Brady brushes off “Rex Ryan” audible

AP

At a time when many think Bills coach Rex Ryan is obsessed with the Patriots, maybe the Patriots are equally obsessed with Ryan.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady called out “Rex Ryan!” before a first-quarter play. After the game, Brady acted like it was no big deal.

“Yeah, we have a lot of things that are kind of in the playbook, so that’s one of them,” Brady told reporters.

Was the goal to distract Ryan or to send any type of message to him?

“No, just communication on offense,” Brady said. “We use a lot of terms. . . . We’ve used a lot of things in the past. We have a lot of unusual terms. I think we run the gamut. So we’ve got to get creative and think of different things, so that one is pretty unique.”

Coach Bill Belichick wasn’t asked about the call after the game; it’s possible he didn’t even know it was part of the audible package.

For his part, Ryan took it all in stride.

“He was calling what – my name? . . . . He likes me, I know that. I was calling him Brady, too,” Ryan said.

Given the broad range of words and phrases that teams could use — and in light of the disdain many teams have for the presence of microphones during games — it seems like only a matter of time before a quarterback exercises his creative discretion to use a nasty, inappropriate, and/or profane phrase or term at the line of scrimmage. And I kind of can’t wait.

  1. I don’t believe that Tom Brady and Rex Ryan hate each other. In fact, they probably respect each other a great deal and both have fun with this kind of thing. It’s still sports and a game. If Belichick has an issue with it (and he might), he’ll probably let Brady and McDaniels hear about it.

  2. Or companies shelling out big $$$ to a quarterback for mentioning their name in an audible.

    🙂

  3. I enjoyed it. Bonus feature: Rex slamming his headset on the ground amid a stream of curses before halftime. I wish they still used those super long extension cords so he could have gotten all tangled up in it. Often in life it’s the little things.

  4. I went back and listened. He wasn’t saying “Rex Ryan”, he was saying “I’m Lying”

  5. Rex Ryan = Run Right?
    Ryan Mallett = Run Middle?
    Peyton Manning = Pass Middle?

    🙂

There are plenty of Jets fans and more than a few Bills fans that would tell you that calling out “Rex Ryan”is in fact using a “nasty, inappropriate, and/or profane phrase or term at the line of scrimmage”

No it wasn’t Roger Goodell that called the audible.

    🙂

  8. Brady is now Rex bosom buddy. Rex name made it to the Pats playbook. It’s not an insult considering BB’s girlfriend’s name also made it to their playbook. Rex is now family. I think in a weird way Brady and Rex are fond of each other. Mutual great respect is in there.

  9. Love the comments about disrespect. Brady has also used Cougar Linda as an audible in the past( BB’s live in girlfriend

  10. The NFL now has a new revenue wrinkle!

From here forward, all audibles will be the names of paid sponsors, e.g. “Budweiserrrr, hut, hut”; “Pepsiiiii, hut”; “Cialisss, let’s go!”

I’m surprised ol’ Rog didn’t think of this. Commercials during live action!

  11. “…profane phrase or term at the line of scrimmage. And I kind of can’t wait.”

Why? So you can try to run their name through the mud via non stop incessant articles questioning their judgement? I’d bet a pay check that you’d be the one crowing the loudest about how horrible it is.

  12. Brady has such a high pitched girly voice their rex probably thought it was a woman in the stands yelling his name

  13. If some QB does get nasty in an audible call, it won’t be Brady cussing Rex.. He has always respected Rex Ryan’s ability to present a challenging defense. Ryan’s Jets teams didn’t have that much success against the Patriots and to this point his Bills teams haven’t either. But they always fight hard and don’t quit. The audible was just harmless fun. A smile is the best reaction, except for the media.

  14. Belichick called the controversial formation plays used in the playoffs last year “Baltimore” and “Raven”. So something tells me he doesn’t mind the “Rex Ryan” call.

  15. No controversy, just funny. I also liked last week’s “Gronk! Grape! Grape!” To me, this is just one of the fun things that we get now that we can really hear the calls at the line.

I don’t get it. The Patriots, Brady, and Bilichick obviously want the attention. So why brush it off?

I’m sure the Pats and all teams would prefer their audibles werent picked up by the mic

you hear them all the time on TV yet it’s some huge scandal when a former Patriot says “Somehow we’d get a list of the teams audibles before the game” and certain people eat it up

That was great! I loved when he put both hands against his temples before and had a little tremor fit. I pictured him saying “Curses! Foiled again!” (with the requisite cursing that was obviously there thrown in)

  18. Reminds me of how Rodgers was drinking a post-game Grape-Crush after beating the Vikes and said that he just liked grape soda. Pretty funny burns.

  19. Guck Foodell!!! Wonder what fine they’ll get if they audible that. Kraft with a wide smile, probably would open his wallet.

    every single day………

You are the sum of all your cheats.

    No matter what.

  21. It’s a freaking joke, people! Get a sense of humor!

Last year, Brady audibled at the line “Linda Cougar” in a not so veiled poke at Bill Bellichick’s girlfriend. Just some good natured fun – laugh it off!

  22. Everyone else just calls out CHEATERS whenever Shady and the Deflatriots come to town.

    ****…believe it.

  23. Rex is obsessed with the Patriots like Ahab was obsessed with the White Whale; same result, too.

    10-0 says what?

  26. Ding! The ideas just hit. Cam Newtons new fav will be “Under Armor”. Aaron Rodgers will be” Adidas”.
    Johnny Manzel’s will be “Jaegermeister”.

  27. Brady also audibled “Bruschi”, so there was no disrespect meant for Rex, whom Brady and Belichick respect tremendously.

Every time the Pats face Rex I worry, and last night was no exception. That Bills team is up and coming for sure.

It must suck that the cry babies’ teams are so bad they have to come on a Patriots thread to post their pitiful, little, jealous comments.

  28. This call awesome. The Bruschi call too. DVRs country wide went into rewind mode to hear it again. We are lucky to be able to watch this team every week.

Brady canf even tell the truth about a play he was calling born to lie an cheat this guy

    —–

who do you trust more? The guy who voluntarily offered testimony under oath, or the guy caught blatantly lying to a judge in court?

Ir are you just too hateful to see the reality?

  31. This is why so many people think Brady is a good QB but a little girl as a person. He can’t even tell the truth and then laugh about it, like a normal person. Meanwhile, many Pats fans still are think “deflator” referred to weight loss.

  32. I still wanna know what happened to fumble stats guy, anyone heard from him, or is he hanging out with Tom can’t throw a fully inflated ball guy in his mom’s basement?

Your RB was fumbling so much it was national stories over why he didn’t land in BB doghouse.

  34. “it seems like only a matter of time before a quarterback exercises his creative discretion to use a nasty, inappropriate, and/or profane phrase or term at the line of scrimmage. And I kind of can’t wait.”

One can only imagine the amount of the fine that will be levied on the quarterback that tries the NFL on that one.

  35. We’ve been waiting for the cold weather. Let’s see how Tommy Boy throws a legit 12 psi NFL football as the temps drop. Deflate-Gate ain’t over quite yet.

  36. Brady plays great in cold weather games–or did you just start watching football this year?

Detractors want so badly for there to be a “reason” that Brady and the Patriots are perennial winners–all the hater half-baked schemes and taunts are ridiculous of course–but there actually is one that’s accurate…

    …they’re really good.

    What does this even mean?

Brady doesn’t give the media anything because there is nothing to be gained by it.

Unlike your coach who revels in the attention and enjoys making it all about him.
