Tim Hasselbeck: My brother played well, but he’s a 40-year-old backup

No NFL analyst knows Colts quarterback Matt Hasselbeck better than his brother, former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck. And Tim was refreshingly candid today when assessing the news that Matt has to step in and start for the injured Andrew Luck, potentially for up to six weeks.

Tim Hasselbeck said on ESPN this afternoon that he thinks it’s going to be awfully tough for his brother, at 40 years old, to hold up to the pounding of six weeks as a starting quarterback.

“They have a 40-year-old backup that maybe has to play for six weeks, get you all the way to Week 16 of the NFL season before you potentially get Andrew Luck back,” Hasselbeck said. “I know my brother played well in the two games he started this season, but I think anyone can attest . . . it’s one thing when it’s a shorter injury and you have a backup that’s going to play one week, two weeks, three weeks maybe. We’re in a situation where they have a 40-year-old quarterback that’s potentially going to play half of their football games this year. Half of them!”

It’s not impossible to play the quarterback position past age 40: Brett Favre had a very good season at 40, Doug Flutie played pretty well at 41, Warren Moon played pretty well at 42, and Vinny Testaverde was still hanging on at 44. But Tim Hasselbeck is right that those players are the exception, rather than the rule.

The Colts are hoping that Matt Hasselbeck can prove to be another exception. But in case he’s not, they’d better find another backup quarterback. Maybe Tim Hasselbeck is interested.

  1. TB12 > Andrew Luck

Somebody please tell me what Luck has done that we should care who he is?

He can barely win outside his sorry division.

    Enough of Luck.

He’s done nothing to interest anyone yet.

  2. His brother might be candid, but it’s going to be pretty quiet around the old Thanksgiving table this month, if they share the holidays together.

Of course, if Matt plays as well as he did in those other two games, there just might be a lot of trash talking from him to Tim–something like, “I’m taking the drumstick to score!!”

  3. Colts should have gotten Flynn as back up to Hasselbeck. Why I say that, Flynn and Hasselbeck very similar skill sets
It’s just a matter of time until Hasselbeck gets very banged up

  4. Tim Hasselbeck: My brother played well, but he’s a 40-year-old backup

Tim have you seen who’s under center in today’s NFL? A third of the teams out there are starting guys that aren’t as good as your 40 year old backup QB brother.

  5. 1st off…Timmy Hasselbeck talks like he is some kind of important ex player…and he was not. In fact his IQ level quite low.

His brother old enough to speak for himself…and hoping he does well enough to get Colts into playoffs…and back to NE.

The CURSE OF DEFLATEGATE…will continue, and Pagano, Irsay, and Grigson..will continue to pay dearly.

  6. At this point, does it matter who starts for the colts? They’re not going to do anything noteworthy…the players are just waiting for their long vacation and finding out who is going to coach them next year.

  7. Hey could you guys squeeze in another Rex Ryan article before I knock off from work for the day?

  8. Just get the ball out quickly and don’t take hits. If he does that he can make it. Same plan he had to win the 2 games he won.

He only really has to be the Texans and Jags and then Luck will be back to beat the Titans. 7 wins and 6-0 in the division would wrap it up most likely.

  9. As a Patriots fan and a fan of football it is with complete honesty and respect that I say, Andrew Luck is a true leader and real football man. On the other hand Little Timmy could never fill his older brothers shoes from high school thru college into the pros.

  10. Ryan Mallet is available 🙂

So is Geno Smith. Just come and get him and leave a donation at the front office.

  11. Matt’s not that much older than Peyton or Tom. Difference is, his body has taken a lot less pounding over the past 4 or 5 years, so the old man should be fine.

His two games in relief this year has shown that he’s still got some very valuable skills.

    Like, not throwing interceptions…

  12. I like the Hasselbeck family, but he’s being paid $3,000,000.

That’s a lot of money for a back-up. Now shut-up and play like one.

  13. Smart move, managing expectations. Promise less, deliver more. It’s the polar opposite of the Rex Ryan style.

  14. Keep talking about all the money the Ravens wasted on Flacco. All he does is Play every game, never throws his teammates under the bus, rarely loses a game for his team, does all the right things, wins more playoff games that just about anyone other than Brady and is a Superbowl MVP!!! Hall of Fame Credentials Fellas!!!

Luck is good but it consistency is key to NFL teams and flacco provides that year in and year out. CANT HELP THE CLUB IF YOUR IN THE TUB!!

He’s down this year but he’ll be back like he always is. BALLER!

I don’t think the article mentioned TB12 or the Patriots for that fact. Yet some people wonder why NE fans are the most annoying bunch in the NFL

Give me a BREAK. What a typical ignorant comment about sports.
Because Tim Hasselbeck was not a ‘great” QB, you dismiss what he has to say?

    What an idiotic statement.

And what the He** do YOU know about his IQ for crying out loud?

Geez, the guy was a star in HS, college, and good enough to make the NFL and play, and somehow YOU know more about his brother and football than him.

This board makes me want to puke sometimes… really it does.

And this year we see what it’s done for the rest of the roster

    Mariota > Luck

  19. If Hasselback goes down they’ll have no options that would qualify as a good option for even a single start.

And if either Houston or Jacksonville could even vaguely get their act together Indy will lose the division and not make the playoffs.

  20. George Blanda played till the age of 48, although the last 5 was as a kicker. Still, he was the oldest QB ever to play in a championship game.

  21. Quoting intrafinesse:
“So is Geno Smith (available). Just come and get him and leave a donation at the front office.”

You seem like a nice person, so I’ll make you a sweet deal, even though I’m taking a loss.

Leave Smith and a donation just outside the office and we’ll come haul him away for you.

Tim Hasselbeck….is/was a punk….So was his father. Both have/had big mouths…as anyone w/an IQ can see by the garbage ESPN pays him to state daily. Guy is as phony as they come.

Timmy…has this thing for Tom Brady….talks about him like he’s inferior…to him. Was good in HS, average in college…and horrible in pros.

  23. The real question is what has Tim ever done to warrant having a national voice other than being Matt’s brother.

He would be little more than a trivia question if it weren’t for being related to Matt.

  24. It’s not necessarily true that QBs over 40 who still have NFL jobs being successful is the “exception rather than the rule”.

Yes- there are very few QBs over 40 in the NFL, for obvious reasons. But your statement would seem indicate that most QBs who are still playing after 40 play poorly.

My point would be that you have to be pretty good to still be getting contracts after 40, and that most 40+ QBs are in fact competent, otherwise no team would bother to keep them around.

If you want to look for reasons that Hasselbeck might not be able to play well and/or hold up for six weeks, don’t look at his age, look at his offensive line.

    TEBOW!!! isn’t 40+!
    ======

32 out of 32 teams would take Matt Hasselbeck over Tim Tebow. That’s why he has a job and Tebow doesn’t.

Heck, half the teams in the league would probably take TIM Hasselbeck over Tebow, and some would probably take Elisabeth Hasselbeck over Tebow.

  26. First I’ve heard about Luck, that’s pretty brutal, but 6 weeks is not too bad considering Keenan Allen is gone for the season due to the same injury. Maybe they should look at Ponder. He may be noodle armed, but they play in a dome and he’s not an idiot.

  27. Tim hasselback is worst qb analyst out there. Logic is incomprehensible and usually wrong and off point. He has personal vendettas against certain players that’s very evident.

  28. The Colts will be alright. They’ve had the most injuries of any NFL team over the last three years, but they somehow always manage to find guys and go 11-5. I think they’ll win the last 7 games. They have a great front office that knows how to win.

  29. Grigson takes some heat for some of his decisions. He probably isn’t a top 5 GM, but he definitly isn’t as bad as alot of people say. There were alot of people in the Indianapolis Star during preseason calling for Hasselback to be cut because he underperformed in preseason. Thankfully, Grigson held onto Matt. I’m really glad he has stepped up with some good QB play when opportunity presented itself

  30. I’ll take a 40 something year old Matt Hasselbeck
to a 25 year old Curtis Painter every time.
