DeSean Jackson on fumble: I’ve got to take it on the chin

AP

Dez Bryant wasn’t the only player riding a roller coaster of performance and emotion during Monday night’s game.

Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson was on the same kind of ride, but it was condensed to about a minute of game time. Jackson made a cameo appearance as a punt returner with less than two minutes to play and his attempt to spark his team with a big return turned into a nightmare. Jackson lost the ball after reversing course, retreating toward his own end zone and then trying to cut back upfield, giving the Cowboys an easy shot at the first touchdown of the game.

Jackson would catch a 28-yard touchdown to tie the game a minute later after Rashad Ross’s kickoff return went the way Jackson was hoping his punt return would go.

“Rivalry game. Trying to do any and everything to pull out a victory and we just fell on the short end of the stick this time. Very frustrating,” Jackson said, via CSN Washington. “A lot rode on this game and we knew what we had at stake. Personally, very frustrated. I’m going to take that one on my chin and I’m a veteran in this league and I know I need to protect the ball and it just got away from me. It’s the nature of the game. I feel like I’m a big threat in this league and I’ve been proving that for years to come. Just one of them things where just trying to make a play for my team, so once again, like I said, I’ve got to take it on the chin, a fumble.”

Coach Jay Gruden expressed no regret for putting Jackson back for the punt, citing his big play ability and a history of making big plays that includes a punt return touchdown against the Giants that lifted the Eagles to an NFC East title. That’s what the Redskins were hoping for on Monday night, but, thanks in large part to Jackson’s fumble, they wound up keeping a 4-8 team’s hopes of a division title alive instead.

  1. Jackson has a rap song about “white biches” and gangs. Remember all the gang signs he flashed on the field and claimed not to be in a gang? Well he is. The crips.

  2. I thought he was down. He looked stupid running back to his own end zone like that. People with neck or face tattoos are sure criminals.

  3. As soon as they showed him waiting for the punt and doing the ”let me hear it” thing to the crowd, I said I hope he fumbles. When he did, I couldn’t stop laughing. He is one of the biggest ‘look at me’ showboats in the league and often does dumb stuff like run down the goal line before he finally crosses it. The last couple minutes might have been exciting TV but it was some pretty awful situational football.

  4. very pathetic game to watch, offense was a JOKE didn’t take any chances until the end of the game and Desean Jackson wanted to play hero ball and lost the 34tpefjiopef game for us smfh..

  5. OK…Not at all a smart move, but let’s not call for his head…Dude got a TD right after. How many other guys can do that at the highest level?

    Not many.

“He was laughing after that play.”

This is factually incorrect. He was OBVIOUSLY very upset with himself. Anyone who actually watched that game long enough to see this play happened could clearly see that.

After the game Steve Young said he didn’t understand how that was a fumble. What in the world was he talking about?

Giants fan here. Wanted Dallas to win. Simply, it wasn’t a fumble. Jackson’s wrist/back of hand hit the ground causing the ball to pop out (try that at home, there’s a 0% chance you’ll hang onto the ball). By rule he is down by contact.

  8. I don’t understand how not only wasn’t it a fumble, but how no one is talking about it being a blown call (and review).

Incorrect, if his forearm was down the play would have stopped.

  10. The wrist is an extension of the hand, by rule. As another poster said, if his forearm would have touched he would have been down. Know the rules before you start saying it was a bad call.

  11. I’m a little confused as well. So the wrist and hand are part of the ball according to the rule so if the ball (and in this case wrist) hits the ground and comes loose isn’t the play dead? I thought the “ground can’t cause a fumble”? I honestly can’t remember but say a player is running and stumbles, uses his hand with the ball in it to catch his balance and in the process the ball touches the ground and comes loose, with no other part except his feet touching the ground, is that a fumble?

I’m a Cowboys fan and I expected it to be overturned. Happy it wasn’t but did expect it.

  12. I really do not understand WHY they didn’t take the reigns off Kirk. It was all dink and dunk stuff when there were CLEARLY downfield opportunities. I mean I understand Kirk was pressured a lot, but there were also ZERO adjustments to the pressure. They could have added another blocked in the backfield; they could have rolled Kirk out a lot more. I like Jay Gruden, but on this night I did not see enough adjustments. Enough of this playing it safe stuff. Lets get aggressive with the offense.

  13. He means a “hot deuce” on the chin–he’s a scat boy!! What about taking responsibility for your huge screw up????

Over rated and doesn’t care. He was laughing after that play. Redskins suck because of these type of players they have.

Where did you see him laugh? I’ve never a big fan of his, and he should forfeit half of his yearly salary for that unbelievably stupid and selfish play. Still, at least he looked devastated afterward, which redeemed him in my mind from being my most hated player in the NFL. I think he’s a selfish roosterhole, but at least he’s not that despicable.

  15. Payback for all of his bush league antics against the Giants.

Only thing better would be for someone to lay out this dude when he’s backpedaling and running parallel to the end zone.
