Zimmer tells Vikings: They can’t ever call you a loser again

Getty Images

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told his players on Sunday that after winning their ninth game of the season, they’re winners.

The 9-5 Vikings clinched a winning record after having losing records the last two years, and Zimmer told them to take pride in that.

“We’re not done yet, we’ve still got a long way to go,” Zimmer said. “If we play like we did today and last Thursday, if we play that way, with that focus, that intensity, preparation, toughness, we’re going to do a lot of damage. We get in this thing, there’s going to be a lot. Let’s go win this division. Everybody gets a game ball because they can’t ever call you a loser again. They can never call you that. Because we’re winners from now on.”

Zimmer is echoing comments that his former boss, Bill Parcells, made in 2003 when the Cowboys clinched at least a .500 record that season. No one wants to be a loser, and the Vikings are not.

  1. As a Bears fan I thought Zimmer and Fox were pretty equal as coaches but Zimmer has thoroughly outcoached Fox in both of their meetings. Yes, the Vikings have a better roster but with their top 3 defensive studs in civvies they still dominated the Bears and played with focus and effort completely lacking on the Chicago side. I hope Vikings fans realize what they have in him because there are very few of his caliber in the league right now.

  2. Impressive win. Let’s not forget that the Bears beat good teams this year — Packers, Chiefs — and played the Broncos to a 2-point loss.

    They will be an even better team with Barr, Smith, and Joseph back. No need to rush it. I’d rather be winning in January than in late December.

  3. These coaches just never get it. Everything is a soundbite…or an artificial plea to the owner (through the media) to say “look at me winning games!” The Vikings have done NOTHING…every year the odds say a few teams (even mediocre ones) will slip through the cracks and win some games and even make the playoffs…it means nothing and for Zimmer to already be declaring victory is a joke.

    This time next year Zimmer will be looking for work.

  4. I’m a Packer fan but with a brother and brother-in-law who are Vikings fans, so we have a lot of fun, particularly for me since, well, that doesn’t really need an explanation. But one thing we agree on is that the Vikings found the right coach with Zimmer. That was a really good hire for them.

  5. As a long-time Viking fan, Zimmer is easily the best head coach this team has had in decades. It’s nice not to have to put up with a head coach that’s either too easy-going (Frazier, Tice) or whose ego has gotten the best of him to the point where it clouds his judgment (Childress, Green).

    If the Vikings are going to go anywhere in the playoffs, they need to get their best defenders healthy and back on the field. Yesterday’s win was the first time since week 3 that this team really put the pedal to the floor and didn’t let up on their opponent during the game. If this is a sign of the offense starting to peak at the right time, good things are ahead in January.

  6. You know what I find really strange? Why is there this unnatural hate for the Vikings on this site? I mean–some of the things you guys say up there make no sense to me. This was simply a comment that they are now NOT a losing team because they are over .500 That’s it. He isnt saying they are now the premier team of the league or anything. And as for the rest of his comments–I agree. If they play like they did the past two weeks against other opponents they face in the playoffs then they CAN do some damage. Maybe even win a few games. SKOL Vikings!

  7. 9 wins. Gotta give credit where credit is due. That’s an extraordinary achievement for a team with 6-win talent and 4-win coaching at best.

  8. Zimmer is a great coach. It looks like he figured out the only way for the Vikings to get the only thing better than a bye week in a playoffs… Two tune up games in a row against the lowly Packers.

  9. They won’t win the NFC North this year OR next year, and they certainly won’t win a playoff game either, especially if they play the Packers. Never hurts to dream though.

  10. The Vikings are good. No other way to slice it. But as of today, they are not better than the Packers. That may change, but it won’t change today.

  11. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told his players on Sunday that after winning their ninth game of the season, they’re winners.

    He went on to say “Now we can lay down as we normally do to finish the rest of the season and go nowhere as we are accustomed”.

  12. They will be losers on January 3rd. Book it yourself and make some money. Zimmer is a good coach, the best they’ve had probably since Grant. They’re still the Vikings and we know what that portends for them ultimately.

  13. I’d rather be winning in January than in late December.
    ————
    If history is any guide, then you probably would rather switch your allegiance to a team other than the Vikings.

    They’ve won a total of 3 games in January over the last 15 years.

  16. Nothing like throwing up an alley oop slam for all the trolls out there. I think what he should have said was we are one game closer to our goal, but we are putting our focus on the Giants.

  17. Wow! Queen Coach might be the biggest Fan Boy of Queen Nation. One win and suddenly the Minnesota Mediocres are a dynasty??? Now that’s funny!!!!!!!

  18. First, congratulations to the Vikings and their fans for making the playoffs. Its a special feeling every time it happens whether is your first time in a long time (Vikings) or the 7th time in a row (Packers).

    As for the “loser” comments, it depends on where you set the bar. Granted, the Vikings will finish above .500 and play a meaningful game in January but to me, that loser comment just shows that Zimmer listens to talk radio or reads the newspapers too much.

  19. “They only call my Vikes losers after the refs make horrible calls against us. That’s how we lose most games. The refs.”

    Lolz blaming the refs, the last refuge of fans of loser franchises.

    Wow they actually have more wins than losses for one whole season woohoo !!!!!

    Zimmer just went a little crazy after their Christmas miracle win against that juggernaut Bears team.
    ———
    Packer fans shouldn’t be ripping the Vikings for destroying a team that they lost to at Lambeau on a night when they were honoring a retired Viking.

  21. Even Packers fans admit to loving Zimmer and wished he’d be their coach. Packers fans are dreaming of him being their next coach, ain’t happening.

  22. After having a rough few years, the hint of stink may have infested some of the older players thinking and I think Zimmer was addressing that. Fortunately, the Vikings young, key players have only known Zimmer and they’ve seen the results when they do what he wants them to do.

    With the Lions and now the Raiders gift wrapping the Packers 2 wins, how do you sconnies have the nerve to talk smack? You’re an 8 win team with an aging QB, slow WR’s and a crappy town/state to play in. The last few years you’ve had the luxury to take shots at a rebuilding Vikings team to make yourselves and your lives seem better, but those days are over, TD Bridgewater has arrived. You’ll have to troll the lions or bears sites to get your psychologically necessitated esteem boost.

  23. Mike Zimmer has done a fabulous job. They are winning on the road, winning the games they are supposed to win, not playing down to the level of inferior opponents, overcoming adversity (e.g., injuries), playing with intensity, etc.–all marked changes from recent history. I believe they will get even better, too, with a better offensive line and by filling far fewer holes than were there just three years ago. I am proud to be a fan of this team.

    Packer fans, since you remind us constantly about your history, you might want to think back to the 20 years of futility your franchise suffered from the 70s to the early 90s. Had your team then had a season like the Vikings are this season, you would have been ecstatic and looked for brighter times to come–as we are.

  24. Even Packers fans admit to loving Zimmer and wished he’d be their coach. Packers fans are dreaming of him being their next coach, ain’t happening. Not the hapless tasteless Pack ten.

    You are making a huge mistake to believe that discussion on this board is rational. Witness the rhetorical spitballs hurled today about how beating the 5-8 Bears is not an achievement, when the Packers lost to them at home just 3 weeks ago.

  26. Wow, high standards they set there in Minnesota. Hopefully the contractors working on that monstrosity of a stadium don’t have the same standards.

    “Hey guys, our goal here is to not have the roof cave in when it snows. If we can dig deep and accomplish that, they can never take that away from us.”

  27. You are right Zim! You have done a great job with this young team and winning 9 games in this league is not an easy task.

    Its flattering that packer trolls fill up these comments. Keep em coming! We all know what happens next when fans get arrogant. The game at Lambeau is going to be fun!

  28. How did the Packers do against division rivals? Yeah – that’s right. You can’t beat Detroit or Chicago – let that soak in.
    —————
    Last I checked they did beat Detroit AND Chicago. Minnesota too.

  29. When your coach has to give a motivational speech to convince your team that they aren’t losers, they are losers.

  30. Love Zimmer, and it’s pretty clear that quote was singled out of about 50 so that cheesers with their limited creativity and intellect would have an easy quip to create page hits, but until the Vikes have success in the playoffs, I’m perfectly fine with minimizing the don’t call us loser cracks.

  31. I have to say, for any team to finally get past .500, it is noteworthy within the organization and their fanbase. Zimmer is a good coach. Turner is finally calling good games. Despite the hurdles, this team plays hard and has had success. With three games to play, it is not over.

    Sure the goal is to win out and win the division as it would be for any team in the same position as Minnesota. The ridiculous cat calls are just that. Sad, but nonetheless expected unfortunately.

  32. I think Vikings fans are tired of being called losers by the Packer fans, just as Packer fans are tired of the abuse given out by Vikings fans.

    I would like to propose in this holiday season that we all come together in a sign of unity and solidarity in what we do have in common—our hatred of Roger Goodell.

  33. but until the Vikes have success in the playoffs, I’m perfectly fine with minimizing the don’t call us loser cracks.
    ————
    How about “until the Vikes win a SUPER BOWL?!?!?!”

    The bar is set pretty low in purple-land. And to think there are a lot of Vikings trolls talking about the Packers losing in the playoffs after winning a game to get to the NFCCG as chokers. smh

  34. If the team are not losers (history indicates different), a lot of their fans certainly are. The most memorable taunt directed my way in the Metrodome was “HEY BUDDY, TAMPA’S WEST!!!” I tried to give him a geography lesson, but he didn’t want to hear it…

  35. The comments should be a fun read. After all, Packer fans are all unemployed and have lots of time to post.

  37. Frankly what I’m really worried about is the Giants right now.
    They have been playing lights out, and SHOULD have beaten the Panthers yesterday.

    Unless the Vikes can get a LOT of pressure on Eli, he may really eat them up and then they could actually end up losing out and going 9-7.

    Still not sure WHY they haven’t clinched though. Who could catch them for the final wild card?

    Atlanta is closest and they beat them head-up..

    And people who don’t punch in on a time clock for their job even have access to a computer and the interweb from work. Without having to wash the grease from their hands and go to lunch.

  39. I’d like to point out that everyone making snide comments above predicted last week that the Vikings would lose their last three games.

  41. “Still not sure WHY they haven’t clinched though. Who could catch them for the final wild card?

    Atlanta is closest and they beat them head-up..”

    If ATL wins out, SEA loses out, and MIN loses out… it becomes a 3 way tie. Unfortunately for the Vikings a three way tie favors SEA and ATL. In a three way tie, head to head isn’t a factor unless other tiebreakers are tied which they won’t be in this situation.

    I know it’s stupid and convoluted but what in the NFL isn’t.

    _________

    If Seattle, Minnesota, and Atlanta, all finish 9-7, the three-way tiebreaker would be best conference record. Apparently, the Vikings would have a worse conference record than the other two. I’m not going to lose too much sleep worrying about that eventuality.

  43. Clearly, the funniest things that come from these comments are the packer trolls. For them to actually use their precious time away from their regular duties of massaging their mom’s feet and taking out the garbage to comment on a small article that has nothing to do with their team is such a transparent attempt to make themselves feel more important than they really are. They all know in the back of their tiny minds that their time is coming to an end and they are trying to get in as much trolling while they can. They know what every one else can see, but they don’t want to admit, that AR is losing his ability as he gets older and soon will be a “Manning”, trying desperately to stay in the league and stay relevant. Good luck with that! Nothing can stop father time and your time is coming to an end!

    If MN and Sea lose out, and ATL wins out, MN loses a 3-way tie for the WC based on complicated tiebreaker rules. Not going to happen.

    Looks like Minny has unofficially backed into the playoffs.

  45. They may not be better than the Packers today, but they sure were better than the Packers yesterday. Not sure what happened overnight.
    ———
    I must have missed something. Did the Packers and Vikings play yesterday?

  46. 2ruefan: I think it’s because if Atlanta wins out (highly unlikely as they play the panthers sunday), the Seahawks lose out (unlikely as they play the rams in Seattle sunday), it would create a 3-way tie at 9-7. I’m still not sure how the Vikes lose out in that situation, but there must be some combination of miraculous circumstances that would cause them not to get in.

  47. Vikings fans desperately want to run away from the facts. And ignore the beating they took at home by the Packers.

    The facts are:
    1. The Packers have a better record than the Vikings.
    2. The Packers beat the Vikings at home by 3 scores.

    Everything else spewed by Vikings fans is just nonsense and a reality distraction technique.

  48. They can’t ever call you a loser again… unless you’re born in Wisconsin, then its just natural. It has nothing to do with sports.

  49. Huge Viking fan here.
    I love my Vikings and there pretty uniforms but I would take McCarthy over Zimmer in a heart beat. Zimmer can’t beat the best team in the division. Heck, Zimmer can’t beat a team with a winning record.

  50. AR is losing his ability as he gets older
    ———
    Yeah. A lot of QB’s go in the tank when they hit 32. SKOLOLOLOL He’s not quite old enough for the Vikings to beg him to come play for Minnie to salvage a chance at losing the NFCCG.

Got some bad news for you, Aaron Rodgers has more left in him today than AP did 5 years ago. While I’ll admit the Vikings are improved and may get a little better, they will never catch the Packers as long as Aaron is QB. As the Vikings fill one hole, another will appear, the NFL version of whac-a-mole. Deal with it.

    The Vikings are good. No other way to slice it. But as of today, they are not better than the Packers. That may change, but it won’t change today.
    _______

    They may not be better than the Packers today, but they sure were better than the Packers yesterday. Not sure what happened overnight.

    I think you’re not sure that yesterday the Packers were in Oakland and the Vikings in Minneapolis. While the Miniscules beat a hung dog team with zero hopes of a playoff berth, the Pack beat a scrappy Raiders team trying to stay alive. In what skewed universe of your mind does that even remotely make the Vikings better?

  80. Pretty obvious the GB Choker fans are nervous based on all their Troll comments.

    They know the have an aging team that is headed down this year, and in the future…

    The alcohol induced fear that controls the GB choker fan base is real, and I almost feel sorry for their pathetic classless bunch..

    Almost.

    The future of the NFC north is here.

    The Minnesota Vikings.

    Cabbageforbrains tell me again how little you care about the Vikings by posting 8 times on a Vikings thread. You’re the worst because you actually think somebody reads your post and cares what you say. PFT ain’t gonna bring you on board son, stop embarrassing yourself and the rest of your fan base.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ragnarthemangina,
    I never said I don’t care about the Vikings. I said they are not our rival and never will be. The Bears are our one and only rival. Always have been and always will be. That will never change.
    We don’t care any more or any less about the Vikings than we do the Lions. They’re in our division so we care about them but they will never be our rivals. We do enjoy YOUR pain, and the pain of the others like you that keep running your little fingers with NO wit, NO humor, and NO appreciable intelligence.
    All you bring to this or any other conversation are juvenile insults and name calling. You’re much like a bratty toddler, clamoring for attention. You’d rather have negative attention than no attention.
    Now run along, I’m trying to talk with the grownups.
    The same can be said for Vikings fans pretending to be Packer fans. It’s just weak. And it certainly isn’t amusing or funny.
    And, I’ll go one step further. Let’s call the Packers the Packers, Rodgers Rodgers, Bridgewater Bridgewater. This childish name calling isn’t even worthy of 12 year olds.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Yes, exactly! Also, I’m quite sure the only way to get the Viking fans that do this nonsense to stop it is if they’re asked to by other Viking fans.

    Just like I’m pretty sure the only way to get the Packer fans that do this nonsense to stop it is if they’re asked to by other Packer fans.

    The trolls are winning. Every day, there are less and less people on these boards that want to be able to talk about football in a sane and reasonable manner. That doesn’t mean we all have to agree, or that there isn’t room for the occasional battle of wits. I enjoy battles of wits. A lot.

    I don’t enjoy being subjected to 5th grade arguing like “Your team sux!” “Does Not! Yours does!” “Does not!” “Does too!” If we want it to stop, we have to try and police ourselves. The site owners don’t care either way. As long as they get their page views and their retention time they get paid.

  84. okay, fine.

    sports championships (all teams in state)
    NCAA Football: 7 1
    NFL 1 13
    NCAA B-Ball: 0 2
    NBA 5 1
    NCAA Hockey: 6 6
    NHL 0 0
    Baseball 2 1
    WNBA 3 0
    MISL 0 2
    etc etc

    If you want to argue against the Vikings 1969 NFL championship, the Badgers 1936 NCAA title is on similarly shaky ground, they were named NCAA champs by the Helms Foundation while most other press sources named Georgia that year.

    FWIW before 1961, most people in minnesota probably followed the Packers as the closest NFL team. Merry Christmas.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I don’t readily recognize your username so I’m guessing maybe you haven’t been here real long? You are indeed correct that the Vikings and their fans don’t get much respect around here, if any. If you’d really like to know why, just check out a few other stories with the following in mind and then draw your own conclusions:
    Packer fans and Bear fans will talk a little smack between ourselves, especially during game week but there’s almost always an undercurrent of respect that goes both ways.
    Packer fans and Lion fans will talk a little smack between ourselves, especially during game week but there’s almost always an undercurrent of respect that goes both ways.
    Bear fans and Lion fans will talk a little smack between ourselves, especially during game week but there’s almost always an undercurrent of respect that goes both ways.
    There is little to no respect between Packer fans and Viking fans.
    There is little to no respect between Bear fans and Viking fans.
    There is little to no respect between Lion fans and Viking fans.
    There is little to no respect between Viking fans and any other team’s fans.
    Do you see a pattern here? A common denominator, if you will?
    And again, I encourage you to not take my word for it. Heck, I could be making it all up. Check it out for yourself. Everything is archived here, you’ll just have to go find it. And it isn’t ALL Viking fans by any means. It’s a select few that make the entire website miserable for everyone. Unfortunately, those that make things miserable have managed to chase away most of the sane Viking fans that used to post here.
  86. Yeah, that’s how Tom Cable got fired by Al Davis. They went 8-8 and he made a big deal at the press conference about not being a losing team anymore. Al’s response was that 8-8 wasn’t a winning team either and replaced him with Hue Jackson.
  87. Good speech. He’s tryin to motivate and be positive. That’s what leaders do to build a winning team.
    As far as loser, you mean like someone who posts 5 times on a team he supposedly hates? And does that repeatedly on multiple threads yearly? There are many trolls that do this. Pathetic would be a good word to define them.
    Yes, I know “so and so did it first” but that’s no excuse. What are you, 12? And are “they” what you wish to aspire to anyways? It was weak nonsense on the part of whomever started it and it’s even weaker that some of you have jumped on that bandwagon of fail.
    Please, just go change your usernames. Please.
    ——————————–
    100% with you cabbage. I basically posted the exact same message yesterday. What was really embarrassing was the several casual PFT Packer fans without a sense of satire that couldn’t discern the insincere commenters from the real ones. However, some of the real Viking trolls posts can be so ridiculous, I’d swear they were impostors.
    And that scrappy Raiders team was trying to stay alive for what? They had no real chance of making the playoffs. The point is, the Packers didn’t play well against a bad team again.
  91. You can read a typical nonsense packer response over and over here and other sites. Like the packer fans pointing out that it was the 5-8 Bears the Vikings just beat. Even though the packers lost to the Bears this year. SMH
    That isn’t helping. There’s no reason to lump all Viking fans in with the purple crazies and/or insult them all. Please don’t.
    Jebus knows, I’ve been guilty of getting sucked into their nonsense far too many times, but even then, I try not to insult the sane Viking fans.
    Go check out the Quarless thread. It’s hilarious as well as very enlightening. The crazies are having a complete meltdown in their. Each of their comments is crazier than the last, simply because they’re not getting the negative attention they so desperately crave.
    It’s like they’re stomping their little feet with their little arms folded across their little chests, as they incessantly whine:
    “Look at me! Pay attention to meee! What about meeee!”
    3rd down & long and desperation against the packers : 1 (Leads the league)
    After 15 weeks
    Total 3rd down in the packers favor : 17 (Leads the league)
    3rd down & long and desperation in the packers favor : 12 & 5 of those are desperation (Leads the league)
    And this is with rookie corners playing. And WR’s that can’t get separation.
  95. Then how did the Mighty Packers lose to the lowly Lions then take a Miracle Hail Mary to win the 2nd game, then lose those other games?
    I love how you Packer turds BAILED on them in November and now they walk on Water!
    If Minnesota beats the Giants, they WILL beat the Packers too.
    This is a very young Minnesota team, on the upswing, facing a Packers team with a rust hole in their Armor.
