Rex Ryan: Can we win the division? No, the Patriots will win the division

AP

Bills coach Rex Ryan admits that his team is only competing for a wild card spot, and that the Patriots will win the AFC East.

Talking today about the Bills’ upcoming matchup with the Patriots, Ryan said a win will be big to keep the 5-4 Bills in the playoff hunt, but he doesn’t think it’s realistic to expect them to catch the 9-0 Patriots.

“Right now we’re second in the division,” Ryan said. “We’re gonna do whatever we can. Does that give us the opportunity to win the division? No. They’re gonna win the division. I don’t see them losing four games. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see it happening.”

Ryan was then asked if he’s conceding the AFC East to the Patriots.

“No, I’m just telling you the facts. The only thing I’m focusing on is beating them right now, on Monday night. And we ain’t conceding that, I promise you,” Ryan said.

Ryan is right: The Patriots are going to win the AFC East. But it’s a little surprising to hear Ryan admit it.

  1. Immediately after this statement, Rex spilled more spaghetti sauce on his shirt, and continued speaking very loudly with his mouth full.

  2. He’s not wrong. This is a Bills fan saying this.

Even if the Bills were to improbably win every last game left, including the Patriots on Monday night, the Patriots would have to lose 4 out of their last seven. They’re the better team this year.

But hey, once you get to the playoffs all bets are off. The Ravens and Giants both barely squeaked into the playoffs before their Super Bowl runs. Just get us into the Wild Card Rex…we’ve been waiting 15 years.

  3. Terrible question. If Rex says “yes we are winning the division” he looks ridiculous. He answered it quickly, correctly.

It honestly was the perfect answer to a bad question – the Bills aren’t fooling themselves regarding their current position. They are a good team looking to make the playoffs, and anything can happen once they are in. They just have to worry about what they are doing, realize they need a wild card to get in, and there’s still work to be done to make it happen.

  4. THIS JUST IN: Rex is not dumber than a box of rocks.

In spite of the goof ball persona Rex can do simple math. NE is 4 games up in the loss column with 7 to go. While the logic coming from him may sound surprising think about it, no one should ever have assumed the guy is an idiot just because he is goofy at times. That’s the take away from this.

    this year??!!

    😆

  6. What have they done to the Rex we all know and love?

What happened to all the outrageous statements and claims? I don’t even think he has made a SB win prediction this year ONCE in the LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS!

Someone needs to remind Rex the only reason he is useful in the NFL is to provide entertainment so he better start getting back to it!

  7. He’s right. Why spew that brainless rhetoric? Players are not stupid, they know NE isn’t going to lose 6 or their last 7.

No point chasing an unobtainable goal and distracting yourself from the one in sight.

  8. “They’re the better team this year.”

    ——–

As opposed to all the other years, of course, when the Bills ran away with the division

  9. All Rex jokes aside—and man they’re fun–Rex has always struck me as a guy who practices delusion, but not self delusion.

I’m okay with the Patriots being the worst 9-0 team ever. It’s still WAY, WAY better than being 4-5.

What’s the matter, is the illustrious Dan Campbell Era underway in Miami not yet sufficiently alleviating your irrational hatred of the Patriots?

That’s OK–no need to reply. We already know the answer.

  13. Rex is a loudmouth, but he’s not stupid he knows the Patriots pretty much have the division in the bag he is just focusing on getting one of the two wildcard spots. He’s just focused on making sure the Bills maintain a decent record to obtain that last wildcard spot and honestly given their schedule I can see them winning 5 more games and getting the last wildcard spot behind the Steelers. I see this going down to the wire because Rex will coach this game like he’s doing it for his job.

  14. How many years has #BillsMafia been waiting for a coach who concedes the division after nine games?

  15. chippy, how’s that Miami team doing that you told us in the off season was going to win the AFC East?

  16. Gotta love the nerdy little reporter trying to gain some headlines for himself by immediately asking “Are you conceding the division?”

And they wonder why these coaches don’t give them any respect.

  17. How many haters had the Patriots 9-0 to start the season? I know many of you had them at 0-4.

If you bet $100 on that sure thing, the Patriots losing, beginning in week one and then doubled down each week given your absolute certainty that the Patriots were going to lose, you would be at a negative $25,600 going into Monday night’s game against the Bills. Tell us, are you going to let $51,200 ride?

    Vegas must love you guys.

  18. the best part of this is that he says the pats wont lose 4 games so he cant win the division.

hey rex you would also need to win all your games also, good luck with that as a 5-4 team

just quit and become the patriots water boy, you know you dream of being on the patriots every night

  19. Rex is trying the George Costanza do-the-opposite-of-whatever-you-think-is-the-right-move strategy, but I doubt he can stay bottled up until game time. Eventually he’s gonna blow.

  20. Wow, someone from the Bills finally saying what everybody already knows and has know since the season began (except for Bills fans of course). Stunning.

  21. “The Patriots may be the worst 9 – 0 team ever in the NFL.”

And very possibly the only 19-0 team ever in the NFL.

Sucks to be your team, doesn’t it?!

  22. Nice to see Rex saying something rational about the Pats.

Even if the Bills were to win all 7 of their remaining games, it is highly unlikely that Pats will lose enough games that the Bills could take the div.

Nothing wrong with that and saying they’ll do their best to get a wild card.

Actually, that distinction goes to the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

After 9 games they had only played 1 team to finish with a winning record (KC finished 8-6) and not one team made it to the playoffs. It was the most cupcake schedule in history.

  24. Always talking…these talkative coaches never win anything…blah blah blah…I’ll take the insensitive media resistant coach over these talkative dudes any day

  25. The Bills will make the playoffs hopefully this year. Whether they do or not, one thing is for sure, they will never have the moniker of “Cheaters” tied to their name for football eternity like the NE Cheaters do and always will…..

  26. Rex Ryan is refreshing. He’s the only coach in the entire league that I’ll listen to for more than 2 seconds and that includes my team’s own coach.

Yes, the undefeated defending SB champs with the number 1 offense and the number 4 defense are just the worst…..lol….you wish your team was that bad.

  28. Good job if Ryan says something that makes the Patriots a little more complacent. It won’t, but it won’t hurt either.

Much better than saying the Patriots are a bunch of cheating losers who will choke the next time they play the Bills.

  29. Another case of damned either way. If he said yes they can win the division, the headline would be “Rex says Bills will win division” and that would be met with ridicule too.

  30. I remember Rex a few years back declaring the Jets playoffs hopes were dead… Then they advanced to the Conference Championship.

The Patriots cheating does not excuse Buffalos cheating.

    John Steven Moore:

“I was the special teams coach for the Buffalo Bills in the early 1980s. In our pregame warm-up, as we prepared to play the New England Patriots, the wind was blowing hard. I figured we could create a wind tunnel if we opened the east-side tunnel door of the stadium when New England was kicking against the wind. I worked with our equipment managers and told them, on my signal, to open the doors. Thinking back about it, I do feel a little bad for the New England punter. On his first punt against the wind, the ball came off his foot nicely, but then the wind punted it right back at him. In a game with dozens of consequential plays, sometimes it’s just one that can make a big difference. I used the wind to our advantage. We won the game and that’s why I only feel a little bad.”

“You are what your record says you are”.

    -Bill Parcells

    Undefeated is undefeated.

  33. So he gets trashed for saying he wants to beat the Pats, then he gets trashed for giving an honest answer that the Pats will win when asked the question?
The hypocrisy regarding sports is just unbelievable….
its not hard to see why some of the more outspoken people in sports have little filter..

They are gonna get trashed anyways so why not say something to get people talking….

  34. The math for the Bills winning the division shows that it is not impossible, just improbable.

The remaining schedule for the Patriots is:

Buffalo, Denver, Philly, Houston, Tennessee, New York (Jets), and Miami.

While mounting injuries could make things more difficult on the Patriots, anything short of losing Brady doesn’t result in losing four of those seven.

  35. “Another case of damned either way.”

So, the argument is that Rex is so miserable stupid he couldn’t have come up with response that doesn’t make him look like a clown? Like

“I’m only focused on winning the next game, and that’s against the patriots. You keep on winning and the rest will take care of itself”

There, see how easy that was? The bills, contrary to popular belief, really didn’t need to go to Barnum and Bailey’s for their last coach if the minimum requirement was at least to get someone that doesn’t say stupid things all the time, they could have just put a sign out in front of any local 7 & 11.

  36. I wish, that just one time, Captain Obvious would shut up. I’d make a “foot in his mouth” comment but it would probably result in a Rexgasm.

#BillsMafia: Just like the real thing, only they’re not intimidating, have no code of honor, and wear zubaz while committing drunken acts of buffoonery that make other NFL fans cringe.

  37. Love how Rex tells it the way it is. People seem to think it’s fun to crack little jokes about him doing so but I appreciate his honesty

Yes, as opposed to Pre-Brady when they were considered the laughingstock of the division.

If anyone thinks that a QB, even a legendary all time great, can’t suddenly hit a wall at 38 hasn’t been watching very many Broncos games.

  41. “The Patriots may be the worst 9 – 0 team ever in the NFL.”

Lol there it is, the most stupid thing I’ll ready today. Chippy is usually good for at least one of those every week.

  42. Giants were 10-0 blowing out teams until Plax shot himself and then they looked like (and became) a significantly weaker team (one and done 1 seed).

Without Edelman, the Pats look just as limited. I’d be concerned if I were a Pats fan.

A little prep H for you Hateriods sir?

  44. Unfortunately Rex is just not professional. He’s fun to listen to for sure, but he has no plan for what he is trying to communicate… ever. He just says what comes to mind at the time.

There’s more to being an NFL coach then instinct and emotion.

Uhhh….just this season, back on 9/20 “the Buffalo Bills illegally used artificial stadium noise to attempt (unsuccessfully) to slow down the Patriots offense”.

Not to mention all the other cheating in the past (faking injuries, and others).

If nothing else, Rex’s foot fetish warrants a Bill’s asterisk.

Beware Pats…. if the Bills make the playoffs….! Start looking over your shoulder.

    —————

Are Bills fans really in a position to be trash talking Patriots fans? I don’t think so.

  47. Hate on Rex all you want but at least he doesn’t cheat. Nowhere near as bad as Bell-A-Cheat.

  48. Maybe this is Rex is trying to put some kind of hillbilly hex on the Pats. Since virtually every one of his other predictions has been wrong so far, maybe he figures proclaiming them as the division winners now will cause an epic collapse.

  49. Smart move.

Ryan now has his team focused on the immediate chance of squeezing out a win and telling his team they are shooting far a more realistic goal of being a wild card entry into the playoffs.

  50. Where’s the controversy here? He was asked a question and answered it, in pretty good detail as well. I think the author of this piece did a good job misrepresenting what he did say, though. Nothing new there.

  51. Gives honest answer about 9-0 team while coaching 5-4 team…..gets accused of quitting on the season because he spoke facts…unreal….I’d rather hear this than the cowboys lying to themselves thinking they have a shot in the east…

  52. I think its safe to assume that until Brady retires the Pats are odds on favorite to win the division.

  53. We rip coaches when they use “coach speak” now we rip them for being honest. They can’t win. The Arm chair QB’s are never happy

  54. Ive been a Pats fan since 1960 when games were in Fenway Park… We really Sucked…. Rex knows .. he has a shot at the play offs, Its then a one game tournament then and every thing can happen… Cut the loud mouth sob some slack…

  55. The only way the Bills win the division is if Brady gets hurt. That is the only possible way the Patriots drop 4 of 7, and a BB coached team will still not lose that many games.

  56. Rex doesn’t give up on a season until the very last second ticks off the clock. I know he can be a clown, but I thought his answer to the question was spot-on.

  57. Wrecks loves mugging for the camera….and…..Wrecks is completely delusional. He believes the words he utters at press conferences take the pressure off his team. While Belichick is scheming up a storm, Wrecks is dreaming up locker room speeches because in the modern NFL, all it takes is for players to want to run through a wall for their coach?
Wrecks honestly believes mind games is all it takes.

  58. When Brady hangs them up, senility begins to overtake Belichick, and all those NE fans they showed on Sunday Night a couple weeks ago who aren’t old enough to drive come crashing down into reality, I’ll be sad for those individuals. They’ve proven themselves to be worthy opponents on the field, and those poor little tike, we’ll they don’t know any better, how could they. That being said, the vast majority of football fans are going to remember all of it. And that football fans is gonna be a wicked haad pissa for chowda heads.

  59. Rex Ryan was being asked a question.. so naturally..I just blurt out..”shut up Rex”..then I heard that..I couldnt believe it. Rex Ryan said something that makes sense. Finally he made sense. To the ire of his peers im sure. “We cant win”..awesome rex

  60. Rex may be goofy as goofy gets, but he got 92 comments out of us plus hundreds of thumbs up/down! He’s good for football because he makes it fun and makes us laugh. Oh, and sometimes his teams play good ball.

Almost forgot, the Pats ARE the worst 9-0 team ever but I wish my team was THAT bad.

  61. When BB and Brady retire in the next 3-5 years will we really enjoy watching 8-8 football teams playing in the playoffs year after year? I don’t want parity I want dynasties to reign in the NFL otherwise it will be very BORING.

  62. Patriots fans are like a pack of hyenas. How many of you guys and girls MUST respond to jchip’s absurdity?

Rex is attempting a Jedi-mind-trick on the Pats. It won’t work. Not because Bill’s a Jedi, as Pats fans would claim. But simply because Rex isn’t either.

  63. “Once the Pat’s win their division, which happens to be one of the weakest in the league they will start their cheating ways at every turn.”

That’s funny spuky, most of the rest of us actually know that the AFC East is the only division with 3 winning teams and the 4th is just below .500.

But the amusement factor of your post is very high!

  64. rooog8 says:

Hard to win the division when you have cheaters in it that always take 1st.

I know, right? Them Jet’s, Bills and Fins keep cheating and DON’T win first! You would think that with the Jet’s, Bill’s and Fin’s cheating that they would at least give the Patriots a challenge!
