NaVorro Bowman to Seahawks fans: “You can’t keep a good man down”

AP

On Sunday, 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman returns to Seattle for the first time since he suffered a serious knee injury during the 2013 NFC title game. On Friday, Bowman reflected on the injury and its immediate aftermath with reporters.

The injury happened as Bowman was recovering a fumble near the Seattle end zone. Somehow, he held onto the ball after his knee was badly twisted, tearing the ACL. (Due to a bad call, the fumble and recovery didn’t count — and the play wasn’t reviewable.)

“The knee’s already done, so hold onto the ball is what I wish I would have done, to help my teammates,” Bowman said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Maoicco then asked Bowman about the fact that Seahawks fans threw popcorn on him after he was injured.

“I remember it, and that’s been with me for a while,” Bowman said. “No matter who gets hurt, you want to make sure they get back up on their feet and show some sign of respect, and I don’t think the Seahawks fans did that at all. So you can’t keep a good man down is basically my message to them.”

They now may have a new message to Bowman come Sunday, and it probably won’t be an apology. Even though it should be.

  1. Classless fans of a crap organization. Too bad the fans never got used to winning to learn class, their window was just too small.

  2. Give Seattle fans a break. Most of them had never experienced winning, so they just don’t know how to act. Seattle actually has a lot of nice people, maybe just the idiots attend football games. Probably could say that about a lot of cities. Lol

  3. I’ve been a season ticket holder for 16 years, and I agree that was a very classless act. But, come on, let’s not blame the actions of one or two idiots on the other 59,000 people that attended that game. On another note, that play by Navorro was absolutely unbelievable.

  4. Which, as we’ve seen from comments.. the “12th” is in indeed their age.

As far as injured players go: Looking at you Eagles fans.

  5. For the record Navarro Bowman and other Niner fans, if you look at the video of Bowman being wheeled back to the locker room, you will notice a man stumble and fall dropping his popcorn everywhere, including a few kernels that fell on Bowman.

It was accidental and it doesn’t represent 12’s who know what a great player and person Navarro Bowman is. True Seahawks fans have been rooting for your knee to heal and for you to be back on the gridiron. But it was NOT purposeful. Have a great game this Sunday Navarro!

  6. Vacouversportsfan— you’re exactly the kind of 12 that Seahawk fans don’t like.

    —- from a fellow 12

  7. I’ll apologize on behalf of the classless fans that displayed poor sportsmanship when Bowman got injured. I was disappointed in them. That is unacceptable behavior.
Also for Baldwin’s SB td celebration.
Also for letting frustration after the turnover at the end of the SB leading to fighting.
    Also for the replacement refs.
Also for Sherman’s post game Crabtree rant.
    That should about cover it.

One more, I’m sorry for Bowman’s misfortune of still being on the 49ers. He’s like the band on the Titanic–still playing as the ship goes down.

  8. What a couple of Seahawks fans did was wrong, but Bowman may want to talk to his own fans who beat people bloody in their own stadium all the time. No mention of that in this article.

  9. Your a loser for even saying this Bowman! I am a huge hawks fan and your my favorite NFL LB. I for one was happy as hell that beast mode fumbled the next play bc it wasn’t fair the seahawks retained possession when you clearly stripped the ball.

With this kind of non sense it’s hard to even like you and your my favorite NFL LB. ONE FAN, ONE FAN spilled some popcorn on you as you were carted off the field. I know many fans who were their and they spoke up after they saw some popcorn go over the edge. We DID not like or condone it and definitely doesn’t represent our fan base. We cheered as you were carted off as a sign of respect. Since your so delusional maybe you should realize their is NO rivalry anymore were back to where we always are and that’s fighting to win the NFCW and your back to where you always are and that’s fighting for a top 5 pick.

The 12th man isn’t some crazy beats by dre mob. Should we assume every niners fans is a gang banging criminal who beats up helpless men in restrooms or stabbing or shootings etc etc..? Your weak for even making this statement. One or two fans do NOT represent our fan base and you ARE NO VICTIM blame Mr concussion Reid for diving directly into your knee not fans.

Disappointed he would even make such an obviously ignorant comment. Not only did I wish you well but said so on many occasions same with every other hawks fan I know. I hope you regain your old form quite frankly I want you to get the massive payday you’ve earned.

But this comment is flat out weak and misguided.

  10. The actions of a few should not overshadow the actions of the many, every team has a few classless AHs within their fan base & 99.99% of us are better than those few.

I was saddened when I saw your injury and I’m glad you have recovered and look forward to many great games ahead for you, and for us.

    Signed: a Seahawks fan!

  11. Yes there are dozens of fans hanging over the tunnel exiting the stadium lets get all butthurt because a few kernels of popcorn fell down and act like its a scumbag filled fan base.

    Gimme a break

  12. Any grown man who wears a Seahawk’s jersey with a ’12’ on it should donate his organs to someone who will put them to better use.

Hope they enjoyed the 1 year “dynasty.”

    ***************
There have been three teams in the entire league who have gone to the SB three times in the last 10 years:

    Seahawks: Lost 2*, Won 1
    Patriots: Lost 2, Won 1
    Steelers: Lost 1, Won 2*

(*SB 40, the worst officiated SB in NFL history. Google it if you don’t believe me. Seahawks should have won that one too.)

So…while I think “dynasty” may be a bit of a stretch, they’re one of the top 3 teams over the last decade. Unless you’re a fan of one of the teams listed above, your opinion means zilch.

  14. As a recent Seahawk fan from Japan I am very impressed with the Seahawks. I am not sure why Mr Bowman is being rude to loudest fans in the national football league. Mr Bowman will have to deal with #46 next game who is 280 pounds and capable of hitting tacklers very hard. I wish both teams good play. Go Seattle Seahawks.

While I side with Seattle in all areas (unless they’re facing the Giants) to say that no one else’s opinions mean zilch if their team isn’t one of those three is ludicrous.

Because last I checked, the Giants are the only team that has won TWICE in that time span.

  16. People get murdered outside of the Santa Clara stadium, but let’s talk about popcorn. Idiots.

  17. I am a Seahawk season ticket holder and was at that game. My seats are in sec. 114 which is the section closest to the visitors tunnel. One idiot fan threw popcorn and was immediately pointed out and kick out of the game. The rest were standing and clapping as almost all fans do.

That being said, Bowman is a beast and I am glad I will be able to watch him compete this Sunday. I would be bitter too if I was him and don’t blame him.

I can’t stand the 9ers, but dislike fans who act like idiots even more.

  18. I think most all Seattle 12’s should start their sentences with:

    “As a recent Seahawk fan…”

Did you see this? I was told some kid knocked it over.

  20. You know, the thing to remember is that five years ago most of those ‘diehard’ fans didn’t give a crap about the Seahawks and wouldn’t have known the way to the stadium in the first place.

And five years from now, they’ll be right back to not caring.

  21. It was a classless act by a classless individual. In 30 years of attending NFL games in 2/3 of the cities in the league I have to say I have seen at least a few people in every stadium that I have no doubt would have done something equally moronic if given the ‘opportunity’. Fools are among us everywhere we go, vancouversportsbra here for instance

  22. The world is full of morons but they guy that tossed his popcorn is also the drunk jerk at the family BQ. Or the lame loud mouth in the line in the grocery store hitting on the checker.

  23. As a 49ers fan, I know not all Seahawks fans are A holes. It was classless how Bowman was treated. It’s sort of like when people get famous and start acting like a– clowns. That’s what happened to Seattle. Relevant for the first time in their sports history, the team and fans got a little ahead of themselves. I mean, when Arizona had the ball, the 12’s, as they now call themselves, were awfully quite. So I hope Bow has a great game.

  24. “largenthanlife”, not a niners fan in the least but are you kidding me a “titanic” reference. Your team is one game better than the niners. And if any team is about to sink into oblivion it’s the hawks…

  25. One of the most egregious non-calls I have ever seen was when Bowman recovered that ball and was down by contact and the Seahawks players hit him very late after he was already down. That should have been an unsportsmanlike penalty for a hit on a defenseless player. Seahawks and their fans are classless. Starts with Pete Carroll. The rat is about as big a jerk as their is in football.

  26. Even if a classless Seahawks fan dropped popcorn on an opposing player… I find it ironic the 49ers fanbase calling any other teams fan classless… Murder anyone???

  27. The knee’s already done, so hold onto the ball is what I wish I would have done
    ——————————————————-
You did hold onto the ball. And the refs blew the call.

  28. Jesus. People really hate the Hawks. Maybe it’s because of how dominate they’ve been the last three years. Actually that is exactly why. The truth is Seattle has had a great fan base for decades, it’s only recently that the media has picked up on this and the team has been good enough to warrant the attention. I hate the 9ers but Bowman is a beast and has the respect of everyone here in Seattle. This was the work of one A-hole and that is that. Dynasty is a strong word, but considering this team is so young you’d be stupid not to think this team won’t be contenders for the next 5-10 years. And that’s what scares the haters. RW has flat out dropped the ball this year, that’s the truth, but the kid isn’t anywhere near the prime of his career. Neither is that defense. So go ahead, keep on hating. Any fan would be happy to have their team in this position and we aren’t going to apologize for it.

  29. Also it was like 3 kernels of popcorn. The guy just destroyed his knee and was in agony. I sincerely doubted 3 pieces of popcorn falling on to him even registered. Let’s make a big deal out of it though crybabies.

  30. I would just like to point out the article’s reference to a blown call that went in Seattle’s favor…so much complaining about the refs from Seahawks fans this year. NFL refs are terrible and all teams get screwed. Your mediocre season is not their fault.

    *******************
And you would be wrong on both counts.
Safeco, sold out since 2003. Will continue to be sold out.
Earlier this season when Navorro returned to the field I was making comments about how nice it was to see him out there.
Navorro is a great player, I enjoy watching him play, but if he holds a grudge against the Seahawk players or the fans because 1 idiot dropped/spilled popcorn on him then he needs to grow up a bit.
Posters from other teams need to grow up as well if they think this one fan represented the 12s.

  32. They were just confused. Most of the fans didn’t even know they had a pro American football team in the city. They thought they were suppose to act the same as they do for soccer games.
Just give them some time. They’ll retreat back to their Starbucks and needle clinics and will have forgotten about this silly seahawk episode.

  33. I love to see how you lemmings can be led around…it’s like you have a bull-ring in your noses with “Pull here!” inscribed on it.

A kid went to the end of the row to see Bowman being carted into the tunnel and kicked over a container of popcorn that had been set there. But don’t let the truth interfere with your God-given right to believe whatever tabloid headline you come across.

Seahawks fans are talking real tough for a 4-5 team*.
    ———
One that “should” be 3-6 had the refs not gifted them a win against the Lions. Come to think of it, what winning teams has Seattle beat?

  35. I can’t believe that anyone is still talking about that popcorn that got SPILLED by the kid who was getting bumped by people behind him. The media tries to make it look like 10,000 fans threw popcorn at him simultaneously and every Seahawk fan in the world was responsible for it. Grow up Bowman, and tell Eric Reid to stay away from your legs during the game.

  36. Anyone else notice how: “The actions of a few, shouldn’t cast negativity on the whole,” only applies to Sports fans?

    Perspective, get some.

  37. I believe in Kharma, and Bowman got his that day. Just before the game, Bowman ran up to the seats and grabbed a sign held by a lady that said Seahawks on it and Bowman ripped it to shreds. Justice lives!

  38. It was a year ago, get over it. Move on. New game new year. Whoever asked that question is an idiot. Talk about the game and the task at hand. Typical 49er Bay Area Media.

  39. Did you see this? I was told some kid knocked it over.”
    ===========================

This is the myth that Seahawks fans have been telling themselves to make them feel better about their classless action. It wasn’t one fan and it didn’t fall over the rail “accidentally”.

How fitting that the 12s stands for their record in the Super Bowl

    Who?

Well looky here…another “fan” new to football. Welcome, but aren’t you gonna be late for your “welcome to football” orientation?

  41. @jw619–
When this game ends you’ll see how much further apart these two teams are than their current records suggest. Anyway, it was intended as trash-talk for division rival niner fans. Bowman is still playing while the niners ship is going down, the Seahawks record doesn’t change that fact.
