Titans will be able to pursue Chip Kelly, if they want to

AP

The path for Chip Kelly to reunite with Marcus Mariota became a lot clearer on Tuesday, when the Titans fired coach Ken Whisenhunt. To put the two together again, here’s how it would work.

After the season ends for the Titans and Eagles, the Titans would be permitted to request from the Eagles permission to speak to Kelly, and to sign him to a contract. Before permission is granted, the two teams must negotiate the terms of compensation, in the event the Titans hire Kelly.

The question becomes what the Eagles would want for Kelly, and what the Titans would be willing to surrender. Much of that hinges on how committed Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is to keeping Kelly around — and how committed the Titans would be to getting him.

Kelly’s wishes will be a major factor in this. If he wants out of Philly, Lurie likely won’t put up a major fight to keep him around. Especially if the Eagles, currently 3-4, don’t make it to the playoffs this season.

As Kelly is learning, thanks to a revolving door that has included Mike Vick, Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez, and Sam Bradford, a coach needs a great quarterback to succeed consistently at the NFL level. While the jury is still out on whether Mariota will be a great NFL quarterback, Kelly believes that Mariota will be great.

  1. It would take at least two first round picks to pry Kelly from Philly, picks that would better serve the Titans if used on players. For that matter, they’d be better off trading Mariota TO Philly for two first round picks, instead.

  2. Should be the other way around, Eagles should be pursuing Mariota. If a new front office is assembled, chances are they will want their own QB. Maybe Mariota is that guy, hopefully not.

  3. just stop it…. like it or not, the Eagles are in the division title race and it is crazy to start speculating about end of season coach trades!

So Chip the GM,is going to trade Chip The Coach? How exactly does that work?

i just about spit out my tea, hi-larious.

  5. The Titans need a new front office that drafts well.
Even if Mariotta is a reasonable QB, he can’t win by himself.
Why would Chip Kelly go to that team?

  6. you are just going to keep banging this drum until it picks up steam with the rest of the national jabroni’s aren’t you. There is no speculation to this besides what you are creating.

  7. Especially if the Eagles, currently 3-4, don’t make it to the playoffs this season.

They are only 1 game back from the 4-4 Giants. Philly may only lose two more games this year (NE and AZ) and finish 10-6 for the 3rd straight season.

  8. …I think the Eagles would be better off as a franchise to let Chip go in exchange for the draft picks he GAVE away plus more. I was on board when we hired him, but a coach that can’t work with a GM, gets rid of proven talent, & is power hungry hurts the team.

  9. Chip Kelly will most likely end up back in college. Even with Mariota the Titans are in a complete rebuild. Kelly has no patients for that, signing 20 free agents is not the answer in the NFL, it doesn’t work. Titans would be better off hiring Kyle Shanahsn or Hue Jackson and build the team through the draft.

    Well said!

  11. Jeffery Lurie has been in this business for a long time and hasn’t won a super bowl. I don’t see any reason why Chip Kelly and Lurie wouldn’t want to keep working toward their mutual goal of winning a super bowl. Lurie just gave Kelly complete control a couple months ago, so Kelly has had one off-season so far. They’ve hardly gotten this thing off the ground. Bill Walsh was 2-14 his first year in San Francisco. Jimmy Johnson was 1-15 his first year. Chuck Noll certainly wasn’t winning his first season either. The Eagles had a non-football guy running the team just a few months ago. It’s not all going to get fixed overnight. You have to bring in good players, and get rid of bad ones. You have to clean up the front office too. I love what Kelly’s done so far.

  12. I call BS. You’re painting a picture of Kelly being a petulant child. Stomping his feet. “WahWahWah I don’t have a franchise quarterback. Let me out of my contract. This is too hard. wahwahwah”

There’s nothing remotely true about any of this.

  13. Marriota is not over rated
Chip Kelly isn’t going to be our coach
We are not giving draft picks for our next coach
Marriota isn’t going to be traded
The Titans are horrible at this point

  14. Bet Tennessee has to be kicking themselves to some degree for not taking the king’s ransom Chip Kelly had offered to trade for the #2 overall pick to take Mariota in the first place.

  15. Chip has created a complete dumpster fire there so I bet it wouldn’t take much at all to pry him from the Eagles. The only way they would block him or ask for a ton in return is if they want to see him go down with the ship.

  16. If he thought like the colts Kelly would just make sure they lost their remaining games and get himself fired. Then new Titans GM Chip could sign Chip the coach without having to part with any picks.
But then losing deliberately is despicable and isn’t in keeping with the ‘integrity of the game’…

    10-6 got Lovie fired.

About the ONLY thing that is 100% accurate is that the Titans are horrible. Everything else is speculation or a guess.

Mariota is an unknown, a couple games doesn’t give any clue on if he is a franchise QB, an NFL QB, over rated or a complete bust. Any QB can have a couple of great games and have a couple of terrible games. Early last year, everybody was talking about how Tom Brady was looking like he might be done, guess that was a bit premature, huh?

Chip Kelly may be coaching anywhere or nowhere, all depends on how this season plays out. I do agree it is highly unlikely he will be the head coach in Tennessee however.

If that is true, the draft picks point is self explanatory. If Chip Kelly ends up in Tennessee, they will give up draft picks, unless Philly is beyond stupid.

I agree Mariota will not be traded, unless of course, either Philly comes up with an 8 for 1 deal or Tennessee is stupid.

Have fun, Titan fan, keep your head up

  19. While we’re at it, why don’t we just speculate that Chip would be better off trading entire rosters. Clearly the Eagles have more overall talent so the Titans should do it. Then Chip would get to coach the Titans roster without having to give up talent/picks to get him as the coach. Plus he wouldn’t come off as a quitter AND he would build his legend as a crazy trader.

In Philly 10-6 for the third year in a row with ZERO playoff wins is perfectly acceptable. Chips a genius ya know, Philly fans love what he’s done with the team as stated above.

Andy Reid only delivered 5 NFC championship games & a super bowl appearance in his tenure as Eagles coach & he DESERVED to be fired according to Philly fans.

  21. As a fan of an AFC team that is not the Titans, I say please please please bring Chip Kelly to Tennessee! That would be one less team to worry about.

  22. Oh please. We are talking about an unproven rookie QB on a 1-6 team. Is it really worth it for Kelly to follow him like an infatuated lunatic stalking a Hollywood actress?

And so far it ain’t working so well for Philly anyway, why would Tenessee bet the farm for Kelly?

Don’t you think that it would be admitting a major failure on Jeff Lurrie’s part to let Kelly come in and deal away half the core talent on the team and then leave?

  23. No one here in Nashville wants Chip Kelly. We just got rid of one coach that ran our team into the ground, we have no desire to get the one that’s running Philly down.

  24. Chip Kelly will not quit on the 2015 Eagles if they don’t quit on him. Should Bradford quit playing timid and receivers catch the ball, they will be good this year.

  25. Breathe people. This is hypothetical. No one is saying kelly wants to leave, no one is saying the eagles want him gone, no one is saying the titans want him. All it says is that if the titans wanted him, this stuff would have to happen.

  26. It would be great if Lurie agreed to trade Kelly to the Titans, but only in exchange for Mariota…

  27. I love it when they throw fuel on a totally unsubstantiated fire & see who will run with the flame.

  28. It’s just time to stop it in fanning these non-flames of Chip to the Titans. Please, just stop talking about it.

  29. Simplify: Sam Bradford to the Titans in exchange for Mariota to the Eagles. Bradford, former Okie Sooner QB, would be most welcome in Tennessee — and Kelly could finally reign in all of his former Oregon stars: LaMichael James, Kenjon Barner, Marcus Mariota et al.

  30. Everyone keeps trashing the titans but in reality there not that far away, yeah it sounds dumb because they are 1-6 but they got a really solid d. Young quarterback with alot of promise just need to protect him better and find a true #1 wr and good coach.

  31. The Titans should pass on Chip and go after Josh McDaniels. He probably learned his lesson from his time and Denver. He may turn the Titans around if he doesn’t try to be Bill Belichick, Jr. Although I can picture him in a Titans hoodie.

  32. Here’s another thought. Why get someone like Chip Kelly? If the Titans want to go with a head coach already with a team, they should go after Sean Payton. He turned the Saints around and took them to a Super Bowl.
