Soccer game canceled over playing surface at Aloha Stadium, site of the Pro Bowl

Eight weeks from today, the Pro Bowl will be played at Alhoa Stadium in Hawaii. Today, the playing surface at Aloha Stadium was deemed unfit to host a soccer game.

The U.S. Women’s National Team canceled its scheduled game today because the players felt the turf at Aloha Stadium was unsafe to play on.

Very disappointed with the surface, to be honest,” said midfielder Carli Lloyd, via the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “I think coming to Hawaii is great and it’s great to be able to play here. But you take a look at the field, it’s just not good enough … You look at a surface like this, you just worry that people are going to get injured and something’s going to happen.”

NFL spokesman Michael Signora told PFT via email that the league will make sure that the playing surface is safe for the Pro Bowl.

“We inspect the Pro Bowl field every year well in advance of the game and on an ongoing basis to ensure that it meets our specifications and is comparable to other NFL surfaces,” Signora said.

One piece of good news from the NFL’s perspective is that the soccer players were most concerned about the state of the playing surface near the sidelines, which would be out of bounds during the Pro Bowl, as soccer fields are wider than football fields. And with the Hawaii Bowl slated to be played at Aloha Stadium on December 24, the league will soon have an opportunity to see exactly how the playing surface looks during a football game.

Still, the NFL already has a hard enough time getting players to agree to play in the Pro Bowl. If there are any concerns that the playing surface could cause injuries, more players than ever may decline their invitations to the Pro Bowl.

  1. This is the same women’s soccer team/federation that launched an official protest against Fifa a couple years back claiming that they shouldn’t have to on turf for the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Reason was partly safety, but mostly thet it was sexual discrimination, since the men could play on grass.

Nice of them to take sponsor money to travel there and then force a small country like Trinidad to fly there, and then yank the game last minute. An extra day on the beach I guess.,oh darn L, while organizers are left holding the bag having to issue refunds.

Guaranteed the field is fine, certainly for an exhibition vs a minnow, and most of them have played in much worst field conditions in the past year. But, they think they are making some sort of point for women’s rights by doing this.

    Really…

That turf claimed Rapinoe’s ACL yesterday, why risk it claiming another? The pictures the players have posted are extremely damning of the turf’s conditions. It’s a joke.

  3. at least US Soccer has an excuse, they didnt send anyone out there to check the condition of the field. The NFL on the other hand, knows the aloha bowl is a dump. They know there are ‘huge seams’ in the field and send the top 80+ players in the NFL to play on it once a year.
If this isnt idiotic I couldnt tell you what would qualify.
Roger could actually make a few brownie points with players and fans if he said ‘not again’ and either fix it or forget it. there are a vast number of places to play football and for the families to have great vacations and still be able to have a safe and practical field

  4. How about a flag football tournament in Central Park between the practice squads of the 30 teams not in the Super Bowl? Players on the winning team get a check equal to the Super Bowl winner’s share. Everyone else gets a “Participant” trophy. Certainly more entertaining than the Pro-Bowl.

Better yet, play Ultimate Frisbee. Or cornhole. Anything but that awful Pro-Bowl spectacle.

  5. Maybe if the NFL inspected the fields for it’s games RGIII would still be playing. Unsafe surfaces are definitely bad for the “integrity of the game”.

  6. After the farce that occured a few years ago that resulted in the nfl threatening to cancel the pro bowl does anybody really care one little bit if the league ends paying all those multi millionaires to an all expense trip to Hawaii for the players and their families to lounge in the sun and drink little umbrella drinks. being named an all pro is quite enough recognition to those exceptional players,no need for a useless game nobody but the moneygrubbers want to play.

  7. All Roger cares about is taking down New England. Phony deflation charges, referee manipulation, etc. Why would he care about field conditions? He ignored the Texans turf which chewed up players year after year. SF turf is equally dangerous. Offer Roger a couple extra million and he might look into it. When Blandino gets off of Jerry’s party bus, he might give his distorted opinions as well.

  8. @hawaiifunfnull

She tore her ACL at the UH Manoa GRASS field and it was on Friday. They even have video out there that shows them practicing on grass… you really shouldn’t blame it on the field turf at UH Stadium if you don’t even know where the practice was held…

Ever seen the commercial… I saw it on the internet so it must be true? … yeah… that’s not very smart. Spreading false information is not truthful, but there are people out there that may take it as truth…cause it’s on the internet.

  9. I guess in Hawaii they were too busy protesting the installation of a telescope on Mauna Kea, and combating the homeless problem, and trying improve their terrible traffic issues. As much as I love Hawaii, and I hate to say it, but they have become lazy political beggars tethered to and reliant on easy tourist dollars.

Thank you for guaranteeing the field is fine. How did you come about this conclusion?

Your clown shoes are laced too tight.

Get straight to the pharmacy for som preparation H to soothe your butt hurt bro. As far as the article, who cares? The probowl offers nothing to a fan of the NFL. Might as well watch quadriplegic MMA.

  12. It’s a women’s soccer game, it’s not like it’s Barcelona vrs Real and multi billion dollar soccer players at risk. Make the field smaller and play a five a side game.

    ===========================

Dinosaurs like you are exactly the ones the women’s soccer team was protesting against regarding discrimination and equal rights. Are actually you suggesting that the women’s team doesn’t deserve equal treatment just because they are women????

  14. No not at all. In fact once they get the goalkeepers sorted we might take it seriously. I just don’t get how the outfield players have improved technically but the girls between the sticks are still flapping around at the international level with the majority of these young ladies professional now there’s no excuse.
