Coughlin: “Not fair” to depict Odell Beckham as only one at fault

Getty Images

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that he thought wide receiver Odell Beckham and Panthers cornerback Josh Norman should get the same punishment from the league based on what they did on the field during last Sunday’s 38-35 Panthers victory.

The NFL didn’t see it that way. Beckham has been suspended for one game and will have an appeal hearing on Wednesday with James Thrash in hopes of having it overturned while Norman has reportedly been fined in excess of $26,000. During his Wednesday press conference, Coughlin continued on a similar line while saying that he feels Beckham has been singled out for his actions.

“It’s not fair, it’s not justice, it’s not the way it was,” Coughlin said. “If you’re naive enough to think that way, you better do some soul searching yourself. Beckham certainly was wrong and we said he was wrong from day one. But there were factors involved starting in pregame, which are well documented, which indicate there was an attempt to provoke him. He was provoked, he was out of control, he was wrong, no doubt about that but … there are two sides to this not just one.”

As mentioned, Norman was fined and there could be other fines coming for the Panthers. Those penalties are not as stiff as a suspension, but they are penalties and different actions have always had different consequences.

Coughlin brought up the now retired baseball bat that the Panthers toted around the field before the game and said the team has spoken to the league about their issues with Carolina’s behavior. While Coughlin was forceful in his comments and all of that may explain why Beckham became unhinged during the game, even the coach doesn’t excuse Beckham’s behavior and it winds up being a stronger argument for stiffer penalties for the Panthers than a more lenient slap on the wrist for the Giants wideout.

  1. “If you’re naive enough to think that way, you better do some soul searching yourself. ”

This from the guy who somehow thought we were all naive enough to believe he wasn’t aware of the penalties/behavior by OBJ until after the game. LOL

  2. Can’t have it both ways, Tom. Either he’s at fault or he’s not. All sorts of stuff happen pregame and during the game every week and guys don’t melt down like Beckham did.

  3. nothing in life is fair! a fair is where you get cotton candy, funnel cakes, ride rides and play games!

its not fair hes making millions playing a game and im making thousands here in my office

  4. Coughlin’s right.

If he showed enough leadership to bench his unhinged player for even a series or two, it probably wouldn’t have escalated to the point of idiocy.

Ol’ coach can wear some fault, too.

  5. I am neither a Giants nor Panthers fan, but it is too simplistic to say that this is all on Beckham. The Panthers had a strategy of getting under his skin and they used some pretty slimy methods in doing that. I don’t know enough of the facts here, but I would think Norman, at the very least, earned himself a fine. If this were last year, we’d probably get more involvement from Goodell and a Wells Report, but Goodell now knows a little better when to shut up and we hopefully won’t see another freaking Wells Report for quite some time.

  6. It shouldn’t matter to Coughlin that Josh Norman is a punk. That’s no newsflash. Norman doesn’t play on his team, though. Beckham does, and is Coughlin’s responsibility. You let a guy you’re supposed to be in charge of get punked and taunted into hurting your team. That’s all on Coughlin.

If Jennings had lost multiple fumbles you bet Coughlin would have been aware and sat him down. But Beckham costs his team dozens and dozens of yards in penalties and you try to say you’re not aware? Or that it was the punk Norman’s fault? Come on. We’re not idiots.

  7. I did my soul searching as per his suggestion, I arrived at the conclusion that the NFL ref’s are having a terrible 2015 season and this is just the cherry on top in terms of professional incompetence. Ya, both OBJ and Norman are punks but that is hardly new information.

  8. Just amazing the Coughlin would suggest there is any excuse for an out of control and undisciplined player on his football team. Three major penalties and a blow to the head of an opposing player are never justified by a team that wants to win more than engage in reindeer games. This is just excuse-making. Thought better of Coughlin. Time to retire.

  9. Of course OBJ was provoked. That’s never been the issue. The issue is, is it reasonable to respond as he did? Unless you have some evidence that is more than some stupid bat stunt and unoriginal trash talk, the answer is no.

No one is giving Norman a pass, but he also didn’t do anything that bad either. He’s not the first guy to make trash talk personal and he won’t be the last.

  10. I’ll bet Coughlin and the Giants management loves this, otherwise the focus would be on how they fell behind by 4 TDs in three quarters, their poor clock management, and more importantly, the total lack of any kind of talent on the vast majority of their roster (Beckham and Manning excluded).

  11. C’mon Tom

The reason he got suspended was for the 20 yard running head start earhole shot he delivered but I get it

    Blame the victim.

  12. Give me a break. Nobody is saying that Josh didn’t do something wrong too, but Beckham was the initiator almost every single time. And he actually tried to hurt somebody. That diving shot to the head could have put Josh out for the year. Most of the game Beckham wasn’t even running his routes, he was just taking shots at Josh.

I’m no fan of either team, but Josh was the one reacting to Beckham, not the other way around. And to try to base his actions on a bat that is used as motivation by the team but could never be used on a player anyways is the naive part.

This is why Beckham won’t grow up. He gets given the way out for his actions by people that don’t make him own up to them.

  13. Well Tom Coughlin should certainly include himself on that list of people who were at fault. If it was Rueben Randle or any of his other mediocre receivers, they would have been benched. He watched it unfold all game long and did nothing. Like I said, good luck with that next game without your star receiver. Can’t wait to see what Eli does with what’s left.

  14. This would hardly be the worst example of getting under someone’s skin. Players from all sports have researched their opponents’ personal lives. Having marital problems? Expect that to be brought up.

Is it slimy? Perhaps, but it’s also part of the game. It can backfire and motivate the recipient. If you aren’t ready to deal with that, it’s your fault.

  15. As far as Im concerned they were both equally at fault until the helmet to helmet hit (which is Im guessing what caused Beckham to be suspended)

Listening on the radio they mentioned both sidelines were warned by the refs early in the first quarter. From that point on, they should have been given a couple strikes and then thats it….eject one or both. The helmet to helmet should never have occurred because at least one of them should have been tossed from the game by that point.

EVERYONE involved is at fault….players, coaches AND refs.

  16. Tom just bring some bats too this week’s game have a couple guys in street clothes swinging and pointing them at Adien Peterson calling him a bunch of names and maybe AP will get kicked , sounds fair to me

  17. Hey Tom – it’s not fair to your fans to underachieve yet again in what is one of the weakest divisions in recent memory. Stop whining about the Panthers and worry about winning your sorry division.

  18. Most fans have said Norman deserves some blame as well but Beckham was clearly out of control. Even the announcers said “he’s not even running routes anymore”. For Beckham, the snap turned into the boxing bell signaling the start of another round. He was going straight after Norman as soon as the ball was snapped. He deserved a suspension and Norman earned a fine or two.

That game was unprofessional on many levels. The HC should have handled it when the officials did not do their job. He failed too and deserves some blame as well so he might want to step away from the podium before the media finally calls him out. The referees are paid to enforce the rules and make judgment calls. This crew failed miserably and should be held accountable. The league has failed as well. If safety is as important as they claim then BS like this, Pacman’s head slam, Suh’s stomp, Talib’s eye gouge, etc. Should be immediate ejections. When they aren’t, the officials should be disciplined and the league should step in. I don’t like the league micromanaging the games but cases like this deserve intervention or their safety stance is no more than a PR campaign.

  19. lol newsflash panthers apologists: every bs comment you make can be turned right back onto your team. Why didnt Rivera pull Norman aside and tell him to knock it off? Why didnt he say anything to his player who approached Beckham pregame? Why did he let them intentionally antagonize him instead of acting like pros? Also noteworthy: it seems the Panthers conceded pregame that they felt they had to antagonize Beckham to give them a chance to win.
FYI, im a Cards fan…i could care less about either team. That is just my perspective as an outsider.

  20. True Tom, you and your staff are just as much at fault for allowing his out of control behavior. You hurt the team, and permanently allowed this young man to make decisions that could forever effect his reputation.

Too bad because he is a unique talent!

  21. What’s not fair is spearing someone with a helmet where you can end a person’s career and maybe even injure that person for life. You people make all the excuses you want. Good is good, bad is bad, right is right and wrong is wrong-but crazy is still crazy……………………..

  22. Nowhere in his statement does he say OBJ didn’t deserve his punishment so about half the respondents in this thread didn’t even read it.

The fact is Norman and Co. had a plan to get OBJ worked up. They worked him the whole game and he responded just as they had hoped. The NFL put taunting rules in places two years ago to avoid this but the refs wouldn’t call it either way until it got completely out of hand.

Lots of people to blame here, but as pointed out it was OBJ that did the most serious deeds and he deserves his punishment.

Now that Norman has been effective with this tactic with little to no punishment you can bet he will continue it. I guess that is what the NFL wants.

  23. He was provoked, he was out of control, he was wrong, no doubt about that but …

If you saw that, then why didn’t you sit him down?

  24. If Norman intentionally took a cheap shot where he dove helmet to helmet into another player from the blindside with an intention of hurting another player then yes he should receive the same punishment.

It seems to me watching the tape though Odell was the player who became unhinged and who posed a danger so as a result he was rightly so suspended.

  25. He shouldn’t be suspended for self-preservation. That shot to Norman came as a result of 2 years worth of cheap shots. Can only walk back to the huddle so many times before you end up on IR yourself.

    #freebeckham

  26. Lol Giants fans will cling to any flimsy excuse to justify this kids behavior. You can kind of tell that they don’t even believe what they’re saying. Just gotta defend it, no matter how stupid they sound.

  27. You spear someone in the side of the head after a run up – I don’t care if you started it or just retaliated to it – you get suspended.

There’s no place in the game for such idiocy.

  28. Whatever. Bottom line is that this is a blessing in disguise for the Giants who now will likely have no shot vs minny without OBJ and be officially eliminated from the postseason. The last thing I want to see as a Giants fan this year is for the Giants to win a bogus NFC least title, get smacked around in the first round, have a lousy draft pick, and have TC come back as coach.

OBJ getting suspended and virtually assuring the Giants of not making the playoffs for the 4th year in a row was probably the best thing that could have happened to this team; OBJ gets a wake up call and hopefully wisens up AND the TC reign comes to an end.

Nah. If anything, he’s been the one handing put cheap shots for two years. We’ve all heard the whispers from other players around the league. Beckham instigated what happened on Sunday. There was a point on Sunday where Norman tried to cool things down and just get back to football but Beckham wouldn’t quit. He then capped the whole thing off with that dirt bag move by spearing him in the earhole. He’s lucky to he only got one game.

  30. This is very, very simple. Beckham circled around and targeted Norman with a vicious helmet to helmet blind sided shot. It doesn’t matter who said what, or how many times they smacked each other during the game. Beckham was suspended for that shot, and it should have been more than one game to send a clear message. And Coughlin clearly needs to hang it up.

  31. Too funny, Tom. Josh Norman took two personal fouls for striking back Odell and was fined $26,000. You better think about getting your man to settle down during his off week.

  32. @richiethegreek: please dont lump “Giants fans” together. Im a huge Giants fan and I make no exuses for Odell…..I was disgusted when I saw him hit Norman (I saw it in real time then I saw the replay) helmet to helmet.

He deserved a penalty and ejection long before that but that should have been the absolute last straw….its just that there were players around the area shielding the refs from noticing it (IMHO).

What I find interesting is that last year, when the Rams went after Odell (out of bounds and then pushed his head into the ground WELL out of bounds), he just walked away. Held his composure quite well that time…..I think this season of everyone targeting him just led him to snap which is unprofessional and dangerous.

  33. I’m beginning to think that there’s nothing wrong with Beckham that couldn’t be cured with a strong head coach. Coughlin is embarassing himself and his team. ‘I considered taking Beckham out of the game; but, I wanted to win and besides I didn’t know who it was who kept getting the flags’–unbelievable. Could you imagine Beckham getting away with tantrums like he displayed in Sunday’s game if his coach was Belichick, Parcells or Lombardi? I mean, say what you will about Belichick, no player is above the team with him. The Pats don’t give bulletin board material to any other team….and boy is there bulletin board material for other teams to put up about the Giants and Beckham at this point! Getting Beckham to calm down and make his point by putting up points would be something that will help the kid for the rest of his life, not just on the football field.

    You can’t possibly believe this.

As for Coughlin, this incident, his failure to manage it and then this bizarre take on the situation is a career ender.

  35. Beckham deserved the suspension; Norman deserved the fines.

It’s well known that Beckham is an anger-management issue waiting to happen….he even said so himself when asked in an interview how he would defend against himself if he was on another team…..he answered “I’d make me angry”.

I’m glad that the Panthers haven’t been doing any complaining…..they, in effect, gave a box of matches and a can of gas to an arsonist….can’t be surprised if he tried to burn your house down!!!

  36. richie – go youtube the Rams game last year and then tell me Beckham has been the instigator.

Beckham doesn’t need to instigate. Save for a game here and there where Eli hasn’t had time to throw due to his porous line (I’m sure you saw the Eagles game), Beckham is essentially un-coverable. The way to stop him is to taunt him and take cheap shots. Why not when he’s gonna catch a 15 yd pass on you anyway? There’s no downside.

Norman was gonna be in for a loooong game. After he was torched on the second play, the writing was on the wall. So, he did what CBs have been doing against OB for much of his career, drop him after the whistle, get up under his facemask, drive his pinned shoulder first into the turf, high shoulders….all after the whistle.

The suspension will likely be upheld. But, in the long run it will be best for OB. Refs will be protecting him like they do Brady and flags will be a-flyin’ if anyone so much as breathes on him.

Just do us a favor and beat Washington this weekend.

  37. No one said he’s the only one at fault, the NFL is fining Josh so they see his faults. The problem is OBJ took it MUCH further!!! And Coach your an idiot, you claimed u didnt know the 3 personal fouls were on him until after the game……….im sure no one mentioned it to you and you didnt hear it when the officials announced it each time. You showed your true colors when you said “we thought about pulling him, but we kept him in b/c we wanted to win”. So you allowed him to try to end someones career b/c he is good and could have helped you win….. classy.

Every team has a plan to take out the other teams biggest threat. It’s done by game planning and/or getting in the guys head…..trash talk is as old as sports themselves. And, it’s not just Norman who will continue with this plan of attack on Beckham, through his own immature, dangerous and reckless tantrums—every team knows how to take him out of a game now. All Beckham and Couglin have accomplished in this debacle is a sure loss to Minnesota this week and a target painted on Beckham’s back.

  39. Nope, definitely not the same punishment. Beckham was far worse (I’m a life long Giants fan). However Norman definitely deserves the fines he got. He body slammed Beckham in the first quarter to start all this crap. Beckham carried it waaaaay too far, but Norman is far from the saint people act like he is.

That being said, I’m a Norman fan. I want them to go 19-0 solely to annoy Rodney Harrison.

  40. Provoked? Really? That’s something a 5 year old says. Little Timmy made me do it. But but but, they were picking on me.

While, unfortunately, the NFL and its hoodlums give off the idea that you can do something wrong and just blame it on anyone/anything you want, this tends to teach people, kids included, that this is the way things are. I, and any other decent parent, thank them for their glaring examples of how not to live a life. It’s kind of messed up that I have to teach my children to do the complete opposite of about everything I see in the world today, of course, sports included.

  41. Don’t forget to penalize the officiating crew. Beckham should have never been allowed to play that full game. And shame on Coughlin and Manning for doing nothing during the game.

  42. Tom should really just shut his pie hole. I’m a Panthers fan and felt that Josh should have been punished for his role on Sunday. However, the excuses that have been coming out from the Giants camp are asinine. Beckham is scared of a little bat? If it bothered you so, why not notify game officials? Players trash talk. We may not like or condone but it is what it is. Dude let his opponents get the best of him, he came undone and now he’s trying to do damage control. In spite of all the reasoning coming from NY, there is NO justification of Beckham’s actions. He needs to man-up and accept his suspension. Is he the new generation of T.O.?

  43. All you OBJ haters were starting to make me nauseous. Because you forgot that Norman instigated this whole thing and got away with teabagging someone on national TV. Not saying OBJ is innocent, because he’s not… he was wrong with what he did, period, end of story. However there are two sides to every argument and everyone has forgotten that Norman had a hand in this whole fiasco too.

  44. I love all the Coughlin-hating.

This is a coach that has squeezed more wins out of a team with less talent than the Factory of Sadness Browns. They have hung to within one possession in 6 games this season. Give Coughlin talented players, and he takes them to the Super Bowl.

  45. For all of you who are blasting TC and ODB
You wish you had them on your team

The Panthers are a flash in the pan and all you Panthers fans will be back to NASCAR in a few weeks

Norman is dirty and now that the NFL knows it he will not be able to get away with his punk stuff any more

  46. How is it that Odell went from being a game-changing wonder to the next Great Satan?I love all the hyperventilating; now people talk about him like he’s a mass murderer.

Oh yeah, because fat beer-drinking couch ninjas who watch football as a profession appoint themselves the moral judges of society. Reporters who follow the team report that Odell is well liked by the team, one of the hardest workers, and a student of the game who watches endless hours of tape.

He is young and probably still a bit immature – he needs to work on that. He gets into a fight between the lines with another player on the field (who himself has a history of fighting his own QB and other players) and got punished for it. Whoopee. That makes him, well, like almost every other player in the league.

Odell committed a league offense, got punished, and life moves on. I for one look forward to seeing him continue playing like a freak for years to come.

  47. Something seemed extremely WRONG with Beckham, as in out of his freakin’ mind! I don’t care what kind of mind games someone plays on you, you can’t launch yourself at their head. Your coach cannot then defend you and say they both deserve “equal punishment”. I usually like Coughlan, but Come on, man! Did Beckham get drug tested immediately after that game? That would have been interesting!

  48. you are a major at fault party too TOM! To say you didn’t see them fighting and getting penalized is being OLD, DUMB and BLIND! Which we can all clearly see that you are all 3 of those you old GOON!

    This really isn’t very complicated.

  53. @bigblue431

I agree BB431 but Odell showed weakness Sunday it will be exploited in the future. He admitted to someone getting into his head was a weakness sometime back. If he can’t block that stuff out he’s done for.

I have him in a keeper league lol, I need him to do good.

  54. A lot of worse stuff was done and said in the NFL 40 and 50 years ago than what goes on today. OBJ gets upset because he is called out for being gay? HA! Players used to routinely take an opponents knees out. The NFL has cleaned up the antics and bad behavior if a little gay bashing is the worst they have got. Guys today are too soft.

  55. 20 year Panthers fan here, both were antagonizing each other but come on…watch all the replays. One was outrageous and egregious with his actions and was suspended and the other was wrong in a lot of his actions and was fined significantly. This silly “the bat made me do it” or “he called me names” defense is ridiculous and should be treated as such. Beckham had 2 penalties for 17 yards. Norman had 1 for 14. The rest were offsetting.

  58. Giants fan here and apologies for Coughlin’s behavior during and after the game. He’s old guys. He should have retired 5 years ago. The truth is that most coaches in the NFL not in Pittsburgh, Seattle, Buffalo, of Dallas would have benched Beckham until he got control of himself.
I don’t blame Norman for any of this. My fellow Giants fans if Beckham were on the Panthers team and Norman was our shut down corner we would be proud of him. Norman didn’t throw Beckham to the ground to start this. Beckham tried to flop knowing the official was right there and became furious from that point on.
Here’s hoping the young man grows up but with enablers like Coughlin I’m not holding my breath.

  59. I’m a Giants fan and Tom is clueless. Both were at fault for playing dirty during plays. One is at fault for being malicious after a play.

  60. Everybodys been trashing Odell. It comes down to a couple reason. One, he’s the biggest star in the game so he’s a targe. Two, fans of every team not named the Giants are very jealous that he is not on their team. Luckily, us big blue fans will get to watch him dominate for the next decade. Nobody will remember punk Josh Norman in half that time.

  61. Take some blame for not having a spine to punish Beckham and/or being totally clueless, Tom.

Always funny when leaders (coaches, politicians, CEOs) who would go ballistic if you suggested they didn’t know everything going on in their organizations immediately resort to the old “I had no idea what was going on” defense.

  62. Eli Manning,as the supposed offensive leader of this team, should have pulled Beckham aside and told him to knock it off, regardless of what Norman was saying or doing. He was hurting the team with the penalties and now has hurt it even more by missing a key game. I think that most coaches or players on other teams would have put a stop to Beckham’s behavior before it reached the meltdown point. That’s on every single member of the Giant’s team for not reeling him in. If they don’t make the playoffs, they have no one to blame but themselves.

  63. I’m a Giants fan and Tom is clueless. Both were at fault for playing dirty during plays. One is at fault for being malicious after a play.
    —————————————-
Isn’t that what Tom said – both were at fault but all the attention is on one player. He’s not clueless at all, he’s sticking up for his player who, while wrong, is not the only one at fault.

Both acted maliciously, Odell took it too far and that’s why he got the bigger punishment. Norman is no Boy Scout.

I think you need to watch the game too. Norman took a swing or shoved Odell in the head on that play trying to stop Vereen, which is what set Odell off.

It’s not right what Odell did, but Normal shouldn’t be surprised either.

  66. Yes, Beckham deserves to be suspended. His hit on norman is indefensible.

But the Panthers had a motive from the start. First off, Practice squad players aren’t allowed to travel with the team.

So why is a PS player walking on the field with a bat pointing at Beckham and actually getting into it with him while the Giants are stretching. Norman probably put him up to it. That’s bush league.

2nd, why haven’t the refs been suspended? If it’s true that they were told before the game to look out for Norman and Beckham, they have no excuse for not throwing flags early.

  67. ======================================
Beckham should’ve had 3 td’s (Manning short armed one down the middle) instead he cost the Giants a chance of knocking off 13-0 Carolina and possibly a playoff spot but everyone keep defending his actions while the Giants watch the playoffs from home. I’d be pissed if I was a Giants fan.

    -Panthers fan

No, Giants hung 35 points on the Panthers. Giants will be watching playoffs from home because of awful defense that ranks last in the league. Focus for the off season.

  68. If Beckham played for the Patriots,Belichick probably would have cut him on Monday morning, regardless of his skill set. Coughlin should have yanked him. He was so focused on Josh Norman that he forgot about his routes and winning the game, which they needed badly.

He is the only one that took a 10 yard running start to spear a man in the side of his hear, other guy didn’t do that
    Come on !
    ———————————

Agreed, that’s why he got suspended. My point is simply that Norman is not innocent, hence his fines too. My issue is that media is only focusing on Odell. Norman is a trash-talking ahole. I mean, the guy fought his own QB for goodness sakes! There is no scenario where I see Odell going after Eli.

Really, how? By having 17 yards of net penalties and scoring a TD?

It was Odell who let the Panthers score 38 points, or was that the Giants lack of defense?

    Oh…give…me…a…break.

  72. I do agree with Coughlin on one thing: Odell Beckham is not the only one who did wrong. Norman dealt out his fair share of cheap shots too, just not a helmet-to-helmet.

  73. So we have Josh Norman as Tonya Harding and Odell Beckham as Nancy Kerrigan? I guess that makes the practice squad guy Jeff Gillooly.

  74. “keep pounding”….on the other team’s best player after the whistle until he gets fed up and earholes one of us to protect himself. Now I get the lame “keep pounding” reference.

    —————————

    Now THAT is funny

  76. Couglin is correct that Odell isn’t the only one at fault. Coughlin himself should be suspended for allowing him to continue to play reckless like that.

That was no different than Sean Payton’s staff putting a bounty on players. The coach kept sending his player out there to play like trying to hurt a guy and possibly end his career with the helmet to head shot. It doesn’t matter if the player was motivated by a bounty or just just his own childishness. It was allowed to continue on the coach’s clock so he should be held accountable as well

  77. Tom – it doesn’t matter if he was provoked. He took the bait. Players provoke each other all the time. Heck, people do it to other people all the time. It doesn’t matter.

Do you remember what happened to Ray Rice? His fiancee provoked him, didn’t she? I believe she spit at him and hit him. He had choices to make then and took the wrong one.

Exactly what his #1 receiver Terry Glenn said when he sat him for a Super Bowl. Any other questions?

  79. This is ridiculous.. Coughlin probably believes Hardy’s gf is at fault for getting beat up she did run her mouth.. Fact is all NFL players talk, insult, try to get others off their game.. Fact is Odell needed to be removed from the game.. Doesn’t matter what is said a player that responds by head hunting, and punching isn’t mature enough to play in this league.. This is why the Giants are out of control.. Coach making excuses for unacceptable behavior on the field- he’s gotta go.. He’s more worried about saving his job than making the right long term decision to help his young player.

  80. Really, Tom Coughlin. Fighting for your job now instead of what is right. Norman did nothing as extreme as helmet to helmet or a punch. Penalties are fair and Beckham and you should be professionals and accept them

  81. justintuckrule says:

He shouldn’t be suspended for self-preservation. That shot to Norman came as a result of 2 years worth of cheap shots. Can only walk back to the huddle so many times before you end up on IR yourself.

    #freebeckham

Guess the hand’s on the other foot now eh Kramer?

No fun being on the defensive is it? Especially when it’s been seen by all on TV as opposed to things that might have happened but there’s no evidence according to Nash.

  82. Coughlin is 100% correct, it’s not just OBJ.
    Its also on Tom Coughlin.

Any decent head coach that is watching the game would pull a player that’s acting up and letting his emotions harm the team.
Belichick pulled Aqib Talib when he got mad at Steve Smith Sr.
Couglin should have benched OBJ for several plays in the 1st or 2nd quarter.

It’s over dude. Let it go. No amount of revisionist history is going to make people forget what they actually saw happen on the field.

  84. I’ve never seen a WR pull this kinda thing and get defended so much. Players trash talk constantly, does that justify ODB acting how he did? You’ve got to be kidding Coughlin, stop enabling him. He’s going to turn into T.O. at this rate.

Or perhaps if the Giants offense had a receiver that played football instead of Call of Duty they may have been on the filed longer, kept Newton off the field. That’s how you win games.

  86. Coach Coughlin needs to better control his players. If you know a player is easily excitable, isolate him so the other team can NOT do what Carolina did. That is not excusing what they did, and suspensions seem to be in order for serious pregame issues, but it is obvious to me that you, as head coach in your own stadium, failed to control the environment and allowed your opponent inside the head of your best weapon. Coach Coughlin, perhaps you are naive one who needs to do some soul searching…

  87. I would toss the NYG coaching staff in for culpability on this. When an employee is becoming unhinged on the job, you reassign him or her to a position where they can be more effective… like the other side of the field.

I don’t know where you’ve been, bigblue431,but people who cross Belichick tend to disappear from the team. Ask Jonas Gray, just for an example. One week,he runs for 200+ yards, makes the cover of SI, then shows up late for practice and barely saw the field again before he was cut. Fact. Plenty more guys where that came from.

  89. well its all moot now, suspension overturned.
as suspected, giants get special treatment.

might have know about air pressure 4 games 1st round pick, $1mil fine

seen by millions intentional cheap helmet shot with intent – free bird

now we know the rules. I don’t want to hear a peep from the big blue CHEATERS

  90. The Giant organization is not looking good in this situation. They are coming off as crybabies. This team needs an overhaul. Sorry Tom, time for you to go.

  91. Odell Beckham, 6 violations in one game. And it’s the fault of someone’s else?

Sorry, Coughlin. That was a mental meltdown by one of your players and Coughlin was afraid to take Beckham out of the game.

You created this mess, Coughlin. Don’t point a finger that anyone else, because 4 more fingers will be pointing back at you.

  92. I used to think losing to the Giants in the Super Bowls was okay because I held the Giants in a fairly high regard but after the way the curtain got pulled back on the way Coughlin really handle things makes me almost sick to my stomach. Here’s to hoping those guys somehow sneak in the playoffs so the Pats can slaughter their as in the SB.

  93. so lets review,

we can see now that it was clearly a sting against NE. If NE had balls that were out of spec that should have ben a fine and done. it could have been appealed and denied. unlikely it goes to court for an appropriate fine. end of story.

we can also now see that the integrity canard is as hypocritical as it gets.

with all we know about concussions, the helmet shot was a no brainer 1 game.

we saw a league spend $5mil to show us how big their junk was over something that at best was a small fine.

we saw how far they would go to roach one player who they believe may have had an accomplice and how quickly they exonerate the helmet shot.

  94. Who cares if he was provoked? People do that at every level of sports, it’s part of the game.

The people that blame the Panthers are just way off (and I’m not a Panthers fan). This is common place. Guys jaw back and forth every game, every play, before and after the game. It was called gamesmanship until the PC crowd slithered their way into sports

In now way is that an excuse to spend the entire game out of control. I will agree that it shouldn’t of went as far as it did, but only because Beckham should of been thrown out of the game in the first series when he threw a punch. The rulebook specifically states that throwing a punch is an immediate ejection. He threw at least 3 (Coleman on the first series, Finnegan, and Norman) before the ridiculous cheap shot.

If the refs weren’t scared to throw a “star” out of the game when they should have, he’s of been ejected immediately, and this story would not exist. So the only excuse they can use is “If the refs did their job, they’d of thrown me out after the first time I deserved it instead of letting me do it repeatedly, and in an escalating manner”

When you only excuse is you shouldn’t of been there to do it because you should of already been thrown out. you aren’t in a good spot

  95. Jaws is walking back the story that the suspension is overturned. Sounds like a trial baloon by the NFL that didn’t fly.

Regardless, we again see that there are different standards in place for NY players and franchises as opposed to the their rivals. When the NFL headquarters are a local call, you can get special treatment.

  96. OBJ missed his opportunity to show maturity. If he just accepted the suspension, and apologized everyone would just move on. But fighting the suspension combined with the coach saying it wasn’t all OBJs fault.. Well that tells you all you need to know.. Time for big changes in Big Blue.. Look the team isn’t going to the playoffs .. I’d have a ton of respect for coach if he supported the suspension and benched OBJ for the final game.. Big blue missed the chance to make this lesson burn in for next season..!

  97. What’s not fair coach, is that none of your staff or other players got ahold of this young man and calmed him down.
Apparently he is on a team that doesn’t give a flip about him.

  98. @bradygirl12:

There is NO WAY Belichick would cut a player like Beckham. No you just sound ridiculous.

    @justintuckrule:

Take off your Blue shaded sunglasses; there is NO defense for Baby-Beckhams actions.
Now teams know he’s a baby and can’t handle big mean words from the big mean nasty competition. He’s got a lot of growing up to do

I can’t wait for the Skins to knock the New York Injury Fakers out of the playoffs Sat nite.
    Deplorable, cheating organization.

  99. Coughlin needs to shut up. He is a disgrace for not having the guts to pull Beckham out of that game.
He has been a very good coach and he will probably get into the Hall Of Fame, but after this incident, he lost a lot of his credibility.
Yeah, the other guy was wrong, too. But Beckham went nuts and kept being nuts. It was an absolute disgrace and he completely ignored trying to play for his team and was only concerned about doing dirty stuff to the Panthers.
I don’t know if or what the Panthers said to Beckham before the game, but what it was or wasn’t — it worked. They got into his head and showed him to be a complete moron.
Every team he plays now will be looking to do that to him. and until he gets the message that what he did was nuts, it’ll work.

  100. was so focused on Josh Norman that he forgot about his routes and winning the game, which they needed badly.
    ———————————
so he drops a sure touchdown on the first play (or so) of the game, then catches multiple passes in the second half and scores one to tie it at the end, but he forgot his routes?

  101. This incident is a microcosm of society in general. ODB is a star. Norman, is good, but he’s not certified yet.

If Norman was Deion, and ODB was Rison, where would the sides lay in that case? Everybody loves to hate on the guy who is more popular. And it’s stupid.

  102. I see old “tuckrule” is begging and praying for the Eagles to beat Washington this week. Don’t believe that is going to happen good buddy. So sorry that your NY Football Giants can’t get it done on their own. Accept the fact that you are NOT going to the playoffs, will be getting a new head coach and will start the long rebuilding process. At least the Jets look pretty solid this year.

  103. Too bad Beckham’s suspension won’t be against the Eagles, but by the time that game comes around it probably won’t matter anymore. Eagles are toast. They will get blown out by Washington (clearly the better team). And I say that as an Eagles fan. Chip Kelly really screwed things up.

  104. Beckham just showed what a spoiled diva he really is. He also gave every other team in the League the blueprint of how to get under his skin!

Gonna be rough for him from now on!!!!!
