Panthers, last undefeated team, haven’t lost in a year

AP

Last night, the Panthers became the only undefeated team in the NFL when the Patriots lost to the Broncos.

Today, they get to celebrate their anniversary.

As pointed out by Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, it was one year ago today, Nov.30, 2014, when the Panthers last lost a regular season game.

That was an ugly 31-13 defeat at Minnesota, a result which dropped them to 3-8-1.

While that might have ended many seasons, the Panthers kept going, winning their last four games to finish 7-8-1 and go to the playoffs as NFC South division champions.

Coupled with this year’s 11-0 start, that’s 15 straight regular season wins.

That leaves them five games clear of Atlanta for the NFC South title with five to play, and two games up on Arizona in the chase for home field advantage in the playoffs.

Their remaining schedule is favorable, too, with this week’s trip to 4-7 New Orleans followed by a home game against the 6-5 Falcons, trips to the 5-6 Giants and Falcons before their finale against the 5-6 Buccaneers.

So while the possibility of going 16-0 is tantalizing, the Panthers and their fans should also stop to enjoy the fact that any disappointment being felt in Boston today (or half the NFL) is something they haven’t had to endure in a year.

  1. Say what you want about the panthers but the fact of the matter is that they are the most complete team playing in the NFL right now. They’re also the healthiest as well.

  2. @Saints, Falcons, @Giants, @Falcons & Bucs to close (who they opened with in week 1). The Falcons are melting aren’t they? Wow. On a 4 game skid and 5 of the last 6 have been Ls. Yikes. The G-men played like boys yesterday. (No, not the cow-boys but, come to think of it…) Drew Brees went his first game without throwing at least 1 TD ever as a Saint and the Defense is too bad to correct and too lame to try. Hhmmnn…

Short of this Panthers team getting sloppy or careless, it’s difficault to see a threat to them for an entire 60 minutes over the next 5 weeks. Brees & Co. can sling up points but not all that many against the Carolina Defense. The Buccaneers could be a considerable threat to win in week 17 and, should the Panthers find themselves in post-season mode and decide to ‘sit’ some starters, that might be the week Carolina could lose 1 this season.

  3. Darin is the only sports writer I can count on to write positive stories about the Panthers. Granted, he used to cover them exclusively and still lives in the area. But, I’ll take it! However, the rest of the national sports media will say that the Panthers haven’t been tested, aren’t good enough, need a signature win, and so on…

  4. Any given Sunday. The Panthers are not, will not and should not be concerned with going 16-0. The goal is to maintain the top seed, so that is a reachable goal.

All together now … the Panthers haven’t played anybody yet. They just have beat anyone who found themselves on the schedule.

    KEEP POUNDING!!!

  5. Schedule babies. The NFC South is only a tad bit better than the AFC South. The Panthers may as well be Colts East.

  6. What happened last year, which led to one of the ugliest playoff games ever, is irrelevant to this year. Teams have far too much personnel turnover for something like this to matter. The Panthers would’ve lost that game against the Cowboys had Romo not thrown it away. MVP Cam only had 1 TD and was doing nothing against a God awful Cowboys pass defense. Cam doesn’t deserve to be in any MVP discussion and instead, the entire Panthers defense should win that award considering they’re the undefeated ones.

  7. Get back to me when they win the Super Bowl, because until then these specific Win/loss periods me nothing until you win the championship.

  8. Who saw this coming?

Carolina Panthers…best team in the NFL.

    Talk about Any Given Sunday.

    Smh.

  9. Panthers, last undefeated team, haven’t lost in a year

The Panthers, along with the rest of the NFCS division, play one of the easiest schedules. It just that the rest of the division isn’t quite good enough to take advantage. The Panthers won’t be as battle tested as they should be… Definitely a candidate for an early exit against good defenses in the playoffs.

  10. Their remaining schedule may seem easy on paper, but never overlook the divisional games. Those are the games that are always the most difficult because of the teams familiarity with one another.

  11. There’s no one left on their slate that is good enough to compete with them. If they lose in the regular season, it will be because they beat themselves with mistakes.

  12. This makes up for 2001-02. We won in Minnesota in the first game in 2001, then there were the terrorist attacks, then we lost 15 straight. So when the 2002 season started, it had been about 1 calendar year since we had won a game, and we beat Baltimore to start 2002.

And with a mightily struggling New Orleans team up next, I expect our streak to continue. Keep Pounding!

  13. Enjoy it Panthers fans. You deserve it. Was hoping that the Patriots and Panthers would meet in the SuperBowl as undefeated teams, but that wasn’t meant to be. It will still be a fun game to watch whatever their regular season results end up as.

  14. Well we did endure it in the playoffs with the loss to Seattle, but otherwise I do feel fortunate not to have lost a game yet. It’s really a special feeling when you aren’t sure when or if your team will ever lose.

  15. Yeah, they haven’t lost in a year! If you don’t count the biggest game of their season last year (playoffs).

I see similarities with the Warriors of the NBA – both have really good records, but are helped by soft schedules and catching the good teams at just the right time.

  16. This is really reaching for bragging rights since they lost a playoff game and they don’t play football in the spring and summer.

  17. Have any of you guys even WATCHED the Panthers play? Their defense is scary, they have a solid running game, and Cam Newton is an outstanding athlete.

They can’t help who is on their schedule, they just go ahead and beat everyone they play. It isn’t like anyone took wins away from the Patriots for playing against Washington, Indy, New York, Miami and Buffalo.

  18. People just need to drop the strength of schedule argument. The Bengals lost to the Texans (who now have a winning record) while Panthers beat them. The Cards lost to a Landry-led Steelers and the Rams (and if not for the refs, would have lost to the 49ers). Point is, this isn’t college. You can be beaten by any team any Sunday, and the fact that no team has beaten the Panthers in their last 15 regular season games is damn impressive.

Also, the Panthers have now beaten 4 teams with a winning record now. Crazy how that works huh?

Since when is a game ever easy?
I think the Packers losing to the Lions shows how tough it is to win a football game.

  20. And to bounce off what ThisGuy stated, folks still tell me “who have the panthers played” or “they havent played anybody”!!! Im like who is anybody concerning the other teams?? I mean you have a lot of good/decent teams with 5-5 records with chances of getting into the playoffs! Call it parity spreaded even this year among teams or whatever, but that cliche of the Panthers havent played anyone needs to die. Texans, Colts, Green Bay, Seattle, Eagles, Dallas at home. All beaten but before the season started, most had the Panthers picked to lose all those games!!! Tremendous!

  21. I really like the one guy who said the Panthers are undefeated because of their NFC South schedule…what he fails to realize is that they have only played 2 of their 6 divisional games. Nice try though…

  22. Last year when the Panthers won the NFC South with a sub-500 record, sportswriters everywhere were screaming for the NFL to change the rules so that only teams above 500 get playoff slots. Now, when there’s a chance a team might win the NFC East with a 500 record or worse, nary a whisper is heard in medialand about that vital need for an NFL rules change. Suppose it has something to do with the fact that playoff TV ratings might dip if no NFC East team were in the tournament? Naw, TV ratings would never affect media commentary, would they?

  23. Everyone hollering that the Panthers haven’t played anyone are the same people that said Seattle, Philly, Indy, Green Bay and Dallas (with their undefeated starting QB) would beat them. As soon as the Panthers beat a team, suddenly that team stinks and the win doesn’t count.

The Panthers, like every other team in the NFL, plays a pre-determined schedule based on rotations and 2 games against foes that placed in the same slot in their divisions. Is it the Panthers fault that the AFCS and NFCE have been bad this year?

And in case you haven’t noticed – and judging by all the ‘Panthers haven’t played any winning teams’ talk, you haven’t – there aren’t that many good teams. About 1/3 of the teams in the league have winning records. So nobody has played many games against winning teams.

  24. For those that say the Panthers haven’t beaten anyone, who in the NFC would be a formidable opponent? The only teams I can think of are the Vikings and the Cardinals, and I think Carolina would beat both of them. The Vikings are a year away and the Steelers beat the Cardinals with Mike Vick and Landry Jones!

  25. They are a good team, definitely one of the best teams in the league.
They kind of remind me of those Falcons teams of a couple/few years ago that posted great regular season records, but you just never thought they had it all to go all the way. Then the best teams were Seattle and SF but they played much harder schedules than the Falcons.

But now the NFC as a whole is down, the elites have fallen and now the Panthers and Cardinals have stepped up to take their place. Barring any significant injuries I think the Cardinals will go for the NFC.

  26. Pretty crazy turn around for a team from one season to another for sure. This is the epitome of a ‘team’ and an example of players that are gelling and maturing together as a unit.

Like him or not, Cam is the MVP so far.

  27. I would love to say Saints will be ready for REVENGE from losing to them earlier and last year at home but I DO NOT know which Saints team will show up.

Yes we despise them but we are not a good team right now so I can only hope we WIN like we beat ATL earlier in year when they were undefeated.

**SAINTS fan hoping for a miracle smh…

  29. The Panthers are the best team in the NFL, their record already shows that. Certain fans only give credit when a team is slinging the ball for 400 yards a game. But having a great run game and elite defense along with one of the leagues best play makers at QB can be a Super Bowl formula.

3 other teams in NFC side that will compete will be Cards, Seahawks, Vikings.

  30. Riverboat Ron banked on Jared Allen, and now he gon’ “corner” up JOSH (Norman) with Cortland Finnegan (newly signed on). These Cam-rolina Panthers gon’ be somethin’ now. Oooh chile… I’m gon’ tell mama!

I am no Carolina fan but schedule comments are ridiculous and this one is over the top. They have played TWO games against their division opponents so far. The schedule is what it is, the vaunted ’72 Dolphins played against an opponents winning % of .369 without facing a regular season opponent that had more than 8 wins. They too could only play whoever was on their schedule.

Congrats to the Panthers for getting to 11-0
    A Giants guy

  32. Really getting tired of hearing this strength is schedule nonsense. What NFC team is still standing in their way? The Vikings? The Cardinals? Neither is bad but forgive me if i don’t feel the need to change my pants just yet.

  33. Even as these posts are still pumping out it still amazes me how much ignorant/disrespectful folks still have against the Panthers. They are a good team deal with it. Hell I have.

  34. The quality of play in the NFC is atrocious this year. When the Saints won it in ’09, the Vikings and Cards were incredible with Brett Favre and Kurt Warner in our way of a championship. The Panthers will not have to deal with anything close to that quality of play from the NFC this year… That’s why anything other than winning a title will be a disaster of a year for Panthers and the poor quality of play in the NFC puts more pressure on the Panthers as everyone expects them to win…… Trust

Fun fact, The Saints opponents regular season win % was .426. Panthers opponents are at .430. The ’09 Vikes were a .750 team and the Cards were at .625, they both allowed @ 20 PPG. This years Cards are at .818, the Vikes are at .727 this year. In ’09 outside of the division winners there were 3 NFC teams with winning records, currently outside of the division leaders the NFC has 3 teams with winning records.

The incomparable run of the ’09 Saints of your memory bears little resemblance with the one everyone else watched but it is remarkably similar to what the Panthers are facing

  36. remarkably similar to what the Panthers are facing

Lol, yeah the Panthers are facing 3 HOFers like the Saints did in beating Warner, Favre and Peyton Manning…. Not….the Panthers are facing Carson Palmer lol

  38. Carolina Panthers is one of the best team in the NFL right now among New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and few. Their offense can run against anybody and history has shown that 90% of the Super Bowl Champions has had the best rushing team. From time to time, Newton can sling the ball down deep and our “slight better than marginal” receivers continues to catch the ball. Not our 1st rounder Kelvin Benjamin or the departed Steven Smith. How many of our receivers are well-known of first round pick or a serious threat? NONE! Can you say that for the New England Patriots? Or for the Denver Broncos? No. With that added to our threat, Tight End Greg Olsen we are blessed to have a good passing attack. Our defense are very solid although from time to time they may seems a bit plush but what matter is that they held opponent’s offense from scoring when it matter the most! (Remember our OT against Colts?)

Cam Newton may not had best day against the Dallas Cowboys but the team showed that we are very capable of working together as a team and each category scored points to get 33 points on the board. How many team can do that? Most team, if their offense have bad day then they have no chance of winning but we showed we could do that.

It would be nice to see us go perfect 16-0 but honestly, I am not expecting it from my Carolina Panthers. Actually, losing a game or two may be a good thing for us so we can find our mistake and learn from it then use that as motivation to go far in the play-off. If they go perfect, great! I am sure they have not forgot how New England Patriots went perfect in regular season and still went home without a Super Bowl ring. That will serve as a good reminder to the Panthers.

We may have been one and done in the play-off in last few years, and I want most of you who think we are that type of team to continue say that to us so you can motivate us to prove you wrong. Proceed and ignite our motivation. Thank you! 🙂

    Go Panthers!!
