Browns rule Bitonio out; Whitner and Haden still in concussion protocol

The Browns have already ruled starting left guard Joel Bitonio out of Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh due to an ankle injury, and it looks like starting defensive backs Joe Haden and Donte Whitner will miss another game due to concussions. Both remain in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The team’s official injury and participation report Wednesday listed quarterback Josh McCown (ribs) and safeties Jordan Poyer (shoulder) and Ibraheim Campbell (hamstring) as limited. Campbell, a rookie, started in place of Whitner last week.

First-round rookie Cam Erving will make his first career start at left guard in place of Bitonio.

The McCown or Johnny Manziel decision, which has become a weekly occurence, probably won’t be made by Browns coach Mike Pettine until Friday. McCown told reporters he’s still sore but optimistic he’ll be able to play Sunday.

Being down defensive backs against the talented Steelers’ receiving corps is obviously not a good thing, though the Steelers are expected to have to play Landry Jones at quarterback. Ben Roethlisberger did not practice Wednesday and should miss at least one game due to a foot injury.

The Steelers also practiced without running back DeAngelo Williams, as expected. Williams has a foot issue and though he’s expected back at practice Thursday, Jordan Todman is next in line if he’s limited Sunday.

  1. I just can’t get over year in and year out how dysfunctional the Browns are. It just seems like the NFL is paying them to be this bad

  2. Every day I wake up hoping to read on here that Farmer and/or Pettine have been fired…

  3. Nothing is going to get sorted out in Cleveland until there is some sort of stability, and consistency. Nobody seems to be there long enough to get a program in place, and the team hasn’t really had an identity since they rejoined the league.

This from a Steeler fan, pining for the good ol’ days of Steelers/Browns being the only regular season game that mattered!

  4. Jimmy Haslem obviously pays very little attention to the team until someone sends him a message that the season has ended.

Landry Jones isn’t very good but without Haden i’m not sure the Browns can stop Pukesburgh from winning this one. Landry can throw 4 yard passes all day and let Miller and Brown turn them into 44 yard gains. Could be a long day for the Brownies especially if they can’t get the offense sparked.

  5. I’m confused how your 1st round offensive lineman is just now seeing snaps and only because its due to an injury. Our line hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire with their run or pass blocking. I don’t understand how he doesn’t get in on certain packages with more than 5 lineman so we can maybe gain more than 2 yards in a carry. Just another reason why Pettine is in over his head and shouldn’t be a head coach.

  6. Pettine and his Pennsylvania Pop Warner/high school coaches wouldn’t know talent if Otto Graham and Jim Brown walked right up to them. They’re in over their heads.
