Report: Johnny Manziel returning to the starting lineup

After the latest Browns loss, coach Mike Pettine said that the team would decide on Monday whether to start Johnny Manziel or Austin Davis against the 49ers in Week 14.

That decision has reportedly been made. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Manziel will be returning to the starting lineup after two weeks on the bench following the bye week partying that led Pettine to reverse course after naming Manziel the starter for the rest of the season.

Some might celebrate the news of a promotion by popping the cork on a bottle of champagne, but that’s probably best avoided by Manziel given the way things played out last time.

There may be some criticism of Pettine’s handling of the situation because it looks like the message that the team was sending to Manziel might run secondary to Davis’s poor showing against the Bengals, especially if other players have lost faith in Manziel. Criticism of the way Browns handle things is nothing new, however, and giving Manziel more time now should make it easier to come up with a plan for what to do with him in the offseason.

  1. Wish you had drafted RGIII now huh. Nooooo but you were so sure Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson were better! Hahahahah. 2 Division championships and playoffs in RGIII tenure lololol

  2. I thought that Pettine had integrity in giving appropriate treatment to a loser & team cancer like Manziel. But apparently I was wrong because it now seems like Pettine is caving to the owner’s whim in an attempt to save his job. Since it’s obvious that Pettine is going to be the fall-guy at the end of the season anyway, he should’ve at least salvaged his honor and refused the owner’s demand to start Manziel.

  3. Jimmy: “So, Mike, who’s starting next week?”
Mike: “Don’t know yet. We’ll watch the tape and…”
Jimmy: “Would you like me to call you a cab?”
Mike: (pressing intercom) “Johnny, I need to see you in my office right away please.”

  4. If Pettine hasn’t already lost the team, he has now.

What this basically says is that either Manziel or Haslam/Farmer is pulling the strings. At the point the HC is no longer deciding who plays and who sits, his authority in the locker room becomes zero.

  5. I have the feeling that they have no idea what the hell they are doing in Cleveland. What a sorry franchise their fans deserve a lot better than this.

Pettine never had the team to begin with.

  7. Pettine has proven that he lacks any ability or understanding of how to manage the clock or make halftime adjustments. Not just yesterday but for the entire season. Yesterday just magnified how utterly inept this team and coaching staff is. I’ve seen better coaching at the high school level. Most disappointing is Pettine’s delusional belief that all is well. He was quoted after the game as saying he was satisfied with the team’s performance!! The most depressing aspect is where to start to correect this train wreck. Sorry for Browns fans, this could take decades to fix.

  8. I’m guessing this means that Farmer is definitely staying, Manziel well if he plays ok, and Pettine is out the door no matter what happens the rest of the year.

Based on Haslam’s management of the team, that seems to confirm that the best move would be to keep Pettine, trade Manziel to Jerrah for whatever he will offer (could be a first rounder knowing Jerrah), and fire Farmer.

  9. “Some might celebrate the news of a promotion by popping the cork on a bottle of champagne, but that’s probably best avoided by Manziel given the way things played out last time.”

    Wow. Way to trivialize alcoholism.

  10. This sounds a lot like the Snyder/RGIII debacle. When the owner or GM start making calls as to who plays, nothing good ever follows for the team.
I wonder if Manziel is Haslam’s/Farmers’s drinking buddy.

  11. Doug Flutie made quite a career playing a similar style with a similar skill-set. The difference is, Doug LOVED the game, put in the work out on the field and in the film room, and had the respect of his coaches and teammates.

Johnny is more interested in being “Johnny Football” than an actual NFL QB. The kid likes the perks of being an NFL player, but I don’t think he actually loves being an NFL player and without that he will never succeed

  12. This is the Capt. We have one engine on fire and the other is low on fuel. Thank goodness we are in week 14 How much more of this nonsense can Cleveland take ? Trump should have bought the Browns instead of trying to buy the Bills. Trump would make Cleveland great again

  13. The reality of it is that if they want to figure out if he’s going to be any kind of reasonable answer at QB, then Manzel is going to have to start for 16 games (minimum) without being yanked. He’s going to make bad throws, reads, ect – just like any young, inexperienced QB will. The question is: how does he handle it?

  14. Johnny Rotten immediately went out and got drunk over the news of his promotion. Not necessarily because of excitement, but despair.

Yep. Pettine would have had Peyton Manning riding the bench if he had coached him.

  16. WoW 49ers vs Browns there’s two stellar organizations playing each other…I would love to be a fly on the wall listening to the two owners sharing there formula’s for success.

  17. Everyone wants to talk about QB play and Manzel, and that is what the coach wants to happen. He doesn’t want people talking about this crap defense he plays with the old veterans farmer brought aboard. We can’t stop anyone and we can’t run the ball.

  18. ……now Johnny….behave yourself or we’re going to put you back in TIME- OUT……What a classless and poorly organization the Browns are…..but those uni’s look maaaaarvelous!

  19. So, I get all of the Pettine criticism. No surprise there.

What does surprise me is the support that many Cleveland fans still put behind Manziel. Is this really the guy some of you want QB’ing your team?

Even putting aside the questions about whether or not he’ll get better, let’s say it turns out that he does get better and starts to have success. Do you trust how he’ll handle it? Do you see him as a leader and someone you can try to build a better team around?

  20. Let’s see how Manziel responds. He’s never looked fully committed even when he was the starter. How many other starting QBs have been been out late clubbing during their bye weeks? And that’s the guys who WEREN’T already in rehab this season.

  21. Time to forget about his character issues. From a playing perspective, just let him finish out the season. Starting him one games pulling him the next, and then starting him again just doesn’t make sense. Let him get solid experience under his belt.

  22. The fact they’re playing him now pretty much says they’ve either told the coach he’s going to play Manziel, or they’ve told the coach he’s already fired and he can finish the season with Manziel.

  23. An alcoholic who has reverted after rehab.

Yeah that’s who I’d want to pay millions to and trust to lead an NFL team.

    SMH

    Factory of sadness indeed.

Wouldn’t it be easier to find out from actually playing him, rather than just speculating?

It’s not like they are throwing away their playoff chances by starting the guy.

At this point, I’d figure that the Browns fans would take anyone that might provide some life to that sad franchise.

  25. And yet again, Johnny Football gets privileges handed to him yet again that he didn’t earn, while escaping consequences he was due.

Which is exactly how he turned out the way he is in the first place.

  26. Tom Brady couldn’t win a game with Cam Erving blocking for him, let alone Manziel.

Would not shock me at all if he’s hurt before halftime.

    #FireRayFarmer

  27. Maybe part of the problem in Cleveland is exactly what is happening now- running a coach out of town for doing the right thing for the team. Johnny football has done nothing to earn being the starter. For lack of a better term, he is a brat. Eventually he may wise up, but for now he isn’t ready. Maybe starting him sends another bad message. Maybe getting rid of a coach willing to do the right thing for his team is exactly the problem. Certainly, whatever the answer to the problem is, it isn’t Johnny football.

  28. Heeere’s Johnny.

Seriously, Cleveland must get a grip on an intelligent plan for the future of this team. Playing Manziel for the rest of the season is the first step.

Sure looked to me like some of those boys have already quit.

  29. I like Manziel better than about 99% of the commenters here. But even those of you that hate him have to admit that the Browns have mangled this situation so bad that they’ve actually turned him into a sympathetic figure.

They don’t even know if he’s a serviceable QB at this point because they didn’t let him play out the season, they kept doing this musical chairs nonsense.

  30. This should have happened a while ago. Johnny Football may be a jerk but you did spend a 1st round draft pick on him and you will probably have the number one pick next year so you have to find out what this kid can do. You need to find out if Johnny can play (or if you think he has potential) or if you are going to use that pick on another qb and send Johnny packing

  31. I know someone waiting for this opportunity. He led a team to the playoffs several years with thrilling rallies in the fourth quarters. He threw a touchdown pass in overtime to win a playoff game. He is clean cut and dedicated to football but he just needs a chance. I think that he can shakeup the dog pound. Forget Johnny (non)Football. It is ____ Time!

Perhaps they have already figured that out from practice and his dedication to the job. after a year of watching him in practice, and limited game snaps, perhaps they have figured out he is not the answer.

  33. Pettine: “You have failed me for the last time! Do not fail me again!”
Manziel: “Or that’ll be the last time!”
Pettine: “Yes… er, no… continue practising!”

  34. Looks like they are lobbing Johnny Done a softie, SF is only marginally better than the Browns. We’ll see what we see.

He’s won 50% of their games this year. That has to count for something.

    Lawl. Peyton Manning is done.

  37. Leave it to the Browns to run the world’s worst game of musical chairs. Being a Brown’s fan… man, I just can’t imagine the disappointment on a yearly (if not daily) basis.

And this is coming from a ‘Skins fan – so I know a little bit about disappointment – at least over the last 20 years or so.

With the instability that’s been part of Cleveland since their return to the NFL, I think it’s the worst mix you could ask for — having an always-controversial and polarizing guy in the most important position on a team that averages a new head coach every two years.

  39. Now Pettine can run Johnny out there with no WR’s, running game, the O-line giving up, O’Neil’s defense, and prove his point, when we lose….,”See how bad Johnny is? I told you so! Now, how do I look?”

No wonder Banner & Dumbardi fired Chud & his experienced staff for Pettine & his high school buddies. He was their time bomb for Haslam.
