Dolphins promote Logan Thomas from their practice squad

The Dolphins must have noticed something in practice lately to think Logan Thomas has a future with them, or else someone else did.

The team announced they had signed the quarterback off their practice squad, waiving offensive lineman Jeff Linkenbach to create the roster spot.

Thomas was claimed off waivers by the Dolphins in September after the Cardinals cut him, but he was cut a week later and signed to the Miami practice squad.

The Cardinals gave up on the former fourth-rounder after one season, in which he appeared in two games and completed just 1-of-9 passes.

Thomas is an interesting mix of size and speed, but hadn’t previously shown more than raw material. The fact that quarterback whisperer Bruce Arians was willing to punt on him so quickly might have scared some people off.

But at a time when teams are scrambling for quarterbacks, for now and next season, the fact that the Dolphins promoted a third they don’t have immediate need for (though backup Matt Moore is a pending free agent) suggests someone might have been interested in Thomas for their own roster.

  1. He’s got the physical tools but it’s unknown whether he can learn to read the field quickly enough for the pro game. His lack of mental speed was a weakness in college and the primary thing he needs to improve if he’s going to make it as a pro.

I wonder if the Ravens were thinking of calling him.

  2. …well, Tannehill doesn’t appear to be the franchise qb he is being paid to be…below the league average in QBR, and when was the last time he rallied his team to victory…

  3. Remember; this is the guy Bruce Arians had so little faith in that he actually sought out and signed RYAN LINDLEY, and played him instead. Good luck, Phins fans.

  4. Logan has a strong arm but he has accuracy issues & trouble going through his progressions.

Arians playbook could partially be the reason he has had trouble. It took Palmer, Fitz, & most of the offense a half of season before they started clicking on offense in Arians first season. Imagine how difficult it could be for a very raw rookie that has always had accuracy issues in college.

  5. I’ve always thought Thomas should become a tight end. It was clear in college he doesn’t have the accuracy to be an NFL starter, but with his size and speed he could be a Jimmy Graham type player.

  6. I would like to see him convert to a tight end. After Miami does not have any and was willing to spend a draft pick on a Missouri tight end when all Tiger TEs fail, Michael Egnew.

Here’s the red flag, Thomas never even played high school basketball and that will make a transition harder.

…well, the Fins aren’t giving any consideration to replacing Tannehill with Thomas by adding him to the roster, so the official Logan Thomas Fan Club will have to put his jersey shirt orders and line of autographed footballs on hold.

  8. As a Cardinals fan – Here’s the inside on Logan Thomas. HE SUCKS!
If gets in – be shocked if he gets you three 1st downs in the entire game….yes 3.
If he plays I’ll be calling a bookie to bet the house against him.

  9. Bengals were after him. But it is still easy to read into this. Setting up some cost cutting as Matt More’s replacement?

Chargers released defensive back Jimmy Wilson on Tuesday, a former Fin. And they are hurting bad at the position from injuries and lousy play the likes of Jamar Taylor whose missed assignment MNF left a wide open field for ODB to scamper in for an easy TD.
