Rex Ryan says Dolphins denied him permission to hire Dan Campbell

AP

It seems like the only thing the Bills lacked in the swagger department this offseason was a good Oklahoma drill.

But it apparently wasn’t for a lack of trying.

Vai Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Bills head coach Rex Ryan said on a conference call that the Dolphins blocked his attempt to bring then-tight ends coach Dan Campbell onto his staff, refusing permission to interview him.

The Dolphins clearly liked Campbell, they made him interim coach upon firing Joe Philbin.

But given the fire Campbell showed in his early days in charge in Miami, it seems like it would have been a natural fit.

Ryan joked that he thought he could take most NFL coaches, but “I ain’t whipping that one.”

As loud and proud as Ryan has been since taking over in Buffalo, one can only imagine the influx of testosterone Campbell would have brought.

  1. As if Campbell would have gone if Rex was able to talk to him. Being interviewed by Rex Ryan is like standing in front of a blast furnace powered by rancid Oreos.

  2. prob for the best rex, buffalo is realizing ur a bust- so Dan may have had your spot by now. This defensive ‘genius’ took a top 5 defense and turned it into one that cant crack the top 25.

  3. “Ryan joked that he thought he could take most NFL coaches, but “I ain’t whipping that one.””

Rex, you’re not taking Belichick either. He would figure out a way to defeat you before he walked into the ring. It would already be over before you realized it had started… just like always. Kiss the rings Rex, kiss the rings.

  4. Does anything stay confidential with this guy? If you are out there making a deal there are a lot better options than a big mouth.

  5. If Dan gets this team to win out, Dan deserves to be the coach of this team!!! Even with the no show in New England he’s a far cry from what Philbin was doing!!! GO FINS!!!

  6. Ryan joked that he thought he could take most NFL coaches, but “I ain’t whipping that one.”

Yeah, that’s how games are won Rex!

  7. Once again an article about Rex is commented on by like 90% Pats fans. For all that you all talk about Rex’s obsession with the Patriots (and he should be obsessed with getting past the best team in the division and NFL) you seem to have quite the obsession with talking about Rex. He seems to have gotten under your skins. I thought the Patriots and their fans were above all this stuff though?

    It is always about Rex.

Well, we know it’s not about Canada, which is a good thing. They don’t have the NFL there.

  9. Mr Pegula……..please make him go away……..signed…………. a Bills fan for over 50 years……

  10. Can only imagine the noise at practice had Rex gotten his wish. That said, I doubt this attempt to get into Campbell’s head will do him any good. When will Rex learn that while he may need the noise most every other HC is above it? Hopefully even the interim ones. That’s how they end up getting the word interim removed. Who knows, maybe next year Campbell will be given permission to hire Rex as his DC

    You thought wrong.

The Patriots are above it, but the fans are free to talk as much smack as they want. Especially about a bozo like Rex Ryan.

  12. Not surprised to see Pat fans coming out of the woodwork. Anyone who has followed the AFC East knows Ryan had it in his head for Brady and Belichick. He would spew a bunch of drivel and then get beat most of the time on the following Sunday. Now the same thing is happening again, except with a different team in the AFC East.

  13. Every other fan of 31 teams do you self a favor read who is posting ( Pathetics fans somehow taking up most posts on all stories) and scroll right past.

  14. I think Rex was smart to look at a rising star like Campbell. Any leader who is successful has surrounded themselves with talent. The talent increases and grows with the leaders tutelage. Hopefully, the subordinate learns how to do some things better from the boss. Unfortunately, the subordinate may also learn why they should not do other things. It is all part of the learning process.

I doubt if Campbell learned as much about doing things right from Philbin. Rex would have been an upgrade. I hope coach Campbell wins this weeks battle with the Bills.

    GO Dolphins!

  15. I bet if literally any other coach said that they tried to interview Campbell but got blocked that: a) there would not be an article written about it, and b) everyone would just take it for the comment that it is.

But yeah, everyone keep your big ragers going for Rex
