Chris Harris: Broncos’ defense has no weaknesses

AP

After dominating the Packers on Sunday, the Broncos are feeling pretty good about their defense.

In fact, Broncos cornerback Chris Harris says the Broncos are so good that there’s not a single area where opposing offenses can attack them.

“We really have no weaknesses. It’s really hard to say who you’re going to attack, who you’re going to go after. When you have a defense like this, it’s amazing to play with,” Harris told Trey Wingo on ESPN.

That might be a slight overstatement. The truth may be that the Broncos’ defense does have weaknesses, it’s just that no offense has been able to exploit those weaknesses yet.

But Denver still has dates with a couple of very good offensive teams, the Patriots and Bengals. Shut those teams down, and then the Broncos can crow about their defense not having any weaknesses.

  1. Look, it’s the latest dream team!

Let me guess, you guys are the new 85′ Bears too, just like the Bills were going into this season.

    SMH.

  2. O brother. Let’s blow this out of proportion now. He didn’t say they’re unbeatable or guarantee victories. The Broncos D is at or near the top in rush, pass, total yards, and points. They don’t have a weak area that they have to cover for. There’s nothing worng with his statement or having confidence. He knows it still comes down to execution. You gotta prove it every week.

  3. He might be right. Talib has shown the ability to shut down TEs in the past. That defense could go down as an all timer.

That said, Manning will try to play the hero and blow it for them in the playoffs or SB.

  4. Personally, I don’t like it when my team starts to sound complacent and satisfied.

The only time you should be happy with your performance is when you’ve won it all; until then, you’re still working to achieve your goal.

That said, that Denver D is really really good.

  5. “We really have no weaknesses. It’s really hard to say who you’re going to attack, who you’re going to go after.”
    _______________

Saying who you would attack would be stupid, doing it is another matter. Can’t help but feel there a couple of offenses out there that may find a weakness or two before all is said and done. Pump the brakes a little, even the ’85 Bears lost one. It was to one of the best pure passers the game has ever seen. Marino got the ball out so quick they couldn’t get to him often enough. If there was only someone like that in the league today…

  6. Depends who you ask.. If you as a guy like Teddy Bridgewater with the ability to get the ball out, diagnose coverages, and throw receivers open, then Denver’s defense can be beaten. If you ask a guy like Aaron Rodgers that checks down, throws screens all day, and pads his stats then yea Denver doesn’t have any weaknesses.

269 yards and a TD vs 77 yards. LOL.

  7. Pretty pumped for Denver’s overconfidence, terrible line backers, and totally disgusting offense line to cost their season. Its gonna be great to see the “bronco fan face”

  8. Yeah, we heard similar from the Bills, Jets and Dolphins and look what happened to them.

I agree, play the Pats and Bengals and hen let’s see where things stand.

Pats would have said “we still have things we need to work on”

  9. Don’t mistake best with healthiest. A couple of injuries like everyone else has changes the bravado.

  10. Looked pretty weak when Brady picked it apart last season.

The Cheaters pretty boy is 2-5 against Denver at Mile High. He did manage a win against Tebow I guess.
Most in Denver are far more concerned with a solid Bengals team that doesn’t have to cheat to win.
I’ll bet the NFL doesn’t sweep any locker rooms for bugs at Mile High either..

Your obsession with losing out on the Bills continues to show. I don’t think anyone said the Bills were a ‘dream team’. A lot of people thought they might contend for a wild card spot (which isn’t outlandish once they get their main offensive players back).

He just stated ‘they have no weaknesses’. This means, every unit (back, middle, front) of their D is good…a far reach from ‘dream team’. Also, they’ve played half a season, so there’s a sample set to base it on. The fact that they easily a top 3 defense, right now, lends itself to his statement.

  12. They’re playing great. We’ll see what the New England Patriots have to say about their weaknesses.

  13. Looking forward as a fan of neither team to tom brady trying to find a weakness on that defense. Seems like the most exciting matchup we have seen in the regular season in some time. If its not the highest ratings for a regular season game ever I will be surprised.

  14. Denver’s defense does have a weakness. It can’t tackle opposing defensive backs that pick off old noodle arm. Just wait til it gets cold.

  15. After Thanksgiving when the weather is cold & Peyton starts throwing those ducks, that def will be on the field more often & weaknesses will be discovered.

    Big difference.
It’s all well and good talking before the season…it needs to be backed up on the field though. They didn’t.
Harris is saying it when they have just shut down the league MVP for 77 yards passing.

  18. Tom Brady is a different type of quarterback than Rodgers. He gets the ball out quicker than anyone and has great possession receivers. Stopping Rodgers might not translate to stopping Brady. If they stop Brady, crown that defense and they will have earned it. Right now, it’s just talk.

Gave up 20 to the Vikings.

Gave up 23 to the Browns and needed OT.

Oh yeah, just like the SB a couple years back.

    Unbeatable.

    LOL

If you’re so smart you’d know that a number of those points came off of pick 6’s and short fields caused by Peyton’s turnovers. If it wasn’t for all of that they would be holding teams to about 13 points per game, but hey you’re smarter than you or yours

This is true. But Rodgers also has more tools than Brady. Brady runs his system to perfection, and gets the ball out when he’s supposed to. But, Rodgers is able to extend plays with his athleticism, and is equally as accurate. I guess it will come down to the secondary. Personally, I think Rodgers is a superior QB, but the Patriots have more mismatches for Denver to contend with (TE).

  22. This Bronco fan thinks you have a weakness: Overconfidence.

Furthermore, I think you ought to pitch a couple shut-outs before you claim greatness.

  23. How is the Denver defense the “exact same” when they ran a putrid Fox Del Rio 4-3 last year vs. Phillips 3-4 this year.

Fox wasted Ware and Miller’s talents and got fired for it.

  24. This team has never won a thing without major cheating violations. I’m sure they’ll fail again or we’ll find out later they paid players under the table again to circumvent the cap. Truth hurts, kids.

  25. Gave up 24 to the Chiefs.

7 of those were an interception return. The Chiefs had 314 total yards, 4 turnovers and were sacked 5 times on the night. The Broncos D also scored a TD and set up another TD with one of the turnovers. You could easily say the game was 17-14 Chiefs offense vs. Broncos defense in that game.

Gave up 20 to the Vikings.

Manning gave the Vikings 10 of those points with INT’s. The Vikings offense ended the day with 325 yards, were sacked 7 times (including on the final drive)

Gave up 23 to the Browns and needed OT.

There was another pick 6 in this game thrown by Manning. The Denver defense added a pick 6 of their own. The Browns had two long drives in the game. In OT, they had the ball first and ten inside Denver territory and were forced to punt. The Browns had 298 total yards.

    Unbeatable

He didn’t say they were unbeatable. He didn’t say they were not going to lose a game. He didn’t say the Broncos were better than the Patriots, Bengals or even the Chiefs. He stated the Broncos don’t have any weaknesses on defense and he’s right. The Denver D is first in yards allowed, first in passing yards allowed, fourth in rushing yards allowed, first in sacks, fifth in interceptions, first in forced fumbles, first in QB rating against, first by a mile in DVOA . . . . I could go on and on here.

I do notice, however, that in your hatred of Denver, you happened to forget about the 10 points the Raiders and Packers scored against them. Do those games just not fit in your narrative so you discounted them or were you so proud of your post you forget them?

The Broncos may lose and they may bomb out of the playoffs in round one. . . that isn’t going to change the fact that this defense is the best in the league.

  26. Well, that will be put to the test by Belicheck and Brady soon enough. I don’t think shutting down the packers this year carries quite the same weight as previous years, where the run game was clicking and they had a healthy stable of WRs. They are not nearly as explosive as last season.

That said, I think the Patriots are the only team that could consistently put together drives against the Broncos. (This is not the same as saying they are the only team who could beat the Broncos)

  27. Their one weakness is penalties. Too many penalties on 3rd down to extend drives is really the only thing (so far) that’s a big issue.

Well, now that I think about it more, it never really kills them. They get a dumb penalty and a few plays later they’re off the field or have created a turnover. THESE GUYS ARE SO FUN TO WATCH!!

Wade Phillips was not the defensive coordinator in Denver last season.

  29. I think it would be a great idea if all of the former players and talking heads, former coaches etc. would dedicate time to analyzing this and exploring what the possibilities are for successfully attacking a defense like this. It would make for great analysis and something we could all follow as the season unfolds. Who will be right? Who will solve the puzzle? Enquiring minds want to know! Come on ESPN! Fox Sports! PFT!

  31. over-inflated ego will get you every time. How about all the personal foul penalties that have extended opposing teams’ drives? 48 yd rushing TD by AP? Outside of the GB game, they’ve had some serious coverage breakdowns too – just lucky they weren’t playing QBs that were able to exploit them.

As a Denver fan, I am always worried about Indy games – no matter how bad the Colts are, the Broncos haven’t won in Indy for quite a few years (2003). Harris’ comments only make me more nervous.

    Hahahahahahahahaha
A Broncos fan making cheater comments???
7 PED/Substance suspensions just since ’12, they make the ‘Hawks look like choirboys. Fined almost $2M and lost draft picks for circumventing the salary cap, one of the beneficiaries of this ‘accounting mistake’ was their current GM. NE was accused of taping a walk through and the reporting paper later retracted the story, the Broncos actually did it and were fined for it. The list of Denver’s cheating accomplishments actually goes on and on but you get the point

  34. If Harris right then this presents a problem for all the Peyton manning apologists.

In the past, whenever Manning has choked in the playoffs, his apologists have always blamed someone else, usually the team’s defense. it’s always “well, if only Peyton had a good defense behind him” or “Peyton’s defense realy let him down”.

Okay. So if Denver’s defense is really that good, then what will Manning’s fan boys use for an excuse when he spits the bit in the playoffs?

  35. Shinbone,

You realize with your garbage defenses, yet again, you would have a hard time winning the Wisconsin 11 man high school state tournament.

I am a Pats fan and don’t recall hearing any disrespect or bravado coming out of the NFC’s NY team. In fact it always seems to be the yahoo portion of Patriot nation that is dissing the Giants. The facts speak for themselves, the Giants won those Super Bowls, they were the better team on those 2 Sundays. A little respect goes a long a way

  40. What was the questions leading up to that answer??? (Where would you say is a weakness in Denver’s defense?) What was he going to say, “Attack Roby, he’s slow on and bites on double moves”…? No, he said what anyone with a half way decent defense would say. Funny how that part of the conversation never makes it to print. You media clowns are great at spinning words. It’s all for a reaction, right?

I absolutely think they are paying guys under the table again. There is no way they fit all of those stars under the cap and STILL went after Joe Thomas.

    ——————————————————————-
Nice try. Who was Denver’s coach when they were caught video taping the walk through? Oh that is right it was NE wonder boy Josh McDaniels. Wonder where he learned that move?! Not to mention when Denver found out about it they reported it to the league and fired everyone that was involved. Still waiting for the Patritots to do the right thing and fire Belicheck for doing the same thing. I won’t hold my breath, Kraft would have no idea of how to go about doing the right thing! Poor Patriots always trying to play the victim.

  46. Denver better win it this year. Don’t think Osweiller can cut it next year. Injuries are one hurdle. Bad weather and Manning’s noodle arm equal another hurdle. Talib will pull up lame, probably week 17. Can you say one and done?

  47. Patriots have not lost to a Wade Phillips D since 2005. Remember Texans and their lettermen jackets coming into Gillete? 48-27.

  48. oughtta be comical watching Dion Lewis break multiple pairs of ankles on the Broncos D, and Gronk drag Harris and Talib into the endzone.

That is if Aquib the feeble isn’t injured for the game

  49. Pats fans are the biggest bandwagon trolls in the world. Just like with the Hardy bs, nothing ever happens. Kraft & Jones have the most what? Tuck rule? Enough said right there.

  50. Remember Tom Brady won’t sit back there like
Rogers did so you can sack him. He will make a quick and often right decision and use the short passing game to mitigate your rush. And frankly you’d better be historically good because as the season wears on Peyton’s noodle arm will be even less effective when it gets cold and windy.

  51. I just can’t bring myself to respect anything about the broncos defense until I hear a full explanation from Elway as to why he drafted Shane Ray despite his character issues with being charged with possession of marijuana and all a week before the draft. I expect no less than 5 articles in a week on the matter before I’ll be fully satisfied. I’d also like to know why he signed Demarcus Ware even though he was, according to Cowboy and Jerry Jones critics, washed up, injury prone, aging and unable to return to form (even though he’s still good.)

So, yeah… the Denver D started and ended the game with personal foul penalties (by members of the secondary). In between, Gore and Luck were productive running the ball up the middle. From now on, I’d hope when they’re asked about “weaknesses”, they’ll just say they have things they’re working on, but they’re not going to help the other teams out by spelling out what those things are.
