Lingering shoulder soreness led to Kaepernick IR designation

AP

The decision to end the season of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick surprised everyone, and for good reason. Kaepernick had been listed as probable for Sunday’s game at Seattle with a left shoulder injury. He fully participated in practice all week, making the sudden roster move even more of a shock.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Kaepernick initially reported minor shoulder soreness after the October 4 loss to the Packers. By Monday, however, he had improved enough that no treatment was needed — and thus the injury was not disclosed.

When Kaepernick returned last Monday from the bye week break, he complained once again about soreness in the shoulder. The 49ers medical staff determined the source of the soreness, and treatment commenced.

On Friday, Kaepernick told the team after practice that the shoulder was not feeling any better. He inquired as to the options. That resulted in discussions between the team and Kaepernick’s representatives, culminating in the decision to place Kaepernick on injured reserve.

Multiple reports indicate that Kaepernick will have surgery on the shoulder. In theory, he could be released from injured reserved, either with an injury settlement or through unilateral action by the team (subject to a potential grievance disputing that he’s healthy).

It had been believed that Kaepernick at some point would play again this year, if for no reason other than to showcase him for a potential trade. He remains expected to be traded or released before his 2016 base salary becomes fully guaranteed on April 1.

  1. 15 teams in the league are lickin’ their chops at this news. Somebody can NOT wait to sign him. Whether they know how to use his talents will be determined.

I hope it’s a team with a good coaching staff. The league needs more good qbs and way less crap coaches and GMs.

  2. Well, like it or not, he did make it to a Super Bowl and two straight nfc championship games. My bet is a better coach than Tomsula gets him back to form again. Hello Eagles and the read option. This coming from an unbiased Falcons fan….

  3. This is kapernicks people trying to send the illusion that he got benched because he was hurt, when in reality he just can’t read a defense to save his life or carrer.

  4. This has been an odd year for the QB’s with the exception of Mr Bundchen and his Patriots. From Romo to Rodgers from Payton Manning to Kap to RGIII. Looking back 2 years the only 2 anyone seen was RGIII and an aging Manning.

  5. This guys horrible let’s not forget he was horrible last year with Harbaugh so that excuse is gone and for those saying he got to 2 NFC championship games well so did Mark Sanchez and I can run off plenty of bad QB’s that have super bowl rings like Dilfer,Brad Johnson etc etc …it’s a team sport

  6. Gabbert played the entire 2012 season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder wearing a brace, (until he suffered nerve damage in his throwing arm and had to shut down). I guess tattoos and weightlifting only make you look tough.

  7. kaps people could see the writing on the wall and concluded that only bad things could happen to their client were he to again be put out there behind the current offensive line and with the talented group of offensive playmakers the current lineup boasts….

and now that the trade deadline is over, the league will wait until he’s released prior to his next contract payout day.

  8. Hopefully his next team gets him out of the weight room and into the film room.
No matter what, he’ll never sniff another contact like he has now. I see a clipboard in his near future, and frequent flyer miles piling up as the next league-wide tryout quarterback/camp arm.

  9. I really believe the 49ers are actually run by Denise DeBartolo. She didn’t like the team’s personality under Harbaugh and wants a choir boy team with coaches that follow orders regardless of the team’s record. Purging Kap is part of the master plan. She has her new stadium and the bank that goes along with it, so no need to be a winner.

  10. There were some recent off field and non football related things that went on with him. As soon as I saw that, the first thing I thought about was his departure from SF will soon follow. I also think there are some personal issues going on between him and the other players but of course, they will never admit to it.

  11. I had the same thing happen to me. I was standing n front of a mirror, listening to some rap through my beats, kissing my biceps and all the sudden. BAM! Blew my shoulder out and now I need surgery. Hahaha.

Why are so many people thinking Kapernick will be a guy so many teams will want? If their problem is not winning, and they need a quarterback, why would they take a horrible quarterback like Kaepernick? Are so many lacking so much knowledge of football that they refuse to see the gimmick with the read option is over? Is it not apparent that it no longer works? If Kaepernick can’t be a passer now, he will not be taught the skill at this point. Teams would be just as successful turning any player into a quarterback. If you have to teach someone how to play the position, it might as well be someone who isn’t an idiot.

  12. Jerry Jones on line 2, Jerry wants to be cute with Kaep, by signing him to be a permanent back up to his beloved Romo, til Romo turns 50. Jerry could continue to sing in the shower, even if Romo gets hurt, Kaep to the rescue! !

  13. Kaepernick has one of the highest Wonderlic scores in the league. Why can’t he read a defense?

  14. It just seems like Kaepernick couldn’t wait to get out of San Francisco, just like Justin Smith, Anthony Davis, Patrick Willis, and so many others.

  15. I think with the right coaching this guy could get back on track. Harbaugh had him playing pretty well, then he leaves and it’s all a mess. Kaep certainly isn’t the kind of QB to do it all on his own, he needs a good team behind him.

  16. Kaepernick has one of the highest Wonderlic scores in the league. Why can’t he read a defense?
    =======
Because Wonderlic tests aren’t remotely related to football.

  17. As a 49ers fan, this is the best thing that could happen. The season is a disaster, they don’t need a quarterback controversy. Just let gabbert run for his life every play and see if he has any upside moving forward. I don’t see kap playing in San Francisco next season, the downward spiral continues for this franchise.

  18. vikings should probably take a flyer on him. He may not be very good, but at least his hands are bigger than the qb they currently have.

Name a QB that doesn’t need a good team behind him. Only all time greats/hall of fame QBs can take mediocre teams to the playoffs. One of the best QBs of the generation Peyton Manning always had elite weapons.

You either need elite weapons or a great offensive coach that can create a precise offense for the offensive personnel. Kaepernick doesn’t have either of that. He has the worst coaches and the worst offensive line that money can buy. What are 49ers fans mad about…Kaepernick’s inability to create fire out of the twigs the 49er organization has given him to work with?

    ======================================

You don’t take the wonderlic with 300 pound guys rushing you.

  21. What is “lingering” is the day the 49’ers release him. Look for Kaepernick to be let go before March 31st, 2016. I’m guessing that if Kaepernick and the team were doing well he’d have never been placed on IR.

If he got hurt and didn’t recover before April 1st the 49’ers would be on the hook for another year of his contract. Putting him on IR prevents him from practicing or playing. Can’t get hurt that way.

    Shrewd and blatantly obvious.

  22. This is CLEARLY a coaching/offensive fit type of issue.

You don’t go from being a legitimate weapon to completely ineffective in the span of 2 years unless it’s a really rare exception (Josh Freeman).

The first comment is right…..many teams will line up to give him a chance to be a starter. Hopefully for his sake it’s a team with a competent OC and coach that can get the most out of his skills.

I think the Jets and Texans seem like the best options.

  23. When Kap was left to utilize his talents by passing, running and improvising in the first couple of years, he was great doing it his way. He had a great future with the Niner’s and he fit beautifully with the team, and especially with the O line. But management destroyed the overall team, particularly letting the 2 tackles get away. (Iapati now with the Cards). Kap had a problem finding the 2nd or 3rd receiver so they tried to teach him to stay in the pocket in order to find more time. That’s not him! He lost his comfort zone along with the rest of the team and his mgt.

Yes, he’s limited but extremely talented, if they left him alone last year and this one, the record would be a hell of a lot better.

Been a Niner fan since the 70’s (longer than many of your ages) and have watched them carefully – these coaches are the wrong ones and so are the mgt persons making the decisions.

They will likely trade him at the worst possible time for them and him – not fair to him or the fans.

    But I am still Faithful.

    ———————————————

    Because Wonderlic scores mean nothing.

  25. I think there is a error in the headline! The report should read, “I suck” therefore my season/career is over. Now he can kiss his biceps while carrying the clipboard for another team next year! :/

bordner calling the vikes gay??? lol. big hands don’t mean anything! just a myth! maybe your team needs more big d1cks in the shower, but the vikes are fine in that category!

  27. Folks mention that he is a good QB with the right system? The reason he did well, was because he had a good defense, just like Wilson. Take away a good defense, then he is exposed. Kind of sad, as I was hoping he’d mature and grow. He just flatlined. Worse still, he was asked to be a pocket passer. More mobile than Cam, but he isn’t a Mack truck like Cam, and the repeated beatings have made him tight. Maybe new scenery will help him, but he has to learn to read defenses, and throw with conviction. Another running QB getting eaten by the defenses. QBs that last are one’s that have quick mental decision making processes…not sure if there is a training program for that…

  28. Lingering contract issues you mean

There’s no way the 49ers were going to play him and risk triggering the rest of his guaranteed money

Best for all that they declare some minor IR justifying issue
