Fisher says Foles “eventually” will be under center again for the Rams

The Nick Foles era is over. Unless it isn’t.

Although Rams coach Jeff Fisher has benched quarterback Nick Foles for Case Keenum, Fisher told reporters on Monday that Foles will be back. Not could be back. Will be back.

“I need more production and it starts with that position,” Fisher said. “As I told Case, he doesn’t have a short leash. We’re going to let him play. We’re going to use his legs and let him make some plays.”

But while the leash isn’t short, there’s apparently still a leash.

“Nick also understands that he eventually will be under center for us again,” Fisher said. “But this is my decision based on what I think is best for this team offensively is to go this direction.”

Like all decisions, this one is still subject to change.

“I’m not saying this is week-to-week, but this is what’s best right now for our team as we move forward from a production standpoint offensively,” Fisher said. “They all need to play better. The receivers need to play better. The tight ends need to play better. [Tackle] Greg Robinson needs to play better. They all need to play better. Nick didn’t fumble the ball on the 17-yard line, nor did he give up two explosive plays for over 80 yards. It’s not his fault. We all need to play better. But I’m confident that right now this is the right decision for us as we move forward.”

The next question is whether the Rams regret the decision to bring Foles to St. Louis, or the decision to give him amodest contract extension. He wasn’t asked those questions; Fisher answered them pre-emptively.

“By no means do we regret the trade,” Fisher said. “By no means do we regret the extension. Nick is a good quarterback. He’s captain of this football team. But at this point right now, based on where we are offensively, I feel this is the direction we have to go.”

It’s the right decision, and it always makes sense to make a change instead of compounding a bad situation. But it’s hard not to wonder whether the Rams will move on from Foles after the season, regardless of whether he makes it back under center this year. With running back Todd Gurley and receiver Tavon Austin becoming the focal point of the offense, the Rams could make a good quarterback look great.

Then again, they’ve somehow made their average quarterback look bad so far this year.

  1. Mike Zimmer thinks he should go back and look at the tape before making an emotional decision 😉

  2. Havent seen one snap of a Rams game this season, but I can imagine how it looked. Foles takes the snap backpeddles, n then throws a ball off his back foot that seems to float for an eternity. Bradford isn’t the answer here in Philly, but at least he stands in the pocket and actually throws the ball like a real QB.

  3. Fisher is the most overrated coach in the history of football. He must be a great interviewer because someone these teams forget to look at his resume. Perennial 8-8.

  4. Remember when Fisher acted like the smartest man in the room trotting all of the guys he got in the RGIII trade out at half time?

Years after the trade that was supposed to make the Rams a perenial playoff team, they are no better than the Redskins and in fact while the Redskins are on the way up, the Rams are on the way down.

The only thing Fisher is good at is directing Gregg Williams and his goons to injure opposing players.

Fisher is a joke and he’s getting what he deserves.

  5. Fisher may have an average record, but given the state of the Rams before he took over, they’re a much more competitive team now than they were in the Linehan, Haslett, and Soagnuolo days.

They just need to work on consistency cause they seem like they always play to the level of their opponent. Like they would probably play a good game against the Pats but play horribly against the Lions

  6. Prediction: Keenum will not relinquish the starting position. Foles will be cut or traded in the off-season simply because of his contract. He would be a fine backup, but not with the salary he currently has.

Ummmm it’s time to get creative because someone always says the same thing whenever Fisher’s name comes up on this site. I think we all get it by now.

  8. Yeah you’re right…

He took them from a 2-14 team to an 8-8 team.

Problem is we are right too…

He’ll never be better than 8-8. Ever. Ask Titans fans.

It took an illegal forward lateral to get Fisher into the only Super Bowl appearance of his 30 year career. Total fluke. The music city miracle never would have happened in today’s NFL with instant replay.

  9. Attention NFL owners! Is this the organization you want for the LA market? “Stan the Scram” may know real estate, but look at the records of his pro teams. I hope the owners say”no” and he sells the team to someone like Mark Cuban. The Rams have risen to the level of the Browns.

  10. With Case Keenum playing in front of him I would say thats a pretty solid bet he’ll get another chance….

  11. why would a coach bench a guy and then commit that he’ll get his job back? Shouldn’t the best guy play? Are you going to yank Keenum if he lights it up next week? It doesn’t make any sense.

It’s very hard to get creative with cold hard facts. But, maybe the fun fact that Fisher has had only 6 winning seasons in 20 years as a head coach is more down your alley.

You read that right, 30% of the time he wins more games than he loses! Yikes.

Actually, that play happened the season that the NFL brought back instant replay to the game and that particular play was reviewed and upheld.

    not anymore!!!!!!!

  15. Foles will be back in no time. Just needs to pay Williams bounty money, and his defense will take Keenum out.

    Hahaha great memory!

Do you know who called that game?

    Phil Luckett.

The same referee who blew the Thanksgiving coin toss.

Not sure if that helps my argument or yours.

  17. No he won’t. You’re going to get fired in about a month and a half, and the next coach is going to realize Foles isn’t that good. My question is why not try Manion, the rookie.

  18. In the offseason, I strongly advocated for Case to be the starting QB. Everything I saw said he was the man to lead our team(based off of our options). Now we’ll have a chance to see. Couldn’t be more excited!! This guy is accurate, has good zip on the ball and he can scoot. Only downside is his height, but I’m not worried about that. His other attributes will make up for that deficiency. Go Keenum!!

  19. Think about it if foles truly was a franchise type QB would the Eagles dare ever trade him, they wath him everyday and knew what they had.
Nick Foles little run in philly was that of a utility bench baseball player who came in and had a couple of nice games, but don’t get it confuse that he was ever an everyday player much less a franchise one to be exact.
    .

  20. Case Keenum is a name that just kind of screams out “crappy backup or 3rd string QB.” Weren’t you a Pro Bowler 2 years ago Foles, what the heck are you doing getting benched for Case Keenum?

  21. So the Eagles are doing how good with the Bradford side? Undefeated? #1 in NFC? #1 NFC East ummm no so wtf you banging drums about the trade basically sucked for both sides as neither will make a run in playoffs if they even get in. SMH

  22. All these people claiming Fisher is an 8-8 coach. When do the fans in St. Louis ever get to see that? Maybe never? We never have.

The Rams needed to build an offensive line. Instead they did the worst draft in the league, plus committed the Bradford savings elsewhere.

When you have a line that can’t block and receivers that can’t catch, you’re going to ruin any quarterback. Which made it silly to pump guaranteed money into Foles.
