Manning benched two quarters after setting NFL record

AP

From record holder to clipboard holder. That’s Peyton Manning’s Sunday.

Manning broke the NFL’s all-time passing yardage record with his first completion of the day. But with the Broncos trailing the Chiefs 22-0 and Manning having thrown 4 interceptions, he was benched in the third quarter.

Brock Osweiler took over at quarterback.

Manning was 5-of-20 for 35 yards before the benching. His quarterback rating was 0.0.

The Broncos started 7-0 but are on their way to their second straight loss.

  1. Bozo needs a reminder that individual stats mean nothing when it’s all about the championships.

  2. This is the end for Manning. Probably a wise idea to sit him with Osweiler getting blown up out there. Diminished play is one thing but to get broken by that Chiefs D on national tv is even sadder.

  3. Sad to see a star burn out. Thank you PFM for revolutionizing your position. It’s been a pleasure to watch.

  4. The posts on here make me sick. The fans booing him after making them relevant again? If the offense was what it was supposed to be, this wouldn’t be happening. Little help from the line, no running game, there is plenty blame to go around.

  5. Actual recorded interceptions during game – 4, however should have been intercepted 5 more times…….
    Time. To. Retire.

  6. I sure hope Brady plays long enough to beat the records Manning now holds. The only reason he played this year was to beat Favre’s records. He was obviously done last year. Shows how much of an idiot Elway is. Everyone else knew he was done!

  7. Do you think he’s chip kellys kind of Qb I mean since we’re gonna go through every quarterback in America till one works for the iggles

  8. Ya benched a hall of famer for a quarterback-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack
You aught to know by now

  9. One QB this week had a perfect 158.3. One QB this week had a “perfect” 0.0. One of those quarterbacks is Peyton Manning. The other is Kirk Cousins. And in bizarro week in the NFL …

Oh, and Peyton’s Total QBR will be 74.2

Ugh, now we have to listen to ESPN talk about this all week

No you dont, just dont watch ESPN.

  11. It has always been about the records .In fact the Indystar use to have what they called the Manning meter .The Colts/Manning should have gone for the undefeated record-now that would been something especially after the 18-1 season .
Instead Peyton is watching his generational rival go for back to back not once but twice.

If anyone would anything about BUSTS & CHOKING.
It would definitely would be a jets fan. How many Super Bowls they’ve been to? How many won? Well then…

  13. Funny I don’t see Kubiak mentioned … he’s the idiot hat changed the offence which Peyton has been running all his career.

I am in TOTAL agreement with you!!!!! I am thrilled that Peyton set the record! He is a q/b with humility, humbleness, and integrity, certain q/b’s do NOT possess those qualities!!. Also, he has several injuries, and Osweiler is not doing any better. He will be a success in whatever he aspires to be, after he retires

  15. @p18tonfan22775

A bunch of people don’t follow football very closely. He’s playing injured. The injury report this week lists right shoulder, foot, and rib-cage.

  16. Terrible day for the best ever. His body betrayed him midway through last season. But he’s still the best QB there’s ever been – and he’ll be a fantastic coach in this league – probably next season.

  17. How many times has Peyton been intercepted in one game?
I guess they pulled him so he wouldn’t break that record too.

  18. When he was finally yanked, his stats were; 5 completions out of 20 attempts for 35 yards, 4 ints, 0 TDs for a ‘0’ QB rating. But he got his record, and isn’t that the important thing?

  19. For those not watching this game its 4 ints for Manning in 2 1/2 quarters BUT if KC defenders could catch they would have at least 7 ints. Manning deserved the bench in this game.

  20. I am the biggest Manning fan the world has ever known, but it’s time for him to hang up his hat. It’s one of the saddest things I’ve seen in life. A man that once was the greatest physically and sharpest mentally to fall to the level he is now.

  21. About time, he’s played terrible this yr and half of last yr, looks like a tebow run team with the defense providing the wins…father time catches up with them all eventually

  22. Alex Smith and the chiefs have now had both Brady and manning benched against them. If only they played this well consistently……

  23. Let’s be honest, if his last name wasn’t Manning he would’ve been benched several games ago.

  24. I don’t think this is Father Time. I think this is Kubiack. The man is an offensive idiot. Peyton has thrived his entire career playing one style of offense, so Kubiack throws it in the can and forces the same stale offense that didn’t work in Houston.

Manning has won a championship. Were you alive when that took place?

Shows how much you know little Richard. The Chiefs D is actually pretty darn good. Osweiler isn’t doing much better. Most of his yards are garbage yards went KC is playing a soft zone. He threw a pick and almost threw 2 more that were dropped.

He was obviously done last year. Shows how much of an idiot Elway is. Everyone else knew he was done!

Really? Because he threw 39 TDs, 4700 yds, 101 rating – and that while playing hurt through December.

Which coincidentally is when all this, “Manning’s through” started after his first crappy game playing while injured. decline doesn’t happen in a week. You don’t go from 4 TDs and 400 yards one week to Ryan Leaf the next. Some sports blogs, including this one, ran with that as their angle, intentionally leaving out the fact that he was playing injured in their ‘decline’ stories.

He’s had no arm strength since the neck surgeries. He’s been floating wounded ducks since 2012. That’s not a new thing, and not a indicative of decline in his case. His problems this year are reconciling his play with Kubiak’s offense, and his injuries the past weeks. His arm strength isn’t the problem, it’s been weak since 2012. There’s a difference between playing injured and decline, especially if the injuries effect throwing, like shoulder and ribs.

  28. I love Peyton Manning but he is done. He’s been awful all year long.

The Broncos-Patriots game in a few weeks just got a little less interesting seeing as the Broncos are now 2 games behind the Patriots.

  29. Well, at least denver hung in for half a season. Meanwhile, the defending super bowl champs are still undefeated. Blood pressures around the country are spiking as you read this……….good times……..great times

  30. The front page link says “Peyton benched after 4 INTs, passing Favre on all-time record”.

Anybody else read this as passing Favre for most INTs?

  31. You can blame the line all you like, fact is hes been sacked less than Brady and it hasnt stopped the Pats rolling on.

Congrats to Peyton but lets compare apples with apples. Favre spent most of his career passing in the worst Stadiums in the NFL for passing: Lambeau and New York. Peyton was sheltered in a dome and ran up scores in the 4th qtr. This record is meaningless.

  32. Hey ayubo4 go check out his stats from his Super Bowl run. Carried by his defense through the playoffs. Think he had more INTs that TD passes. Peyton has always been about Peyton not the team

  33. Noodle Arm has broken Farve’s record and is now satisfied. He was always about regular season wins and records vs playoff wins and SB’s. That is why he is referred to as One and Done Manning.

He has made about $700,000 per game average since 2000 for the regular season but the playoffs you only get about $20,000 to $100,000 now depending on the round and whether you win or lose. 10 years ago you made much less than that. That’s peanuts to Noodle Arm. He makes more than that being a pitchman for numerous companies selling crap.

If Noodle Arm could have had great numbers and records while losing games and missing the playoffs he would have been very happy with that.

  34. Guy was a heck of a quarterback for good long run. He has nothing to be ashamed of, Father Time is undefeated. I’m a Pats fan and even I hope this performance isn’t the end, that this is was because he was banged up. Good competition makes the game worthwhile and I hope for one more Brady/Manning duel.

  35. Big Bro Manning:
Super Bowl… eight (8) points scored.
Favre passing record broken… same night as four (4) INTs.
    Ugh.

  36. How hilarious would it be if he sucked so bad in his next game that he threw for minus yards, and Favre reclaimed the title?

WOW! All of the sudden, no team is afraid of the big bad Broncos.

Sadly I had to start Manning cause Rivers is on a bye.. Darn you bloody big head!

    You and me both smh.

  38. Some of you people (mostly Pats fans as usual) should be ashamed of these comments. It’s like there can’t be another great QB besides Brady. You people really think Peyton gives two Fs about the yardage record? Dude wants to win, just like any other QB. Show some respect. And jetsfan08 or whatever isn’t a Jets fan. He’s a troll in clown shoes trying to make real fans look bad.

Not even close to the GOAT, but he is the GCOAT(greatest choker of all time). His stats don’t translate into winning football games when it matters. He has one gift super bowl that the defense and Adam Vinatari won for him….. Pathetic

  42. Peyton is just probably happy that he set the record holder to clipboard holder record. It is all about the records. He may not have a great playoff record, but he will always have the most regular season records.
