Titans, Browns, Chargers vie for first overall pick

AP

With three weeks left to play, the race for the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft is heating up.

The Titans, Browns and Chargers are currently tied for the worst record in the NFL at 3-10, meaning they’re the three teams with the best chance at earning the first overall pick. The first tiebreaker for the draft order is strength of schedule, with the team that played the weakest schedule picking first. That favors the Titans, who play in the AFC South and therefore have an easy schedule.

The Browns have the toughest remaining schedule of the three, which means they have no chance of catching the Titans in the strength of schedule tiebreaker. But it also means the Browns are the most likely of the three teams to lose all three remaining games and finish 3-13. The Titans and Chargers still have two games each against opponents with losing records, which means they’re both at risk of blowing their draft order by actually winning a game.

Here’s how the current draft order looks, heading into Sunday:

1. Titans, 3-10, .471 strength of schedule
2. Browns, 3-10, .512
3. Chargers, 3-10, .521
4. Ravens, 4-9, .482
5. Cowboys, 4-9, .547*
6. 49ers, 4-9, .547*
7. Lions, 4-9, .571
8. Dolphins, 5-8, .467
9. Jaguars, 5-8, .471
10. Saints 5-8, .538
11. Bears 5-8, .541
12. Buccaneers 6-8, .454
13. Rams, 6-8, .530

* The Cowboys are head of the 49ers based on the second tiebreaker, a worse conference record.

  1. Someone make a report on which teams have had the highest overall picks in the last 10 or 20 years. Add up what number picks each team has had, lowest total is the winner. (In this case loser).

  2. I smell a Chargers tank, giving them the #1 overall in their return to LA. Which sucks.

  3. I’m really hoping most of these teams win a few games and my Falcons get a top 10 pick. Because they certainly aren’t going to win any more games.

  4. If the Browns win one or more of the last games it’s because the team is coming together around Johnny. I will happily take that outcome over us blowing a high first rounder on a weak QB draft class. Just win baby. Especially against the stealers!

  5. .
At first glance, Cleveland needs a QB, the Titans a DL and the Chargers an OL.

Cleveland will have to pass on Ohio State standout John Bosa to select a QB, probably Lynch or Goff.
    .

  6. Ooooohhhhh, exciting! Though its old hat for these loser clubs this time of year. It’s kind of like what the Patriots feel like when they get to AFC championship every year

  7. Will Ray Farmer be making that pick for Cleveland? That movie Draft Day will always be relative because Browns will always be picking in the top 10

  8. Since the Lions have the strongest strength of schedule among the league’s worst teams, does this mean that we’re actually the best of the worst?

  9. 1, 2,or 3 makes no difference. Throw a dart. You can measure the measurables but can’t get inside a head or a heart to check his passion, love and desire to play the game.

  10. Bears really blew that 1. After week 3 and being winless they were given the top runaway odds to pick first. Big reason they are always in neutral is because they always pick from 7-20. Either be really good or really bad. It is the only way

  11. Th x factor in all of this of course is the playoff teams. Remember this spring when the 7-8-1 Panthers drafted behind teams with 10 wins who didn’t make the postseason? Not that it wound up hurting the Panthers obviously but with the weakness of some of the divisions this year it wouldn’t surprise me to see something like that happen again.

  12. That week 17 game between they Bears and Lions will have big Draft implications. I think I’ll root for the Lions to complete the series sweep for the 3rd year in a row.

  13. The Jags are in the best position. Playing for a division title AND getting a top 10 pick if things don’t work out. Beautiful!

  14. Biggest loser is the winner of the NFC East… they get eliminated in the first round, they have a bad team, and yet they draft like a playoff team.

  15. What sucks is when a team playing for a draft pick affects a possible play off team’s chances to make the play offs by not playing their game to win. The Colts did this to get Luck and I will never forgive or forget.

  16. I’m sure whoever the Browns pick, he’ll be proud to join the ranks of other recent Browns’ first-round studs like Justin Gilbert, Cameron Erving, Trent Richardson, and Larry, Curly and Moe.

  17. spiffybiff,

Yep, because Odell Beckham, Todd Gurley, Dez Bryant, among others aren’t just a few players who have been picked 10th or higher. If your team is always picking bad players, that’s on their front office, not the position of the pick.

  18. Hope there’s no suck for luck situation that the Cowboys fell into. That’s all they’re missing. A qb who can stay healthy.

  19. bangs head against wall .

die hard Browns fan since 67 .I keep banging my head against the wall I will look like Peyton big head Manning .

Don’t let Farmer anywhere near ..

  20. in my star wars weekend theme Darh Vader voice
it is the Browns Destiny!!! too have 1st overall
and for the people who say these QBs are Weak
umm i’d happily take Paxton Lynch 1st overall 6-7 230ib cannon arm and can be mobile when needed and can read defenses.

  21. Even if the Browns get the first pick, what are the odds they’ll get it right? If Farmer remains the GM, the Browns are screwed. He’s made some horrendous picks.

  22. Look out Browns fans. Here comes my Lions. After we go “O” fer the rest of the way, we’ll be battling you for our normal spot in the draft……………… The only thing the Ford family has been consistent at since buying this organization……………………..

  23. Never understood this late season drive for the lottery playoffs. All those teams are vying for the worst position without making it seem like they are doing so. It is like these teams are vying for an oscar. To make it interesting, have polls based on acting merit. That is, whatever team acts the best, but still manages to suck, wins first pick.

  24. I’m hoping the Browns can right their ship, and I think most fans outside of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh probably feel the same, but man, their drafting history…geez.

  25. This is a year with no clear cut #1 pick and thus no real advantage to having it. Therefore, the Browns will get it.

If there was a clear-cut, no doubt about it franchise player available, they would eke out a win in the last game of the season and lose a tie-breaker to one of the other two teams.

  26. milwaukeeguy, as a Steeler fan it would be nice to see the Browns not stink up the North. I felt that way about the Bengals too, and their fans don’t know how to act. Browns fans, don’t let success of your team go to your head.

  27. spiffybiff,

Yep, because Odell Beckham, Todd Gurley, Dez Bryant, among others aren’t just a few players who have been picked 10th or higher. If your team is always picking bad players, that’s on their front office, not the position of the pick.

But that’s why Packer fans say Ted Thompson is such a horrible GM.. He’s always picking in the 20s when all the good players are gone. So they say.

  28. the real question is do the chargers take Goff #1 , and cut rivers, put 4.5 in dead space, but clear 16.5 off the books. One would have to think after they tried to move him to the titans last year while not in the driver seat, that they can easily just throw him out the window now. Might even be able to trade him to the browns and end up with a 1, 2 scenario. Bosa and Goff

  29. For those who saw the Cowboys 5th and wondered when the last time they picked in the top 5 it was Terence Newman 5th in 2003. Before that? #1 overall Russell Maryland in 1991.

  30. Browns get win #4 in Seattle this week, it’s going to be awesome. One of the backup to the backup CBs picks off Wilson on the 5 with less than a minute to go. 21-16 woof woofs. After the game Pete Carroll announces he’s going back to mend fences at USC, the program he screwed over and bailed on.

  31. As a s Bears fan the issue is that they can’t be the best of the best and they also fail at being the worst of the worst! 2016/17 here we come!

  32. And yet my Niners just got pummeled by the Browns, outcoached by Pettine. The Browns may be picking ahead of the Niners but it really should be the other way around.

  33. Chargers fan Humbolt, whatever happened to that guy? That once proud Charger fan has yet to be heard from this year.

  34. Browns trade the #1 pick to the Seahawks for DE Michael Bennet. Pettine and Bennet = BFF’s!

  35. My money is on my Dolphins… Notorious December Meltdowns! Sorry Chargers Fans, I know you want that Pick, but Miami is travelling to the West Coast on a short week with 3rd Stringers on Defense. We also have only had 3 games in the last 2 years with all starting OLinemem. Oh forgot to mention we have the $90m Mr. Tannehill a.k.a. Mr. Mediocre, Check Down Charlie and was a WR in College.. Enjoy the Win!

Spot on. But just in case the Dolphins do win out, now there is nothing riding on the last 3 games except pride i am bracing myself for the Dolphin apologist Andy Cohen of Dolphin digest waxing lyrical about the last few games if they win out.
