Marvin Lewis: Andy Dalton will miss at least a week

AP

The Bengals lost quarterback Andy Dalton early in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers, with a thumb injury. The Bengals won’t be getting him back soon.

Coach Marvin Lewis told reporters after the game that Dalton will miss at least next week’s game against the 49ers. He also said, via Aditi Kinhabwala of NFL Media, that the Bengals “need to move forward” with backup A.J. McCarron.

The next move beyond next Sunday will be the final Monday night game of the year and a showdown with the Broncos, possibly with a bye on the line. If Dalton can’t play in that game, the Bengals may have to play in the wild-card round for a the fifth straight year.

UPDATE 4:35 p.m. ET: Dalton separately said that there’s a fracture in the thumb, and that he’ll be seeing a specialist.

  1. Christmas season this year brings the Bengals their excuse for this years early playoff exit. Was going to happen anyways, but now the “If Dalton was 100% through Decemeber blah blah”.

  2. Broncos get a break as they have to face Cincinnati later this year. Do you think the Broncos can win a Super Bowl this year? It will be there first legit SB** without illegally paying their star QB and RB off the books like they did when they did in the late 90s. Imagine not having to worry about a salary cap? What an advantage. Broncos probably wouldn’t have been a .500 team without cheating.

  3. Dalton has had a terrific season thus far and was #1 in the league with passer rating and has been a top five quarterback all year. For the trolls to come out trashing over a dumb throw and a worse result, grow up and move out of your parents basements. God forget you break your Halo thumb, how would you type your shortsighted comments? Also make fun of the mans hair too. I guess being caught with red hair is worse than being caught red handed of rape. Absurd.

  4. Yeah so if we’re gonna decry Burfict as a dirty player, what does that make Mike Mitchell? Pray tell Steelers fans, I’d love to hear your breakdown of his inoffensive play and standup sportsmanship.

  5. Ginger daltons regular season is done. If his thumb requires surgery, he won’t make it back in time for playoffs. Jay Cutler fractured his on Nov 21 2011 and required surgery. He was placed on injured reserve.

If it doesn’t require surgery, he will need to heal quickly in order to be back for wildcard

  6. For what?

One of the dirtiest players I have seen in my 57 years of watching the NFL. He will get what he deserves and he will cost the Bungals a game if he doesn’t change.

  7. Hate to see Dalton hurt. I do say the Bungals have another player step up and be the dirtiest player on the squad in Burfict. The league will show themselves if this guy is not fined big time. he takes away from the quality players .

  8. The season is on the verge of being ruined by injuries. So many teams we really want to see at their best are getting hobbled by the week.

We may well see an injury-ruined playoff period and what-could-have-been Super Bowl.

The Panthers may end up like Golden State in the last NBA tourney – are they the best team? I guess so, but they weren’t really tested at the end. Hope not.

Nothing says “hypocrite idiot” like lecturing others on their unfounded garbage talk then making a false accusation not even remotely backed up by fact. Not a single NFL QB I know has been “caught red handed of rape” and if you’re referring to Roethlisberger you better read the court testimony. Because he was NEVER caught “red handed” of doing anything, including jaywalking. Tsk tsk.

By the way, might want to put away that cheap champagne and hats you had for the AFC North champs celebration.

  10. For all you Steeler fans, you won by 13 points against a severely depleted secondary and a backup who played all but 1 series. Where was your high powered offense? Your kicker looked good. AJ McCarron with starter reps might just keep Cincy fighting for 1 or 2 seed. Your team is still not even in wild card contention! Good win for ya’ll though. Tough Dirty play from both sides as expected in a rivalry game!

  11. And Steelers fans wonder why every fan of other teams think they’re the classless fans in the league.
Thanks for not proving anybody wrong Pissburgh!

  12. It’s sad for Dalton, especially with the year he is having. And it’s a loss for the team as well.

But McCarron was my favorite QB in his draft class, so I’m glad to see him get this opportunity. Dalton is out for at least a month with the fracture, so the kid is gonna get some serious reps in December and January. Hopefully that “big-game experience”
he got at Alabama will be helpful.

  13. Thing is, had Dalton rated healthy in this one it would of been an easy win, be marched right down the field on the one series he was in. AJ McCarron with scout team practice made your defense look silly at times and William Gay earned his last name today with that dance… And to the steelers fan who commented above saying that he’s watch NFL for 57 years… Go take some geritol gramps.

  14. Steeler fans gloating about beating the injury ridden bengals while they are still not a wild card team. Enjoy watching the other teams in the playoffs!

  15. @bengaljuice There is no Steeler who was caught red-handed of rape. There is no Steeler who was charged, tried or even arrested of rape

Considering the injuries that we’ve suffered this year I was almost about to feel bad for your team but after listening to idiots like yourself and watching Burfict try to break Ben’s ankle I say instead “good riddance to bad rubbish”

Playing the if game sonny? I guess then the Steelers would have beaten the Bungals in the first game if Bell wasn’t hurt?

Time for bed little man, so go up stairs and let us grown ups play.

  17. Let me get this straight, Cincy comes to Pittsburgh after a bye nearly 100% healthy as a team, beat Pittsburgh by 6, and looked fairly mediocre. Pittsburgh loses the best back in the NFL, a QB that wasn’t close to being 100%, a team that was one of the most heavily hit by injuries. Cincy dominated Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh goes to Cincy and wins. Puts up 33 points on the second best scoring defense, puts up almost 400 yards, and gave up 13 points before garbage time play. Pittsburgh “only won by 13”.

Tell me who are the delusional fans? Both teams needed the win, Cincy needed it to stay in the hunt for a first round bye, Steelers needed it to keep on pace for the wildcard. One team looked like a division champ and one team looked like a team on the outside looking in. Also, I thought the injured CBs didn’t matter since the d-line would eat Roethlisberger for lunch? Face it Bengal fans, Pittsburgh is still the better team despite Cincy Gavin the better record.

One last thought, not a big fan of Mitchell, he plays like Ryan Clark but not nearly as good. Would rather see someone else back there but they don’t have many options.

  18. Bengals fans it’s ok we know you have a good regular season team, but from your coach to your players they choke when it comes time for playoffs, your coach should’ve been fired along time ago how many decades are they gonna give Marv to try & win one, 3 division titles gonna get his fourth no playoff wins proper for the Queen City

  19. All of you complaining about injuries….Steelers lost an all-pro rb and center, starting left tackle, starting qb for 4 games….and yet we are still in it. Shut up, play the game. Bungles are a good regular season team…but not enough toughness to win in the playoffs.

  20. The Bengals have to have some of the worst luck imaginable. I really wanted to see if this was the year they were finally going to win a playoff game with Andy Dalton and Marvin Lewis. Now I hear that Dalton might be done for the year.
