Rob Chudzinski: Ultimately, Andrew Luck has to make those plays

AP

New Colts offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski knows that the Colts’ offense will succeed less because of his play calling than because of Andrew Luck’s execution.

Chudzinski said that he and Luck talked after Pep Hamilton was fired and Chudzinski was promoted this week. Chudzinski came away impressed with Luck’s understanding of what he needs to do.

“Obviously we talked afterwards,” Chudzinski said. “I think Andrew wants to win. That’s what I get out of any conversation with him. He’s a special player and person, really unique. He has a plan for everything that he does, always working to improve and the goal of winning. He’s taken this thing, the bull by the horns and he’s working to get better every day himself.”

Chudzinski said the key for Luck is consistency.

“I see that there’s been times where he’s on fire, and there’s been times where not so much. Again, he knows and he’s worked on and talked about being consistent. Hopefully again, by design, there’s some things you can do to put him in that position where he is. Ultimately he has to go make those plays, and I’m confident he will,” Chudzinski said.

If Luck turns things around, the Colts can turn things around. If he doesn’t, there’s not much of anything Chudzinski can do to change the Colts’ fortunes.

  1. “Obviously we talked afterwards,” Chudzinski said. “I think Andrew wants to win.”

    Ya think?

  2. It goes a lot deeper than those two. In all fairness to Luck and Chud they didn’t build that soft as charmin team. If that mess turns around it will be because Luck turns it around to the point of carrying it

  3. colts were top 3 in yards and points last season. I dont believe pep just became incompetent in a season. Luck is playing horrible, its his fault. Interesting fact, colts defensive cap charge for this season is $74.8 million good for number 2 in the nfl behind seattle..

  4. Maybe the best thing a coach can do for Luck is to just stay out of his way and let him run an up-tempo offense. I’ll bet in Luck’s first four years they’ve run up tempo maybe 10% of the time, yet scored 90% of their points. Some things aren’t obvious, but some are. I think Chudzinski’s eyes are wide open and he’s noticed it too.

  5. .
Roger Goodell to media, ” Ryan Grigson is not to be touched. ”

Media to Goodell, ” Oh captain, my captain.”
    .

  6. Expecting Luck to make plays is what got the last OC fired. Not off to a good start Chudzinski. Watch out bye week is coming and Pagano and Grigson will do anything to save their jobs.

Luck better watch out against Broncos he might break some ribs with that O Line they got.

  7. Has any Colts fans considered that Andre Luck as maxed out. I mean he could be as good as he’s going to get. Everyone was ready to punch is ticket to Canton. I never saw him as being that Good. Just saying.

  8. Cam Newton made Chudzinski look great. Looks like Chud is basically preemptively throwing Luck under the bus for if/when the offense continues to struggle.

  9. Ha! It didn’t take Chud very long to make his case, put it in fine print. What better way to voice a major concern than putting it to the media, bypass Pagano and Grigson. The later two might be too busy putting their affairs in order to be bothered by football talk, anyways. Chud, could, soon to be head interim.

  10. Chud worked wonders for Cam Newton his first year. He showed to be creative, even with only one prolific WR. He’s got a lot more to work with in Indy.

I think Pagano wanted him all along. The problem is, Pep knew Andrew’s capabilities better than anybody. Announcing last year that they would throw more down the field, is something I always thought would hurt Luck.

He dinked and dunked at Stanford and did so successfully as a Colt. He has had crazy YAC, as receivers took short passes for long scores. Trying to throw longer passes has resulted in more ints. Chud had Cam going long on many plays. The problem is, Andrew does not have Cam’s arm. His ball stays in the air too long and DBs love that.

Firing Pep will not fix the problem.

Colts fans will be calling for chuds head after he continues to call long bombs on 3rd n inches all season long

    —————————–
Wow, poor Andrew. Pep wanted to run the ball up the middle every time, and now this guy is going to throw long on 3rd n inches? Maybe soon they’ll return to the good ol days when QBs just called their own plays.

  12. He has the best QB in the NFL. Luck aint the problem. Do us all a favor, and don’t screw it up Chud.

Does he think maybe having the WORST DEFENSE in the NFL, both statistically and in reality, has anything to do with the Phillies losing?

  13. Luck is a talented guy and not the problem with this team. The GM has put a weak roster of supporting players around him. The offensive line stinks and the defense is soft. Luck is trying to do too much because it is the only chance the Colts have of managing a win. Let’s look at last season’s draft. The Colts’ biggest needs were on the offensive and defensive lines….so what do they do? Draft another WR. Grigson is a fool.

Here’s proof- would anyone not trade their starting QB for Luck? Outside of MAYBE Green Bay, everyone would swap QB’s with Indy at the drop of a hat.
    _______________

Proof? At this point there are at least half a dozen teams and maybe as many as 10 that would laugh at that trade.

MAYBE Green Bay??? Uh… no. There are many more teams that would not currently trade their QB away for Andrew Luck. He isn’t what everyone thought he was going to be so far. This is his 4th year. The Honeymoon period is over.

If Indy had stuck with Manning and rebuilt the team around him they might have won another Super Bowl by now. Luck is starting to feel the pressure now.

  16. “I think Andrew wants to win. That’s what I get out of any conversation with him.”

Well, duhhh…looks like this new OC isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. He THINKS Luck wants to win…time to load up on Draft Kings, eh?

You seem to imply that teams like the Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, Chargers, Panthers, Cardinals and maybe a couple of others would bench their respective quarterbacks if they had Luck? The Andrew Luck that plays for the Colts?

    Surely you jest.

  18. It is simple. Stop calling all those fumble or interception plays Pep Hamilton was calling… Problem solved. After all, the only reason they canned him was the play calling… right?

    Karma…

Luck isnt close to Brady or Rodgers. Hes not better than Brees, Dalton, Roethlisbergr, or Newton
    ————————————–
You can add several more to that list.

  20. If luck can get his mojo back, hes going to dominate. Personally, its all in head anyway. Lets not forget it was pouring down rain in caroluna, and he still brought the team back to have a chance in ot. Just watch…luck will hav redemeption.

  21. Oh how quickly we forget. Luck led the league in TDs last season (40) and was 3rd in passing yards. Obviously he is going through something. Could be injury, could be a slump. I think it’s a combination of a lot of stuff, including Pep’s play calling. 7 step drops with THAT line?? Russell Wilson would get killed behind that line. But acting like he is some fraud after 3 seasons of really good football is ridiculous. Luck is part of the issue in Indy, but he isn’t Kaepernick by any means.

  22. Being reported in Indy that GM Grigson has been meddling in offensive lineups and coaching decisions. LOL! He can’t even do his own job properly and now he’s coaching.

The Colts are free, free fallin’

  23. Chud and Luck about to turn season around. They will make it to the playoffs, shock Patriot* fans, deflate their super Bowl hopes and win it themselves. Luck SB 50 MVP. It starts with the upset Sunday

  24. Think about it, every bronco player wants this win for Payton, maybe more than they want a lake house party in Minnesota. Broncos win by 20 with all the crap going on in Indy.

Get a clue. The Seahawk’s O-line is worse in pass-pro than the Colt’s O-line. You’re just reaching for excuses to prop up Luck. Your boy, BTW, has had the luxury of playing AFC South stiffs for 3+ years. 17-2 against AFC South teams but just 18-18 against the rest of the NFL. When will the excuses stop?

Funny, last time I recall, Luck outplayed Wilson, and T.Y. Hilton spun Sherman around about 5 times on his way to a huge night when the Colts BEAT the mighty Seahawks. He’s also 2-1 against Manning’s Broncos. I said it, he’s going through a rough spell. The Seahawks aren’t exactly lighting the world on fire right now either. Just goes to show, offensive lines can make or break a team. Luck has masked the problems in the past 3 seasons but he’s clearly off for some reason. And that’s a big part of why the Colts are 3-5

  27. The only chance the Colts have of beating the Broncos is if the Broncos fail to show up and forfeit the game.
