Packers want to get things going for Eddie Lacy

Running back Eddie Lacy was slowed by a groin injury in Sunday’s loss to the Panthers, but coach Mike McCarthy said that Lacy felt well enough to get in a full workout on Monday and that he could be fine to practice on Wednesday.

Health has been an issue for Lacy all season. He hurt his ankle early in the year and McCarthy said Lacy was still banged up around the team’s bye week when discussing the running back’s drop in production this season. Things haven’t really picked up since then, leading to more work for James Starks and a focus on trying to get Lacy pointed in the right direction from the coaching staff.

McCarthy said that there are things Lacy is “not doing very well right now” and that the team is working to correct them. Running backs coach Edgar Bennett said that Starks has earned the bump in playing time, but that the team needs more from Lacy as well.

“Eddie, he’ll have more opportunities,” Bennett said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I guess yesterday was really more injury-related than anything else. We’ve definitely got to get him going.”

Lacy has just 308 yards on 83 carries this season, which is way off from what the Packers expected from him. If injuries are slowing him down, it might be best for Lacy to sit for a bit to make sure he’s healthy down the stretch. If health isn’t the issue, it may be harder for the Pack to find the best way to get him back on track while also going with the players who give them the best chance to win.

  1. Tell him to lose 10 lbs, seriously though.

He’s gotten bigger and slower, and his production has dropped.

Leveon Bell has lost 20 lbs since coming into the NFL, and has only gotten better. Size helps, but speed kills. Granted he did suffer an ACL, that can happen to anyone.

  2. Feastmode needs to ride the bench. He is following the career of Trent Richardson, although Richardson hits the hole faster…

  3. He needs to mix in a salad and he’s a bust. It’s laughable, a year ago, Packer fans comparing him to Adrian Peterson. When Eddie has 10,000 yards, which won’t happen, get back to me.

  4. Edgar Bennett hasn’t been the RB coach in nearly 5 years. He’s been promoted twice since then and is now the OC.

  5. Why? James Starks is clearly playing wwwaaaayyyyyy better at the moment. I have zero concerns about Starks carrying the load from here on out.

  6. Eddie just looks slow out there. I know GB says weight isnt an issue, but he sure looks a lot bigger than two years ago.

  7. The fact that he’s facing a defense that’s willing to give the RB room to work in order to try and stop the QB and his numbers are still regressing along with the coach’s comments lead me to believe his issues are preparation related.

  8. “McCarthy said that there are things Lacy is ‘not doing very well right now’”

…..like avoiding the local Old Country Buffet on a daily basis

  9. Toss a rubber cheeseburger upfield 10 yards every time he touches the ball.

Sorry friends…….he’s too fat to be consistent.

  10. Starks is the man. I liked them using Ripowski out of the back field as well. We need to mix up the play calling, too.
I’m a Lacy fan, you can’t deny he was a beast last year. But whatever is up with him has to be solved.

  11. “Maybe he just never really was all that good?”

He had career highlights and the purple people last year. Don’t you remember him steam rolling your Defense???

  12. It ain’t rocket science — get the guy in shape and he’ll likely stay healthier and return to his previously above-average NFL RB production levels. The Pack has a decent enough O-line and an MVP QB (to threaten the pass) to open plenty of space for a good RB.

He will be in a food coma when he plays the Vikings

  14. Man Packers will use any excuse to cover a loss. Don’t even go there Cheese Heads. So you couldn’t use Jones, because Benjamin was out. OK last year compare ijured Cam, Olsen, Tolbert, Stewart, Norman.

They put the Packers in a hole faster than the Broncos. Give the Panthers credit and now you guys sit 3 games behind the Panthers and you won’t play us again in the playoffs. Your defense can’t handle it. Packers have been figured out and it will be exploited the rest of the season. Note, QB Aaron Rogers gets happy feet and makes poor decisions under the kind of pressure the Panthers put on him. 5 sacks in one game. Cam 0 sacks. Packers defense has been exposed. A grind game by teams that gets physical wears youry defense down and keeps Rogers benched. Packers might want to look at oline again. 5 sacks Wow!

Nov 22nd… once he trucks a purple DB… again, we’ll see who’s laughing.

    ******************************

Eddie Lacy, meet Linval Joseph. Yes, we will see who is laughing.

  16. Eddie Lacy has been injured and banged up all season long.

He won’t return to his normal 1,100 yard seasons until he gets healthy again.

For now, Starks can carry the load.

  17. I knew the classless purple people would be all over this article. We are not worried. He always does better in the 2nd half of the season. I just want him to get healthy for a run in December.

    Not with Thanksgiving coming up

  19. Lacey has put on too much weight or muscle. He is not the Bus – he is a smasher with some quick feet and that has not been apparent this year. He kind of reminds me of AJ Hawk after his first season when he bulked up and then couldnt run. I fear that he may not be as productive this year and we may need to rely more on Starks and use Lacy for the smaller crash the line runs. The coaching/training staff has missed the boat on what his offseason targets should have been. It will take a better more weight and speed focused offseason for him to regain prior year’s form.

  20. arianal1985 always claimed Ted Thompson was the best GM in the NFL, and wished he had come to Minnesota instead of Green Bay. I remember.

  21. Lacy looked pretty fast maybe 4.2 40 yard dash speed when he stole that Quarter Pounder from McCarthy on the sidelines as McCarthy was just about to take a bit. That is why he benched Lacy.

  22. Lacy is just following in his coach’s footsteps. To the best two restaurants in town, Applebee’s. He likes Green Bay West better. Me, too, but the dumpster gets crowded on Saturday nights.

  23. for a team that prides itself on a ‘draft only’ philosophy they might want to start thinking outside the box. this guy was a 2nd rd pick 2 years ago, their 3rd round pick last year is on his 3rd team and a lot of 1st rounders aren’t panning out. just sayin’

for the 2013 draft class only Bakhtiatri is working out, and he was a 4th rounder. Micah Hyde is ‘ok’. Barrington was a steal in the 7th until injured.

for the 2012 draft class only Mike Daniels and Casey Hayward are working out, and for some reason Thompson is playing hard ball in resigning Daniels.

for the 2011 draft class I think only Randall Cobb is on the roster

last years Clinton-Dix is decent at best, but at least they got a starter in Linsley. Davante Adams is nothing without better WRs around him

There may be some truth in what you’re saying. As I said before, imagine how much more dominantly the Packers would own the Vikings if more of their draft picks worked out.

  25. agreed. of the christian ponder tamp 2 vikings. things change.

somehow thompsons’ green bay rodgers are like 26-4 against the nfc north. weird. with that terrible drafting.

wouldn’t you guys rather lose out, get a top 15 pick and come back next year with Jordy. ur just going to get embarrassed in the postseason again vs carolina or arizona

No. That would be too similar to the Vikings MO. You know, always the best draft picks but never doing anything with them. I would rather take our lumps with draft picks that may or may not work out, send in the Next Man Up year after year, and always have a chance in postseason instead of no chance at all. All any team can ask for is a chance…….unless they don’t qualify for the postseason.
