Broncos will start Brock Osweiler vs. Patriots

AP

After a solid game in his debut, Brock Osweiler will remain the Broncos’ starting quarterback for at least another week.

Osweiler will start in place of Peyton Manning for Sunday night’s game against the Patriots, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.

The question now facing the Broncos is whether Manning will ever get the starting job back. Although the official word coming out of Denver has been that Manning sat out Sunday because of rib and foot injuries, the reality is that Osweiler looked better on Sunday than Manning has at any point all season. And if Osweiler keeps playing that way, why would he ever give the job back to Manning?

It’s a delicate situation in Denver. Gary Kubiak doesn’t want to say or do anything that would show a lack of respect for his first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback. But Kubiak’s job is to play his best players, and right now his best quarterback is Osweiler.

  1. “But Kubiak’s job is to play his best players, and right now his best quarterback is Osweiler.”

Kubiak’s decision made itself, they need the win to keep pace for a first round bye. No matter how much we all had this one circled on the calendar for the Manning/Brady duel, it is what it is.

Broncos have no shot with Osweiler at the helm against the Pats.
    ———
Have a better shot then they would with peyton, Im pretty sure my grandmother can throw a better spiral at this point.

  3. rmurph45…have you seen peyton manning play this year? They have a much better chance with brock than peyton. I am a patriots fan. I wanted to see peyton for a few reasons. I like to see tom vs paeyton..but more importantly..i wanted to see the patriots win. Now with Brock in..it will be harder.

  4. Same thing happened in New England when Belichick decided Brady was a better option for the Patriots than a recovered former #1 pick Drew Bledsoe. Not saying that Osweiler is the next coming of Tom Brady, but you do have to do what’s best for the team.

Never want to underestimate an opponent, but let’s be honest here, Broncos have no shot with Osweiler at the helm against the Pats.

  6. you guys and the broncos are sure putting allot of faith in this guy after 1 start against a bears team in transition. the Broncos were built to win this season with manning at the helm, if he ever gets close to being healthy enough to play again then he is the only chance they have to win.

  7. Glad I didn’t spring for flights, hotel, & tickets after all. Might yet be an historic game… just not the epic finale between the two greatest of their generation that I was anticipating.

Osweiler is not Brady…and Bledsoe is not Manning.

  9. Osweiller played ok against a very mediocre Chicago team that didn’t have any game film of him to study.

Lets not crown him the next coming of…..well Petyon Manning just yet.

Once DCs around the league have film to work with you may find yourself calling for his removal in short order.

Or maybe he’s the real deal and will prove it, but it takes more than one game.

  10. “Honestly, I think their chances of defeating the Patriots went up with Brock taking snaps and not Peyton”

I think most Pats fans will agree with you. Most of us were really looking forward to the quacking ducks Manning threw in that last game.

And Belichick defenses traditionally struggle against unknown QBs who are thrown out there with nothing to lose. The Pats still usually win those games but a lot of what Belichick does is based on tendencies and past play by a given QB.

Not only was Manning playing abysmally but NE will only have 2 games of film with Osweiler running that offense

    11-5 Brady”

It’s a team sport … not MMA. If Manning was on the Pats the numbers would be reversed.

  13. …..I remember a long, long time ago , in a galaxy far far away a famous QB named Drew Bledsoe was hurt and replaced by a young gun…………What was that guys name?….Oh yeah Tom Brady. Legends get hurt and replaced by possible FUTURE legends.

Did they have a shot with the old man?

  15. I just want my team to win, all of this extra drama is ridiculous. Brock should start if Peyton is hurt/washed up. With that being said, I find it extremely disrespectful and sad how people have just been dancing all on Peyton’s grave this year. I’m confused as to what he’s done to deserve it? Celebrate getting a once in a lifetime TD record? He’s one of the classiest superstar athletes ever. With so much bad QB play in the NFL these days you would think people would show one of the greatest more respect.

  16. Better than Manning at any point this year? Did we forget the GB game and did anyone really watch the game yesterday. The DT touchdown was all DT because for some reason Chicago left him WIDE open in the middle of the field and could not tackle. I am a Broncos fan and a bigger Peyton fan but if he gets healthy (big if) you have to ride him in the playoffs. It’s not like Brock was going deep all day long. The broncos finally ran the ball with some success and most of his passes were short throws. I also find it strange that no one is talking about if Luck gets his job back when he is healthy in Indy. The Colts are winning as many games without him as they did with him.

  17. In an ideal world, if Brock plays really well, Peyton lets the coaches know he can’t play the rest of the year because of injuries, even if he “can’t play the rest of the year because of injuries.”

As the Favre saga goes to show, though, star athletes rarely recognize the end of their careers, even if it’s obvious to the rest of us. This could get ugly.

  18. How much of this is the Broncos not wanting the Patriots to have an up-close view of how depleted Manning is, so that way when the two teams meet in the playoffs, Belicheck will have less data to work with?

  19. Pretty sad how Osweiler is stabbing a legend in the back. Manning deserves to play as long as he wants to instead of having to deal with a backstabber who has done anything in the National Football League, and who did not even do anything in college. Go watch the tape in the Las Vegas Bowl against Boise State, how pathetic he was.

  20. The truth is that Oswhiler is better now.

But if Manning can show glimmers of his old self it would be hard to keep him out come playoff time.

I think that right now the goal for Manning is to prove that his ceiling is at a Peyton Manning level because his floor is sub Ryan Leif.

  21. “It’s a team sport … not MMA. If Manning was on the Pats the numbers would be reversed”

Funny how Manning fans only trot out the old “football is a team sport” line when we’re talking about Manning’s losses.

When the team wins, it’s all about Manning.

  22. Brock’s main weakness at this point – as with most inexperienced quarterbacks – is reading and/or getting flustered by pressure. He misses delayed blitzes, particularly on his blind side, and once the pocket starts to collapse he gets happy feet. His mobility is better than Manning’s of course, but that’s saying nothing at all. Effective scrambling isn’t really in his skill set like it is for Rodgers, Newton, Wilson, or Luck. He’s closer in style to Brady. If they can get him to run the QB sneak as well as Brady does, that’d be a nice plus.

Not saying your wrong but…short week for the Pat’s and they have to travel. Run the ball, play great D, no turnovers or special teams blunders and the broncos have as good a chance as anyone.

I don’t think it has anything to do with putting stock in Osweiler so much as recognizing that Manning wasn’t getting it done.

  25. Jesus, couldn’t they have waited until Saturday to announce this thus forcing NE to prepare for both?????

In fairness, “preparing” for today’s Manning wouldn’t have taken more than 15 minutes.

…the Patriots DBs would have taken longer “preparing” their pick-six TD dances.

  26. Peyton never has been one of the ” classiest.” Over the years he has thrown his teammates under the bus at various times. He threw Reggie Wayne under the bus after his Pick 6 in SB loss to New Orleans. People think that the guy in the commercials is who he is. Fans dont know who he is. To me, he has always come across arrogant. Now that his career is over you will start to see his bitterness come out. He was hoping to win another SB, so maybe he could shake the choker label, but it is not to be

This cracks me up too. “Oh, we better tell our opponent who is playing ASAP!”

  28. I actually thought Osweiler played well. Even if it was just the sorry Bears. 🙂

Well see how he does when he steps up in weight class against the Champs this Sunday night.

  29. Sad that Manning has been hurt and inconsistent this year, but he has shown moments of brilliance. The comeback in the first KC game, the GB game, the 2nd half of the Indy game when Manning was 12-13 for 200+ yards and 2 TDs at 1 point…Brock didn’t show any of that yesterday. Belichick isn’t John Fox, he isn’t going to play conservative and allow Brock 5-10 yard completions all day long.

  30. In 1973 John Unitas was benched for Dan Fouts.
(Unitas was playing for the Chargers) against the Steelers.

Steelers were up 38 – 0. Fouts lead the Chargers to 3 scores. The game ended 38-21 Steelers.

Unitas never saw the field again and Fouts went on to HOF career.

No one was concerned about being disrespect to Unitas. He couldn’t play anymore.

  31. This really does feel like the end of the era.

And I did not expect Manning to break Favre’s record while looking like far more of a shadow of his former self than Favre. Right now I’d say Favre was more relevant at the end than Manning was. Which may be forgotten in the shadow of the record books, but it’s the real story.

Manning on the bench vs. Brady. It doesn’t even seem real.

  32. The problem isn’t the QB, it’s Kubiak’s offense itself. They just don’t produce points. Yesterday they finally had a game where they ran the ball successfully, Osweiler had 2 TDs and no interceptions, and somehow they still only had 17 points to show for it at the end and needed their defense to stop a 2-point conversion to seal the win.

  33. briang123, would you kindly be specific regarding how Brock is ‘stabbing Peyton in the back’?

I’m curious as everything I’ve heard out of Brock’s mouth has been nothing but respectful towards Peyton.

  34. Like anyone believes anything Mortenson has to say! If it is true, please flex this game out! How bout Seattle vs Pittsburg instead? LOL!

  35. Kubiak, what an idiot. But thanks for letting us know in advance so we can spend the whole week preparing and focused on Osweiler, rather than wondering and preparing for both Peyton and Osweiler.

BB is salivating thinking about this. Rookie QBs do not fair well against the Pats.

Osweiler may even come out a little too confident with his first win under his belt.

  36. I’d like to see Manning never start another game again and for Brady to run the schedule (regular and post) and become the all time winning QB in the NFL as he would break the tie between Manning and Favre at 199 for win number 200.

    Go Patriots!
    Go Brady!

The Denver D will be prepared for the P*ts. Osweiler won’t have to be great for Denver to beat the P*ts.

I’m curious to see how the big kid does against a defense that can actually cover and tackle.
    —-

It’s say Chicago was a legit test. They give up less yards/game than New England.

  39. Manning is old and dealing with that every day, but I would imagine the rather sharp decline in performance is due to more than just age. For example, if he has been dealing with the Lisfranc injury for most of the season and it has affected his game more than he was willing to admit to himself because it is his final season. If that is the case, then there is a possibility that coming back relatively healthy would allow him to play much better. The question is, can he get healthy?

  40. My question is this. With the Network having tonight’s game between the Pats and Bills. Where is Scoop Mortensen?? Has he actually been on site at Foxboro trying to get an exclusive with one of the former ball boys??

The man like his network jumped the shark they sacrificed all manner of editorial ethics with deflategate. Chris lost all the respect that he had worked so hard to gain.

wasn’t osweiler back up to tim tebow? and now he’s better than PM? aaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaaha

    No…he wasn’t.

  42. I like this decision since you want to see what the Six-Foot-Eight kid is made of. And if Osweiler keeps the score close, then all the better it will look for him as a starter “to hang with the best” (Brady/Patriots).

  43. The Broncos was 7-2 with Manning at QB. Not too bad.
For an aging Manning, staying at top form for the regular season and into the playoffs is a challenge. Hmm, maybe a rest?
Let Brock get in there and show is stuff. Give Peyton a rest. If Brock has what it takes, well alright. If not, a rested Manning can return.

  44. Manning has had a couple recent games better than Brock. Packers #1, and Colts #2.

I hope Brock can hold the fort down until Manning heals and can play again.

    ===========================

Brady wasn’t BRADY when that change was made, and Bledsoe was probably a better QB at that point than Manning has been this year.

  48. Why do some of you keep saying to rest Manning and get him healthy for the post-season?

That’s the time when you don’t want him to play.

  49. Too bad they scheduled this game so late in the season. There’s always a possibility of injuries but if they wanted this QB match up, it should have been Week 2 or 3 FWIW…

  50. It’s always amazing to see people base comments on what they “know” instead of what they see. It’s a form of prejudice really. You think about Peyton’s career and experience and assume he’s the best guy for the job they have. You think about Brock’s age and experience and assume he can’t be ready. The reality is Kubiak’s offense has been dumbed down on the physical side to accommodate Peyton’s lack of mobility and lack of big arm. It brings the safeties up and takes away a big part of the O. It prevents moving stretched hand offs and bootleg threats. All keys of the offense. Peyton’s lack of mobility hurts the running game. On top of that he is throwing interceptions like he’s the rookie. Brock brings an explosive deep threat, fear of bootlegs and the ability to create when the play breaks down. Even if he throws an interception or two what difference is it from Peyton? On the other hand opening up the offense again will be a huge help. Especially for the defense which we know really wins championships.

  51. Too bad…the only chance my Broncos had was for Manning to come back rested and play like he did against GB. Brock doesn’t stand a chance against Belichik’s Pats.

  52. Late to the comments game here but … Really it’s not about making the decision that guarantees a win. It’s about making the decision that gives you the best chance to win. Right now, that’s Brock.

  53. Anyone notice that there was no one from the Patriots organization on Mike & Mike today.

There is a big FU to ESPN in Foxboro today. It will be interesting to see if they get any interviews.

    **************

New England players NEVER do game day interviews.

I know this and I don’t even root for them.

  57. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports, 11 out of 12 utterances from his own mouth are a lie.

I hope he gets a real, warm New England welcome tonight from the fans. Not.

  58. Osweiler looked very poised in the Chicago game. Chicago sacked him 5 times so they had a good rush at least some times. He drove the Broncos for a score in the fourth quarter when Chicago had recaptured momentum.

NE is a much better team than Chicago. At this point, Denver has a much better chance with Osweiler than Manning.

  59. Broncos deff have a better shot with Brock at the Helm and I believe they will win. Brady may own Peyton but his record nit all that good against the Broncos especially (and heres the big one) IN DENVER…They played in Denver once with Peyton at the helm and lost and blamed it on welkers rub which is funny cause they do it all the time as well. The last couple fames Pats had the luxury of having the game in NE. Again in Denver I see the Broncos coming away with the win. And Pats fans remember your 2 years away from Brady being too old and trying to defend your next man up. Now that will be fun listening to them not letting go and talking about past SB wins

  60. Not a huge baseball fan but read how Willie Mays made a fool of himself by playing way beyond his abilities. Now I can say I’ve seen it over and over again.

I worked with a guy who was convinced his dept couldn’t run without him. I convinced him with 44 years and his retirement and soc check he could have, he was working for nothing. He retired and his department did not implode.

  61. Manning is panicking knowing Brady wants to play to 40. manning might actually have someone own a passing record he doesn’t won. The problem with this guy, his dad, his brother, its all about them. It has nothing to do with team. There is no I in ME.

  62. Yes, Brock played better than Manning has all season…except….when Manning pulled a game out of his ass against the Packers. Hope everyone enjoyed that game as that is the last time you will see Manning play at that level. Living in Denver and listening to the chatter, it really does seem like they have already moved on from Manning and he won’t be here. JMO.

  63. Tough draw for the guy to get New England in his second start.

The game being in Denver is why I think the Broncos have a shot. If the D can play lights out and keep the crowd cranked up, that would help.

It would get tougher on NE if they get tripped up by Buffalo tonight.

I don’t think any of this is going to happen, however.

  64. Say what you want but in reality none of us knows what will happen in the game or with Brock. Yes it was da bearz..But pressure of your first game and on the road and the Broncos fans wanting him to play since end of last season and knowing a first ballot HOF wants back in. He played well umder the microscope. You can say he’s not Brady coming in for Bledsoe or whatever but the truth is who the hell was Brady then no one knew not the Pats or anyone. It’s happened time and again Brady, Warner, Farve, Rogers, Wilson and we all said the same thing it was 1 game. Only time will tell and we have to wait and see. Every Broncos fan was wanting Manning to leave after last year but he didn’t and now we all hope he will be good or great caise knowing you have that QB in place is a lot better then rebuilding
