Patriots rule Edelman and Gronkowski out, Amendola questionable

The Patriots will be without their top two receivers on Sunday. And maybe their third as well.

New England has listed wide receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Rob Gronkowski out for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Wide receiver Danny Amendola is questionable.

Edelman is first on the team with 61 catches and second with 692 yards and seven touchdowns. Gronkowski is second on the team with 57 catches and first with 931 yards and nine touchdowns. Amendola is third in catches (49) and yards (520). Tom Brady will be playing with a very depleted receiving corps.

Linebacker Jamie Collins, who has been dealing with an illness, is also questionable.

  1. No Edelman, no Gronk, iffy Amendola and the worst officiating crew this side of Jeff Triplette.

It might be a game after all.

  2. Will still win. And rest the key cogs. If this defense enters the postseason healthy, they will be nasty. Brown and Easley are rounding into form nicely.

You must be a Broncos fan. Congrats that it took the refs and OT to beat NE’s JV team.

  6. Glad they are not playing. Heath is the key to the next Superbowl win. It looks like most of the team will be back for the playoffs.

  7. This team is so good when healthy…every injury is to a key player. The fact that mayo is filling in for Collins and Hightower is a testament to their defensive strength this year. He used to be the defensive captain. And after all that, and the refs, they almost won against a team many feel will compete in the afc championship. Nothing’s changed people. Still going to dominate the AFC this year..

  8. Amendola, LaFell, Chandler, Bolden, Martin all play. But the big factor will be Blount, who will rack up 150 yds on that toilet paper Philly D.

  9. hightower is out. if amendola and Collins don’t play, eagles have a shot en route to their unlikely ascension to top of nfc east

  10. @bassplucker,

The officiating crew can’t possibly be any worse than the crew that worked the Broncos game.

In fact, I’ll take Pete Morelli’s crew any day. After all, there’s been no suggestion that they’re crooked – they’re merely incompetent.

The crew that that worked the Pats-Denver game on the other hand, was blatantly crooked. Haven’t seen a game so obviously bagged for one team since the 1972 Olympic men’s basketball finals.

  11. So, Tom Brady has played every game this season, Bill Belichick is still employed, and Robert Kraft was fined pocket change, but the Patriots have been “jobbed” all season? Got it. The Eagles will win this game.

  12. What team isn’t good when healthy?
Pats fans act like they’re the only team banged up but in reality they are lucky to have gone nearly 10 weeks without significant injuries. Don’t you think GB would be better with Nelson, Pittsburgh with Bell, Ravens with Suggs, Cowboys with Dez and Romo 100%, KC with Charles, the list goes on and on, not to mention Denver had significant injuries during that game as well. Its not an excuse in the NFL, stop crying NE fans!

  13. When Tom stepped in after Bledsoe got hurt he was hitting random receivers all over the field. It use to be an incredible stat. Analysts would joke about who he threw to – ‘the open receiver’. He’d have up to eight players that he targeted. No marquee name, just bodies. He needs to find these targets again, focus and hit them.

  14. wait, how close in Edleman to coming back ??

real question, I haven’t heard anything close to that though.

  15. And EVERY team is dealing with the poor refereeing. Denver beat you because they are a talented team, and I’m not even a Broncos fan!

  16. The claims of “karma”… due to what I assume are the mounting injuries on the Pats, are curious indeed.

I find this identical to the Southern Baptists’ claims of “karma” when soldiers, law enforcement, firemen die, or when severe storms ravage areas and kill people because… because why? Because it’s karma from God due to the legalization of gay marriage in the US.

Very similar mindsets at work there. But Brady still gets another Lombardi this year. That there is yer “Karma”!

  17. Edelman is first on the team with 61 catches and second with 692 yards and seven touchdowns.

Gronkowski is second on the team with 57 catches and first with 931 yards and nine touchdowns.

    ————————

Looks like government accounting. How does 4 more catches but 239 fewer yards and 2 fewer touchdowns make Edelman first on the team?

    Odd

The Patriots are more concerned with having healthy players for the second round of the playoffs through to the Super Bowl.

But ultimately I take this as a compliment, as with the assault on science and reason that was Deflategate. Much like Ender’s Game, the only way you can slow down Belichick’s dragon army is to completely alter the underlying rules of the game, like the Colts do after every Patriots loss. 38. Giants fan checking in.

If the Patriots get healthy before the playoffs they will decimate the AFC. A few NFC teams (Panthers, Cardinals, Seahawks and my Giants – God willing) could possibly beat them, but probably not.

Additionally, they picked up a new scat back this week to replace D. Lewis that I’ve never heard of (because James White sucks and can’t block, run or catch). My guess is that in 6 weeks he’ll be playing outstanding and we will all wonder how the hell that happened.

I’ve been watching football for a LONG time and nobody has been better than Brady. He’s not perfect, but on balance, he’s the best I’ve ever seen, season after season.

If the Giants don’t make it I’ll be rooting for the Patriots. I’m not fooled by all the “cheater, cheater” garbage. They are just damn consistent and damn good.

  39. They can still cheat to win without them.
With that in mind, why bother with 11 players on the field when just one will do?

  40. Most of the cogs of the Patriots are gone and they’re still rolling. Some elite teams lost 1 or two of their key players and where are they now?
Just rest up and the Pats will chug along to the SB. This is what discombobulate Goodell and his minion of haters. Even the refs are recruited to bludgeon the hobbled Pats.

  41. You make it sound like Edelman is day to day or something. He has a broken bone in his foot. I think we’re all pretty sure he’s going to be out this week, and (news flash) next week, and the week after…

Also, I’d compliment “aballinhighgrass” for the post above, but I’m not sure that it’s not a reverse jinx, so instead will reply thusly:

The Giants are dangerous, are the most likely team to come out of the NFC East, and could very well run the table through the NFC playoffs, particularly if they don’t have to go to Arizona or Seattle. Bill and the Pats have a ton of respect for Coach Coughlin and that fine franchise. A ton of respect. 🙂

  42. Why is this even a headline? Everyone knows Edelman is out 6-8 weeks. This is only the 3rd week!

And Gronk didn’t practice, so no surprise he’s not playing this weekend.

  43. Thanks aballinhighgrass for making such a thoughtful post. Not many here exercise that much common sense and brainpower.

  45. The thing about Amendola that really irks me is that at one time he was an Eagle, before they cut him after the last preseason game in his rookie year. I guess Andy Reid thought that he had so many better receivers. Of course, Dion Lewis wasn’t good enough for the Eagles either, yet he became a star with the Patriots (before getting hurt). Its amazing what playing with Tom Brady can do for an otherwise run of the mill player.

  49. I do not see what difference it makes who is in or who is out for the Pats. To listen to Pats-nation after the Denver game, the refs are out to get the Pats anyway. No way they let the Pats win another game for the rest of the season, right? I guess Pats-nation should throw in the towel now and look forward to next year. Of course, a lot of the same officiating crews will be back next year, so maybe Pats-nation needs to write off next year too. Aw, heck. Let’s close down the franchise. After all, if a team cannot go undefeated, what is the point of having the team? Right?

Yeah… but your all-pro QB sucks now, so that’s a benefit. Edelman, Amendola, Dobson. That’s worth at least a TJ Ward and Williams, right? It’s got to count for something that NE was down to WR4/5/6 and PR 4/5, right? Ware washes with Collins at this point in their careers. Both teams are missing their nominal starting LTs.

But then Gronk went out, and you still only won in OT playing 18 on 11 at home. Good Job. I’d say “see you in January,” but Denver’s just not that good. You’ll probably lose in the Divisional round, if you make it that far.
