward was a wide receiver (which makes all the whining over his handling of a big bad linebacker all the more amusing). He wasn’t being paid to hit people like some safety. So what would that have to do with some decision to retire?

But since you brought him up, here’s the difference. Ward hit you head on, man to man (go ask Ed Reed). He didn’t resort to cheesy little stunts like twisting a guy’s ankle when he’s down, like Burfict. Big difference.

  38. Clean hit, awkward landing…moving on.
The Bungals can start talking more when they actually win something worth while, like a playoff game. Until then they are full of hot air and fairy dust.

  39. Really? How many times do the steelers players head hunt or “blow people up” and the fans call it “steeler football” but they call this illegal? Steelers fans are the worst, horrible football knowledge, and all i ever hear about is towels and curtains….

  40. It used to be that other teams would just out-smart the meathead Steelers and win. Now, they beat them up too.

  41. I’m just wondering why the NFL doesn’t step in with those kind of threats he’s making against Burfict. If his intentions are to make this into a gang violence sport, then he needs to be fined. Terror isn’t within his First Amendment rights.

  42. Since week one the Squealers have found something to piss & moan about. Hope they make it back to Foxboro in the playoffs so they can get schooled by the Pats….Again

  43. ““Excited to make a tackle”, after giving up 8 yards on a first down play. Yeah, right. Delusional people.”

This Cincy team plays with energy and doesn’t get down on its self. Your’s could learn something from it.

  44. Wait… the Steelers, who have had James Harrison on the team forever… are complaining that someone is not showing any remorse after hurting someone on the field?

Wow, what a joke. The Steelers used to be hard. Are they turning into whiny, “help protect me from the bad people” pansies?
