With Marshawn gone, Russell Wilson shines

AP

Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch continues to recover from hernia surgery, the Seahawks look like the team they were in 2013 and 2014.

It may not be a coincidence.

Apart from the fact that undrafted rookie running back Thomas Rawls is playing better than Lynch, quarterback Russell Wilson has flourished as the unquestioned leader of the offense.

It may not be a coincidence. And as one source with knowledge of the team’s internal dynamics recently told PFT, it’s not a coincidence.

After the Seahawks abruptly traded receiver Percy Harvin last October, rumors and reports swirled that Harvin belonged to an in-house clique that resents Wilson — regarding him as “not black enough,” seeing him as being too aligned with management, and openly mocking his “Go ‘Hawks!” mantra in a high-pitched voice. Several of those rumors and reports linked Lynch to that group.

Then came the final offensive snap for Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX, when the team chose to throw instead of run. After the game, the media-shy Lynch gave an interview on Turkish television in which he added fuel to the anti-Russell Wilson fire by saying this: “When you look at me, and you let me run that ball in, I’m the face of the nation.  You know, the MVP of the Super Bowl, that’s pretty much the face of the nation at that point in time.  I don’t know what went into that call.  Maybe it was a good thing that I didn’t get the ball.  I mean, you know, it cost us the Super Bowl.”

While they’ll have to do it the hard way this year if they’re going to do it again, the Seahawks suddenly look like a team that can get back to the Super Bowl for a third straight time, with a 35-7 lead at Minnesota.

And Lynch is nowhere to be seen, which means he can do nothing directly or indirectly to undermine Wilson’s leadership.

And Wilson is having another huge day, with three touchdown passes and 19 completions on 24 attempts, for 256 yards.

And it’s not a coincidence. This is now Russell Wilson’s team, a reality that became inevitable once the Seahawks gave him a five-year deal worth nearly $90 million. The inevitable became a reality once Lynch left for hernia surgery.

The real question is whether Wilson will have the same authority and performance he now enjoys when Marshawn returns.

  1. Seattle looks really good lately. The past 2 years they have sputtered at the beginning of the season and turned it on near the end.

This is the Russell Wilson people thought they would see.

The game plan to beat MIN is stop the run like GB did. Seattle is doing it now and dominating the football game.

MIN passing game isn’t that great. MIN is AP. I never thought Bridgewater was a good QB, but his line isn’t giving him much time either.

  2. I said this a while back the seahawks needed to lose or trade lynch for a period of time or whatever to really discover what their offense could be in particular when Russell Wilson is captaining the ship. It’s been hard on him when you run first down run second down then ask your qb to throw behind a pourus Oline when the defense knows exactly what he’s going to do.

The seahawks have been throwing to setup run and with the speed and timing routes they’ve changed the entire look of their offense. Good to see Wilson Deal like this, us Hawks fans have seen it when he’s giving the right circumstances and not running for his life.

Hopefully the Vikes keep playing no one likes to watch a team quit.

  3. Wilson is absolutely having a monster year. He completion % and he is absolutely slinging the ball right now. If you look at his last 3 weeks you get a glimpse of what he can be.

The offensive line has started to protect and you are watching him sling dimes from the pocket. If defense play man and don’t account for him he kills them in the run.

Vikings defense isn’t bad and they are down 38 points today. No more putting of Wilson success saying its because of Lynch.

  4. Has an NFL team ever forfeited before? I would literally forfeit against the Cards on Thursday, get everyone healthy, for Norv Turner and spend the next 14 days installing an offense that can overcome the Vikings pathetic offensive line.

  5. Bbbbut you all said Wilson was a game manager. Nothing without Beastmode. Ha!
Love Beastmode and can’t wait for his return. HATE that the media continues to try to cause friction in the locker room.

  6. Trying to stir the pot with a real stretch trying to link Lynch and Wilson. Lazy blogging.

Bottom line,Rawls has come in and produced just as Lynch has for past years. He’s started to make proper reads on passes, and gotten the ball out the last few weeks.

Even if there is a clique, you think it was only Harvin and Lynch? There are other guys in that clique still in the room. Chancellor one of them, probably, given Lynch wore his jersey in training camp to support his holdout. So how does that fit your narrative?

  7. They took the Vikings off my TV because they were getting humiliated at home. They put on the Bears. Getting beaten and getting humiliated are two different things.

Welcome to the real world, your destiny.

  8. Man, Florio really hates Marshawn.

Even if that’s true, so what? Wouldn’t be the first teammates who didn’t get along. But it’s difficult to believe such an “in-house clique” would fall in line so quickly. Dude hasn’t been gone THAT long…..

  9. The Vikings are a train wreck again this year. How is even possible this team won eight games this year? Injuries? Cry me a river! Every team has them…lots of them. Sorry Vikes fans, you can’t use injuries as an excuse. This team is unimpressive, and are certainly a long, long way from being able to compete with the better teams in this league. Bridgewater looked terrible today too! Just not a very good team…at all!

  10. Where’s that poet? Probable in a fetal position under mommy’s bed, alternately sucking his thumb and crying…

  11. Here come the Hawks. Of course they can beat either Carolina or Zona. Hawks get in as the 5th seed and beware NFL. Beat the 4th seeded NFCE winner and hopefully travel to Carolina and put a dagger in their season.

This is not out of the realm here so don’t react like a troll and never question the heart of a champion and back to back SB participants.

  12. Wilson doing OK for a QB who can’t throw from the pocket, can’t put a team on his back, and is merely a game manager who is nothing without Lynch.

  13. Wilson’s resurgence has coincided nicely with the loss of Jimmy Graham.

He is no longer trying to force things to Graham, he is just playing ball.

  14. Can the media butt kissing and unearned fawning over the Vikings summer down now? Vikes choke in two big games in a row (Packets, Seahawks) and yet they are the toast of everyone’s town for some reason.

They were outclassed by the two NFC championship teams and are an average team. Vikings poor against teams with winning records.

  15. There won’t be too many nose-in-the-air Viking fans enjoying the opera or the symphony or the libraries or the museums or the ballet or the tall buildings or anything else this week…….except getting drunk and picking fights.

Which means things are back to normal.

  16. packer trolls enjoying the Vikings losing but they should have been wanting the Vikings to win. That would hurt the Seahawks chances for the playoffs. The packers do not want to play the Seahawks in the playoffs.

    000000000000000

Again for those that do not know the Poet is a packer fan trying unsuccessfully to be funny.

  18. Rawls fits right in with Lynch similar to the type of character that Carroll harbors – lots of people in Michigan know all about the hoodlum-like things he pulled.

I’m not sure I understand your point. The Vikings had 4 defensive starters out against the two time SB team. Your team needed a Hail Mary to beat one of the worst teams in the league.

So….your team, who is tied for first, is a shoe in? Ok. You can think that. Week 17 will show you otherwise.

  20. The vikings would have been better off without Teddy at QB today. Their offense is terrible! AP gets a whopping 18 yards rushing! He used to be in the MVP conversation. I doubt many will say he is now. Waiting to hear vikings fans rant about the bad officiating. It happens to every team and it’s just catching up with the vikings, now, this season.

Wait. What? You haven’t read any bold predictions from me. That’s for amateurs and rookies. I’ve been there before. You’ve got me confused with your trolling brethren.

  23. And the weeks just roll on by…to the playoffs…and another Super Bowl appearance by the Seahawks.

  24. I’ve been saying since we were 2-4 the season ain’t over nobody wants to play these Hawks in the playoffs but it’s one game at a time 12’s we’ll be in the post season and we’ll be in sf February GO HAWKS!!!

  25. This has been talked about before by those brave enough to say it. Lynch hates Wilson, always has. He is seen as not black enough, not authentic enough and being paid too much, while others like Cam are underpaid in Lynch’s mind. Lynch and Percy were good friends and of one mind when it came to Wilson and now, with both of them gone, at least temporarily, the team functions better. I love what Lynch has done for the Hawks and he deserves a lot of the credit for getting them to and winning the Super Bowl. But he is also a very divisive person and I won’t miss the drama when he is gone.
