Mike Wallace not happy with penalties, wants catches and yards

AP

Receiver Mike Wallace continues to underperform during his first year with the Vikings. He’s not yet complaining about that.

But he is complaining about a recent rash of penalties called on the players covering him. Last Sunday in Atlanta, he drew a pair of interference penalties for 39 yards and a defensive holding foul, for five yards and a first down.

“That’s not the same as a catch,” Wallace said. “When you have zero catches, you need those yards.”

Wallace has had zero catches in three of the last five games. For his entire career prior to that, he had two.

“We’re winning football games, so at the end of the day that’s all that matters,” Wallace said. “I want to catch the ball, but it’s cool.”

It wouldn’t be cool if they weren’t winning. And if they stop winning, look for Wallace to complain about more than drawing penalties.

  1. It’s a two-way street. Yes, Wallace needs to be a bigger part of the game plan. However, he also needs to not drop easy balls when they do come his way.

I know it’s Norv Turner’s offense, but it’s Zimmer’s overall philosophy and any time they get a lead they start feeding Adrian and playing good defense.

It’s worked pretty well so far, but may not lead to a lot of offensive stats outside of #28.

Interference penalties are the same as a catch and sometimes they are better when the catch wouldn’t get a first down. Wallace is never happy. He is all about his own personal stats. He is just not as good as he thinks he is. Miami has half the deep attempts and twice the completions as when Wallace was there. He is not easy to throw to because his speed varies greatly. He kicks into high gear only when he is right on the defender. You can’t run timing routes that way without the QB looking inaccurate. The only reason he isn’t a cancer right now is because they are winning. If they start to lose he will be vocal wanting the ball more and blaming the losses on his lack of involvement. Glad Miami flushed this turd.

  3. Wallace is by definition a diva receiva…. Dude is all about himself. He had 10 TDs his last season in Miami and yet that wasn’t enough, so he had a hissy fit that led to him being benched for the final half of the season finale. Pitt fans warned everyone that all he can do is run the go and that he never high points the football. It’s only a matter of time until he gets on Bridgewater for not forcing him more passes. Dude shoulda just stayed in Pitt, Ben was an excellent complement to his skillset.

  4. While I was definitely against the Vikings signing Wallace, he’s starting to grow on me. Its got to be incredibly frustrating for me because he is a talented WR, there just aren’t enough snaps to go around with AD running the show. Deep routes don’t even have a chance to develop with this offensive line and 8-9 in the box.

  5. would hope that when Teddy throws him the ball he catches it. I have seen too many drops. Also, he needs to catch up to Teddy’s passes. Randy Moss hardly if ever was over thrown too by quarterbacks with bigger arm strength.

  6. Teddy Bustwater can’t throw the long ball. Wallace- he seems to have lost a step but can’t tell because Bustwaters longest throw is 20 yards .

  7. C’mon man, the dude has dropped more balls than he’s caught in the past few weeks. He’s lucky he’s still starting. Personally, I’d like to see Johnson opposite Diggs.

  8. would hope that when Teddy throws him the ball he catches it. I have seen too many drops. Also, he needs to catch up to Teddy’s passes. Randy Moss hardly if ever was over thrown too by quarterbacks with bigger arm strength

What in the HE☆☆ are you talking about? Culpepper had a gun for an arm and Cunningham threw a Ton of bombs to Moss

You need to watch some older game tape.

I like teddy but fact is he has a noodle arm. If we had a qb with decent arm strenth wallace would be a weapon. Fact is it was stupid to obtain him with Teddy as the qb. Waste of money for a qb who cant throw over 15 yards.

  9. They’re a run first team that’s actually emphasizing the run first through the ENTIRE game. And not just the first half, looking at you Musgrave. Receivers aren’t high priority in a run first. Yeah you need them for the PA but I’m keeping this short.

  10. And yet little jordi Nelson is in front of the camera saying “I make this team go”!

What in the world are you talking about and why can’t you make a post without mentioning the pack? Lame.

I know a way Teddy could earn a few extra bucks before he washes out of the NFL. Since Manning, Rodgers and Wilson have cornered the insurance commercial market, and as you say Bridgewater is a noodle arm, how about he endorses Hamburger Helper? He the perfect spokesperson! Just think how cute he’d look dressed up in that little white glove body suit? Think about it, white gloves, little hands, noodle arm? How appropriate. And there’s quite a resemblance between himself and the lil’ HH dude.

  12. What is this story supposed to be about other than bashing Wallace?

“… He’s not yet complaining about that”

““We’re winning football games, so at the end of the day that’s all that matters,” Wallace said. “I want to catch the ball, but it’s cool.”

” if they stop winning, look for Wallace to complain about more than drawing penalties.”

So, you’re saying he’s a diva and might complain one of these days… wow – that’s some deep football news there.

  13. Mike Wallace is a one trick pony. The dude is fast but can’t run routes and he will not dive for a ball, will not go across the middle and let’s face it, Mike Wallace really can’t catch all that well, give the drops he has had. But now he is good at whining.

  14. He would not dare to complain under Zimmer or he’ll be out the door quick. That was a statement saying he doesn’t whine but wants to catch more and help this Vikings team win.

  15. The current formula is winning games. Stay true to the formula, Mike. Start bitching about personal stats and Zimmer will cut you like a peice of fat from a tasty steak.

  16. Wow, didn’t take Wallace long to get used to the “Viking way” of making excuses for poor performance and choking in the clutch. He doesn’t care the team is 8-3, he only cares about his stats. What is the opposite of SKOL Vikings?

  17. By reading PFT it’s become quite clear to me now. The Green Bay Packers don’t reside in Green Bay,Wisconsin anymore. Nope. They. Live 24/7 365 days a year in Viking fans heads…rent free. How do I know this? Read PFT. These poor women cannot resist the urge to mention the Packers every time they post. Sad. Are there not nice young men to take you to dinner and dancing? No Jobs? I thought Minnesota was such a great place to live? Geez . How about kicking the Packers out and getting some lives ?

  18. Cmon, can’t there be any articles without you guys arguing like little kids? Mike Wallace doesn’t fit the offense very well, but he is good at stretching the field and keeping the defense honest. Come to think of it, my packers could use someone like that since no one can seem to beat man coverage off the line. He would fit in well, minus the heft contract.

I understand the rivalry and I love seeing the vikings lose as much as the next packer fan, but the constant “lacy is fat/bustwater has tiny hands” lines are getting old. There actually used to be real talk about football on this site, now it’s just a tmz comment section with people that care more about degrading the other team rather than the sport itself.

  19. I really don’t know about teddy’s arm strength. The line doesn’t give him much time for long routes to develop and as many of you pointed out, most plays are running plays. Personally I would love to see the long ball but he can check down all day if it means first downs. But as far as arm strength, some who went to a practice can answer that. Most of us can’t.

  20. The comparison to the Moss led Vikings isn’t fair. Back then, the team had a great o line, with all 5 starters playing all the time. Since Zimmer, and Bridgewater for that matter, got here, you can count on one hand how many games our best 5 o lineman played together–huge difference. Also, back then, the OC threw to open up the run, polar opposite of how it’s done currently. As for Wallace, he has dropped too many balls, but the combination of poor play calling by Norv and Teddy struggling to complete even the most basic passes that college qb’s can, is the biggest reason he’s having an off season. There are more games than not, where Wright, Diggs, Johnson and Patterson seem invisible. With the vast talent this team has to throw to, it should have a pass game that equals the run game in productivity, and don’t even go there with the o line excuse, Ponder did just as well with worse, and he didn’t have 4-5 above average wr’s running routes for him, he had maybe 1 if he was lucky. Teddy has plenty of time to see the field, he had zero pressure when he underthrew Rudolph last week for the endzone pick, had he thrown the ball anywhere in Kyle’s zipcode it is six, that’s been a trend this year and if it continues this great team will be an afterthought before too long.

  21. ‘Little’ jordy nelson?? That 6’3″ roadrunner who constantly torches your purple defense? The guy you’d love to have instead of mike wallace? Don’t worry he’ll be back soon enough to Do You again

  22. I’m tired of Wallace. With our system, I really think Thielen and Patterson and Diggs would be a better choice. I know, I know, the Patterson hate and he can’t run a route and all of that. Fact is none of us truly know what got Patterson in the doghouse, and I do know that he’s a better run blocker than Wallace. It’s gotten me to wonder if we let Patterson play, he can’t do worse than 0 catches in 3 out of the past 4 games. Wallace never fights for the ball. If people are that against Patterson, throw Thielen out there. At least he’s a good run blocker and will be where he needs to be for Teddy. I’ve seen enough of Charles Johnson and Wallace not getting open.

  23. Some Viking fans wishing the Packers do poorly instead of the Vikings doing well, and others with no confidence going forward. Write what you know I guess.

  24. Wallace will soon be out of the NFL but not before he draws a couple more season’s worth of $11 million paychecks.

More to the point, this is the GM’s fault. He knew he had a Qb that doesn’t have a big arm so he would have done better to sign possession type receivers who run crisp routes to get open within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage. So what does Speilman do? He cuts Craig Jennings and gets Wallace and keeps Flush Patterson, one of the bigger first round busts on any NFL roster. Then to bail himself out, he gives a raise to a convicted child abuser who just happens to be a good RB proving that he could care less about the character of the players he signs as long as he gets to keep his job a couple more years.

  25. Wallace TALKS the best game in the League.
He isn’t getting enough separation, or sell his routs.
He thinks he can just use his speed like he did when he was a Rookie. Guess what the corners are faster now, and you are slower, you cant burn past players, they know your moves. Minnesota also has a QB that cant pull the trigger fast enough for those small windows, and FORGET a ball in the air for 40 yards!

  26. I got a different take from this article. I read Wallace as saying; “winning is the most important thing, but I need to help this team more by catching passes”.

Vikings are in first place. Wallace isn’t sulking around, like some of you want to believe.

Honest question for the board. Report it if it frightens you. Have the vikings beaten a team with a winning record this year? There fans carry on like they are an elite team. Do you know how foolish and homeristic this makes you look? Comeon fanboys, smarten up!

Actually Vikings fans want the Vikings to excel and the packers to do poorly.
