Mike Pettine will decide today whether to start Johnny Manziel

AP

The music will stop again on the Browns’ game of musical quarterbacks today.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said after Sunday’s 37-3 loss to the Bengals that he’ll decide after watching the tape whether to keep Austin Davis in the starting lineup or go back to Johnny Manziel.

“We’ll make that decision [Monday],” Pettine said. “Get a chance to watch the tape and we’ll all circle back, circle up on it and see where we are with it.”

On the tape, Pettine will see that Davis did not play well. His numbers (25-of-38 for 230 yards, no touchdowns and one interception) probably make his play look better than it was, as Davis got a lot of yards in garbage time after the Bengals jumped out to a huge lead.

But Pettine previously said that Manziel was being benched because of his off-field conduct. If Pettine puts Manziel back on the field now, what message is he sending to Manziel? That he’s allowed to screw up off the field as long as the other quarterback stinks?

On the other hand, what message is Pettine sending to the rest of the roster if Manziel is the best quarterback available but doesn’t play because Pettine wants to prove a point?

Either way, the situation in Cleveland is a mess. The best news is there are only four games left.

  1. The fact that he needs to think about it says all you need to know about Pettine’s competence as a head coach. He should’ve been fired immediately after the game especially since he benched a guy for enjoying his bye week without getting into any sort of legal trouble. Pettine is in far over his head and it’s time to put Browns’ fans out of their misery with this clown.

  2. Pettine is in the same boat as Marc Trestman was in Chicago – a guy who was promoted to a position above his competency and is now paying the price. That being said, these are the kinds of seasons that keep potential new NFL HCs from coming into the system. You either get fired and nobody else will give you another chance as a HC, or you say no way I’m going through this again and self-select yourself out of the pool for other opportunities going forward.

He might still have a future in this league as a staff member with a better run franchise, but as a HC he is way over his head and I’d be shocked if he isn’t one-and-done in that capacity.

  3. IF Manziel has, in fact, an alcohol abuse problem, the worst thing for him, as an individual, is to backtrack and let him start. That will simply enable him to continue on a self-destructive path.
If he continues on his current path off field, only a matter of time before he is on the suspended list for substance abuse. What good will he be if he is sitting at home suspended, watching the games on tv?

  4. Let me help you out Pettine … nooooo!!!

Manziel doesn’t deserve to play. How do you get from 3rd string to starting? Be Johnny Manziel.

  5. For crying out loud just shut up already. I think it’s very evident that he doesn’t want Manziel to start. In a few more weeks it’s not going to matter. The front office and coaching staff are going to be blown up again and the new GM & HC are going to be instructed to accept him as the QB. I think it’s at the point where any new HC would avoid that job.

  6. I thought Davis played well and I didn’t see things get better in garbage time for him (he was down to Hartline, a practice squad player and special teamer at receiver).

Still, he can’t keep a play alive like Manziel can and his release isn’t as fast. Gritty performance, though.

  7. The message is, was, and always will be that the better you are the less you pay for your transgressions.

  8. Pettine is a Jeenyus.

Hey Jeenyus, we get that you don’t want Manziel.
    Manziel has acted immaturely.

Just start Manziel, and if he does well you can trade him for more than if you let him languish on the bench. If you can’t get much for him, the management will be LESS inclined to trade him.

So it’s in the TEAMS bets interest and YOUR best interest to play him, so you can move him.

That assumes you aren’t fired in the off season.

  9. How many games does Manziel need to miss for “the message” to be sent? Two? Three? Is there even a plan?

That’s the thing: there isn’t. Pettine simply knows that he doesn’t like Manziel, and thus uses EVERY excuse to keep him out of the lineup. It makes no sense to not start him now.

You play him and he plays well, and you either have trade bait or you find out that he has the potential worthy of giving him an entire year as a starter to learn and grow. If he plays like crap…. well, who cares? It’s not like his trade stock can go any lower, and if you lose games you get a higher draft pick. On top of that, any guys in the locker room who are working their tail off and getting annoyed that (who they perceive to be) the best QB on the roster is on the bench because the HC doesn’t personally like him, will be more likely to buy into what the organization is selling them.

  10. Fire Pettine. Start Manziel and start building around him. Short of anything criminal, who cares what he does off the field. Try treating him like an adult and maybe he’ll grow into one. You’re just babying him and acting like his daddy. Kids like to their parents, and you’re practically begging him to do it.

  11. I always remember what Pettines daughter tweeted after his Clevland interview, “…interview went well..IT”S THE BROWNS, but still pretty cool”! He should have listened to her! He might have been a decent coach in a functional organization.

  12. Just play the kid. No need to make a spectacle by naming him the starter. Run the playbook with him, see if he has been studying,if he has tried his best to become an NFL QB. The guy is being paid to perform, let everyone see if he can help the franchise.

  13. Manziel stinks, and he is going to look even worse than he is because the Browns have no playmakers and the players they do have know Manziel isnt any good but is playing because the owner thinks he is Jerrah Jones Jr.

  14. Pettine should not be allowed to make any more decisions for this team. We made a mistake again at this very, very important job. It’s time to cut our losses again.

  15. Once again, the fantasy-related armchair GMs chime in. I remember when they were all on the “Free Josh Gordon!” bandwagon. Good times…good times…

  16. all he is doing by not playing Manziel is hurting the team. if he wants to prove a point he should have started him and let him get his butt kicked if he was not preparing properly or if his off field activities were hurting him. you can bet if he got knocked around like he did in his bengals start last season again he would change his ways. the problem is pettine never wanted him to begin with and only started him this season when he had no choice. he played well and all he got was ripped by his coach. if he is forced my management to start him this week and I were Johnny I would come down with an injury Sat. night and be unable to play Sun. why put your ass on the line for somebody who does not believe in or want you on the team anyway? hopefully they hire a coach who will give him a legit shot or cut him so he can go to a team that will. it is time to stop worrying about what he does on his own time and find out if he can do the job or not.

  17. Pettine is a terrible coach and if Manziel doesn’t start this week Pettine should be fired before Sunday’s game. I would have fired him after the last game for not putting Manziel in the 2nd half. The message was sent. The kid was already benched and demoted to 3rd string. Now Pettine is just hurting his team to try and appear to exude leadership when it is perfectly clear the idiot couldn’t lead a mouse to a vat of cheese.

  18. Pettine will rationalize a scenario to start Manziel just as surely as day follows night.
Let’s hope he doesn’t name Johnny Done the starter for the last four games then have to back track when Manziel Has another brain cramp and goes out and does something immature to embarrass the team .
I’ve long grown tired of both Manziel and Pettine.

    ———————-

Austin Davis went from 3rd string to starting and I didn’t hear you complain about that?

The fact of the matter is that Manziel should never have been 3rd string. Pettine has backed himself into a corner of his own making.

  20. At some point the punishment should in theory be over. But it amazes me how many Cleveland fans have an issue with him being punished in the first place. Does anyone really believe that it’s acceptable for a starting QB to outright lie to the coaching staff? That’d be unheard of on most teams and it’s telling that a good chunk of Cleveland fans think it’s no big deal. You get the team you deserve.

  21. Here I’m just wondering if any other NFL players went out and had good time on any of their days off this year?

Pettine doesn’t like Manziel. Pettine is way over his head as a HC.

  22. If I’m the owner I wouldn’t give him the chance to make the decision….he would be gone by the end of the day….I have never witnessed a coach botch the handling of his terrible QB more than him, O’Brien tried but eventually picked a guy and cut the other….this clown has down this after every game….Brown’s fan I feel for you, no fan should have to endure such incompetence…..

  23. Seems like two games is a good punishment. Let’s Johnny play the last four so the team can showcase his progress to the world. I think they decided this a couple weeks ago, but don’t feel the need to share every decision with everyone

  24. Pettine will probably find out that Manziel didn’t eat all the meat on his plate last night at the team dining facility and use that as his reason for starting Pryor next week.

  25. Pettine should have been fired after last year for his handling of the QB situation. He has no business making any decision let alone being a HC in the NFL.

Pettine is a flat out loser. Hes incompetent and flat out stupid.

Johnny is one of the few players on this team that can play in the NFL.

Yet Pettine is going to compliment Austin Davis for an awful performance and Darius Jennings who had 5 catches for a whopping 35 yards. Pettine is a flat out joke.

    Embarrass the team? Seriously?

The whole Browns organization is an embarrassment. Even more so since they refuse to start their #1 draft pick.

  27. Let’s hope he plays well enough to make him “tradeable”.
Would loath to see this guy the face of the franchise.

  28. Rumors say that Johnny was spotted out boozing again at a local club the Saturday before their MNF game against the Ravens.

End this clown show and cut him. Then fire Pettine.

  29. The only reason Pettine hasn’t been fired yet is because there really aren’t any decent options to handle the team between now and the end of the year. I am reasonably certain that Pettine will be fired within the first week of 2016.

  30. There is a better option on the current staff hes the OC. He even ratted Pettine out for saying he (DeFillippo) didnt have the authority to call timeout vs the Ravens.

The blame falls squarely on Pettine and his so prepared QB Austin Davis. A 10 yr old playing Pop Warner football could manage the clock better than Pettine and Davis.

  31. Pettine is heading for the unemployment line. He is not head coaching material and is barely a good coordinator. There will be a new head coach in Cleveland next year.

  32. Let me ask you Mike, are you going to make the decision on JM before or after you make your decision on firing your butt buddy Jim O’Neil? YOUR DEFENCE STINKS, The Bengals scored on every drive in the first half with the exception of the first drive. Let me tell you again Mike, the Mike Pettine defensive scheme STINKS!

  33. Well I mean it’s not like he can do any worse than the 3 point embarrassment yesterday. I actually feel sorry for their fans because they were celebrating scoring a field goal yesterday like they won the game. That shows you how bad and dysfunctional it is.

  34. Austin Davis wasn’t great, but if you watched the game you would know he wasn’t the biggest problem. There was a Cameron Irving sized hole in the line the entire game. And once again the highest paid defense in the league looked looked like pure rubbish.

  35. If Johnny was out drinking who cares, can he help your team win. I am pretty he wouldn’t be the first QB out drinking during the season.

  36. You cannot run any business or NFL franchise on personality likes and dislikes, and disregard sensible business decisions.

Pettine is just petty. His power struggle with Farmer is not working out so well, but he does have an out: Manziel has no offensive line or capable receivers to assist his play. Just watch the injury report for this week’s game and who’s doubtful, and/or out.

Manziel has no chance to come close to a win. And Pettine will smugly reiterate “I told you so” as Farmer is replaced.

Jimmy Haslam, just promise the Cleveland fans that the situations of the last 16 years or so will never happen again. Use your power as a billionaire owner of an NFL franchise to right these wrongs for once and for all time.

Matt Prater was released by Denver for drinking. Josh Gordon suspended by the NFL for 1 year for drinking. When you have a problem, expect those responsible for you to put actions in place to help prevent your problem from recurring.

  39. Pettine, we know what we have/don’t have in you. How will we ever know what we have in Manziel?

Oh, you’re reluctantly starting him now, without any WR’s, without any run game, and players who have given up on you and your drama game. Yah, that’s a good measure.

What college did Haslam get his business education? Tennessee? Good, if my kids ever want to get a business degree, I’ll tell them that. Tennessee, the next best thing to college.

  40. “Jimmy Haslam, just promise the Cleveland fans that the situations of the last 16 years or so will never happen again. Use your power as a billionaire owner of an NFL franchise to right these wrongs for once and for all time.”

Haslam has already swung and missed twice in this regard. I don’t have any confidence that he can get it right at third time, although I think he probably should try anyway. What’s there to lose, really?

And this idea that it is Manziel who is embarrassing the Browns organization is ridiculous. I believe his rehab was more for drugs than for alcohol and I commend him for seeking treatment of his own volition, and that is in the past. Who cares now if he has a few drinks with his friends on his vacation week, especially when it didn’t result in any problems? How many people get demoted at work because of this?

  41. Maybe Pettine has already made up his mind and is just not telling the media. A lot of you and PFT are severely over reacting.

Also, to the “start Manziel” crowd, you don’t get handed a starting job just because you were drafted in the first round. You have to EARN the position when your coaches trust you. Nothing Manziel has done on or off the field has garnered the trust of his teammates or coaches.

Excuse me Cam Erving was getting blown up by Cam Hayward of the Steelers and Johnny threw for 372 yards. Thats becuz Johnny can play and Austin Dvis is garbage just like the Head Coach
    ————————–
…and they still lost 30-9 in that game.

  43. Dear Lord, here’s Pettine with the back-and-forth (i.e., wishy-washy) approach to head coaching that we remember with Ken Whisenhunt/Arizona and Tom Cable/Oakland. Pettine has got to go, Cleveland, c’mon already lol

  44. Pettine is not your problem, you could put any coach in that locker room and your season would look basically the same. You have absolutely no consistency, a team made up of players picked for probably 5 different offensive and defensive strategies each (and bad picks at that) and no consistent leadership for more than 2-3 years in a row for a lifetime. No coach will look good in that system.

You need to commit to a Coach and GM for at least 5-6 years at this point just to complete a single overhaul and not have such a disjointed team, if it’s still not working at least the next guys only dealing with one guys screw-ups, not 3.

Manziel lied to his coaches, that’s why he’s sitting. That is not what a franchise QB does, ever. He needs to go away and you should stick with Pettine, he’s the only adult in this fight.

Really? Has Manziel missed/shown up late for practices this year? Has he been called out for not studying the playbook this year? Was he horrible when he got a chance to play? Has he been criticized for not doing what he was told to do at the team facilities this year?

You also act like this is a playoff team and this is the first game of the season and they had a playoff caliber QB under center. It is not. Season is over. It is talent evaluation time. It’s been talent evaluation time for awhile now.
