Thomas Rawls runs over 49ers on way to 29-13 win

The Seahawks played without running back Marshawn Lynch on Sunday, but they didn’t seem to miss him at all against the 49ers.

Thomas Rawls is the man to thank for that. Rawls produced his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and scored two touchdowns to help push the Seahawks back to .500 in a 29-13 victory over the 49ers. Rawls ran for 209 yards and one score and caught three passes for 46 yards and his other score in a win that keeps the Seahawks in the thick of the hunt for a playoff spot in the NFC.

Rawls’s emergence this season may mean that the Seahawks are playing all of their games without Lynch come 2016, but for the near term it means that the team has another offensive weapon at their disposal as they try to grind their way through the assorted troubles that have led to their five losses on the season. It will help if Russell Wilson, who heard some criticism from his own coaching staff last week, has more games like he did on Sunday.

Wilson was 24-of-29 for 260 yards and three touchdowns in an efficient performance that went well with Rawls’s big day on the ground. The blocking wasn’t always great and the Seahawks lost center Patrick Lewis and left guard Justin Britt to injuries late in the game, but the entire offense was sharper than it has been for much of the season.

The defense had its shakier moments as Blaine Gabbert found success throwing to his tight ends to keep the game fairly close through three quarters, but they tightened up in the fourth quarter and Cliff Avril’s sack of Gabbert on a third down midway through the final quarter made the final outcome pretty academic.

Seattle will host the Steelers next week before heading to Minnesota for a game that will likely loom large in the jockeying for playoff spots in the conference.

  1. It’s nice to see the Seahawks successfully ground and pound. Rawls obviously looked good today. The OL consistently opened up running lanes for him and for the most part protected Wilson very well. Wilson, for his part, was a LOT sharper than he was last week.

Hard to judge the defense’s performance — Gabbert had all things considered a successful day but the Niners were never really in it after going down a few scores early.

Hope the injury report on Baldwin comes back with good news as they are pretty thin at WR.

    Go Hawks!

  2. No matter how this season ends, I’ll still be excited that we have found 2 impact rookies on offense. Still Arizona’s division unfortunately. Pile up those W’s boys.

    GoHawks!

  3. Seattle still sucks though…wow, you beat my depleted niners with gabbert who actually has played well so far, but the trolls will spin this and be delusional that they are prime for another run, lmao, you girls are too funny, have fun riding ciaras boy to an 8-8 record…

  4. Good game by Rawls, only five more 200 yd games to tie the record.

Tight Ends keep having their way with this defense and it needs to be addressed if there’s hope for a run to the postseason.

  5. niner fans were getting excited that lynch is going to turn 30 years old soon, then boom Rauls’ comes out of no where to carry the torch

  6. I had no illusions about the outcome of this game but Rawls was impressive. This feels like the Erickson/Nolan/Singletary years again, aka The York reign.

Jed has willingly dismantled our organization with his incompetence and ego. I’m surprised Blaine was serviceable behind an offensive line that gives turnstiles a bad name, the drops, the penalties, just bad football. Expect more of the same Faithful, even with Baalkes draft picks and Tomsula’s play calling we haven’t hit rock bottom yet.

    Go Niners.

  7. Thomas Rawls and Tyler Lockett are some key pieces for Seattle in the future.

I said it at half-time but I want to see Rawls stealing more snaps from Lynch as the year wrap ups he had 3 starts this year – 480 yards and 7 yards per carry.

    Cary Williams sucks.

  8. R. Wilson 24/29 260 yards, 3 TDs, no interceptions, 82% completion percentage and 132.5 passer rating.

But yeah, Wilson’s not elite. he’s just average.

    Riiiiggghhhttttt….

  9. Hawks D better figure out what ails it(beyond the horrible signing of Cra ppy Williams) or the next two weeks could get ugly.

Rawls blew up a good Cinci D and now a bad 9er D. Looks to be the real deal.

  10. The qb’s the seashells have beaten:

    Jimmy Clausen
    Colin Kaepernick
    Matthew Stafford*
    Matt Cassel
    Blaine Gabbert

Go ahead and puff your chest out seashell fans… Lol

We all know what the asterisk is for.

  11. I noticed that there was one thumbs down on the quote that said Jed York is the worst owner in professional sports. Hey I guess Jed really does read these things. I’m sure he will be tweeting soon how not not acceptable this is. ( he is paying millions less in coaching and player salaries) I wonder if he will take credit and say the team is improving or bs us and say Tomsula is a great coach, ( he’s not going to eat the bums salary, no way) and that he has his full support for the next year.
Kap boldin bowman maybe staly and Boone are gone next year as they are paid too much. Our Ohio owners care solely about$, winning costs money, do the the math guys. This is the same crap they did firing mooch.

What makes you think a lil while?
Bennetts going to leave, irvin already said he’s going to be in atl, lynch is gone, book that, petey can’t chomp and pace forever, and your qb has regressed, your wrs suck, and the legion of doom can’t trust each other…but hey, whatever makes you feel good, we can check back in a yr if you would like…

  13. So this guy does well against a very bad Niner defense and is being compared to Lynch? People need to relax, Niners defense couldn’t tackle anyone today and have given up on this season.

  14. that was the worse display of defense I’ve EVER seen from the niners. they look like they didn’t even try and must of forgot their bye week was over. that was a disgusting display. I’m a sad niner fan, but I’m with you til death due us part

  15. So, you define “fairly close” as “never really within less than 10 points”…interesting…

  16. You 9er fans are a hoot…. If the Hawks’ run is over all I can say is at least they got a trophy out of it, unlike the clowns from Santa Clara.

Enjoy watching Michigan regularly rack up more wins than the whiners for the next decade.

    Rawls is a stud!!

This Seahawk fan hopes SF gets back on track. No team should have to put up with the incompetence of upper mgmt like you guys have. I miss the intense rivalry we had & look forward to it coming again. Made for awesome games.

What’s up w/ York, is he looking for a HUGE tax write-off or ?????

  18. If this hastens the departure of Tomsula and Baalke, I consider this loss as a win for the niners.
Comical and inept all at the same time this team

    _____________

    Seriously?

Everybody, according to seashells fans, Ryan Tannehill is an elite qb!

18/19 282 yards, 4 TD’s, no interceptions, 94% completion percentage and perfect 158.6 passer rating…. Not to mention got his jersey into the pro football hof for consecutive completions (25).

Wilson has 1 good game against possibly the worst team in the league and suddenly he’s elite

    RRRIIIIGGGHHHTTT…

    Too easy

  21. As a Seahawks fan all I can say is that they’ve played 10 games and held a 4th quarter lead in every one.

    They have two flaws:

    1. Trusting this o line could come together and play decently. They are decent at run blocking but their pass blocking is inexplicably bad. It’s baffling that they managed to find four or five guys so bad at it all on the same team that are supposedly professionals at their positions.

    2. Trusting Cary Williams could be an LOB quality starter. They should have drafted a DB in round 2 instead of frank Clark. At least a rookie would have the up side of improving. He reminds me of Kelly Jennings who for some reason got more snaps for being as terrible as he was than any crappy bad DB I’ve ever seen.

That line can’t hold up a full game and Williams is a liability and that’s why they can’t hold a lead in the 4th agains a good team. The D us gassed because Wilsons luck eventually runs out as he runs for his life all game and Williams gets picked on in the clutch moments and can’t compete.

  22. @bigticket–

Bennett’s under contract so he can get traded (possibly), get cut (not happening), get injured, hold out or retire. Not sure where you got that he’s leaving. Seattle fans have known that Irvin was (likely) gone since they chose not to extend his contract last year. Lynch, who knows what will happen with him but it’s been unpredictable for the last two years already with him (reportedly) contemplating retirement at the end of the season(s).
Instead of attempting to tear the Hawks future down, maybe there’s a bright spot for the Niners you could highlight. Or are there none?

  23. I think every one of those five incompletions was a very smart throwaway into the sideline to avoid a sack.

This was an almost perfect game from rw. No fumbles, no almost interceptions…just solid…focused. I was starting to criticize but I will close my pie hole about Russell and his personal life for now.

All your posts relating to anything within the state of Washington deserve an *, since its the same drab and mundane BS every time. Nothing new with you.

  25. irvin already said he’s going to be in atl,
    _________

Not sure if you noticed but Irvin didn’t play today while sf got the beatdown.

Oh and Carey Williams is not up to par, he is a liability. Congrats on abusing him twice like everyone does. Old bad technique keeps coming back. He can’t be consistent. Pete has to train his guys from the draft. Old habits are too hard to break. He will be gone next year. Marshawn 10 million will go to the oline…things are just fine.

As much as I love marshawn, part of me wants to get rid of him sooner rather than later because I just don’t think he gives a crap anymore. Wearing Kam chancellor jersey in practice during the holdout said plenty. How dumb was that holdout? How selfish and self destructive…yet here is Marshawn with kams jersey on. Especially after they gave him more last year.

Marshawn doesn’t care anymore and I really like rawls. He has quickness that Marshawn doesnt. That one play today where he cut 90 degrees to the right in a flash was SICK and it had Rhode barber all taking notice. It almost seemed to defy physics. That king of cut/change of direction is supposed to slow you down.

  26. I remember seeing a few Seahawks fans saying they had drafted a young stud in Rawls and he would take over for Lynch. Seahawks haters of course, scoffed at the supposed hilarity of that statement. He did the same thing to the Bengals defense. Kid is legit. If Tyler Lockette can fine tune his route running the Seahawks will be a contender for years and years to come

My bad, didn’t notice them under 20 years of dust.

You’d think a fan base that needs instructions on how to cheer for their team would be smart enough to keep their traps shut about other fan bases.

Remember, quiet on offense, LOUD on defense, and when you hear the foghorn, your 9ers have scored, put down your chardonnay and cheer! LMAO!!

  28. So this guy does well against a very bad Niner defense and is being compared to Lynch? People need to relax, Niners defense couldn’t tackle anyone today and have given up on this season.

Niners D allow 200+ yard rushers often?

Wasn’t drafted, quit trying to understand, try soccer.

  30. And just like clockwork, scmems can’t let a Seahawks post go without trolling. Hey scmems, are you more upset that the Rams lost to the worst team in the league today or that the Seahawks won? Rough day for you, man. So sorry.

  31. Blah blah blah, lets all meet back here at the end of the season and see who’s really right…and evaluate the future of the offseason, we all know changes are coming…

  32. Haters aren’t necessarily factual.

Wouldn’t it be funny if somehow the Seahawks scrapped their way into a wild card spot this year.

If it happened they would be one of the most dangerous wild card teams ever.

  33. Calm down Seattle fans. It’s just San Fran.
They just put their gimmick qb on ir so that they didn’t have to play him ever again, but he does still have swag.
Beat someone who has their stuff together then throw a bandwagon party.

  34. As a Seahawks fan I’m not getting too excited about this win. Yes it’s a win we needed but it was the niners and they are terrible. Wilson played good but when the running game plays good he always does well.

  35. Seattle is still a good team and capable of making a big run. Don’t count them out. This game could have been even uglier for 49ers as Gabbert had a couple easy interceptions dropped.

  36. Mimsey is a Tannehill-lover. It eats at his soul that the Dolphins’ bust pick will never be as good as Russell Wilson.

  37. “Hold on, just one second, your trolling a fan base of a team who has 5 rings when your team has one…. Lol OK.”

This is the Seahawks 40th season while the 49ers have been around 70+ years. Let’s wait and see how they match up in about 2045 or so.

  38. The other option is we can focus on right now and not worry about stuff that happened over 20 years ago.
