Carson Palmer could be facing fine for crotch-chop at Seattle fans

AP

On the same day that the question of whether Panthers quarterback Cam Newton celebrates excessively was debated both off the field and on it, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer did something for which he could be fined by the league.

Taunting the Seattle crowd after the Andre Ellington touchdown run that iced the 39-32 win over the Seahawks, Palmer made the universally-recognized Triple H crotch-chop gesture.

Rule 12, Section 3, Article (1)(c) defines unsportsmanlike conduct as “[u]sing baiting or taunting acts or words that engender ill will between teams.” Note 4 specifically prohibits “throat slash; machine-gun salute; sexually-suggestive gestures; prolonged gyrations; or stomping on a team logo.”

The 2015 fine schedule allows a maximum fine of $11,576 to be imposed for unsportsmanlike conduct, whether or not it’s penalized.

If the league determines that Palmer’s crotch chop constitutes a “sexually-suggestive gesture” (and not a pitch for a new product), he could be making an involuntary donation to the NFL’s charities, just in time for the holidays.

  1. I don’t care if he gets fined. That fanbase deserves everything they get thrown at them. When they threw stuff at Bowman when he get injured, they lost all respect. Totally classless from top to bottom. They paid all that money to Wilson, who is stinking up the place. They give all that money to the legion of bums and they get 39 points thrown up on them. Seattle is done, and they will be hurting with the cap. The Niners stink this year, but what’s going to be really bad is when Blaine Gabbert of all qbs, comes into your place and beats you. You’re done, Seattle.

  2. He said in his press confrence that he was gesturing to a group of friends that were in the front row of the section behind the bench.

  3. It was a huge play. Can’t blame them for a little celebrating. In the Panther/Packer game, Cam was celebrating after practically every play in the first quarter.

  4. Too much success, too early. Egos way too large. Made too much noise. Hopefully reality will help in the long run.

(I’m talking about Seattle fans, not the team.)

  5. Richard Sherman is losing it faster than noodle arm Manning. Paper lions are what the short lived legion of boom are these days. Also, just because Wilson runs around doesn’t make him elite by any stretch. That franchise will regret sinking that much dough into a mediocre talent for years to come.

  6. he needs to do the Triple H entrance at his next home game. Including Motorhead tune and water bottle spotlight spit. it’s not a taunt, it’s a tribute

  7. Whether you like us, or dont like us, learn to love us, because deep down inside you know, the Seahawks are still the greatest team of this generation. Whooooo!!!

  8. Not sure if you ever watched WWF/WWE, but that was a minor pelvic thrust, NOT the ole DX “salute.”

    Should NOT be fined.

  9. What’s the machine gun salute? Is that like a Cleveland Steamer? There is nothing in the rules about the Cleveland Steamer by the way. You may not be able to stomp on a team logo but I found a loophole on what you may do to it.

  10. I wish the world would lighten up and have a beer once in a while. Let ’em play, let ’em celebrate. But you can always count on the High Horse Patrol to gasp and faint, and talk about class. You must be real fun at parties.

You and the 5 other “12’s” need to find a new wagon to jump on. Seattle is done.

  12. He didn’t chop anything. This was a pelvic thrust.

  13. I didn’t know what a crotch-chop was, but watched it on the linked video.

If that is supposed to be offensive, then there are some seriously sensitive people

  14. I don’t care if they fine him or not. People should toughen up about petty nonsense like this. What hurts is the loss, not some silly gesture. I’ve been a fan for well over 30 years so not sure about too much success too soon, it was a long time coming.
What I’m here for is to congratulate the Cards and their fans for the win and to take my lumps. I’d say the division is a lock for you guys. Good luck for the remainder of the season and go get ’em in the playoffs! I love good division rivalries but want NFC west teams to succeed regardless. It makes us all look better. Currently that’s all I’ve got.

  15. I like the guy but wouldn’t Cam Newton’s td celebration directed toward the few Titan fans still in attendance be the exact definition of “prolonged gyrations”???

    Ya’ll are 4-5 WHOOOOO!!!!!!!

  17. they’ll probably fine him, remember, this is the NFL.

Same league that fined Wes Welker $10k (plus he got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty) for making a snow angel after a TD, in a game played in the snow, on Dec. 21st, 2008

  18. I’m sure he’ll gladly pay the fine. He’s having an MVP quality year.

But let’s be honest here – is there any fandom in any sport more annoying than the cretins who refer to themselves as ‘the 12s’?

‘Us’? What position do you play for the Seahawks.

As far as ‘greatest team’ – well the roster is different every season, so ‘team’ is a seasonal thing. If you are referring to the organization itself, a single SB victory isn’t exactly a qualifier for ‘greatest’ of this generation or any other. The Seahawks are 4-5 (should be 3-6 if not for inept refs). They’ve won one SuperBowl as part of this ‘generation’. The Patriots, by comparison, have won 4.

  20. OK, Haters. I hear ya. Those of you knocking the bandwagon fans, need to know there are thousands of us fans that stick with our team, win or lose. I have been a Seahawk fan since Seattle got the franchise, and will continue to be, as will the faithful thousands.
Also, I can’t say I blame the Cards for the bit of celebration. They have been handled by the Hawks for sometime now and I think I’d gloat a little too. Not unlike what we did when we bested the Santa Clara Niners. Payback is never fun on the receiving end, but I accept it as part of the game.

  21. What about Drew Stanton’s celebration? That put back white people celebrations like 10 years. LOL

Just when we were making headway with the simple Gronk spike and such, which overcame the Mark Madsen “dance” from Lakers years gone by. Now we have to overcome the Drew Stanton punching bag fiasco. 😦

  22. I don’t get why the QB’s do this stuff. Cam Newton’s was ridiculous yesterday too. They get paid fortunes, get on with the playing and stop the crap, that’s for highschool kids, not adults being paid millions.
Fine them all when they do it, that would solve the problem.

  23. No more insults from Seattle hurled towards SF and that in itself is worth it. I think Seattle and SF have a lot in common now actually….

  24. No matter which website you read about this on, 90% of the comments are about how the classless Seahawks fans deserved this, lol. Burning all your bridges results in infamy.

  25. Admit it. We would ALL love to do the “Triple H Crotch Chop” toward the Seadderall Cheathawks fans.

Most of them are either methed out morons or liberal hipster turds.

  26. I agree, I think it was to fans he knew in the stands. But in spite of that the Seattle fans rose about as quick as one can to be one of the most irritating fan base there is. Now their team is on the descent as they had their time and its not going to be the same anymore. Its a fight to even get a will card spot from now on, soon you will see the inner fighting and finger point begin. That could be possibly next week if they happen to lose to the 9ers at home. Wow would that send a shock wave through that whole organization! They would be tied with the 9ers for last place!!!!!

  27. I just love all the haters…too much fun…just too much fun. So okay, the Hawks blew another 4th quarter lead, yes they have been ahead in the 4th quarter of every game this year…the offensive penalties have killed the team, but calling the secondary lame, is just that, a bunch of moron haters. You can’t rely on the defense to win games. If Seattle had a half decent O-line they would be on top of the division. Wilson decision making on the long pass has been quite poor. It might not be this year, but they are still on top, with more Superbowl appearances in the the last 10 years than most teams ever….Yes a dynasty on a down turn…. hatters are nothing but that.

  28. Eh, whatever. I didn’t really care for the gesture watching it live, but he earned the right to rub their noses in it. Apart from the end zone pick thrown to Thomas in the first quarter, he absolutely shredded the secondary last night.

    -Hawk fan

  29. Years from now, I can see Carson Palmer doing the “Carson Chop” after he gets some cold cuts.

  30. If the Cards run the table (beat undefeated Cincy next week, beat undefeated Carolina in NFC Championship and beat undefeated New England in the Super Bowl ) they just might become “Murica’s Team”.

  31. Then Carson grabbed the refs mic and yelled, “To be the man, you gotta beat the man! Now why don’t you Seattle cheerleaders come on over here and ride space mountain. Whooooo!”

Then proceeded to strut across the endzone.

    Strange behavior.

  32. don’t care one bit. they won a tough game against their division rival. plus, he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who’s doing that kind of thing all the time. I’m cool letting the guy have his moment.

plenty of gloating here today, and while this may not be the Hawks year, there’s still plenty of talent on the team, and most of them are still right in their prime. we’ll be alright. just need to draft an O-line that can block w/out holding.

  33. Regarding what happened to Bowman after his injury, it was a couple fans at the most who threw popcorn and they were called out by the rest of Seattle for it. Both Seahawks players and other fans spoke out against it.

Seattle fans are not a collective.

  34. Palmer should be fined, period !!! Very asinine and stupid thing to do – Classless ! I hope Cincy cleans their clocks.Hawks fans didn’t deserve that.

  35. It’s amazing to me that fans still keep thinking the the Seahawks are just going to flip a switch and be fine….

There are serious issues right now in Seattle.

Clearly, Dan Quinn was more important than people want to believe. The amount of mental, and physical mistakes they are making is astounding

They aren’t nearly as deep….in many positions.

Russell Wilson is regressing… I know its not popular, but it seems that virtually all Seahawks plays are him just escaping the pocket and playing street ball.

This is a team that has clearly lost their identity. They are no longer the imposing bad asses literally scared teams to defeat.

    5 good Qbs…..5 defeats…

They’ve only one against the bottom feeder offenses in the NFL, many if whom were starting backup qbs.

  36. I, for one, am tired of seeing grown men act like idiots with the choreographed dance moves after every play.

I miss the days when guys like Walter Payton would calmly had the ball to the ref after a score.

Class, like Elvis, has left the building.

  37. I found Drew Stanton’s celebration dance far more offensive. 🙂

I’m sure Carson would gladly pay the fine and it will be worth every penny.

  38. Dude, all he’s showcasing is his awesome reverence for late 90’s professional wrestling, when it was better than the NFL.

The fact that he did it in Seattle, the capital of misusing the word “Ironic”, is in itself beautiful irony.

  39. I’m just glad I learned that move has a name . is it the official name or just some ad hoc journalistic liberty taken with such an important gesture ? I thought at first it was a reference to a diminutive karate stars go to move.

  40. If Marshawn Lynch would have done that, he’d already have been fined and crucified online. Instead people are giving Palmer virtual high fives and encouraging him to do it again. Freaking ridiculous!

Dynasty???!!!! Good lord when did winning one SB in 3 try’s constitute a dynasty? And making 3 SB’s in 10 years hardly qualifies as a team with most appearances ever. Tap the brakes mr 12. There’s 13 teams with more appearances than Seattle.

  42. Just another example of what the league wants to take out of the game but they are sure to put in the broadcasts over and over again. Hypocritical? Of course it is. If you don’t want it, don’t show it. You are ridding the sport of the fan that jumps onto the field in a drunken stupor by not showing it, how about following that path and just not show the big illegal hits, eye gouges and crotch chops.

  43. I just saw the video and that wasn’t even a true crotch chop. He had his helmet in his left hand and both of his hands never got near his crotch. All he did was the body movement part of it without the crotch chop hands part.

So we’re 4-5. Last year we started 3-3 and made the SB.

Last year the Hawks played only 1 starting qb the second half of the season. That was Kap and his team was a tire fire. They won’t get so lucky this year..
