James Starks, not Eddie Lacy, now the Packers’ No. 1 back

AP

James Starks is officially the Packers’ No. 1 running back.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy told reporters today that the team views Starks, and not Eddie Lacy, as the top back heading into Sunday’s game against the Lions.

“I would say James is our No. 1 back right now going into Detroit,” McCarthy said. “He’s earned that opportunity. We’ll stay with a 1-2 punch.”

That’s a disappointment for Lacy, who has started seven games this year and not long ago was viewed as one of the best running backs in the NFL. But it’s hard to argue against the move, given the players’ production this year: Starks has 78 carries for 334 yards, while Lacy has 83 carries for 308 yards. Neither player has been great this year, but Starks has been better.

Lacy has also been battling injuries, and it might make sense for the Packers to reduce his workload until he’s 100 percent healthy.

The Packers are on a two-game losing streak, so it’s no surprise that McCarthy wants to make some changes. With the Lions coming to town, it’s a safe bet that the Packers will get back on track on Sunday.

  1. Oh no. We are so on the decline now. I’ll stay drunk until January, at least.

  2. They should close down Green Bay West Applebee’s. That might save Eddie. Or not.

  3. That’s a shame for Lacy, but he’ll be back in time for the postseason…….better than ever.

Even arianal1985 said the same thing. I remember him saying it.

  4. Eddie Lacy has been overrated from the start, the guy had like one 1,000 yard season and the media and Packer fans acted like he was Jim Brown. Smart move by McCarthy to finally look at the results not the hype.

  5. They have been splitting carries all year anyways, so I don’t think this will change much other than who starts on the first series.

  6. Lacy is a big strong man but he looks like he is packing at least an extra 20-30 lbs of fat on his frame. James Starks explodes through holes while Lacy looks indecisive and slow.

I think it was the Panthers game where they did a close up on the field of him talking to one of his offensive lineman and my honest thought was “Wow he is almost the same size”.

A professional not being in shape other than serious injury, there is no excuse.

Is this how long a RB can play in this league before his productivity starts to decline?
    —————————————————

    Alfred Morris says yes.

  8. He has been injured, he has had ankle and groin issues, and while I understan you should get out there and put it to the test, if your trying to play week to week, you may take it a bit easier, and is hurting his and the teams production.

Get healthy, come back and be the great RB people know you can be.

  9. Lacy has been battling injuries… AND DROPPING THE SPOON… He has visibly put on table muscle and just looks slow…

Most backs try to drop weight to get through hole fast and quick. Lacy simply hasn’t the speed anymore and his extra bulk is only good for another half a yard on every other carry…

And he used to be such a great runner to watch.

  10. The packers are playing a team with a losing record this week, so they will have a chance. It’s those winning teams that they can’t handle.

So can we officially label Lacy a bust?
    ==================================
Considering that his first two years have been good, and he’s having a poor third year, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

That would be like calling a Bridgewater a bust because he followed a decent first season by struggling this year, 8 games into the season.

Perfect example as to not draft a RB in the 1st round. Just ask Melvin Gordon.

    ——————————————————

And then go ask Todd Gurley…

  14. Avoid drafting:

    – QBs from the entire state of Florida

    – QBs from USC

    – QBs under Urban Meyer

    – Running backs from Alabama

The Packers had their chance last year and it ended in epic choke fashion. Soft team with a soft QB and coaching staff
    ===================================
So what you’re saying is that the Vikings are an even softer team with a softer QB and coaching staff, seeing as that they lost to the Packers twice and couldn’t even make the playoffs, let alone get to the NFC Championship game.

  16. Ha! what a waste of a pick…..they will never find a decent RB…..

    ——

Wow that’s a lot of football ignorance in one story. Of course it’s all from MN fans so it’s understood, but c’mon, the guy was ROY his first year, then backed it up with just as good of a second year. 2 thousand yard seasons with double digit td’s and mn trolls call him a bust because this year has started poorly for him. And he was a 2nd rd pick, not a first.

  17. injury issues should be replaced with being overweight. He should talk with Le’von Bell on off season conditioning otherwise he will not be in the league for much longer.

  18. Not surprising. Eddie don’t run, he waddles. The Packers just need another rule change in the NFL… a Mcdonalds in every end zone. Nobody could stop him!

  19. If only MN had picked him up then he could play for a team with multiple sb wins and 5 playoff berths in a row. Oh wait, that’s not true at all, he’d be playing for perennial bottom dwellers with no playoff wins in 6 years, only 4 berths since 2000 and no championships at all. Doesn’t stop you guys from running your mouth though…..

  20. Eddie Lacy hasn’t had below 1,000 yards in a season yet (2013 and 2014). So I wouldn’t go labeling anyone a bust just yet. He also hasn’t had to sit out a full year for beating small children.

Eddy doesn’t even come close to some others we could talk about. He was a second rd pick. At least we didn’t give up a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th round pick to get him. And that guy hasn’t had over 500 yards receiving yet. And it helped NE win a SB!

Can’t believe some fans have anything to say, at all.

  21. When Eddie gets healthy it won’t matter if it’s a one two punch or a two one punch. It will be effective by the time December rolls around……

  22. What in the world has happened to Eddie Lacey and Alfred Morris? For that matter, Marshawn Lynch has only contributed significantly to one game. That’s three guys who used to dominate.

  23. He’s had 2 awesome years (including 1 Offensive ROY award) and vike fans are trying to tell us he’s a bust because his production has dropped off this year as he’s battled a couple of injuries?

Is there any fanbase that demonstrates less football knowledge than vike fans? I don’t think so.

A Vikings fan should know first hand the definition of a bust by just looking at Corduroy Patterson.
    _______

Patterson is a bust, even though he had a Pro Bowl rookie season. I guess I expect more than two good seasons from a high draft pick.

  25. LOL the Pack loses two road games and they are considered done. They will steam roll through the rest of the schedule all the way to the Super Bowl.

  26. Lev Bell? He’s made of glass. The best ability is availability. Don’t think Steelers fans have room to throw him up to Pac fans. At least Lacy is available.

    ********************************************
He also came into the season looking more like a Offensive guard then a running back, seriously he must be about 260 lbs and i would guess the extra weight is the reason for injury problems, ie groin, kankle ect.

  30. Lacy is the same back he always was, but teams are stacking the box more often because of injuries in the passing game, especially the loss of Jordy Nelson. The run game will improve now that Davante Adams is back on the field, and Lacy and Starks will provide an effective 1-2 punch come playoff time.

Lacy was drafted at the end of the second round. He has had two good seasons and hasn’t been having a good season this year.

I can’t think of an NFL executive or player personnel guy who would think a player is a bust after two good seasons and half of a bad one, without even seeing how he comes back from a poor season after two years of good production.

  37. A lot of athletes have ate their way out of their professions. Just watched that doc about boxing last night on one of the major networks and the name Buster Douglas seems to have a possible correlation here with Lacy. Already big RB’s don’t need to gain more weight.

There are 4 RB’s in the Top 10 that are 30 or over.

And based only on his play one of the best when he’s done. You’re not getting any argument from this Packer fan. The only thing I will ask all of the Packer trolls that came into Viking threads time and time again saying how Eddie Lacy was so much better than Adrian Peterson what are your thoughts of this benching? Let’s face it. Lacy has not been the stud you all said he was. He had a few decent games here and there and probably will have more throughout his career. But for those of you that claimed he was more talented on the football field as Peterson, all I’m going to say is you’re wrong.

My hope is everyone can come into threads and talk intelligent football instead of spewing the same stupid crap out of your keyboards every day. Doesn’t that make PFT a much better place?

Hey Stafford and Calvin could resurect there careers Sunday at lambeau feasting on the dbacks on this team.

Its really a toss up. Lions O line sucks, and the packers O line hasn’t been a lot better. Lions Pass D is horrid but so is the Packers. It really comes down to the pass rush. The team with the better pass rush wins and it very well could be the Lions. The Packer wheels start to fall off after that. Heck even the coaches will be fighting on the sidelines

  46. As a Bama fan I’m loving me some Derrick Henry this year but I also wonder if he’s not going to have about the same level of success (or lack thereof) as Lacy when he gets to the next level.

  47. When healthy Le’Veon Bell >> Lacy. It is really not all that close too.

(Gotta love the clueless poster who claims Bell is fragile like glass. Uh, getting injured the way he was injured is far from being due to fragility. smh at clueless football fans.)

Actually, Bell’s a pretty standup guy — go look at how he dealt with some racist moron on Twitter the other day.

Re: the pot thing, who cares — most Americans don’t care (it’s 2015, not 1945) and it’s been legalized in multiple jurisdictions across the country. I wonder if you’re equally critical of the guys on whatever team you follow that use it (perhaps you have a different standard for guys who don’t get caught).

Re: the injuries, guessing you didn’t see the play causing the MCL injury? Watch the video — anyone experiencing that kind of trauma will sustain some kind of injury unless they’re made of rubber.

Bottom line: he’s one of the best dual-threat rushing/receiving backs in the NFL. His injuries come because of how much the Steelers use him and his style of play. There are ways to mitigate some of that (e.g., balancing their rushing attack a little more — Williams was hardly used once Bell’s suspension ended), but not sure I can think of a better example of who most teams would want for the long haul.
