Patriots clinch AFC East with Dolphins loss to Giants

The New England Patriots were able to sit at home, watch football and win a division title on Monday night.

By virtue of the Miami Dolphins 31-24 loss to the New York Giants, the Patriots officially clinched the AFC East title for the seventh straight season and 13th time in the last 15 years.

The Patriots’ spot in the playoffs had already been assured with their win Sunday night over the Houston Texans, but now it’s set in stone that there will be at least one playoff game in New England again in January.

Only the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and New York Jets in 2002 have won the East during the Patriots massive run of success since the turn of the century.

  1. Helloooo?

    Dolphins fans?

Are there any Dolphins fans left to tell me that this was their year and the Patriots are done?

    Anyone?

    Hello?

    Phins Up???

  2. “The division is up for grabs this year! The Dolphins, Bills and Jets all got much better and the Patriots got much worse! ”

    😀 🙂

    WOW !!!
    What a shocking development…

The Patri*ts are the champions of a division providing the worst competition for over a decade.

I think I’ve wet my pants.

  4. Another interesting fun fact: the pats have won more division titles, had more playoff appearances and wins, conference championship and SB appearances between the day the krafts bought the team in 1994 and BEFORE Brady was on the team than the jets have had in the last 45 years plus.

  5. Glad they clinched but it was pretty much a sure thing once the league turned against Brady and Brady smoked them in court. Next box to check is the 1 seed.

Would have been nice to clinch following a pats win though as the annual ‘hat and T-shirt game’ is always cool to see.

  6. remember before 2001 when the Pats had no fans?

    Nope, no one does.

win or lose in the playoffs no longer matters. The Pats own the Hateroids this season more than ever. Beat the NFLs feeble attempt at a frame job and have left them red faced, unable to publish psi since it would prove them liars and cynical idiots for thinking anyone but Hateroids would buy that nonsense. Division winners AGAIN. fumbles & pick predictions WRONG.

nothing lasts forever but right now life is good 🙂

  7. In 2008 and 2002 the Patriots lost the division on tie breakers. In 2008 they had recently thrashed the eventual division winning Dolphins 48-28 in Miami.

  8. I had to actually run the math to believe this considering the Jets are three back with 3 to play and have a game still to play against the Patriots.

As near as I can tell, it came down to strength of schedule and playing Denver and Pittsburgh, who are both assured of finishing at .500 or better was the difference. The Jets countered with games against Cleveland and Oakland. Thus the difference.

How much calculus did this take to figure out?

  9. They were already clinched. Even if the Dolphins won the best they could go was 9-7. The Patriots are already 11-2. The Dolphins are in last in the division. What are you even talking about?

  10. Amazingly, the two times they did not win title they finished 11-5 and 9-7 (losing the tie-breaker)

  11. And 2008 shouldn’t really even count – lost on a tiebreaker with Matt Cassel under center
Look for the competition committee to try to find a new way to try and slow the Pats down next year

  12. AFCE foes made big moves (Suh/Dolphins; McCoy/Bills; Revis/Jets) while Patriots had more defections & appeared vulnerable. So much for that.

  13. The World Champion Patriots now have an NFL record 15 winning seasons in a row and counting. That’s 10 more than the second best team in this category.

    🙂

  14. Really damaging loss last night for the Dolphins as well as Campbell’s aspirations to land the HC gig going forward. When you’re at home and you have a once-in-a-blue-moon (for the Fins) national audience you need to stand and deliver, even if the postseason is out of the picture for your own team.

That was a matchup of teams who have underperformed this season and the Giants underperformed a little less.

  15. remember before 2001 when the Pats had no fans?

This is just another hater/crybaby myth.

The Patriots have the BEST record in the NFL since 1994

    Most playoff wins since 1994
    Most SB wins since 1994
    Most SB appearances since 1994

Have sold out every home game since 1994

So , no. No one remembers “before 2001 when the pats had no fans” because it’s not true.

If you want to say they have more fans than before, okay.
But you can say that about ANY team in any city that has a lot of success.

  16. As near as I can tell, it came down to strength of schedule and playing Denver and Pittsburgh, who are both assured of finishing at .500 or better was the difference. The Jets countered with games against Cleveland and Oakland. Thus the difference.

Right. Also Strength of Victory comes before Strength of Schedule. The Jets have beaten the Dolphins twice already therefore the Dolphins loss last night “hurt” the Jets more than it did the Patriots… it guaranteed that if the Jets win out and the Pats lose out the Strength of Victory tiebreaker would be tied.

Then it goes to Strength of Schedule and the Pats have them beaten there as you point out.

I was all set to celebrate the Broncos division championship last week, but the 2nd half didn’t go as planned.

  19. I believe that is the seventh straight AFC East title for the Patriots. Once again, their divisional rivals won free agency only to lose the division to the Patriots. The Dolphins, Bills, and Jets all mortgaged their future on high priced star free agents. The Bills, thinking he could beat Belichick and the Patriots, made the mistake of signing Rex Ryan to a lucrative long-term head coaching position. While the Patriots were developing young talent key positions like cornerback, the Jets Brady suspended, instead lighting a fire under the a guy with a fire to win. The Dolphins continue to think that they can win with guys who care about money and South Beach.

Yup, there are kids in college who have never known a Patriots losing season. Think about that…

  21. My son is a freshman in high school. He wasn’t yet born the last time the Patriots had a losing season.

That last came in 2000, when they finished 5-11 in Belichick’s first year. Since then….

  22. I find it so damn funny…..The two teams (Indy and Baltimore) that trashed the Pat’s and make such a big deal about “deflated balls”…are having horrible years.. Poor coaching, two QB’s that are hurt, terrible players….
Guess the football gods have taken care of these sucky teams… So glad it happened this way..
Maybe in the future Teams will just play football and stop with all this crap…

  23. Tee hee 🙂 I think it’s freaking hilarious that Patriot Hater really believe their limp wristed skirt wearing wuss of a team belong on the field with US!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA:DHAHAHAHAHAHA:DHAHAHAHAHAHA:DHAHAHAHAHAH:D

Yup. Funny that quite a few NFL teams really did need deflated footballs to be any good. The fact that those teams reek this year without the help of cheating and deflating footballs is quite telling isn’t it. 🙂

Flash, I would even take it a step further. While there were obviously some horrific seasons for the Pats prior to 94, there were also some solid stretches…..The Fairbanks teams of the 70’s were SB contenders and who could forget their run in 1985? There are still a handful of teams that have never made the SB or been in decades….the notion that the Pats were non-existent and had no fans before even 1994 is a farce.

  26. The #2-4 teams in the AFCE have more wins than #2-4 in any other division… so yeah… go ahead… look how soft they have it

  27. I’ll grudgingly congratulate the Pats on clinching
their division again. Well done from a fan of a rival.
That 13 out of 15 is truly an impressive achievement.

In my view, maintaining that kind of consistency
is many times more difficult, and hence more
impressive, than winning a SB in a particular year.
