Tracy Porter makes a key cameo on Brett Favre night

It was fitting that, on the night the Packers retired the number of quarterback Brett Favre, a player responsible for one of Favre’s most notorious interceptions not only played in the game — but also made an interception of Favre’s successor.

Tracy Porter, who nearly six years ago kept Favre from returning to the Super Bowl as a member of the Vikings after Favre forced an ugly cross-body throw into coverage while in field-goal range, picked off Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers late in the fourth quarter, killing Green Bay’s next-to-last drive of the game in a 17-13 loss.

“You’re coming in feeling like a homecoming game with them doing the extra things with Brett Favre and whatnot, but our mindset was to come in and win,” Porter said after the game via the Chicago Tribune. “That’s what we did.”

That is what they did, raining on the Favre parade the same way the way Porter’s Saints did in 2009, after Favre, who had been battered all game by a allegedly bounty-crazed defense, had driven the Vikings down the field for what at the time seemed to be an inevitable game-winning goal.

For the play and its memorable “This is not Detroit!” aftermath, we yield the floor to the great Paul Allen, voice of the Vikings.

  1. A washed up cb picking off what Packers fans said the best qb in nfl history? Wow, he is declining. Even Teddy put up huge numbers against that dude in Chicago. Packers can kiss 2015 goodbye with the way they’re playing, bc they’re not going any where. Oh wait, maybe one and done is a super bowl trophy for them. Lol

  2. If Eddie Royal was the Bears worst FA signing this offseason then Porter was hands down the best and yes that includes McPhee. Dude is a straight stud.

  3. Porter came out of nowhere for the Bears, just a low profile signing in June, when the castoffs nobody wants get 1-year prove it deals. This is the Rotoworld capsule (via Adam Schefter):

“The 29-year-old hasn’t received a positive grade from Pro Football Focus since 2010 and is unlikely to help the Bears’ secondary.”

Fox had him in Denver and initially viewed him as 2 nickel (Tim Jennings being 1 nickel) or corner 3-4. He was injured early in the season, didn’t play in the first few games. Since then, I think it’s possible he’s been their most consistent defensive performer this year and has possibly helped save Kyle Fuller’s career. Huge signing by Ryan Pace.

What game were you watching…Teddy put-up what??? Teddy is bad and his arm is worse. And every person with a football brain will tell you that the Bears game that game away.

Throwing against Sherrick McMannis could make Tebow look like Manning.

  5. I bet Saints fans would be happy to have him today over the walking personal foul known as Brandon Browner. You could make a case that he, not Drew Brees was the real hero in the Saints’ super bowl win.

  6. Great job by the Super Bowl champ! Too bad he didn’t pick off Osweiler with Peyton watching it on TV.

That video of the Minnesota guy reacting to the Favre interception is priceless.

Not nearly nearly as funny as the shot of Packers fans sitting there in stunned silence after the collapse in the NFCCG in Seattle. Looking up at the scoreboard like it had been malfunctioning the last 4 minutes.

  8. That was the best Viking season of my lifetime!! What a great season by the MVP Favre. We went toe to toe with the SB champs and came up short. Just having the chance was amazing. Thanks Brett!

  9. “Even Teddy put up huge numbers against that dude in Chicago. ”

187 yards 1 TD and 1 INT for the game. That must be Minnesota huge. That bar is set pretty low.

  10. One of the greatest game changing interceptions in history considering what was on the line and the players involved.

At least when the Packers lost, their fans didn’t go crying to the league demanding they change their rules. And yes, the NFL changed their overtime format as a result of Viking ‘fans’ crying and pouting about how it was unfair that they lost to the Saints in overtime

  12. And not only that, but it was also Da Bears that sacked and knocked out BrINT Fail making his last pass ever as a pro QB incomplete and showing that the iron man had indeed rusted.

  13. What’s even worse is that Favre liked MN better. He probably had to hide a smile when that happened last night. We hate Favre in Wisconsin.

  14. I’ve seen comments in other pieces about last night’s GB loss to Da Bears that claim that Fail would have won it with an end zone pass.
    You kidding me?
    Oh wait.
It’s just bitter, hateful trolls who really hate A-Rod and are gleefully loving watching the Pack lose.
They will come up with anything no matter how wrong it is.

  15. while watching their fanbase turn on their hero was awesome, that tracy porter Int was a long time ago. Viking fans don’t live in the past like the cheesers do, so good job Porter and Chicago!

He should’ve had 2 Ints but the refs stole the earlier one from him, that was blatant green bay refs helping out the packers.

  16. That supposedly “horrible” INT Favre threw in that game was on a 3rd and 15 at the Saints’ 38-yd line – which meant the Vikings were in position for a 55-yd field goal. Hardly a chip shot or guaranteed thing, even in a dome.

Favre tried to make a play, but Porter made a better one. It happens. Peterson’s fumbles were what really cost Minnesota the most that day.

  17. “……after Favre, who had been battered all game by a allegedly bounty-crazed defense…”

Why is the word “allegedly” in this story? People were found guilty of the bounty scandal and we’re fined and/or suspended. It happened. Get rid of “allegedly”

  18. Porters INT was a gift, should have had a bow on it.
Adams didn’t complete his route on a quick timing slant play. The ball is thrown to a spot. Adams wasn’t there, Porter was there.
