Lack of video preserves Hardy’s “second chance”

AP

When the Cowboys signed defensive end Greg Hardy, the Cowboys knew what he’d been accused of doing. Even if they hadn’t seen the photos of its aftermath.

Now, the Cowboys have the visual evidence. But with pictures only of the natural consequences of a large, athletic man assaulting a smaller, weaker woman, it’s easy for the Cowboys to reiterate, as owner Jerry Jones did on Friday night, that the team gave Hardy a “second chance,” and that the photos of the injuries are simply part of the second chance Hardy received.

Without video of Hardy actually doing what the Cowboys, the NFL, and everyone else now know he did, the Cowboys can continue to take the position that it’s all part of Hardy’s second chance. But if TMZ were to publish on Saturday video evidence of the assault that we know occurred, Jones would change his tune in a heartbeat.

That’s precisely what the Ravens did once video emerged of what the Ravens knew Ray Rice had done to his then-fiancée. He’d knocked her out. We knew he’d knocked her out. We were capable of imagining what a pro athlete knocking out a woman looked like. But without video it was easy to embrace Rice, as the Ravens did on their website after he received a two-game suspension.

Once the video came out, the Ravens cut him (even though they’d known what he did), the league suspended him again (but lost on appeal), and Rice thereafter has been shunned by the NFL.

In contrast, Adrian Peterson was embraced by the Vikings despite photographs of the injuries inflicted on his young son during a disciplinary session. With video of Peterson spanking a four-year-old boy until his skin broke and bled, the months of March through May wouldn’t have been about the Vikings persuading Peterson to give the team a second chance; Peterson would have been the one pleading for it.

Lack of video of the incident — even of an incident that we know happened — has become the key to obtaining a second chance. If, for example, there were video of Mike Vick drowning, electrocuting, and/or slamming to the ground dogs deemed unfit to fight other dogs, he never would have gotten a second chance with the Eagles or anyone else in 2009. Absent video, we know what he did but we don’t have to look at what he did, which allows the second chance to occur.

So Hardy still gets his second chance. If video were to emerge, the second chance would disappear.

But there isn’t and won’t be video, which makes it easier for the Cowboys to remain steadfast in their position to let him play. Even if they know what he did and are able to picture it. Without the actual pictures of it, they can get away with keeping him around.

  1. Everyone knew he was guilty of domestic violence. Putting his hand on her throat or slapping her around a bit would still be domestic violence. Seeing those pictures changed the story to me. And I only saw one, had no interest in seeing the rest after seeing one. If he slapped her a couple of times I could understand a second chance. To inflict as much damage as he did took a series of strikes that in no way should merit a second chance in the nfl. Go take your second chance at life with another career. Lucky for him there is always the Cowboys.

  2. Again…. Rice was being attacked. He was backed into a corner. In a closed elevator. He couldn’t escape.

If you’re going to say men and women are equal, and responsible for their actions… Then stop ignoring the facts.

She spit on him. Swung on him multiple times. Rice took one swing while backing up. That’s it! He didn’t ATTACK her. he took one swing to defend himself from behind attacked.

And that’s all in the video. But write your stories, storytellers.

  3. Ah, Dallas’ owner, president and GM – known to the wider world as the 3 greedy monkeys: Hear no evil, see no evil, and speak a load of horse dung.

  4. We need to stop pretending to be surprised or outraged when something like this happens. It’s an everyday occurrence in our country, and certainly not limited to the NFL. Anyone with enough money or connections to either afford a top lawyer, or, as in this case, buy their way out, walks. If Ray Rice had been closer to the beginning of his career instead of winding it down, we would see him on the field every Sunday. We see it every day in the treatment of corporate criminals who are only fined for their transgressions, and then allowed a tax deduction on that fine. Hardy is not an outlier; he is the way the system works, and we know it. So, yell about Jerry Jones, and scream about how vile Hardy is, and then look around your own town, and see who goes to jail and who walks.

  5. Ray Rice blackballed from a second opportunity and redemption because the self righteous media won’t allow it. Rediculous that NFL teams have been too scared to give the man a chance for fear of media backlash. That doesnt help Ray Rice’s wife who was the victim at all by keeping her husband from his profession

  6. Absolutely spot on. Sad but so ridiculously true. Shame on the cowboys and Jerry Jones on behalf of every woman who has ever suffered a man putting his hands on her in anger.

  7. Jerry Jones, the Cowboys organization, and most of all Greg Hardy are all disgusting low-lifes. How in hell do they have any female fans left is beyond me.

People should go after AT&T if they want anything to change. Jerry Jones will accept any transgression he legally can in order to keep a player he hopes will bring him just one more win. If there is an ISIS member out there who can play ball, just look Jerry up. He will certainly pay them and their cohorts to play and look the other way while they plan an attack.

  8. I agree 100%. Lack of video evidence and any logic within our judicial system preserved my second chance as well…..

    Regards,
    OJ

  9. 99% of people don’t know this but Greg Hardy was the one that called the cops that night. He can be heard frantically with the dispatch officer yelling “This ***** is going to kill me!”.

We love to talk about gender equality in this nation..

When an intoxicated woman puts her hands on a man in a room with guns and threatens HIM… What do you believe the result will be with a 280lb man fearing for his life?

Not to say Greg Hardy is absolved on all accounts but there are two sides to every story.. and if the Cowboys Organization believes they can help this young man keep from getting himself into poor situations in the future.. that is their right, and their will.

Who are we to say when someone does or does not deserve a second chance?

  10. Greg Hardy deserves any and all karma coming his way, as does the entire Cowboys organization. I don’t want to wish bad on any franchise, but when you’re as big of a pile as Hardy is…you deserve it.

  11. Given that Jerry Jones made an an $11M investment in Greg Hardy, I’m not buying that the Cowboys didn’t have access to the photos that Deadspin was able to access.

And the truth is … as long as Cowboy fans don’t care what happened, neither will Jerry Jones. When the news about Michael Vick hit the airwaves, fans let their ire be known. But no one in Dallas is burning Greg Hardy jerseys. It’s funny to me that people are more upset about what Vick did to his dogs than what Hardy did to his girlfriend.

As for me, I love NFL football. But I’m on the verge of breaking up with it.

  12. The Cowboys and Goodell and all the owners who support them have given Hardy a second chance to kill.

We need new owners and a commissioner who actually have integrity

  13. Skins had video of Junior Gallette, and signed him. NFL had video and failed to discipline him as well.

  14. All you preachy media leftists, I find it ironic how you are vilifying Greg Hardy relentlessly. However, nobody in the media cared when Bill Clinton or basically any Kennedy were doing the same thing – abusing women. He told Juanita Broaddrick “put some ice on that lip”. Yet, you still idolize Clinton…what gives?

  15. I don’t need a video to tell me Jerry Jones must also be a woman beater. That’s the only reason there can be. Football games are not that important.

  16. It makes it easier for Jones to rationalize away doing the morally corrupt thing in the name winning games.

  17. “Lack of video preserves second chance”?….More like “Lack of class on owners part”, or maybe “Desperation to win a ring without Jimmie Johnson”….

  18. Pretty soon there will be enough low life scumbags in the NFL to feild an entire team. Maybe they could have them play in Siberia and call the Siberian Scums.

So Ray Rice was the victim?!? Wow.

  20. Jerry Jones wouldn’t give a damn about video of the assault because Hardy is good at sacking opposing QBs.

    It’s as simple as that.

  21. So domestic violence is reduced to 4 game suspension. Ray Rice served a 1 year suspension for the same thing. And then there is Tom Brady who didn’t even let the air out of footballs and he gets 4 games. Help me make sense of this…

Roger Goodall’s silence on this is deafening and he really needs to go. I think fans that disagree with this need to boycott their sponsors. It sad that this is what you have to do, but that is the reality. Sadly, American Airlines already said they stand by the Cowboys! AT&T has yet to say anything

  22. Jones is as much a POS as Hardy. Would love to see if it was his daughter. All about the money with this guy. Bad owner.

  23. “Rice was being attacked. He was backed into a corner. In a closed elevator. He couldn’t escape.”

That’s a spineless little worm defense. Rice was many times her strength and got hit harder 50 times every Sunday than she ever could have hit him.

You, like Rice and Hardy, are just plain disgusting. None of these incidents has anything that can defend what the man did in them. None of them.

I’ve had a girlfriend get pissed and slap me and punch me a couple times I did not knock her out, I did not hit her.

  24. In every Ray Rice article over half the posters say he should be given another chance. These same people are now bashing Jerry only because we’re talking about America’s Team.

    Everyone deserves a second chance

    Everyone
    ————————-

So let’s say a guy kidnaps, rapes and murders a 5 year old child. You still think they deserve a second chance?

That person would fall into “everyone” in your self-righteous statement.

  27. So what is it people are suggesting? The case went through the legal system and was dropped – undoubtedly because she was paid off. Wealthy people work with a different legal system than most of us – apparently that’s news to a lot of people. The NFL suspended him with pay for all of last season and without pay for four games this season. He was punished.

I don’t doubt that Hardy is a scumbag. He’s one of many scumbags in the NFL. Are you saying he should never get a second chance? If so, I suspect you’re a self-righteous jackass. God help us all if that standard is applied universally. If not, what level of punishment would make you happy? That’s an honest question. This won’t be the last time some NFL player beats up his girlfriend/wife/ whatever. What standard of punishment do you think should apply? Four games isn’t enough – how about eight – or should it be a year long suspension?

  28. I love how everyone is so shocked about the photographs. We all knew what happened. Maybe if Greg Hardy murdered her and then threw away the suit he was wearing during it, Florio and company would be blowing him for being such a role model and a Hall of Famer. Oh wait, somebody already played that role…

  29. I’m tired of hearing if Ray Rice could still play he’d be in the league.. Rice was a top 5 RB for 5 years and helped his team win a Super Bowl. He got out of shape and injured in 2013 and had a bad year. So now 1 bad year to a guy that was a STUD (he and Marshall Faulk are the only RB ever to have multiple 2000 total yds in a season) and he can’t get a try-out. A try-out people. A try-out, not a job. The guy is clearly being blackballed because of a video. Look at some of the RB that have gotten looks and chances (pierce, Richardson, etc) BLACKBALLED

  30. Cowboy fans it’s time to show your disgust or that you’re a Jerry, what’s it gonna be? Boycott the home games, protest and otherwise make your voices heard and Jerry will be forced to cut the POS….otherwise you’re no better than Jerry himself

  31. If you need to see a video in order to understand the concept of assault or domestic violence then you are either willfully ignorant or hopelessly stupid. Yes, I am also talking about the idiots preaching “if there is no video then it didn’t happen”

  32. All you preachy media leftists, I find it ironic how you are vilifying Greg Hardy relentlessly. ————————————————————-
Let me say this very slowly so that your limited intellect can grasp it – YOU. ARE. AN. IDIOT.

  33. What’s with these stupid incidents and videos/pictures always coming out AFTER a ruling has happened it’s ridiculous than it starts up these conversations all over again.

I’m floored by this perception of the Ray Rice incident. Wow.

  35. I’m simply amazed that there are people defending Ray Rice and Greg Hardy in here. What on earth is wrong with you?

  36. “Really surprised Jones hasn’t signed Rice too.”

    _________________________________________

Believe me, if he felt like Rice was someone who could help him score just one more win, then Rice would be on his roster. If Aaron Hernandez were to get out of prison on a technicality tomorrow, Jerry would hire him Monday.
The sad thing is that many Cowboys fans would be happy about it. That is why there is the culture in the NFL.

The market will only support what investors will tolerate. Same with the NFL. If fans stop showing up, if London were to say that they didn’t want to import this culture into theirs, then things would change.

The NFL has wet dreams about going international. If you want the NFL to change, then risk of losing that would do it.

We are the paying public. At the end of the day sports is entertainment, and entertainment is big busine$$. If Greg Hardy turns more stomachs than dollars then his second chance becomes cost prohibitive. It remains to be seen if that will happen but make no mistake it’s we, the paying public, that will drive that decision. That’s what’s happened with Ray Rice, heck with Mel Gibson for that matter, too much ri$k for too little potential reward.

Greg Hardy didn’t earn a ‘second chance’ he bought it and it worked but even that wasn’t enough, he went further. Adding insult to injury he got the record expunged so it can’t be used against him when he does it again. I despise Michael Vick but he at least did his time and in so doing earned his second chance. Hardy wants to say it didn’t happen so kiss his azz . He hasn’t earned it, that is why the me part of we feels like he doesn’t deserve it

  38. I am disgusted with Dallas management / Jones ! Looking for ways to boycott Cowboys anyway I can. The league should step in and do something.

  39. There’s video of Hardy assaulting a coach, and of making creepy comments about another player’s wife.

  40. Not one of these comments even discusses domestic abuse. It’s take on average 6xs for women of violent crime to even try to get out of the situation. Most don’t even want to report it for fear of repercussions from their attacker. Can anyone who has not been in that situation even understand why they stay? I don’t think so. It’s so easy to sit here behind your keyboards and slam the victims or the system. But the reality is that sure Hardy should get a second chance, just not in the NFL, where it is a privilege to play. He is one of many players who represent the league and he is not a product that should be bought.

  41. As a part of the Cowboys Greg Hardy represents the team, just like the idiot who beat up the Uber driver represented Taco Bell and it didn’t take them 24 Hrs to fire that guy.

If the next girl gets killed Jerry, you enabled this guy and that is 100% on you! The fans and the league have been very clear we don’t want people like this playing!

Hope all the $$$ you make is worth it and it doesn’t turn into blood money.

  42. So a guy can murder dogs within his dog fighting ring (which caused dogs to basically kill or severely hurt other dogs) and he deserves a second chance.

A guy can drive drunk and kill someone and he deserves a second chance.

A guy can beat his 3 year old with a stick and he deserves a second chance.

But a guy pushing or hitting a woman should basically be banned from the league and perhaps even executed.

What idiocy and shows how p-whipped this pathetic society has become. I am not saying it is okay to hit women (although if a woman hits you first then she is fair game just like if a man hits you first he is fair game) but the way people act like hitting a woman is the worst crime ever is beyond absurd. The 3 crimes listed above are worse than hitting a woman and Ben Roethlisberger has probably raped at least two women and got away with it (he did get suspended 4 games for it) and it’s apparently also OK.

    Hit women= bad
    Rape women= good

    Brilliant!

By far the most ignorant comment I have seen yet and I’ve seen some beauty’s. This allegedly intelligent poster obviously never saw that tape and is clearly from a DNA pool of subhumans. HE spit on her! That’s why she came at him. She DIDN’T attack him! He knocked her out cold! You are a complete fool and are not to be taken seriously except that I fear you may be a man who probably treats woman the way Rice and Hardy do. Beat the living crap out of them and blame the woman. Pathetic P.O.S.

Who are we to say when someone does or does not deserve a second chance?

Are you a Cowboy fan or Domestic assault fan?
If you bothered to read the entire article, not just the one sentence that supports your case you would know that he called to blame the victim before she could ( a very typical action from habitual abusers) The scum bag probably got scratched by his victims desperate flailing arms as she was being grabbed by the throat so the animal could slam her a bed of 25 assault weapons which were used to threaten her life if she told anyone (also a tactic used by repeat offender abusers)
BTW Still lost three in a row, giving up average 23.5 pts per game with this piece of human garbage, Ticking time bomb not worth defending.
Jerry Jones has accomplished absolute ZERO without Jimmy Johnson

  45. I wish there was a video because my interpretation of the police report and photographs doesn’t prove at all Hardy was responsible for all those injuries.

The woman was WASTED. She’d been drinking for over 8 straight hours. His version said she exploded and started acting crazy. His friend tried to restrain her.

If anyone’s who been that drunk knows, you don’t feel pain (even if you are doing it to yourself). Could she have been completely crazy wacko and done a lot of that damage to herself? Absolutely.

I’m not saying Hardy is innocent. He’s not. I’m sure some (not all in my opinion) of her injuries were by his hand. And the guns on the couch thing is just plain wanna-be gangster mentality.

But I’ve seen crazy drunk women go completely bonkers and there is no doubt a woman could have numerous DRI’s (drinking related injuries) that she has no recollection of how they got there.

  46. There is photographic evidence of what Peterson did. That’s why I don’t get his acceptance. One could make the case that AP’s transgression was worse than Rice’s since it was against a four year old.

  47. Every reporter who covers the Cowboys should begin every interview with every player, coach and team official with the following questions: Have you viewed the horrific photos of the brutal beating Greg Hardy inflicted on his girlfriend with the women in your life – like your wife, your daughters and your mother? What does your wife think about the photos? How about your daughters? And, your mom?

This should continue until Jerry Jones does the right thing and cuts Hardy.

  48. This is Jerry Jones’ finest moment. Lack of a video means that nothing happened. Let’s get Greg Hardy lots of great pink accessories to show his genuine commitment to women’s causes. He is a truly great Cowboy leader who knows how to get away with it.

  49. And now you see why Jerry Richardson would have nothing to do with trying to bring him back.

Yeah, unless you count Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, LaDainian Tomlinson and Thurman Thomas.

And Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, OJ Simpson and Walter Payton.

And Eric Dickerson, Terrell Davis, Edgerrin James and Tiki Barber.

Then, yeah, they are totally the only two.

Except for William Andrews and Roger Craig.

  51. for once i agree with Jones. they fully know what he did wrong, seeing pictures shouldn’t change anything. what cause now you see visuals makes you think less of him than when it was common knowledge what he did. you hear your spouse cheats on you and you take him/her back but than 12 weeks later you see a video of it than say whoa whoa thats disgusting were over! take a hike. yes hardy is a punk but cowboys want to give him a second chance. these pictures don’t change anything. now if this was a 2nd incident that wasn’t reported until now than absolutely they should cut him.

  52. fatsolio you’re the pathetic moron who commented on another story claiming it’s okay for a man to hit a woman if she hits him first. Like really?? What kind of a man are you? I’ll tell you, you aren’t one.. I’m sure you’re like the other losers on here who are defending Ray Rice.. Morons…

  53. Thought of the Boys today. Drove by a business that had a sign hanging in the window “WE HIRE FELONS AND ARE PROUD OF IT!”. JJ needs to hook up with these guys.

  54. Can we expect months of stories now about this incident? Of course not, football is being played. We heard about Rice for months because it was the offseason. Media controls public opinion. It is an abused power.
