The defending champs are closing in on home-field advantage.
The Patriots had an easy time of it beating the Titans today in New England, jumping out to an early lead and then coasting to a 33-16 win. That win gives New England an AFC-best 12-2 record. If the Patriots win their two remaining games, they’ll have home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
It wasn’t the best performance of the season for the Patriots, but against a bad Titans team it didn’t need to be. Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for an early touchdown pass, and New England got solid games from running backs Joey Iosefa and James White, which is good news following the season-ending injury to LeGarrette Blount.
The Titans had a rough outing: Marcus Mariota suffered an early knee injury and left the game, and although Zach Mettenberger wasn’t terrible, he wasn’t very good, either. The Titans did get a big game from rookie receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, which is a good sign that he could be a building block for a good offense in the future.
The Patriots aren’t thinking about the future, however. They’re thinking about winning next week and getting another step toward home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
