St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was shot Tuesday night in Miami and remains in the hospital following the incident.

The team released a statement just after midnight EST.

“We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening,” the team said in a statement. “We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more.”

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Bailey was shot twice in the head while sitting in a car with several family members. The driver of the car was shot many times while shielding the children in the vehicle from the gunfire. His wounds are apparently life-threatening.

Bailey will have surgery tomorrow to tend to his injuries.

Bailey is currently in the middle of a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. He has 12 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown this season for St. Louis.

  1. Same thing as what happen with Chris Johnson. Sad to say but as a black community WE can’t go back home to the place you spend you whole life working hard to make it out. It’s too many people who never make it out and hate that you do. With that said prayers to him and mostly his cousin who reportedly got the bad end of it all shielding bullets from 2 younger siblings. Hope they all make it through.

Notice the emphasis I put on “WE” because I’m a young black male, so don’t say I’m race baiting I’m speaking on a reality and I see this kind of stuff everyday it’s the crab effect they wanna pull you back in instead of being happy for you.

  2. Why does this seem like 1) he knows who did it, 2) not surprising. Not saying he or everyone else in car deserved for this to happen, but certain things happen and while shocking it’s not shocking. Hope he gets better and doesn’t subscibe to “No Snitching”

  3. That’s just awful to hear. Condolences to Mr. Bailey, his family, friends, the St. Louis Rams, and their fan base. Hoping the driver is able to pull through.

  4. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope that the comments here are positive. We are so used to people putting themselves in bad situations that it’s easy to look at his past and see drug related suspension and be quick to react. So far it doesn’t appear he did anything wrong that would have incited any violence against him. In fact he may have even saved lives by shielding the children in the car.

  5. Not what I was hoping to see when I logged in today. I’m a Rams fan, so I especially hate this, but I think everyone can agree that this is an awful thing to happen to anyone. Ball player or not, this is awful to happen to any human

  6. Met him a few times at camp, seems like a old guy. It’s a shame what happened to him. Hopefully he makes a full recovery, this never would of happened if he wasn’t suspended for smoking WEED . Something much safer, healthier than alcohol. Wich many players are probably having a drink right now, it’s not right the NFL and this country need to wake up. But that’s something else. Right now let’s pray for Stedman . He’s a good guy who never deserved this .

  7. Ironic since he was one of those Rams doing the Hands up Don’t shoot dance a while back. Get well young man

  8. Waiting for the first broadcast idiot to jeopardize his career today by finding a correlation between his suspension and the “lifestyle” that leads to a shooting.

  9. thoughts and prayers to himself and,
and family. especially the person attempting
to shield the others in the car. I hope this story
    has a miraculous ending.

Wait, the dude was shot in the head, twice, and the Rams have spoken with him? Is that just a poor choice of words? Did they mean they spoke with his agent, or did they literally speak with him?

It is remarkable how many people are able to survive these kinds of incidents. Like 50 Cent getting shot 9 times. And didn’t Tupac get shot 6 times and survive? that dude who used to play with the Jags got shot multiple times a few years ago. But yet, on the other side of the coin, some people get shot 1 time, and it is fatal. Crazy.

  11. He was shot twice in the head and they TALKED to him?!? I’ll admit, I wish I had heard that conversation. Wild.

  12. “The driver of the car was shot many times while shielding the children in the vehicle from the gunfire.”

What kind of animal shoots into a car with children inside? That alone warrants the death penalty IMO.

awful… seriously why are guns still allowed in this country.

Why don’t we just make murder illegal? Oh wait…

  14. Is coopsxx suggesting if guns weren’t “allowed” that this criminal would not have been able to get a gun? Making guns illegal will only prevent actual law abiding citizens from having guns. Criminals are criminals because they break the law. They will still have access to guns just like criminals still have access to illegal drugs. This is a terrible tragic story but let’s not pretend if guns were illegal it would not have happened. Sometimes people don’t think.

Whats so important to be on the streets at this hour?

Really… That’s the question you have to ask?

Maybe coming home from a movie? Wanted some doughnuts? Thought the evening smelled nice? Wanted to go for a drive with the kids and had the radical idea that they might be able to do so without getting SHOT?

    Other questions you must ask:

“Well then why did she walk past that guy?”

“Why did they build that hospital so close to where a war would break out?”

“If that hedge didn’t want to get trimmed, why did it grow so close to the sidewalk?”

Tell that to the people in Paris…

Wisconsin has 600,000 registered gun owners, but you rarely hear about these things happening with registered gun owners…

It’s all about responsibility and personal/mutual respect.

Like drugs or prostitutes or anything else illegal, if someone wants it, they’ll find it somewhere. Would you prefer that only the bad guys have guns?

Would you like to become like china? they have no guns, so you see mass stabbings all the time. even if you got rid of all the guns, criminals would still have them. Im sure the guy who shot Stedman and family is probably not allowed to own gun and got his from the black market. so your logic doesn’t make sense

  21. @ mrheavyhustle

This is not just a black issue.
I am white and work a stone’s throw away from where the Baltimore riots took place recently. Even though the majority of the people involved in the riots were black doesn’t mean that other ethnic groups weren’t affected IE. there businesses being looted, cars burned, fear of safety.
You’re saying to NOT go back to your community because you are now successful!!!! Really?
How does one show his former neighbors that there is a way out?
I’ve seen way too many times where young city children are not separated from the lifestyle of adults. There is no filter . These kids are exposed to so many things they shouldn’t be at such an early age they get ruined (drugs, sex, violence, even music with vulgar language and content). It’s awful what is happening in these “Communities” and it isn’t all black.

  23. I wonder where the concussion spotter was on this one. First they miss the Keenum concussion, now they miss Steadman taking two shots to the cranium. I’m sure Roger will launch an investigation

someone said it earlier, human lives are at an all-time low value — no respect for life, very little self respect

As a parent of a daughter who had night terrors for over 2 years, it’s highly possible they were driving around town to get the little ones to sleep (I don’t know that for a fact…. I’m just guessing).

Countless times, car rides were the only solution for my daughter.

I’m sure the citizens of Australia really appreciate you offering their country up as a penal colony.

  27. Jesus H. Christ there are some evil people out there. Dark tidings… You’re in my prayers Bailey and Co. It’s been a while since I’ve said one but man…here’s one for you.
