Panthers’ black baseball bat is a red herring in Beckham case

With the league office possibly poised to suspend Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for essentially losing his mind on Sunday, the Panthers believe that the Giants are trying to work the media to justify Beckham’s behavior.

The supposed justification comes from the fact that, for weeks, the Panthers defensive backs have taken a black baseball onto the field during pregame warmups as a motivational tool. As one team source put it, the bat is a “symbol of making home run plays and bringing the wood.”

The source added that, in the opinion of the Panthers, the “Giants are trying to distract from Beckham’s antics.”

That the bat was on the field is undeniable. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports has posted video of Norman holding the bat before the game. Elsewhere, video has surfaced of a Panthers player in street clothes carrying the bat toward the Giants as they ran onto the field during the game, at one point motioning with the bat toward the opposing players. (A team source says it’s safety Marcus Ball, a member of the Carolina practice squad.)

Cornerback Bené Benwikere also has posted a photo of himself carrying the bat out of the tunnel last Sunday, prior to the game against the Falcons.

Here’s what Adam Schefter of ESPN had to say about the issue on Facebook: “In pregame warmups, at least one Panthers official, and possibly more, carried black baseball bats on to the field and were motioning with them towards Odell Beckham Jr. while making comments to him, per a league source. Norman later grabbed the black bat and was swinging it in pregame warmups — which, by the way, an NFL Films camera captured. Beckham, according to another source, felt threatened and it helped put him in a certain frame of mind. It does not excuse what he did during the course of the game, but it does explain what led up to the battle that still is the talk of the league today.”

Sorry, but I’m not buying the idea that Beckham was threatened by a baseball bat unless someone actually brought it onto the field during the game. (“Is that a baseball bat in your football pants or are you just happy to see me?”)

Also, and contrary to Schefter’s use of the term “bats,” there was only one bat. There’s no evidence that the Panthers had more than one bat, which would have been necessary only if the two teams had decided to settle their differences not through a game of football but via a rumble.

The far more likely explanation is that Panthers cornerback Josh Norman pressed Beckham’s buttons during the game, with chatter and an early body slam that contributed to a fuse blowing in Beckham’s brain. But that explanation doesn’t conveniently morph into the kind of excuse that can be used by the Giants to lobby the league office to not suspend Beckham.

However it all happened, it’s on Beckham to control himself. Football is an inherently intense and emotional sport, and Beckham needs to be able to deal with behavior a lot more threatening and intimidating than a baseball bat being waved around before the game even begins.

  1. There’s plenty of video on-line showing more than one bat – if you did your job the right way, you would know this.

  2. Just another example of anyone who supports the Giants trying to defend this privileged athlete who has never been told no.. Are you serious? Did he bring the bat on the field? Did he swing the bat? SHUT UP! You media are jokes. If you think this is a story and is a way of defending beckham, you’re awful at your job.. get a life! UNREAL! WHO CARES!

  3. Panthers are a bunch of arrogant turds, definitely doesn’t excuse what Beckham did whatsoever. But I for one cannot wait to see these Panthers knocked down a few pegs…this coming from a fan who loathes the giants

  4. A fair assessment Mike. ODB lost control, there is no doubt about that. I believe he got caught up in a physical game, a game Norman routinely plays, but ODB took it too far.

Obviously, we have no idea what was spoken between the two. I think both players were equally to fault until ODB took the diving head shot. That was inexcusable.

That said, a baseball bat has no place on the field in pre-game warmups. This is football, you should not need a baseball bat to remind yourself to get pumped up and ‘bring the wood.’

How that is lost in your post, I don’t quite understand.

  6. There was an episode of Inside the NFL this season with Norman matched up against Julio Jones. Julio didn’t even acknowledge him while he was talking trash and yelling the whole game. That’s how it’s supposed to be handled. Getting upset and acting like a fool is exactly what Norman wants you to do.

  7. Oh, OK. It’s all about the bat, not about your self-loving diva WR acting like he owns the league and is above reproach when he dangerously head hunts like a child.

  8. I, uh…. Well, the thing is…..mmm, You see Odell,….

Well crap, I got nothin’ …

  9. Mostly, this entire story is still a joke. Living in a modern world revolved around social media has made people softer than scrambled eggs.

    Get over it.

  10. It is has nothing to do with the actions of obj, but the entire panthers act is starting to wear pretty thin. I am looking forward to seeing someone put these obnoxious overachievers back in their place. However, given their ridiculously easy divisional opponents they have left, I guess it will have to wait until the playoffs.

  11. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The Carolina Panthers are the Iowa Hawkeyes of the NFL and they will meet their Michigan State in the playoffs.

  12. Good thing it was a Black bat if it was a White Bat CNN and Fox would be stationed outside of Panthers headquarters for the next 3 weeks waiting for Obama and the protesters to show up.

  13. I was just telling a friend of mine last week, the guy is a heck of a player, but a bizarre dude. He gives opponents sucker punches then runs and hides behind teammates, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy gets on the “most hated players by other players” list.

  14. So what about the part where Deion Sanders was notified that Josh Norman went up to OBJ in pre-game warm ups with the bat saying he was going to “end his career?”

Listen I’m all for using a bat as motivation for your team, but using it and saying you’re going to end someone’s career is another story. Norman playing the victim is getting old.

  15. If bats help you remember to “bring the wood”, maybe teams should go out on the field with pipe bombs and IEDs, so they remember to “PLAY WITH EXPLOSIVENESS!!!!”

  16. 1. I guess this means there won’t any more baseball bats at baseball games as they are threatening to the other players on the other team…

    2. At least Norman didn’t use his helmet as a weapon….

  17. According to Deion, via the Rich Eisen show, the practice squad player was making threats at OBJ about ending his career and taking out his knees. Aggressive derogatory comments about about OBJ’s sexuality were also made. You can hear hints of it in Norman’s post game conference (prancing, dancing, etc.)

Instead of criticizing OBJ for not controlling his emotions, let’s also hold the Panthers accountable for behaving like turds to incite. They’re not innocent in any of this.

  18. I’m losing a lot of respect for these Panthers. I mean, really….you have to bring a baseball bat to warmups and shake it at the opposing team ?!?! That’s the lowest class thing I’ve ever heard !!!

Doesn’t excuse Beckham’s meltdown — but it does give it a little more context. Based on the videos…….it’s cheesy.

  19. Does OBJ think they are going to jump him or something?

I remember watching an LSU vs Georgia game and when the Bulldog came on to the field he jumped into La”El Collins arms for protection.

  20. For those old enough to remember the movie The Warriors….I kept flashing back to the scene with the gang carrying bats and people yelling Warriors come out and play…..

  21. Dear God, the media will look for anything to protect New York and their star players. Did Beckham think they were going to actually hit him with a bat? Come on. It’s a form of symbolism that represents “taking the wood to the opposing team”, “hitting a home run”, and “making big plays”. Suspend OBJ, or as like to call him, ODB (Old Dirty Bastard) and move on.

You win the award for most ignorant Comment. A lot of it was chippy yes, throwing eachother down, etc…. is fine. Launching urself at a player’s head and not even caring about the play at hand is not being ‘chippy’. Thats called trying to end someones career.

  23. Everything is a red herring. Beckham let Norman get under his skin. Know how to shut up a CB? Do better than 6 for 76 and a score.

  24. Beckham is a dusch bag! League rule should be: Either let them fight without a flag or flag both when it happens. I remember bounty gate and the suspensions then and this sure looked like a cheap shot to injure and take Norman out. This was caused by some of the giants players taking up a offering for Beckham to take him out. Instead, he looked like a fool as the clock ended with a loss. Beckham is street trash who deserved to get the “Blank” kicked out of him, but the panthers were more professional to fall into his immature selfishness. Admittedly, Norman should have been flagged for the first slam, however, I say bring back the hockey days of football and let them go at it to release some of that “alpha male” out, as Cam said. This isn’t a girl sport. This is why they’ll be sitting at home watching Carolina play and they’ll be seeing what a real football team looks like as Carolina goes undefeated through the SuperBowl!

You can tell the Panthers are not use to winning

can tell you’re not used to English.

  27. Seems like everyone is ok with Josh Normal straddling Beckham after the play and dropping his groin on top of Beckham’s head when he tried to get up. Disgusting move by a disgusting player.

  28. No reason for a baseball bat on a football field and that dude Ball ain’t good enough to suit up on Sundays

  29. As I said, so what he had a bat?lol
Did he think- OBJ was going to Pitch to him? Lol, could you imagine if LT or Carl Banks, Peppers were still playing? lol lo They would have told Norman- “I’m going to rap that bat around your neck”-LT lol lol at Bat lol oh boy, please stop! ODBJ was out of control, period!!!

  30. This is so ridiculous. It’s as if no player has ever hit another guy ever in the NFL! I mean there was a Steeler player that hit someone in the helmet and no one is saying peep!

By the way, you completely missed the part where it was stated that Norman actually pointed the bat at Odell and threatened to end his career.

And what about Norman’s antics on the field? He literally body slammed Odell, punched him, grabbed his facemask? Yes but he is an angel. PLEASE!

  31. I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, nothing the Carolina players did during warm-ups excuses Odell from completely losing his head (and apparently trying to remove Norman’s) during the game. On the other hand, if guys are bringing baseball bats onto the field in order to threaten opposing players, that’s completely reckless and irresponsible. Hard to believe that Panthers officials would be dumb enough to do that, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  32. If OBJ gets suspended, he will deserve it, but thank you Fox network for the creative edit and commentary that leave out how it got started. OBJ got body slammed during the first series right in front of the ref and nothing. It in no way condones what OBJ did, but just think how differently the game would have gone if the ref had the courage to do his job the first time it happened?

The Panthers have been soaking up wins over a weak NFC East and a weak AFC South and a weak NFC south. They will be just like the Bills during the years they went to the superbowl. Paper champs who will be gutted like fish once the get there. Sorry, IF they get there.

  33. Beckham is an immature a-hole who needs to be suspended, but why are Panthers walking up to the opposition swinging a baseball bat? Why is a baseball bat needed on a football field?

  34. Hey Panthers (& fans),

welcome to the, “everyone hates you because you’re a winner” club. You will now enjoy what the Pats have for the past 15 years, accusations of every crime imaginable. If you go 19-0 in the Participation Trophy Era you will be hated, people will know you cheated, videotaped, installed rocket boosters in your shoes etc etc.

Feel good about this Carolina fans. You are now experiencing what is know as “relevance” and all of the vitriol that comes with it. Fans of Giants, 9ers, boys, raiders, skins, packers, broncs, fins, steelers all (used to) know what this feels like. Welcome aboard!

  35. Not long ago the league was all over the Saints for a bounty program and the Patriots for air pressure in a ball. The media also was in high C over this too. Now we have people threatening to kill another team’s player if they show up at South Beach and people bringing baseball bats onto the field and not a peep from that incompetent excuse for a Commissioner. Some of these people are criminals and should be dealt with as such.

  36. Not buying it, at all.

This is not the first time that Beckham has thrown punches during a game. He took a swing at Duke Williams back in October after being blocked in a way he didn’t like during an interception return. He is clearly a guy that loses control of his temper when the play turns physical. Norman knew this, got into his head early with a body slam that should have been called but wasn’t, and from that point forward turned OBJ into a non-factor in the game. As much as his circus catches and obvious natural ability can turn the tide of a game in his team’s favor, his lack of mental toughness and temper control can turn the tide against them.

The Panthers have won 18 consecutive regular season games going back to last year. They’re clearly used to winning at this point.

  38. If the truth was that Norman was trying to get into OBJ’s head, then mission accomplished. OBJ should have taken the high road and ignored him. Norman would have given up quickly when he saw that he wasn’t getting to OBJ – it’s how you defuse a bully; it’s been that way since the beginning of time and will continue to be that way until the end of time.

That doesn’t excuse OBJ from his behavior; I am a Giants fan and I am all for him being disciplined. Hopefully this will be a lesson for him and he’ll learn to just chill the next time that happens. It comes with maturity too.

That’s not to say Norman shouldn’t be disciplined somehow; he did body-slam OBJ after all and most likely started it.

Finally, OBJ should simply admit “I was wrong, I’m sorry” publicly and this will all go away. We’ve all seen the media chase a story until the person in question admits they were wrong, and then it becomes yesterday’s news.

  39. rdk- a groin doesn’t hurt people, it humiliates them but doesn’t hurt them. Being that Beckham likes the men like that, he probably was in banana heaven. But the shot Norman took to the head deserved Beckhams face being smashed in to the turf by the entire team of Carolina.

  40. The Panthers are the punks
When the first blow was thrown with the bodyslam why did that not get a flag?

What that did was set the tone for the rest of the day.

The Panthers are no one they have won nothing and I think it was clear yesterday that they can be beaten

  41. @elmerbrownelmerbrown Do you mean they don’t know how to act during their current 18 game regular season winning streak. Bottom line, over the last 5 years, the Panthers have not changed their attitude, team focus, philosophy, or way they celebrate. The only reason it’s a problem now is b/c they are in the spotlight and beating teams that usually get the media’s attention. Now the fans and media are looking for anything and everything to criticize and break them. Just like Cam. The guy’s teammates, local fans, and community absolutely love him. He works hard off the field and does a ton in the community. We’re in a different era of football and he (and other players around the league) just like to have fun on the field. Haters will continue to hate, so who cares. We know we’re not a dirty team and if you have a problem with our guys celebrating and dancing, stop them.

Norman is crazy and has shown you he is crazy all year long.

Remember, Norman was the one who attached Cam Newton in pre-season practice and they had to be separated.

  52. Norman dropped his groin on Beckham and Beckham immediately went nuts on Norman on the next few plays including the helmet-to-helmet hit. Beckham also stepped over Norman on the td in 4th and thought about returning the favor, but held-up, unlike the disgusting Norman. Norman deserved getting hit after what he did.

  53. Ban all bats, increase bat regulation, get rid of straw bat purchases, and increase government spending on closing down black market bat sales. Let’s turn the thread over to CNN for breaking news regarding Obama’s plan for bat control.

  54. the guy pointing the bat at the giants running out is grade A garbage.

while odell lost his mind and should be punished, let’s not turn a blind eye to a loser pointing a bat at other players.

yes, pointing a bat at someone is threatening.

  55. LOL And here’s comes the media trying to justify why Odell try to end Norman’s career with a BLATANT temple shot that could have killed him. I don’t want to hear this BS. Odell was all smiles and dancing with Cam before the game, he couldn’t have been that threatened.

  60. So Norman is the new Cortland Finnegan. Big Deal.

Funny that he goes at a guy like Beckham. Not a very big guy.

So who’s going to be Andre Johnson? I want to see Norman show he’s got the balls to go after someone over 200 lbs. They both look like a steamy pile of little man syndrome out there.

Honestly after watching all that go down Sunday, I want to know why the NFL has refs watching these two fight and didn’t throw at least 1o more penalties at these two clowns. A few more penalties and Coughlin and Rivera take care of this in house.

That’s the real issue with all of this; the refs not throwing these two pukes out of the game. It’s how you maintain control and those refs were inept at doing there job. 1 warning and see you later for those two idiots.

When you’re playing as well as they are I personally believe you should handle yourself with some class. Otherwise you’re only gonna make yourself look like a jackass when you can’t get it done in the postseason which I doubt they can. 66. I have no dog in this fight but it seems to me that in a year where the NFL refs are not doing so hot, its mostly their fault for a lot of what went on this Sunday.

They should have thrown flags on the first body slam and then given notice that ejections would soon follow. The fact that they let so much go was like throwing gas on a fire. I am not saying OBJ was not responsible and I don’t think Norman is an angel but the refs let it spiral out of control.

  78. This is where you send in the 6th string guy for 1 play to take the other player out. Smh Giants. NEVER let your no. 1 player have to take on these battles like that.

  79. The Panther’s had heard that this was the game they were likely to lose. They got carried away swinging around bats, which you certainly can’t bring to the game, due to their association with violence. I disagree with you Florio. I think in this instance Carolina players did create some tension. They definitley appear full of themselves and seem to know no bounds for their ego’s. I don’t excuse Beckham. I just think the Panther’s have gone too far. Were this a more successful team, the uproar would be deafening. The Panther’s skate because of the lack of their past success, the small market they come from, and the fact there were 4 undefeated teams deep into the season. They have officially gone too far.

  80. ODB is kinda like Steven Smith. I think Smith may have been one to put up his fists rather than cheap shot with a helmet to helmet hit.

  81. The beginning of this article says “for weeks the Panthers have been carrying the bat onto the field”, yet this is the first time it turned violent, and the violent offense was committed by the team that WAS NOT carrying the bat onto the field. So the bat has zero to do with this. Sorry. Can’t blame the victim. Nice try though.

  82. Honestly, ODB is lucky he’s not getting worse heat over his dirty plays. He would be smart to quietly accept the suspension and just let this day fade away.

Paper Panthers will be one and done……

How are they even good on paper? Who’s their best pass catcher… Greg Olsen? Anyone who is not amazed by what Cam is doing with such little support offensively is dense. I don’t think most people can name more than one receiver on the panther’s roster.

  84. What ODB did deserved a suspension. But I find it amusing people lost their minds over a steelers player tweeting the word “paint” which could mean many things, yet said nothing of a bengals player using the word murder in a tweet, and today they say carrying a bat onto a football field, and walking towards the opposing team means nothing. So let me get this straight, the word paint is a reason for burfict to start a pregame fight, using the words “prepare for mass murder I want their GD necks” means nothing, and waving a bat in a threatening manner towards someone also means nothing? Ok, I think I follow the logic.

  85. I am a Giants fan and I firmly believe OBJ deserves everything he gets as far as fines and suspension. I don’t even agree with him appealing it. Trash talking and getting into your opponents heads is a part of every major sport out there. This is how Reggie Miller got into the Knicks heads. And majority of Knicks/Pacers games during the 90s were heated and some even involved fights.

It was quite obvious that OBJ hasn’t come across an opponent like Norman as his actions showed. No excuses, his willful intent to cause harm deserves every punishment the NFL can levy on him.

If OBJ was a seasoned player who knew exactly how to handle this part of the game, it, of course, would have turned out differently.

Players, and teams, for that matter, will do everything they can to get some kind of advantage on and off the field, whether it may be a motivational “bat” or a professional trash talker.

OBJ should have watched game films of other wideouts who have played against Norman to see how they handled themselves. As it stands, not only does he look like a spoiled prima donna, he also looks like a fool.

  86. “Cornerback Bené Benwikere also has posted a photo of himself carrying the bat out of the tunnel last Sunday, prior to the game against the Falcons.”

After looking at his original tweet….he should have been carrying a grammar book.

  87. There is a video that clearly shows a Panthers player tapping a baseball bat into the palm of his hand while staring down giant’s player as they run onto the field past Eli. Anybody who doesn’t think a threat like that doesn’t need retaliation didn’t grow up in the same neighborhoods as most of these guys.

Ron Rivera is a total bone head for losing control of his team like that! If his guys keen threatening other teams with street violence then what’s the over/under for when the firs gang style brawl happens on an NFL field?

  88. Can you imagine the blowback had the Giants won the game? That would have been a whole different story from multiple perspectives.
Blandino would probably have reversed the results of the game because the refs ignored his encouragement to throw OBJ out of the game. Goodell would have fined the Giants their first draft pick and Tom Coughlin $1,000,000 for not benching OBJ. Goodell would also have fined JJ Watt for doing that ad about chopping down trees in the forest. After all it must have had something to do with bringing on the wood. He also probably would have fined Louisville Slugger for making the bat.
