Report: Julian Edelman broke a bone in foot

Getty Images

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman left Sunday’s thriller against the Giants with a foot injury in the first half and did not return to action.

It will reportedly be a while before Edelman makes that return. Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that Edelman has broken the fifth metatarsal in his left foot. Garafolo adds that it is believed to be “a true Jones fracture.”

If all that sounds familiar, it’s likely because they were part of the discussions that went on when Dez Bryant initially broke the same bone in his foot. Bryant was hurt in Week One and returned for the Cowboys’ Week Eight game against the Seahawks.

So it fits that Garafolo reports that a playoff return is possible for Edelman. At 9-0, it’s very likely that the Patriots are going to be in the postseason but their offense is going to have to adapt to a second big loss in as many weeks.

Edelman has been targeted the most of any player on the team and running back Dion Lewis was third on Tom Brady’s list when he tore his ACL. The Patriots had trouble moving the ball through the air at times against the Giants and they may have more as they’re also dealing with a lot of injury issues on their offensive line.

Of course, Brady still threw for 334 yards and led the drive to set up Stephen Gostkowski’s game-winning field goal so there’s reason to believe that New England will figure it out.

  1. That’s a big loss. The offense runs through Edelman and Gronkowski. Amendola is going to have to step up and, of course, not get injured until he comes back.

  2. He will be back for the playoff push. I’d say it wouldn’t matter much. Because the Pats seem to have the ability to plug someone in where they need help, and still succeed. But Edelman is a good player, and one they might actually miss for a bit. Either way, Brady will still tear teams apart whether the balls are inflated to specs or deflated, or overinflated. It doesn’t really matter when your as good as Tom is.

  3. 38-13 Pats
    43-21 Pats manning 157 yds, 2 INT
    28-12 pats Bradford 3 INTs

Brady will take the sideline with the historical quarterbacks of legend at halftime for SB 50 and be the only one with a helmet in his hand and a sweaty head.

Hes still got 4 YES FOUR, elite years left as a QB

When your team loses to the pats just remember you lost to a historical quarterback that you were able to witness play.

  4. not to worry………next man up… bring on fat rex and his team….(another victory…. 10-0)…
This will just get the Pat’s more determined to move on…. more tight end passes… chandler more involved….
More concern that our O line gets healthier

  5. They will overcome it. All of the bottom feeders are salivating at the chance at getting ahead of a depleted pats team. I’d hate to be a fan of another team.
    ———————————————————-

Yes, because no other team has had to deal with injuries. Every team has been affected by injuries, some much worse than the Pats.

  6. Can’t imagine what you all would say if pats fans celebrated your injuries. The hypocrites in here are unbelievable.

  7. pw1265, it takes a big, big man to celebrate an injury to one of the guys who goes and lays his body on the line for our entertainment every Sunday, regardless of the laundry their wearing. Pretty high level stuff right there.

  8. Luckly LaFell is comming back. He’s not an Edelman(Amendola can fake it a bit), but he can serve as a good weapon.

Next week against the Bills will be a good time to get everything in a row for Denver.

  9. mikermiker.. Hey it’s the jealous and butt hurt moron with another classless comment. Pats are 9-0!! Deal with that loser 🙂

  10. All you haters teams would have already packed it in..Pats will just plug Anendola in thier and keep rolling ..GFY

  11. I love wen the patriot trolls come out at times like these it reminds me how nasty we are . let them have there moment our moments are way more enjoyable like feb2 and tonight epic win # all we doiswin

Couldn’t have happened to a worse team that deserves some karma

    —————-

Does anyone know who mikermiker cheers for or does he have 31 favorite teams.

By the way bad karma would have the pats missing the field goal.

  13. Rex and his undisciplined mopes (who always talk like they’ve accomplished what the Patriots actually have), will generously provide New England with a steady diet of free 15-yard moronic penalties.

We’ll just refer to those throughout the game as “Edelmans.”

  14. The offense will just morph into something different that exploits the strengths of the players that are out there.

  15. Haters are so happy that Edelman is hurt. Hello???? The Pats still won!!! Happy to disappoint you tonight and the future.
Don’t worry haters… We’ll get by… We’ll have the last laugh… Remember last year? No? We won the SB and we are on our way to win another one. Our team really look ragged right now but we still win. Just wait till we are in full force. How are your teams going to cope the onslaught?

Awwww, that is just so sad to hear. lmao
    ====================
Wow, a real classy citizen right here. How pathetic does one’s life need to be to laugh at another person’s injury?
Did you also laugh when you heard that Paris had a terrorist attack with a 120+ person death toll? Please do humanity a favor and jump off the nearest bridge you can find, thanks!

  17. Noone has sympathy for this classless cheating criminal enterprise. Bring back patriot way aaron hernandez to replace him. Amendola will be next to go down in flames with usage going up & often injured throughout his career.

  18. Lol Edleman is a straight punk every single game and now the pats brats are surprised that nobody is joining their candlelight vigil for this clown. This squad is forever marked with cheating scandals and can never shake it. Who cares that this loser got injured the whole team is a skidmark on the game and their fans are worse.

  19. Patriots: defending super bowl champs AND still undefeated. Now, the Pats probably will not go undefeated, but the road to the super bowl will go through Foxboro. As far as #11 being hurt, that is unfortunate. But it shows who out there on the comment section is REALLY (butt) hurt. Yeah, you know who you are. Have fun biting your pillows tonight, losers.

  20. Close game. Pats were barely able to edge out the New York Referees.

And people call the Pats fans classless? Okay…

  21. Poor poor Patriot Hater.

They really do think their puny little weakling team belongs on the same field as US. 🙂

Oh you poor deluded souls…. 🙂

  22. We all remember what happened to the Patriots offense when Welker went down with a knee injury in Houston several years ago; they were blown out by the Raven in the first round of the playoffs. Thankfully, the Patriots have better depth than they did back then.

What to look for in the coming weeks:

    1. The trade for Keshawn Martin and bringing in free agent Scott Chandler look to be very smart moves now, both will need to take more snaps and make catches.

    2. The Patriots are going to need the defense and special teams to step up which they both did today.

    3. James White will need to step up as well; he did not have a big impact today.

    4. Amendola was the star of the game today with the fourth down catch to keep the final drive alive, the last catch to get the ball in field goal range, and the punt return that got them back in the game while down 10. He will need to step into the Edelman role and move the chains which he is very capable of doing. Someone else will need to relieve him on kick off and punt return duty to some degree.

    5. Brady will need to do a better job of protecting the ball than he did today and the team will need to avoid the penalties, both of which should have lead to a loss to the Giants.

  23. Did anyone else notice the offensive holding on every play of the final drive? Something tells me the patriots could put the cheerleaders on the field and the refs won’t let them lose. Don’t worry pats fans there are literally millions of little white guys in Boston that could fill little Edelmans little shoes

  24. Next man up. Pats have 2 games up on Denver for the 1 seed (Bengals, lol), so they have some wiggle room. Just get back for the divisional round.

  25. You have to be pathetic to watches a great game like the one we watched today and then go on social media and either trashes the Patriots or revels in Edelman’s injury.

Personally, I love the way the Patriots win games they have no business winning.

    Eli is a class act.

  26. I said last week that this game scared me and it did. Huge win, but huge loss with Edelman. I don’t see a perfect season now, but I’ll take 14-2. Lost allot of speed the past 2 weeks.

I guess you missed the 10 yard holding penalty on the Patriots’ center that negated a touchdown by Blount in the fourth quarter and would have forced the Giants to score a touchdown and a 2 point conversion to tie.

  28. By the way, the holding penalty on Andrews was a good call by the ref and a rare mistake by the rookie, Andrews.

  29. Guess we’ll see how Danny can fill in(my guess is excellent).. Now it’s either Martin or Dobson to REALLY step it up….

Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving individual.
    ————————————————————
What did Edelman do to “deserve” this? Work his butt off as a 7th round pick as a QB for a small school to become a star WR in the league?

  31. Aaron Dobson; This is your moment of truth. It’s time for you to fish or cut bait. Brady will be targeting him, LaFell and White a lot for the rest of the season. I believe Dobson will finally show up big. And play huge just hope he doesn’t get injured again himself. But I still believe Dobson has enormous game breaking potential if Brady can help him find his confidence.

  32. I hope you realize that several of these comments are the same person commenting from multiple accounts

Yeah Karma is a 9-0 record and an amazing come from behind win as defending super bowl champs. Morons.

  33. What did Edelman do to “deserve” this?
    —-
Just mindless drool from Patriot Hater. 🙂 Of course they would be too wussy to say that to his face! 😀

That’s why it’s so much freaking FUN to literally get right up in Patriot Hater’s grill and run my mouth.

The bottom line is Brady CHOKED but the dumb Giants safety dropped the easy pick.

But keep on calling this guy the “GOAT.”
    ===================
So who is more clutch under pressure? Who has more rings than Brady? Who has had to deal with more of a revolving door at the receiver position? Who thrives better under adversity? (Not Rodgers or P Manning) Who would you call the GOAT? Whoever it is has some awfully large shoes to fill

Did anyone else notice the phantom PI calls against the Pats like the entire game? How about the inability to protect a defenseless receiver with Scott Chandler early in the game, did anybody else notice that? I’m pretty sure Big Blue had the refs in their back pockets in this one.

  36. This game was karma for the Pats. They lost by 6 points against the spread, and frankly, until they apologize for the horrors of Deflategate, I see them losing against the spread several more times by margins not quite big enough against the spread to adversely affect their overall W/L record.

  37. Karma for what? Edelman working hard to be Brady’s top receiver? Karma for putting the Patriots and Brady through hell for months with Frame Gate? Karma for Patriots Paranoia?
We are blessed. Except for Gronk and Brady we have regular players who are hard working and most of them are hurt yet we are 9-0. If that is Karma your teams should pray for one… Or two.

… Those phantom calls by the refs? I was wondering why it seemed that the refs are hell bent on stopping the Pats. Then it turned out Goodell was there watching the game. I bet Goodell feels wicked deflated..

  38. Rex and his undisciplined mopes (who always talk like they’ve accomplished what the Patriots actually have), will generously provide New England with a steady diet of free 15-yard moronic penalties.

The Pats and their fans have come to rely on the refs.

    ——————————

Yes indeed! This was not his best game. He is The GOAT. All players have bad days. It happens. Brady only had 4 interceptions going into yesterday’s game. He also leads the NFL in TD passes. But go on and hate. Maybe you could film your antics during a Patriots game. That would be entertaining.

  40. Wow, the hate over someone getting injured is strong today.

Must be too angry about the whole “Brady won’t be the same with ‘inflated’ balls” storyline you guys were crowing about not working so well, hey?

I don’t care what team a player is on, I never think an injury is a good thing.

I can laugh at Peyton throwing 4 INTs to 5 total completions. I won’t ever call his injuries “karma” or crow about Luck’s undisclosed rib injuries (I will laugh at Grigson and Co. if they get caught though, because Grigson slimier than a bucket of snails).

Apparently you guys are so hurt over being wrong (why? that never changes) that you’ll stoop to crowing about a player getting injured? All one can do is shake their head in pity at your petty hate.

  41. Giants’ Luck finally runs out!

    1. Colts had deflated footballs – page 8 Wells report.

    2. Brady requested that all persons be placed under oath and the NFL tried to seal this fact (transcripts). Thus under oath, the NFL admitted that they DID NOT know anything about the Ideal Gas Law (IGL).

    3. Patriot’s record last 24 games: Won 22 .. Lost 2.

    4. Since the end of the first half of FrameGate: Brady 31 Touchdowns, 5 Interceptions.

    5. Fumbles since FrameGate: research it, non-Patriots’ fans will be disappointed.

    6. Would you accept a guilty designation based on “ASSUMPTIONS AND DATA THAT IS UNCERTAIN” (Wells Report). This is AMERICA and King Roger IS NOT bigger than our great Country! The Missouri Supreme Court, in a separate case, stated in May, 2015: ….“the terms of the contract designating the NFL commissioner, an employee of the team owners, as the sole arbitrator with unfettered discretion to establish the rules for arbitration are unconscionable and, therefore, unenforceable”.

In the future, a best-selling movie will FOREVER PRESERVE the disgraceful actions of the current NFL office.

GOAT wouldn’t have to cheat to win. Pats dont have one single superbowl without cheating. Pretty discusting that they just get a slap on hand after the fact instead of yanking the trophy away from the cheaters. Its the only way they will ever learn.

Ref’s in their pocket? I am no Giants fan but did you honestly not see like 4 blocks in the back during that long return. 2 of them happening right in front of the officials, yet the flag stayed in the pocket. Shocking !!!

  43. For the better part of 15 years the haters have told us Brady isn’t that good and Belichick wins because he cheats. They keep telling us the end of the Patriots winning is about to end. Has anyone in human history been as consistently wrong in their analysis and predictions than the Patriots haters?

Guys, if you watched that game last night and were not on the edge off your seat; if you didn’t get off your seat and need to walk around the room as Gostkowski came out to try a 54 yard field goal to win it; and, if you didn’t appreciate virtually every single play in the game (good and bad) you are missing out on why football is such a joy to watch.

  44. The bitterness of some of the commenters here knows no bounds. They are so reprehensible that they wish injury on people. Their anguish at the Patriot’s continued success is most enjoyable and the fact that that incompetent ass Goodell was there last night to witness the game was even better. Wish they would have put the TV camera on that fool so we could see how much he was enjoying it.
The game was great and the win enjoyable, but I would have preferred the record being 8 and 1 with no injury to Edelman. Either way though the Patriot’s will be there in the race for the next Super Bowl.

  45. They lost by 6 points against the spread,
    —-
I wonder where those spread games standings are. 🙂 Do you think they NFL will count them instead of the real standings?

    🙂

  46. “Does anyone know who mikermiker cheers for or does he have 31 favorite teams.”

No he’s too cowardly to identify which team he’s a fan of.
