Peyton Manning won’t use injuries as an excuse

The Broncos lost badly at home on Sunday to the Chiefs, in a game that included the benching of quarterback Peyton Manning.

After the game, coach Gary Kubiak said Peyton will still play if healthy. Peyton was reluctant to blame the performance on not being healthy.

“I have a really hard time using that as any type of excuse,” Manning told reporters after the game. “I had some injuries during the week. [Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos] and the training staff worked overtime to get me to feeling like I thought like I could go out there and play. Obviously, you have to give a lot of feedback yourself, and I felt good enough to go out there and play. If you look back on it now, I have a hard time saying that’s why I played badly. Could that be the reason? I guess it always could be. But to me, that’s an easy way out. That’s kind of an easy line to say after the fact. So I was very honest with [Antonopulos] and coach Kubiak that I felt like I could go. I wanted to go, I wanted to be out there for the team. I did feel like we had some guys down, with [Aqib] Talib down and DeMarcus [Ware] down, and weren’t really sure Emmanuel [Sanders] was going to be able to play. So I wanted to be out there. I was as honest with them with the feedback as I could give them, and certainly did not play well and am disappointed about that.”

So will Manning be healthy enough to face the Bears and his former head coach, John Fox?

“I talked to coach Kubiak and obviously he wants to see how I feel,” Manning said. “You know, tomorrow and during the week, I think I’d like to be able to practice during the week. I didn’t practice until Friday and that’s not ideal for anybody to go out and play, and so I’d like to be healthier to practice some on Wednesday, like I have in the past, and on Thursday. So we’ll address that when those days get there. That would be the goal to get back to a normal practice schedule, so we’ll see how that goes tomorrow.”

Manning entered the game with foot an rib injuries. The real question is whether he emerged from Sunday’s contest any better or any worse than before the game.

  1. Injured or not, he’s clearly in his last season. No matter what happens the rest of the way, Manning is done.

  2. This is ridiculous! If you were hurt that much that your play stunk that bad, you should have known before the game and should have never let yourself play BECAUSE that looked bush league!

And if it wasn’t because you were hurt, then that’s even worse because again that looked bush league! And if you weren’t hurt and played that bad, you should hang them up.

I don’t know how any Bronco fan can have any confidence in you or your coach.

  3. I’m not using injury as an excuse but just remember I am injured. I have been playing pretty bad since the middle of last season but remember I got hurt in the chargers game weeks after I started playing bad but let’s not talk about that

  4. No bones were broken, no muscles were torn. So no matter how much something aches or hurts, you go out and play. Every player thinks like that.

Have you ever had an injury? Sports or otherwise, you never know how it’s going to feel or how you’re going to be able to cope until the time comes.

Speaking of time coming, Peyton’s has, which is shame because despite the fact he tore my team apart twice a tear for over 10 tears, it was incredible to see him play the game.

  6. A huge game, when combined with a dramatic Patriots win, in determining the first round playoff byes in the AFC.

  7. He’s cooked or needs rest. Might as well give Osweiller a true shot with a week of prep. If he falls on his face, oh well, you gave Manning an extra bye week. This team is in trouble now that the D isn’t bailing them out with defensive scores.

First of all, it is BUSH League, not Busch league. If you are going to correct someone on spelling, know the correct spelling yourself. Might I suggest looking it up.

Second of all, how long did he need to stay in the game before he realized he was struggling with the injury? Was he ever going to take himself out or was he going to continue playing that bad? Let me remind you that coach Kubiak eventually decided to take him out of the game.

  9. He’s done. There’s no shame when your body finally fails you though. It happens to every athlete. But anyone who thinks he’s ‘coming back’, that he’s just in a slump, is just not dealing with reality.

  10. Not gonna use injuries as an excuse, but if I were healthy I’d be tearing it up. It’s not the lame coaching staff or the pathetic offensive line or any of that either…

  11. It’s not looking good for Denver. The only chance they have of making the Super Bowl is to have home field throughout the playoffs. At the moment, it looks like they’re going to wind up as the 3, meaning if they win their first playoff game, they’ll need to go to Cincy or Foxborough in January. I don’t think they can win in either place with Manning under center.

  12. As a Patriots fan, I have loved to hate Peyton Manning. He has given football fans everywhere moments to marvel and remember. That makes it all the more sad to watch this train wreck of a season for such a great athlete. I really wish that he would hang up his cleats before he manages to truly damage the legacy of a great football career.

  13. Peyton’s legion of fan boys will undoubtedly try to use injuries as an excuse.

Only one problem with that though. Manning has been terrible going back to about midway through last season, even BEFORE the injuries.

    That’s basically a a season’s worth of games where he’s been awful.

    Face facts – he’s done.

  14. Yup, the weather is turning cold and so is Peyton. No indoor stadium like in Indy to keep those old bones warm.

And wasn’t ‘Bush League’ a 1970s porn film?

  15. It’s the new system, the lousy coach, the lousy offensive line, the lousy supporting cast so says the analysts and all of the Peyton’s apologists. Now it’s injuries even though he says he was good to go. It couldn’t be that he’s old and washed up. Say it isn’t so. LOL. Peyton fan boys are delusional.

  16. The only reason Manning didn’t retire last year was because the yardage record was within reach. Now he has the record, and he should be relegated to 2nd string. If his name wasn’t Manning, and he wasn’t on a quest for records, he wouldn’t be playing. Simple as that. He hasn’t played well enough to be one of the 32 starting QBs.

  17. Why do I have the feeling that if a 3rd party doctor examined Peyton Manning he’d pass him as 100% healthy. I’m tired of these injury excuse to cover up that he’s completely washed up and has a noodle arm.

  18. It’s sad to see but games like today just shows you that Peyton just doesnt have it anymore. I feel for him he doesn’t want to quit playing but he needs to just hang it up and go out at least on a decent season. He’s got a future as an OC if not head coaching job waiting for him when he retires I’m sure Indy would gladly have him on their coaching staff.

I have to agree. Some Denver fans on this one forum were trying to compare it to Brady’s game against KC last year, but it’s not the same. Brady didn’t look done, he just had a bad O-line, and their O wasn’t in sync.

Brady still could play a few more years. Manning can’t. I don’t think he should play another game. Elway needs to have a talk with him later this morning.

  20. It’s Kubiaks scheme that is killing this offense! The receievers are blanketed, they can’t run the ball and the offensive line is suspect at best. The only times the offense has looked good this year is at the end of the half or games when the broncos were “forced” to run Mannings no huddle. Kubiak needs to put his pride aside and let manning go back to his system, that he’s ran at an elite level his entire career. No one can seem to figure out the struggles are related to Kubiaks offensive scheme being forced onto peyton.

  21. Regardless if this is his last year, Manning has given us some great football and is a FB HOF. He deserves our respect for what he has brought to this game each week. Love him or hate him he is one of the greats and should be given all the respect in the world. All players for what they endure week in and out just for us to mon morning qb

  22. Players learn early on to play with pain.

Part of the trainer’s job is to make a determination on whether a player can further injure himself by continuing to play. Then they treat/tape and play, dealing with it during the week. That happens every week, every game with every player on every Team.

Peyton’s problem is just that he’s older than most other players and his body, through no fault of his, doesn’t respond the same as a 25 year old body might. During the last few years his performance has declined midway through the season and this year is no different.

  23. I dont understand all of the hate for Manning. I am a die hard PM fan and it has been very difficult to watch this season. Denver will still be in the playoffs and as a fan of the team it feels good to know that your team has a shot in the end albeit slim with his history but maybe the D can pick him up like they did in 2006. It will be a sad day in the NFL when he decides to hang it up. I understand he is not the best to ever play the position but so what. He is a great player and he is fun to watch every Sunday with the exception of this season so far. Haters gonna hate but oh well I guess thats the life of a sports fan

  24. It think it might be time to stop concentrating on football and start growing your pizza business.
